Ingredients Spotlight: SLSA

Before getting into the recipe, we wanted to give you some more information about some of the ingredients that we are going to be working with. The first one that we will be talking about is Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, which can be abbreviated as SLSA. This is a new product that we recently brought to Natures Garden Wholesale Supplies. It is a surfactant that can be used as an alternative to other surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Cocoyl Isentionate (SCI). These Sangria Scoopable Bubble Bars are one of the three different recipes we created to showcase this new product. When compared to other surfactants like these, SLSA provides a lot more of foaming and lathering qualities to different types of bath and body products. It is most commonly added to recipes like bubble bars, bath bombs, bubble baths, and also body and facial washes. Since it derives from coconut oil and palm oil, SLSA is very cleansing and moisturizing for the skin. We are excited for you all to try this new ingredient out in your upcoming recipes!

We will be sharing all three of the recipes that we made using SLSA for, all in separate blogs. The other ones are a sangria body scrub, pink sangria soap, and sangria bath bombs. We hope that you will enjoy working with this new surfactant as much as we did.

Ingredients Spotlight: Jojoba OilIngredients Spotlight: Jojoba Oil

The next ingredient that we want to tell you about is Jojoba oil. It is used in countless types of recipes, including cold process soap, lip balm, lip stick, emulsified scrubs, and bath bombs. This oil is extremely versatile because of the positive benefits it brings to different body products and cosmetic formulations. Jojoba oil has anti inflammatory and moisturizing properties in it that reduce redness, dry skin, and other sensitive skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea. There are a lot of benefits to using it, it is an easy oil to work with, as well as to create recipes with. In addition to this one, we have used it in an Activated Charcoal Scrub, a Honey Vanilla Lip Balm, and our Sandalwood Bath Bomb. Each of these is cleansing, moisturizing, and will make you and your skin feel nice and rejuvenated!

Lastly, we wanted to talk about the fragrance oil that we are incorporating and highlighting in today’s recipe. We call this Sangria Punch, which is actually one of the many Natures Garden original fragrance oils. Sangria punch fragrance oil is a complex scent, starting with very fruity top notes that to us, truly resemble a homemade sangria. There are hints of apple, lemon, lime, orange and grape. Following that are the scents of blackberries and pomegranate, which really compliment one another. These fruity notes sit on a base of sugar. We think that this fragrance definitely captures the smell of real sangria and makes for a great scent to add to girly bath product recipes. We have used this fragrance oil in four products that we have made using. Once again, the other craft recipes we created are the Pink Sangria Soap Recipe, Sangria Bath Bombs Recipe, and the Sparkling Sangria Body Scrub Recipe.

Before we get started, it is important to clean and sanitize your work area and all of your packaging materials. It is suggested that you wear gloves, an apron, gloves, a face mask, and a hair net while preparing this recipe.

Mixing the Dry IngredientsMixing the Dry Ingredients

For the first part of this recipe, we will be preparing the dry portion of our ingredients. You will want to get out a regular mixing bowl that is only used for soap making, candle making, etc. Then, you can take out your scale and weigh out the 205 grams of Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate we will need. Add it to your mixing bowl. Next, we will measure out and add to the same bowl 230 grams of Baking Soda, 112 grams of Cream of Tartar, and 36 grams of Corn Starch. The powders from these can really kick up in the air, so make sure that you are wearing a mask. Mix each of these ingredients together until the dry mixture is smooth. We find it easier to break up all of the clumps in the mixture when we use our hands instead of using a spoon or a spatula.

Next, take out a second mixing bowl. Get the scale out once again and weigh out all of the liquid ingredients for this recipe. First, weigh out 100 grams of the vegetable glycerin. Then, measure out and add to the same bowl 12 grams of jojoba oil, 5 grams of vitamin E oil, and 7 grams of the Sangria Punch Fragrance Oil. Blend them all together seamlessly. The vegetable glycerin, jojoba oil, and vitamin E oil all provide benefits for the skin, which make them perfect for this and other bubble bar recipes. Vegetable glycerin gives you moisturized and resilient skin, and jojoba oil and vitamin E oil will reduce skin irritation, moisturize, as well as minimize the appearance of scars and wrinkles.

Then, pour your wet ingredients into the mixing bowl that contains the dry ingredients. Our next step is to create the fun pink color for these sangria bubble bars. You are going to add three drops of the tomato red FUN Soap Colorant. This small amount will give you the light pink color that we are looking for and which you can see in the recipe picture. Add more of the colorant if you prefer a more deeper pink shade or red shade for your bubble scoops. Using your hands, mix all of the ingredients together. Once mixed thoroughly, it will morph into the consistency of dough.

Once your wet and dry ingredients have been mixed together to form the dough. We used our hands to squeeze the dough and form it into a big ball. Keep on repeating the process of squeezing and rolling until you are sure the pink color is visible everywhere and there are no uncolored white parts left. Doing this will make the next step easier, when we pack the dough and create the actual bubble bar scoops.

Now, we get to do the fun part of the recipe! Make sure to have your flexible silicone mat ready for this step. The dough should already be in your mixing bowl. Using your hands, start by pressing down and packing the bubble bar dough tightly in the mixing bowl. This is going to make it easier when using the ice cream scoop. Now that the dough is ready to be scooped, use your stainless steel ice cream scoop to form the bubble bars. As you scoop, place each of them on your flexible silicone mat. This is the easiest place for them to have the time they need to set up without getting in the way of other projects.

To finish off the bubble bar scoops, take out the diamond dust mica pigment. Sprinkle it all over your bubble bars to decorate them a little bit. We love working both with the 24K gold mica pigment and the diamond dust mica pigment because when a little glitter is added, projects come to life! Finally, set the silicone mat aside on a countertop to allow your sangria sparkle bubble bars to set up. If completely undisturbed, they should harden enough and be fully set up after 24-48 hours.

Once they have finished setting up, your sangria scoopable bubble bars are ready to add to the bath! When you are ready to use them, simply run a couple of the scoops under the bath water. They will start bubbling and fizzing right away, which will give you a wonderful bubble bath. Galaxy Bubble Bar Recipe Prepare You Work Area

Prior to starting it is important to be prepared. You will really want to make sure your work space is clean and sanitized before you begin creating your bubble bars. We also recommend wearing an apron, your safety gloves, a face mask, and a hair net while preparing this recipe. Having a clean and sanitized work space will assure to keep your Galaxy bubble bars nice and clean. In addition, get out any ingredients or equipment that you will be using and place them in your work area. Having everything you need at an arm’s reach will help the process go more quickly and smoothly.

First, you are going to weigh out your dry ingredients. In total, you will have four dry ingredients you will be weighing out. You can use measuring cups but we recommend using a scale that will allow you to weigh in grams. In a mixing bowl, you will want to add 460 grams of baking soda, 410 grams of sodium cocoyl isethionate, 72 grams of corn starch, and 224 grams of cream of tartar. Next, you want to mix together all the ingredients. This can be done with a mixing spoon, but we always find it easier to use our hands. Also, use your hands to break up any clumps you may find throughout the powder mixture. Clumps will not be your friend during this process.

If you have never used sodium cocoyl isethionate or SCI for short, you should definitely give it a try! Sodium cocoyl isethionate will leave your skin feeling super soft. Also, sodium cocoyl isethionate is great for sensitive skin. We highly recommend giving sodium cocoyl isethionate a try. It is a wonderful SLS alternative that truly is amazing!

Next, you are going to be preparing your wet ingredients. For this step, you will have a total of three wet ingredients. So, get your bowl of dry ingredients and tare the weight on the scale. Alternatively, you could weigh these ingredients in a separate bowl before adding it to the dry ingredients. This could be helpful for those worried about pouring too much, as it could alter your recipe. So, in a large mixing bowl, blend 200 grams of your vegetable glycerin, 24 grams of the safflower oil, and 14 grams of Natures Garden’s Grape Happy Camper Fragrance Oil.  Once again, while you can use the volume measurements above, we highly recommend using weighted measurements.  By weighing your ingredients in grams, you will get a more accurate measurement and an overall better outcome.

Now, add your wet ingredients to the mixing bowl containing the dry powdered ingredients. Once again, go ahead and use your hands to mix the ingredients. Also, make sure you get all the clumps out. Keep mixing the wet and dry ingredients until you get a dough like consistency. You want to make sure your dough is not too crumbly. If it becomes crumbly, you can add a little bit more vegetable glycerin. However, you want to be very careful when adding the vegetable glycerin. If you end up adding too much vegetable glycerin, your dough will become too wet and the recipe may not dry properly. Make sure you are super careful when measuring and mixing your dry and wet ingredients.

Next, we are going to separate the bubble bar dough you just made into three bowls. So, you will need three of your mixing bowls. In a later step, we will be adding a different colorant to each bowl. Although for now, you just need to make sure while separating the dough into three bowls, the are equally divided to include 1/3 in each bowl. They don’t have to be exactly even, just a rough 1/3 in each bowl will work. However don’t let your big mixing bowl go too far, you’ll need it again in a later step. Now for the fun part! Start getting excited!

Next, we will be adding color. In each of the three bowls, you will be adding one of Natures Garden’s three FUN Soap Colorants. In the first bowl, add five grams of neon blue FUN Soap Colorant. Then, use your hands to mix the blue colorant into the bubble bar dough. Now, with clean gloves, add five grams of Natures Garden’s ultramarine violet FUN Soap Colorant to the second bowl. Lastly, in your third bowl, add five grams of the neon pink soap colorant.  While wearing clean gloves, mix the colorants into the final bowl of dough. Once you have mixed each portion of dough, roll them into a ball and place each one back in their bowl. Remember you may need to change gloves for each color. This will prevent the colors from mixing with each other prematurely.

Now, you will need the large bowl you were using earlier in the recipe. Go ahead and place your pink bubble bar dough, blue dough, and purple dough ball in your large bowl. Place them next to each other in the bowl but not directly on top of each other. Then, press down on the dough balls to flatten each color dough ball completely. You can overlap slightly as you press on each ball. The goal is to fill the bowl completely.  When we begin scooping we will scoop across the bowl to allow us to get a little bit of each color.

Next, scoop the dough using your small stainless steel scooper. While scooping the dough with your stainless steel ice cream scooper, make sure you get a little bit of the pink dough, the blue dough, and the purple dough color in the ice cream scoop. Then, release each scoop onto a piece of parchment paper or on your silicone baking mat. This recipe will make about thirty of the small ice cream scoops.

Now, let’s add some sparkle! We used Natures Garden Diamond Dust Mica Pigment to add some shimmer to the Galaxy bubble bars. This will give your handcrafted bubble bars a silvery white sparkle. While this is totally optional, we thought it was the perfect finishing touch to really give the bubble bars the true Galaxy feel. So, sprinkle your bubble bar scoops with Natures Garden diamond dust mica powder. While making the recipe, we used about two grams of diamond dust pigment. But you can use as much or as little as you would like.

Finally, you will just need to let your bubble bars setup.  I know you want to use them right away, but you will need to be patient. It can take a few days and in some cases as long as a week for them to setup.  While setup will not take as long a typical rolled bubble bar, for us they just took a few days. It all depends on the environment they are setting up in. You will know they are ready when they feel completely dry.  If you try to pick your bubble bars up too soon, they may fall apart in your hands. So, make sure you allow a few days for the bubble bars to completely harden before moving them or packaging them. Your finished product should turn out like the picture shown. Look at how awesome and vibrant the colors turn out! The diamond dust mica powder adds a great look to these bubble bars.

Lastly, I bet you can’t wait to try them! I know I couldn’t! I was so excited to see what they looked like in water, I couldn’t wait to get home and see! So, I crumbled one into a bowl, here is a picture of a finished Galaxy bubble bar in a little water. When using your bubble bars at home, crumble a couple of your hardened scoops under your warm running bath water. Not only will it leave your water a beautiful magenta color, it will provide for a nice and relaxing bubble bath. Before beginning, you are going to want to create a workspace that is safe for both you and your product. Firstly, clean and sanitize any supplies that you will be needing for this recipe. Also, tidy up your workspace to make sure that you have an adequate space to create these bubble bars. Next, make sure that you have all of the necessary safety equipment to complete this recipe. Especially, make sure that you have some gloves and a mask on for this recipe as some of the powders in the recipe tend to float up into the air.

Initially, you will be working on weighing all of the dry ingredients you will be using for this recipe. So, retrieve a medium sized mixing bowl and your measuring devices, you can use your scale or some measuring cups and spoons. Then, weigh out the 272 grams, or 1 cup, of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, 230 grams, or 1 cup, of Sodium Bicarbonate – Baking Soda, 112 grams, or 1/3 cup, of Cream of Tartar, and 36 grams, or 1/3 cup, of Corn Starch into your bowl in the specified amounts.

Then, you will want to mix these ingredients well to fully incorporate all the powders. You can use your hands or a mixing spoon, but we have found that it is easiest to mix with gloved hands. Further, you should pay attention to any clumps existing in this mixture. You should break up any clumps to make the mixture as smooth and evenly mixed as possible. Otherwise, your final product may have pockets of powder that never mix with the necessary ingredients.

Next, you are going to be weighing your wet ingredients. So, retrieve a small mixing bowl and tare its weight from your scale. Now, add the 100 grams, or 1/3 cup, of Vegetable Glycerin, 12 grams, or 1 Tablespoon, of Macadamia Nut Oil, and 7 grams of Blackberry Bling Bling Fragrance Oil to the small bowl in their proper amounts. You will be using this mixture in the following step, so keep the bowl close.

Now, you are going to combine all of your previously weighed ingredients. Grab your bowl of weighed wet ingredients and add it to your bowl of weighed dry ingredients. Mix this well to incorporate everything. Also, you have the option to add a bit more vegetable glycerin to the mixture if it is a bit crumbly. However, you do not want to add too much as this would make the recipe too wet to create a proper bubble bar. So, we’d recommend mixing in no more than a few drops at a time to avoid going over your limit.

Next, you will be adding the FUN Soap Colorant to the mixture you have created thus far. So, take your combined bowl of wet and dry ingredients and add the correct amount of Deep Purple FUN Soap Colorant, which is 7 grams. Mix the color in thoroughly and make sure that there aren’t any pockets of soap colorant left behind after you mix. So, the dough should be an even, pretty shade of purple all the way through the mixture.

Next, you are going to be adding some shimmery mica powder to your purple dough mixture. So before you begin scooping, you are going to weigh out and add 1 gram of the diamond dust mica. So, use your scale to weigh the proper amount in your small bowl that you have used in a previous step. Then, mix the mica ingredient into your purple dough mixture. Also, try to make sure that you mix the dough thoroughly to create an even shimmer in your mixture and continue to break up any clumps that you may see throughout the creating process.

Now, the mixture is ready for you to create the scoops. So, retrieve your small stainless steel scoop to shape your bubble bars. Simply spoon some of your dough mixture into your metal scoop and pack it into the scoop. You can pack it by pressing on the dough while it is inside the scoop. Doing this ensures that your bubble bar will hold its little ice cream scoop form. After, release the dough from the scoop onto your parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Repeat this until all of your dough has been scooped on your parchment paper or silicone baking mat.

Next, you will be completing a few last steps to complete your bubble bars. After you have all your little ice cream scoops on your parchment paper or silicone baking mat, then you are ready to add the finishing touches. Sprinkle about a gram or so of the diamond dust mica onto the scoops to add some extra shimmer to your products. You can add more if you’d like to, it all depends on how much mica dust you’d want to add. Then, you should let the bubble bars sit undisturbed, so they can harden and set up completely. This should take a couple of days, but they need this time to harden.

Finally, your bar bars are ready for you to use! After a few days have passed, your creations will be ready for you to take to the bath.  It is fairly simple to use this product, just crumble it under some warm, running water and there you have it! Since these bubble bars are smaller, you may want to use a couple if you are bringing them to a bubble bath. Make Your Own Bubble Bars Weigh Out Your Dry IngredientsFirst, you will need a deep mixing bowl.  Use your scale to weigh out 205 grams of sodium cocoyl isethionate, 230 grams of sodium bicarbonate which is commonly known as baking soda, 112 grams of cream of tartar, and lastly 36 grams of corn starch.  Then, use your hands, or a mixing spoon to blend the ingredients together.  You also want to make sure you have broken up any clumps you may find in the mixture.

Now, in a separate small bowl, weigh out your dry ingredients.  Use your scale to add 100 grams of vegetable glycerin, 12 grams of sweet almond oil, and 7 grams of Natures Garden’s Mango Sorbet Fragrance Oil.  Mix the ingredients together.

Then, add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients.  Next, mix the ingredients together.  I find it easiest to use your hands to mix them together.  You need to mix the ingredients together until you have a crumbly dough consistency.

Make Your Own Bubble Bars Mix Your ColorantWe will be mixing three colors together to achieve a mango sorbet color.  First, add 6 grams of Nature’s Garden’s yelp yellow FUN Soap Colorant.  Then, add in 1 gram of jailhouse red FUN Soap Colorant.  Lastly, add 3 drops of the yellow oxide FUN Soap Colorant.  Mix them together to create an even color.  Finally, add the colorant to your bubble bar dough.  Again, I find it easiest to also mix the colorant into the dough with your hands.

Once you have all the ingredients mixed, you will leave it in the bowl and scoop right out of the bowl.  You want to push down and pack the dough into the bowl.  This will make it easier to scoop the dough.  As you can see it looks kind of like ice cream.

Now, once you have packed your dough down into your bowl, use your stainless steel ice cream scoop to begin scooping your ice cream bubble bars.  Scoop a bit of the dough into the mini ice cream scoop.  Then, use your hand to once again pack it in tightly.  This will ensure that the bubble bars hold their form when removing them from the scoop.

Finally, make sure your silicone mat or parchment paper is in an area where it will not be disturbed.  Then, press the button to release the scoop over a piece your silicone mat.  Repeat this process until you have used up all of your dough.  This recipe will create about 15 mini ice cream scoop bubble bars.  These ice cream bubble bars will need to setup before you can move them.  Leave them undisturbed for about three days before using them or packaging them.  The drying time can vary.  However, after a couple days you can check them to see if they have setup.

Bubble bars are not only fun to make, but they are fun to use!  Now that you have learned how to make your own bubble bars, it’s time to use them.  Simply take a couple of these scoops and crumble them up under your warm running bath water.  Then, watch the water bubble up!
