Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a commonly used oil in many homemade bath and body products, so read on to find many of the benefits of coconut oil. While many know that this oil was good for you, do you know how coconut oil benefits your bath and body recipes?

Coconut oil has tons of benefits for your skin, hair, and just about everything else! This oil contains properties that are are perfect for moisturizing and caring for your body. It does this with properties such as its three fatty acids, capric acid, lauric acid and caprylic acid, which are wonderful for our bodies. Plus, coconut oil is said to have properties that reduce fungus, bacteria, and inflammation. So, this oil is perfect for effective, clean skin care. This is also why we created this blog to discuss this cosmetic ingredient of choice and there are quite a few. Let’s get right into it!

Benefits of Coconut Oil Difference Between Coconut Oils 76 and Fractionated

Before we go into the benefits to your body and your products, we should explain the difference between the two types of coconut oil that we carry. One main difference between the two is the melting point. Fractionated Coconut Oil is able to stay liquid at lower temperatures than the Coconut Oil 76 can. This happens because Fractionated Coconut Oil only contains the medium-chain triglycerides of coconut oil, which are Lauric and Myristic. However, the Coconut Oil 76 contains the fatty acids Myristic, Palmitic, Stearic, Oleic, Linoleic, and Lauric.

This difference in fatty acids can cause more differences between the two. Fractionated Coconut Oil is white in color, absorbs more quickly and is lighter on the skin. Plus, it mixes better with other oils than coconut oil 76. On the other hand, Coconut Oil 76 is a typically light yellow, sits on the skin a bit longer, and makes for a thicker moisturizer. While both are beneficial, it is a good idea to choose the one that will suit your needs best.

Benefits of Coconut Oil for Your Products

Coconut oil can be added to a variety of different bath and body creations. Not only will it add helpful benefits for your skin, but this oils can provide wonderful qualities for you products, too. So, we are going to share how coconut oil interacts with a few different types of recipes.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Benefits for Soap

One product that will definitely benefit from the addition of coconut oil is cold process soap! During the soap process the lye acts as the chemical emulsifier that bonds fatty acids with water molecules by generating heat. So, the different types of oils will bond with the water and create different types of soap bars. The fatty acids in the oil provide some nice qualities for your soap bar, which you can see on our Soaping Oil Properties page. Each oil is different, but these qualities may include bar hardness, cleansing, bubbly lather, conditioning, and creamy lather. However, coconut oil provides hardness, cleansing, and bubbly lather.  We should mention though, it is possible to use too much oil in soap. We recommend not using any more than 30% in your soaping recipe.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Benefits for Lotion

Further, adding different types of oils to lotion recipes can create different types of products. One amazing benefit of adding coconut oil to lotion is that it is an oil that will sink in fairly quickly. So, you won’t be left with oily skin, which makes this type of lotion more beneficial for those with already over oily skin.

Benefits of Coconut Oil for Your Body

Not only is coconut oil great to add to make bath and body products, but this oil is very beneficial for your body. So, we are going to share some great uses for coconut oil that will be great for your skin, hair, and everything else!

Some of these issues that we have heard can be helped by applying coconut oil are burns, cuts, eczema, rashes, dermatitis, acne, athlete’s foot, and psoriasis. Simply apply coconut oil just as you would apply lotion and let this lovely moisturizer work its natural magic.

While you can apply coconut straight to these areas, there are more fun ways to tackle your issues. You could create a lotion that uses coconut oil along with other beneficial oils to create a product that smells lovely and really helps your skin. You could create a recipe like the Coffee Butter Scrub Recipe or the Blackberry Fizz Emulsified Sugar Scrub Recipe. These both include coconut oil to create a product that is perfect for skin!

Benefits of Coconut Oil Sensitive Skin Can Use It Too

Also, coconut oil is perfect for those that have sensitive skin. This cosmetic oil is strong enough to soothe the most dry of skin, but gentle enough for sensitive skin types. So, this is the most perfect moisturizer! Plus, this means that sensitive baby skin can enjoy these benefits as well. Many have found that coconut oil is perfect for soothing diaper rash. This can be used as nappy rash cream as there are no harsh elements nor are there chemicals, but this product works to aid babies with painful and inflamed rashes.  However, you should always check with your doctor before using coconut oil on your baby.

Furthermore, this oil is perfect for all of your sensitive areas. In fact, we have created a Natural Flavored Lubricant Recipe that has been perfectly formulated to be sensitive and smooth! Also, know that this lubricant is oil based and cannot be used with latex condoms or they may break.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Kill the Bacteria and Fungus on Your Skin

Another great benefit about this moisturizing wonder is that it is has been know to have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties! So, this oil is perfect for cleansing your skin. Also, this cosmetic oil has been said to be great for helping solve skin issues, such as acne or eczema, as it goes after the underlying causes. The oils is able to have these properties because some of the acids that benefit skin will kill certain fungus and bacteria that is common for causing issues for the skin.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Cleansing FacialBenefits of Coconut Oil Cleansing Facial

Also, coconut oil is a perfect way to clean your face! While it may seem weird to use oil as a face cleanser, it is actually an amazing choice for your face. Firstly, know that applying this oil to your face will actually reduce the bad oils that your face produces and collects. The oil is able to interact with other oils, unlike water, and is able to interact with and remove hardened oils that could be trapped in your pores. Additionally, this trick can fool your skin into producing less oil as it will think that it has enough oil already. Plus, the oil is sensitive, moisturizing, antibacterial and anti-fungal. It also just happens to be my personal favorite make-up remover! So, your face will truly appreciate a coconut oil facial.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Natural Oil for Deodorizing

Also, there have been those that have used this oil to deodorize and kill stinky bacteria. Using this cosmetic oil as a natural deodorant is perfectly natural way to eliminate stinking body odor. So, this would be a perfect ingredient choice to add to a natural deodorant recipe that you may be creating.  Try this natural deodorant recipe and let us know what you think.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Home Hair CareBenefits of Coconut Oil Home Hair Care

Further, this oil will work wonders on you hair. Coconut oil is a perfect solution to frizzy, dry hair.  Since this natural moisturizer is very hydrating, it can be used to help hair from the scalp all the way down to your ends. So, this oil is perfect for helping with dandruff. Plus, this oil has been used to fix split ends, create shinier hair, and hold down fly flyaway hairs. If you’re curious as to how this oil does it, then know that it all comes back to those healthy, fatty acids that can nourish every part of the body.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Natural Wrinkle Reduction

Next, you can use coconut oil to reduce wrinkles. This oil is known for its anti aging properties. Since this cosmetic ingredient is so great for our skin, it can’t be hard to imagine that it could help reduce wrinkles. While wrinkles are common to occur as you age, there is a reason for why this happens. The wrinkles that are related to age are caused by two main things. First, the fat cells in your skin begin to shrink and your inner layer of skin starts to get thinner. Second, your skin’s ability to repair itself decreases as you get older. This combination leads to the formation of dreaded wrinkles. This is where coconut oil comes in! This oil is known to replenish these fat cells, which would reduce the visibility of your wrinkles.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Help With Ingrown Hair

Plus, coconut oil can be great for helping with irritated skin and ingrown hairs. Since this oil has shown you can use it to moisturize and reduce inflammation, this is perfect for soothing areas that are often irritated. So, use this oil in areas that are frequently shaved, prone to bumps, often rubbed, or prone to infection. This is done because coconut oil has been seen to reduce these issues by others. This helps because the oil helps to soften skin so hair can easily grow properly through the follicle. This will help to solve the issue of ingrown hairs with an added bonus of killing bacteria that could potentially infect these area and lead to even more issues. So, using coconut oil before and after shaving can really benefit your skin and help avoid all the annoying bumps.

Benefits of Coconut Oil Reducing Stretch MarksBenefits of Coconut Oil Reducing Stretch Marks

Further, coconut oil has been used to reduce the visibility of stretch marks in some people. Since many have found out exactly how wonderful coconut oil is for them still, it is no wonder that this oil has been found to be perfect for stretch mark reduction. Stretch marks occur due to the skin elasticity not being as good as it should be. This elasticity is the skin’s ability to stretch out and relax back. Similarly to wrinkles, this will reduce overtime due to age. Also, this can occur when a change in the skin is sudden, such as having a baby or gaining a lot of weight quickly. Some have found that the skin healing properties of coconut oil are perfect for getting dark marks, discoloration, and redness to fade away. Plus, the oil will hydrate the skin, which can help the skin heal more quickly.

Furthermore, some found that coconut oil can lessen the appearance of dark under eye circles. This theory is believed because coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, many found this oil to have skin lightening properties, too. So, leaving coconut oil under your eye over night could lead to a lessening of circles under your eyes.

For all the crafters out there, do you like to experiment with different flowers, plants, or herbs? Have you ever tried anything with flax seed before? Flax seed is a fantastic ingredient! It is very versatile and can be used in many different industries! Did you know that in the old original tellings of Sleeping Beauty, she actually pricks her finger on a sliver of flax and not on a spindle? Cool right? Flax seed can be used for soaping, bath and body products, skin care and even hair care!

Flax seed is a very beautiful flower, otherwise known as common flax or linseed. It can be either annual or perennial and is part of the Linum genus. In Northern Ireland flax is used as the emblem and in Belarus common flax is the national flower. There are two basic varieties of flax seed, brown or yellow gold. However the flower is a bright pale blue color. In a cave in the country of Georgia, evidence was found that dates flax seed back 30,000 years! Isn’t that awesome? Even in ancient Egypt, there were paintings of flax inside temples and priests only wore linens made with flax because it was considered a symbol of purity. Mummies were even entombed with the flax linens!

This flower can be used for so many different industries. Soaping, skin care, hair care, and bath and body just to name a few. Do you suffer from migraines or horrible headaches? Flax is a main ingredient in eye pillows to help with the pain! We even have an awesome free recipe for Relaxing Eye Pillows here at Nature’s Garden. It is used as a beautiful natural decoration for soaps, and it contains antioxidants that are great for protecting you from heart disease and your skin from skin cancer. Flax seed also helps with many other skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis and rosacea. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids that are great for helping cuts to heal faster and keep your skin smooth and hydrated. For hair care, flax seed helps to prevent hair loss, makes hair easier to manage and provides it with many essential nutrients.

Here at Nature’s Garden we actually offer whole flax seeds and even a flax seed class! Just type “flax seed” into the search bar on our site and it will take you right to a page titled “Search Results for Flax Seed” that offers our class and the seeds. sealing oilSealing Oils for Hair

When your hair is dry, moisturizing will help prevent the hair from having split ends, or becoming brittle and breaking off.  However, sometimes you need more than just moisturizing.  In order to help keep the hair moisturized, you can also seal it.  By sealing your hair, you are essentially trapping the moisturizing agent into each strand of hair.

Sealing oils are light oils.  There are several different sealing oils that you can use on your hair.  After these oils are applied, they do not completely absorb into the hair.  This is because these oils contain molecules that are of a larger size.  So, instead of being absorbed fully by the hair, they coat the hair.  This coating is what allows the moisturizing element to stay put.

Whether you moisturize your hair with a specific water based product, or simply apply the sealing oil (or light hair oil) after your hair is wet from the shower, the sealing oils do their job; prevent evaporation and seal in the moisture.  The perfect solution when there is high humidity outside and you want to block the outside environment from wreaking havoc on your hair.  Or, just a great way to prevent frizzy hair; sealing oils are the answer.  A sealing oil will not only lock the moisture in, but also keep outside elements out, and as an added bonus you will find that your hair style will stay in place for a longer period of time.

Now, when it comes to using these oils to seal in moisture there are a few different routes you can take.  Here are two of them:

One option is if your hair is dry.  Using a spray bottle, mix the oil or oils of your choosing.  Then, to the bottle add some leave in conditioner and water.  Shake vigorously and spritz thoroughly into the hair.

The next option for applying sealing oils would be after your hair is already wet.  To the wet hair, you would add the leave in conditioner. Then using your hands, gently work the sealing oil in.  When going this route, it is important to remember to really focus on the ends of the hair.

Regardless of which way you apply your sealing oil, once it is in you may proceed with styling as normal.  Because these sealing oils do not absorb but rather coat the moisture in, you will find that after your hair is styled, it will have a beautiful shine.  This is especially true if your are styling with a blow dryer.

Sealing Oils
These oils are considered to be very light.  This means that they will not weigh down your hair.  Also, unlike other oils, these oils will not leaving your hair looking greasy either.  Used alone or in combination with one another, these oils will seal the deal when it comes to locking in moisture for your hair.  And, they also contain various other benefits for your hair.

Grape Seed Oil–  An effective oil in preventing moisture loss, grape seed oil has a high amount of linoleic acid.  This acid is a type of omega-6 fatty acid.  A light oil that does not leave hair looking or feeling greasy, grape seed oil also contains important nutrients, nourishing and promoting healthy hair.  In fact some of the key benefits for the use of this oil include: moisturizing hair, strengthening hair, combating dandruff, and encourage hair growth.   Besides the linoleic acid, grape seed oil also contains antioxidants like the nourishing Vitamin E, proteins, and minerals.

Jojoba Oil–  Jojoba oil has always been known as a wonderful ingredient to include in any body care product.  But, this sealing oil is extremely special in that it is the one that most closely resembles our hairs natural oil, aka sebum.  Having 98% monounsaturated fats, jojoba oil strengthen the hair strands while it hydrates, and can even help repair damage.  This creates hair that is shiny, soft, and full of body.  Being rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, and especially Vitamin E, jojoba oil not only nurtures it also nourishes. And, because jojoba oil is so similar to sebum, this sealing oil not only keeps the hair moisturized, but it can incredibly enhance the overall healthiness of your hair.

Sweet Almond Oil–  This sealing oil is great because it does not only nourish but also smooths the hair. Containing tons of vital nutrients to allow your hair to not only be healthy but also grow thick, long, and strong, Sweet Almond Oil has both polyunsaturated and mono fatty acids.  Besides the nutrients, sweet almond oil also has vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, D, and high amounts of E.  Vitamin E is beneficial for its conditioning aspects for hair.  It is also believed that when massaged into the scalp on a regular basis, sweet almond oil will also help to reduce and control hair loss.

Sunflower Oil– The second most popular oil for hair care products, sunflower oil is plentiful and rich gamma linolenic acid (omega-6).  But, it also includes oleic and palmitic acids, lecithin, and tocopherols.  This sealing oil is also considered an emollient meaning it has lubricating elements which prevent water loss.  A very nourishing oil for hair, sunflower oil contains vitamin A, B1, B5, B6, C, D, and E.  A versatile oil with many benefits, using sunflower oil in your hair will help make your hair more manageable, control frizz, and hydrate.

These oils are all great candidates to having a healthy, full bodied head of hair with lustrous sheen and elasticity.  And let’s not forget about all of the nourishing and repairing aspects these oils also provide.  All in all, pampering your hair by showing it a little TLC with these oils will make for one happy head of hair.

Hair Care

hair careHair Care

Sometimes we put our hair through the ringer.  Whether it is daily blow drying, curling, scrunching, or straightening, the sacrifice for beauty is understandable.  Our hair however, pays the price.

Just like our skin, hair too must also be shown some love and pampering.  One of the best ways to nourish your hair is to use conditioning oils that promote healthiness.  This can easily be done by making your own hair care products.  In fact, one of the most appealing aspects to creating your own products is the control you have.  Not only are you able to select how your hair care product is going to smell, but you can also select which ingredients you would like to include.  Hand selecting the various components of your recipe allows you to cater your hair care products to the exact specifics that you are looking for.

Just like the varying categories of skin types, there are also different hair types as well.  There really is quite a variety of hair types including: normal, curly, wavy, straight, oily, dry, and even hair that is prone to frizz.  But, regardless of which hair type you are creating a product for, it is also important to mention that many of these oils will also have tons of nourishing factors to them too.

Natures Garden does have some homemade hair care product recipes available on their website.  These recipes would include several hair conditioner recipes, a cold process shampoo bar, as well as a few hair gel recipes too.  If you are interested in viewing any of these recipes, please click on this link.

Currently, the creative team at Natures Garden is researching various natural hair care ingredients.  This information will be presented through the extension of the recipes for the Hair care section, as well as the classes section of the website.  There are still many avenues of hair care products that are still left to be explored.  However, in the mean time; if you are interested in making your own hair care product recipes, this blog post will review some of the best hair care ingredients for conditioning your hair.

The oils listed below should be used at least 2 hours before shampooing.  If you are applying the oils straight, it must be worked into dry hair and allowed to set.  When you are ready to shampoo your hair, make sure all of the oil is completely washed out.  Because these oils are considered to be heavy, if not effectively removed, your hair may appear greasy when dry.

Oils that are high in fats:
Including oils that are high in fats in your recipe will be very nourishing for your hair.  For obvious reasons, you will want to select an oil that also absorbs easily into your hair.  These quickly absorbing, high in fat oils even nourish your hair strands from the inside out adding both moisture and strength to each one.

Some great examples of high fat oils to include in your homemade hair care items would be:
Argan Oil-This quickly absorbing oil naturally hydrates your hair.  Rich in antioxidants, this oil is also a natural source of vitamin e, making it a great addition for treating dry or damaged hair.  And, when dealing with those dreaded split ends, argan oil is ready to battle.  It contains a plentiful amount of Omega 3 (rich in 9 fatty acids) assisting in the mending of split ends in your hair.

Avocado Oil–  Containing an extremely high amount of monounsaturated fatty acids, avocado oil has the ability to permeate the strands of your hair, providing additional moisture.  It’s high content in vitamins A, D, & E help to keep your hair both healthy and shiny.  As a detangling element, the addition of this oil in your hair care products creates a remarkable glide without a greasy look or feel.

Castor Oil–  Besides being packed full of vital nutrients for your hair including vitamin E, minerals, and proteins; castor oil also includes both antibacterial and antifungal properties.  Sincecastor oil is a humectant, it attracts moisture to your hair; leaving the hair moisturized with the added bonus of a rich, darker hair color.  But, not only does this oil rejuvenate the hair; it can also help to stimulate growth.   Containing Ricinoleic acid which encourages circulation to the scalp, and omega-6 fatty acids which promote the growth of healthy hair, using castor oil in your hair care products will allow your hair to be gorgeous and healthy.

Coconut Oil 76–  This all around wonderful oil is awesome for maintaining a healthy head of hair.  However, if you are seeking to repair hair stands that have been heat damaged, or you notice your hair is dry, coconut oil 76 can help you out too.  Since the molecular structure of this particular oil allows for ideal penetration in each strand, what results after shampooing is a head of hair that is super soft, full bodied, and unbelievably manageable.  Containing lauric acid, capric acid, and vitamin e; coconut oil 76 revamps your hair and prevents future damage.  As an added bonus, using coconut oil 76 will also halt tangles.

Like mentioned earlier, using any one of these oils or a combination of them will repair, revive, and maintain a healthy head of hair.  In a future blog post, we will be discussing light oils for hair care products and their beneficial elements.
