Spirulina has gained this nickname for a few important reasons. These reasons include being fast and easy to grow as well as having high amounts of essential nutrients for the body. These nutrients are key to making this an amazing herb for the entire body. So, we will use this blog to explore some of the uses and benefits of Spirulina as well as share with you how to use Spirulina Powder in your own natural herbal cosmetics.

How to Use Spirulina Powder: Growing ConditionsHow to Use Spirulina Powder: Growing Conditions

Spirulina can be found growing in the lakes and ponds of Africa, Central America and South America. This algae prefers these warm lakes and their alkaline water conditions, around a pH range of 8-11. So, you won’t ever find Spirulina growing sea water. Also, it needs to have an abundance of sunlight and mineral rich water. Both the sun light and minerals are used by Spirulina as food sources. Then, the algae uses these to create all the beneficial properties that make it so loved. Further, Spirulina is able to grow in conditions that many other algae can not. In fact, some dessert populations of Spirulina can survive if their pond evaporates, as they can remain dormant on rocks until the water returns.

Also, you can recreate some of the conditions that Spirulina needs to thrive so you can grow some at home! If you wanted to grow this algae on your own, you just need a few supplies. It is said to be about the same level of maintenance as caring for fish. So, you will need a fish tank, sunlight, a few mineral salts for food, and some simple equipment. If you would like to know some specifics on growing this super food, then take a look at a great resource we found at the end of this blog. They go over the basics of growing this algae at home and have even more information for anyone that runs into problems.

These nutrients include high levels of protein, various vitamins, and many essential minerals.

However, this super food is actually only a rediscovered gem and not some new health discovery. In fact, Spirulina is a crop that was farmed by some ancient civilizations, but it had gotten lost somewhere in history. There is historical evidence that Aztecs were using Spirulina as a major food source in the 16th century. It is thought to have been harvested in Lake Texcoco and made into cakes, as a Spanish conquistador named Hernan Cortez had observed the native people harvesting and consuming it. He even tried some of the algae and noted that it had the “flavor of cheese”. Although this practice had disappeared from culture for a time, we are rediscovering its properties and finding new uses. Since this crop is nutritious and easy to cultivate, organizations like the United Nations promote its production in developing countries to help alleviate world hunger.
