Diamond Clear Melt and Pour SoapDiamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap

The first step in this recipe is to prepare the red soap portion. We will need to weigh out the 456 grams of the Natures Garden Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap. This soap base of ours is made up of 99.5% glycerin and pure deodorized, double distilled, coconut oil. These ingredients give excellent qualities to this soap. Glycerin helps the skin to retain moisture that is naturally made, soap that contains glycerin in it is gentler on the skin than other types of soap are, and it is great for more dry and sensitive skin.

Coconut oil contains many healthy saturated fats, it is a natural anti-fungal product, and it is also naturally anti-bacterial. Another great property of coconut oil is that it is highly moisturizing, which makes it a popular ingredient in soap and lip balm. Natures Garden also sells Coconut Oil 76 along with Fractionated Coconut Oil, both of which are used in several of our other homemade recipes. Also, if you really enjoy the scent of coconut, you might want to check out the coconut-related fragrance oils that we carry. Some of these are Coconut Cream Pie, Creamy Coconut, and Natures Garden Coconut Vanilla Type

Melting the Soap Base and Adding the Fragrance OIlMelting the Soap Base and Adding the Fragrance Oil

Now that we have discussed some of the properties of this soap base, we can begin melting it to make our soap. Melt the 456 grams that we measured out. You can melt the soap in either a microwave or using a double boiler. After the soap has completely melted, the next ingredient we are going to be using is the Holiday Pomegranate Fragrance Oil. Weigh out 23 grams of it and add that to the melted Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap.

holiday pomegrante fragrance oilThis Holiday Pomegranate Fragrance Oil has definitely been a popular scent in the products and crafts that we have been creating for this holiday season. The other recipes that we have used it in so far are the Holiday Pomegranate Candle, Holiday Air Freshener, and the Holiday Pomegranate Cold Process Soap. As with many others, this fragrance oil is versatile to use in many types of products. We have been using it so much because it smells so delicious! It contains an arrangement of pomegranate, dewberries, blackberries, sparkling citrus, sheer musk, iris, jasmine, red cassis, and finally, sandalwood. It brings together all of these elements in a way that makes it a great ingredient to add to Christmas products!

Making the Red Portion of the SoapMaking the Red Portion of the Soap

Stir the melted soap and Holiday Pomegranate fragrance oil mixture together to incorporate them before moving on. Next, add 35 drops of the tomato red FUN soap colorant. Additionally, use a toothpick to add just a tiny amount of the black oxide FUN soap colorant. Fully stir it together until it is completely red, without any streaks of white.

Allowing the Soap to Set UpAllowing the Soap to Set Up

Next, we are going to pour the red soap onto one of the two pans. In order to release any air bubbles, spray the red soap with rubbing alcohol. When it has had approximately twenty minutes to set up, you can then remove it from the pan. However, the time that it takes for the soap to set up may vary, depending on different conditions. If the temperature of the room that you are working in is too hot or too cold, set up time could be affected. Another factor that may affect set up time is the temperature at which you poured it. When you are removing it from the pan, it should still be warm to the touch at that point.

Creating the Red Strips For Your SoapCreating the Red Strips For Your Soap

For the next step, we are going to place the red soap onto a cutting board. Place it in front of you horizontally. Then, using a knife that you have, begin slicing the soap into vertical strips. Cut them so that they are all about ¼ inch wide. Use and cut the entire portion of the red that you have made, since we are going to have some of them left over. Set them to the side for now and we will come back to them in a later step.

Preparing the Green Portion of the SoapPreparing the Green Portion of the Soap

Grab your second pan for this next step. It is time for us to prepare the green portion of this holiday ribbon melt and pour soap! Once again, you will need to weigh out 456 grams of the Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap. Then, in exactly the same way as before, melt it down. Once the soap has completely melted, we are going to repeat another step from earlier. Measure out and add 23 grams of the Holiday Pomegranate Fragrance Oil. You can stir it together to incorporate it before adding the colorants. Then, add 20 drops of the neon green FUN soap color along with 3 drops of the Kelly Green FUN soap colorant. Once again, we used a toothpick to add just a small amount of the black oxide FUN soap colorant to the bowl. Stir all of the ingredients together so that they are fully combined.

Setting Up the Green SoapSetting Up the Green Soap

Next, pour the green soap onto one of your pans. Spray with rubbing alcohol to release air bubbles. You will want to remove the soap from the pan when it has setup but is still warm to the touch. Once again, this will take approximately 20 minutes. However, setup time can vary depending on the temperature that you poured as well as the temperature of the room you are working in.

Slicing the Green Soap into StripsSlicing the Green Soap into Strips

Once again, after you have removed the soap from your pan, place the soap on a cutting board. Have it facing horizontally in front of you. Then, just as before, we are going to slice it into vertical strips that are about ¼ inch wide. They should look exactly the same as the red strips we cut previously.

Making the White Portion of the SoapMaking the White Portion of the Soap

Now, we can prepare the last portion of our holiday ribbon melt and pour soap project. This will be the white portion of the soap, which will follow very similar steps as the red and green soap portions did. However, instead of using the Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap, we are going to be using the Mango Butter Melt and Pour Soap. Start by weighing out 655 grams. Once it has melted, add 32 grams of the Holiday Pomegranate Fragrance Oil. Incorporate everything together by stirring.

This base is unscented with no Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), or any other added detergents. The ingredients in this base are glycerin, sodium stearate, sodium cocoate, and sodium myristate,. It also contains coconut oil (cocoa nucifera), palm oil (elaeis guineensis), sunflower oil (helianthus annus), purified water, mango butter (mangifera indica), and titanium dioxide. Mango butter has several beneficial properties to it such as soothing and softening the skin. Eczema and dryness of the skin can be helped by mango butter. Additionally, it cleanses the surface of the skin from blemishes or impurities, and helps to unclog pores.

Spraying the Strips of SoapSpraying the Strips of Soap

At this time, you will need one of your empty pans and the red and green strips that we previously created. Place the strips in the pan, leaving about ¼ inch gaps in between each. The soap is going to be white in color where the ¼ inch gaps are when we are finished pouring. Due to this, it does not matter how you choose to lay down your strips. You can lay them in whatever order you would like. We created variations when making this recipe. Some of our ribbon soap simply had green and white lines, while others had only red and white lines. We also created some with both green and red strips, as you can see in the picture. How you choose to do it is completely up to you! Once you have your strips laid out on the pan how you would like them to be, spray the soap strips in the pan with rubbing alcohol. This will help to ensure that they will adhere to the white soap we are about to pour on top of them.

Incorporating the White SoapIncorporating the White Soap

Then, we are going to finish off our strips by adding the white portion. Pour the melted soap into the pan where you have left the gaps in between the green and red. These gaps will be filled by the white soap and will eventually harden. Once you have done this, spray the soap with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles again. Just as you have before, remove the soap from the pan while it is still warm to the touch. Make sure that it has had enough time to set up. When it is at this stage, the strip will still be flexible, which makes it much easier to work with. This flexibility is essential for the final step, so the timing is very important.

Slicing and Bending the Finished ProductSlicing the Finished Product

For this next step, quickly and carefully slice the soap the way that we did for the green and red strips. However, this time we want to have eight strips. Once you have cut them, trim around the edges to remove any excess or jagged pieces.

Shaping the Ribbon Soap

For the final step in creating this holiday ribbon candy project, we are going to bend the strips of soap. We created a zig zag texture to resemble ribbon candy. The shape of this soap makes it that much cuter! Allow enough time for it to finish cooling down before use.

As we mentioned earlier, you are going to notice that you still have left over green and red strips of soap. All you have to do is simply repeat the steps, beginning when you make the portion for the white soap. This way, you can find a way to utilize the remaining strips and avoid any waste. It is also a great idea to use all of the extra pieces that you can make as a gift for someone this holiday season! We ended up having enough strips to create a total of four pans of striped soap! This will obviously vary depending on how thick you decided to cut your strips of green and red soap.

After you have made as much soap as you would like to, your Holiday Ribbon Melt and Pour Soap Project is now ready to be used! We hope that you enjoyed making this new and fun holiday themed product! If this soap making recipe has you hungry for the real thing, you can find it at the Vermont Country Store!

Reindeer Poo Cold Process Soap RecipeReindeer Poo Cold Process Soap Recipe

Today we are going to be talking about cold process soap making. This is a popular method of making  various creations of soap, so it is good to know all about it! If you have never experimented with cold process soap before, there is a lot to learn about. This particular CP soap recipe uses the very popular Natures Garden scent Reindeer Poo fragrance oil, which gives a fun Christmas scent to your soap. This is a great fragrance to use around Christmas because it a blend of eucalyptus and pine. Let’s get started on making our Reindeer Poo Cold Process Soap Recipe!

Saran Wrap

(added to cooled lye solution)

136 grams Palm Oil

2 grams FUN Soap Colorant Kelly Green

Colorant For White Soap:

Mixed with a small amount of soaping oils

Colorant For Red Soap:

Before we get started, it is important that you always clean and sanitize your work area and all of the packaging materials you will be using. You do not want soap making supplies to mix together from past creations, and you want to be extra careful with everything when using lye. We would also suggest that you wear safety glasses, gloves, a face mask, and protective clothing.

You can check out our Basic CP Soap Making Class to become familiar with this process before hand. We would also advise that you read about our Soap Making Safety Class before attempting to make any cold process soap if you have not made it before. Taking the proper precautions when making soap is a must.

Cold Process Soap

Cold process soap is made from the chemical reaction that happens when you mix together water, oils, and lye. As you may have heard before, this type of soap has no element of heat added to it when forming all of your soap creations. This is the main difference between cold process soap and hot process soap. Since there is no heat added, the curing time is much longer than it would take for hot process soap to cure. One benefit of cold process soap recipes is that your overall finished product will look nicer and more pristine. It may take longer to have the soap completed and ready to use, but it is worth the wait for an awesome end result! This recipe will provide you with three pounds of soap. Before we move on to making the cold process soap, it is important that we understand what goes into it.

Soap Making SuppliesSoap Making Supplies: Some of the Ingredients We Will Be Using

Before we begin creating the reindeer poo cold process soap recipe, let’s take a closer look at some of the ingredients that we will be working with.

Reindeer Poo Fragrance OilReindeer Poo Fragrance Oil

This Christmas season, laugh, have fun, and embrace a good sense of humor.  When creating Reindeer Poo Fragrance Oil, Natures Garden did just that!  This holiday fragrance will lift your spirits, and add a little magic to your life!  This scent starts with top notes of apples and pears. Then, those top notes are followed by middle notes of eucalyptus, pine, and geranium. Finally, it is balanced with bottom notes of patchouli, vanilla, and cedarwood. Reindeer Poo Fragrance Oil is both a Natures Garden original and a best selling fragrance oil!

FUN Soap ColroantsFUN Soap Colorants

The FUN Soap Colorants from Natures Garden are perfect for soap making. These colorants are pigments dispersed in vegetable glycerin. They don’t morph in cp soap. They are great for soap making because they allow you to create beautiful vibrant colors that will hold up to the saponification process.

Sodium Hydroxide LyeSodium Hydroxide Lye
The first step in our recipe is to prepare the lye solution. Before doing so, I would like to get the chance to educate you about lye. Lye is used in all kinds of soap, and you can not make soap without it! Sodium Hydroxide is the chemical name for lye. Lye is a necessity for making soap because it is an emulsifier, while soap is an emulsion. Soap is made up of different butters, oils, and water. Using basic chemistry, we know that water and oil do not mix with each other. In order to get them to mix, we need to add an emulsifier to it. Lye allows the butters, oils, and water that are needed to create soap to combine together, which otherwise would not be possible without this chemical reaction. Another type of soap to make is melt and pour. This is made differently than cold process soap, and the main difference between them is that melt and pour soap has already previously undergone the chemical reaction with lye. Therefore, even though you are not working directly with lye, your soap base was still created using it.

Preparing the Lye SolutionPreparing the Lye Solution

To prepare the lye solution, measure out 126 grams of Lye and 344 grams of distilled water. Slowly and in intervals, add the water to the lye solution. Never add water to Lye, as it can create a volcanic effect. With each interval, add a small amount of lye and stir slowly until it dissolves. Allow the Lye to completely dissolve and to cool to room temperature before moving on. At this point,
add 18 grams of sodium lactate to your cooled lye solution.

Preparing the Soaping OilsPreparing the Soaping Oils

Now, we can take the time to prepare the soaping oils that we will use in this recipe. Begin by weighing out 136 grams of Palm Oil, 226 grams of Coconut Oil 76, 181 grams of Sunflower Oil, 90 grams of Castor Oil, 90 grams of Grapeseed Oil, and 181 grams of Mango Butter. Melt all of these ingredients together in a bowl. After combining and melting all of these oils together, allow them to cool to room temperature just like with the lye solution. Once they are cooled down, we can move onto the next step.

Combining the Oils and LyeCombining the Soaping Oils and the Lye Solution

After both the lye solution and the soaping oils have completely cooled down to around 110 degrees Fahrenheit, combine them together into one bowl. Add the lye solution to the soaping oils. Using a stick blender, stir the two together and to create an emulsification. Next, incorporate the Natures Garden Reindeer Poo Fragrance Oil along with the vanilla white color stabilizer. Use the stick blender once again to blend all ingredients together.

Blending the Colorant into the Soap BatterAdding the FUN Soap Colorants

For the next step, we are going to divide the soap batter we have just mixed into three bowls with portions that are all of equal size. We will be making a white soap, a green soap, and a red soap to mix for this recipe. To the first bowl, which will be our white soap, add 7 grams of titanium dioxide mixed with a small amount of your soaping oils. Use the stick blender again to mix together and leave that bowl alone for now. To the second bowl, just add 4 grams of the neon green colorant and 2 grams of the Kelly green FUN Soap Colorant, then stick blend. To the third and final bowl, add the tomato red FUN Soap Colorant colorant and stick blend as well so that the color is fully incorporated.

Incorporating the Batters TogetherIncorporating the Batters Together

Now, we are going to pull an empty bowl for the next part. Beginning with the red soap batter you have created, drop several “plops” into it in a clockwise motion. Keep dropping these in different sections around the bowl until all of the red soap batter has been used. You are going to repeat this same process with the green batter, by placing it in different areas around the bowl than you did for the red batter. Lastly, repeat this step for the white soap batter. Place a spatula into the bowl and move it around in a circular motion throughout the bowl to create swirls. Once you are happy with your swirls, allow the soap batter to thicken.

Putting Your Soap Batter Into a Piping BagPutting Your Soap Batter Into a Piping Bag

Once your soap batter has reached a thick consistency that is similar to frosting, put it into a piping bag that has a rounded tip. These are just like the bags and tips you would use when applying frosting or icing onto cupcakes and other baked goods. This method is necessary to create the “poo” shape we want and to form your final product. If you do not have a decorating bag, you can use a gallon sized Ziploc bag.  You will just need to cut the corner and place the decorating in that corner.

The Finished Product!Your Finished Product!

Using the piping bag filled with the swirled and colorful soap batter, pipe it out onto a silicone mat as if you were frosting cupcakes. This motion will create the poop shape that you want for this creation! Piping this out will bring together the scent of the Reindeer Poo Fragrance Oil with a life like form of colorful reindeer poo!

Cleaning Up the Work Station

After you have finished with this Reindeer Poo Cold Process Soap recipe, it is time to clean the work station. We wanted to give you some tips here because you were working with lye and it is important to be safe with the clean up process, just as it was for every step before hand. When your project is all said and done, you will need to wash all of the materials you used like you normally would. However, there may be residue left over from un-reacted lye. Since vinegar is acidic, it will take care of and neutralize the un-reacted lye on these surfaces so that the next time your materials will be ready to go! Once you have wiped everything down well with the vinegar, it will be safe to wash the materials with soap and water.

We hope that you have learned a lot about this method of soap making and all of the proper precautions to take. We hope it was a lot of fun creating this Reindeer Poo Cold Process Soap recipe! If you would like to reach out to Natures Garden and show us this and other creations that you make, follow and share with us!

Different Types of Leaves

The fun aspect of this recipe is that there are a lot of different types of leaves that you can choose from. I’m going to highlight some different types of common leaves. This should help you decide which leaves you’d want to use for this recipe. Just know that some leaves can come in rounded shapes, pointy shapes, or even very narrow shapes. Depending on where you live can affect your access to different types of leaves. Outlined below are some more common leaves that you can find almost anywhere.

Options for Different Types of Leaves

For a larger, more full leaf you could decide to go with the Maple leaf which will give you almost a star shaped leaf. If you wanted a smooth, rounded leaf you could also use a Southern Magnolia. For a smaller, more rounded leaf, the Hickory might be what you are looking for. Another pretty leave that you can use is the Red Maple. The Red Maple leaf has three, rigid triangular points on its end that are unique to the shape of the leaf. There are many more shapes and sizes that you can use, it’s up to you to decide what you want.

Fall Leaves MP Soap Recipe: Ingredient Spotlight

Before we begin creating the Fall Leaves MP Soap Recipe, Let’s take a closer look at some of the ingredients that we will be using.

Maple Whiskey Toddy Fragrance OilFeaturing Maple Whiskey Toddy Fragrance Oil

Maple Whiskey Toddy is commonly used as a warm, after dinner drink that is mostly enjoyed in the cooler months of fall. This warm beverage first entices the user with notes of maple and rum, which is then followed by a smooth vanilla base and buttery caramelized sugar. This fragrance oil can be used to create handcrafted soap. In addition to soap, when used in candle making, this fragrance will leave a nice, strong aroma for your home. This fragrance can be used in candle waxes, potpourri, bath oils, lotions, and cleaning products as well. The possibilities are endless! Use this maple fragrance oil to bring the warm sensations of fall into your home.

Top Notes:  Vanilla Essence, Lemon Peel, Chilled Whiskey Accord
Mid Notes: Amber Blooms, Vermont Maple Syrup Accord, Damask Rose
Base Notes: White Tonka Beans, Frosted Musk, White Cedarwood

Diamond Clear Melt and Pour SoapUses for Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap

Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap from Natures Garden Soap Making Supplies has a high moisturizing content and is great for lathering qualities in any homemade soap recipe. The higher the amount of lather in the soap, the more suds it will create as you use it. This soap base is very fun to use in recipes where you want to bring out any vibrant colors in your soap.

Vanilla White Color StabilizerUses for Vanilla White Color Stabilizer

There are a lot of different aqueous bases that tend to have color stability problems from vanillin and other aromatic ingredients. Vanilla White Color Stabilizer can be used in any soap making or bath products that you create for keeping the original true color in your creation.

Gathering the LeavesGathering the Leaves

The first step is to gather leaves. Some good places to gather them include the local park, your backyard, or in a forest.  We used different types and sizes of leaves for making this recipe. We collected around 30 leaves. Regardless of this number, we were still able to reuse some of the leaves a few times. The size of the leaves will impact how much this recipe will yield. Using larger leaves will produce a smaller amount of Fall Leaves when making this Nature’s Garden soap recipe.  After collecting the leaves, place them on a wax paper lined pan. Putting the leaves on the wax paper will ensure that they peel off easier. In addition, it will keep your work area clean. This will guarantee the best result with your Fall Leaves Soap Recipe.

Melting the Melt and Pour SoapMelting the Melt and Pour Soap

This next step to take is to prepare your soap base for melting. Use your soap cutter to cut and weigh 40 grams of Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base. Cutting the soap into smaller chunks will make the process of melting the soap easier. Next, take the soap and place it in a microwave safe bowl or container. Microwave the chunks of soap. Depending on your microwave, it can take less than 15 seconds to melt the soap. The soap needs to be melted completely, otherwise; your soap won’t look as smooth as it could look.

Coloring the MP SoapColoring the MP Soap

After the soap is completely melted, the next step is coloring the MP soap base. The fun part about this recipe is that you can add any color to the soap base and layer on any color onto the leaf. You can set up multiple bowls, all with 40 grams of Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base. Then, once you are finished painting your leaves with that color, you can start this process over and create another color of soap. We don’t recommend creating all of your colors at once because the soap will setup too quickly if you create more than one at a time.

Different Types of Color Combinations

There are many different color combinations that are available to you in this recipe. So, when creating this recipe, we found that the first few layers will create a translucent look. Once we added about four layers it created a solid leaf that you could not see through.  So, we used this to our advantage. For example, if you add a layer of red oxide colored soap and a second layer of the Kelly green, then you can get a leaf a beautiful red- green combo. Another color combination is Yellow with the Kelly Green which will give you a vibrant yellow-green color. You can also try the Orange Oxide with the Red Oxide colorant to give you a bright red-orange colored leaf that will stand out from the rest of the colors. There are a lot of other color combinations that you can experiment with.

Adding the Fragrance Oil to the SoapAdding the Fragrance Oil to the Soap

The next step is to add your fragrance to the mixed soap base. You want to add 2 grams of the Maple Whiskey Toddy Fragrance Oil. Then add 2 grams of the Vanilla White Color Stabilizer. Fragrance oil with a vanillin content can cause discoloration in finished soap. The reason it does this is because fragrance oil will oxidize over time. To keep our mixture true to its color, we add the Vanilla White Color Stabilizer to make sure we keep the original color we had in the bowl.  After adding the fragrance to the mixture, stir it thoroughly with the mixing spoons.

Painting the Fall Leaf MP SoapPainting the Fall Leaf MP Soap

Take the paintbrush and paint each one of the leaves. You don’t want to apply too thick of a coat to make sure that you have enough of a soap base for all of the leaves.  After each leaf has been painted, spray it with rubbing alcohol and let it setup. After it has setup, begin spraying each leaf with the alcohol, then apply a second coat to it. The second coat doesn’t have to be the same color. You can layer whichever color you think would look the best. Keep repeating this process until you achieve 4 coats, or whichever thickness you desire. You should also know that with less layers, you will have more transparency. We did create some in this manner to give us a variety of leaves with different looks.

Removing the Soap from the LeavesRemoving the Soap from the Leaves

When the soap has finished setting up, you want to remove the soap from the leaf. To do this, you want to make sure to carefully peel away one end of the leaf, and slowly make your way across the leaf. Keep slowly peeling away the entire leaf as you don’t want it to break or crumble on you. After the soap portion of the leaf has been removed, it is ready to use!

Ways to Decorate your Home with These LeavesWays to Decorate your Home with These Leaves

You can choose any area of your home to decorate with these leaves. Some fun areas where that you can decorate with these leaves include the bathroom, kitchen, and any type of utility sink throughout the house. If you work outside in your garage, you can setup these leaves on the sink out in the garage to wash your hands off with afterward. the colors of these leaves can also be fun to incorporate into any kind of decorations that you setup for guests in your kitchen. There are many endless possibilities for how you can decorate your living area with these leaves.

Picking up leaves isn’t the only fun fall activity that you can do. There are a lot of different fall activities outlined in this Fall Festivals article from Country Living that you can do. Some of these activities include Pumpkin Patch Festivals, Apple Festivals, Corn Mazes, and many more. There are always many ways to enjoy your fall, and making this Fall Leaves Soap Recipe was just another way that you can bring the sensation of fall into your home.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add?How Much Fragrance Do I Add?

If you have ever asked yourself and been unsure how to answer the question “How much fragrance do I add to this cosmetic or candle making recipe?”, then this is the perfect craft blog for you! We at Natures Garden would like to help you learn about essential oil and fragrance oil usage rates. So, you can know exactly how to scent your own homemade candles and cosmetic recipes. Not only will we provide a bit more insight on both our recommendations and IFRA’s, but we will help you figure out how to calculate the amount of scent you need for your homemade craft recipes. So, let’s get started!

How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Add?: What is the Usage Rate Used for?

Simply, the usage rate for a scent tells you how much of a scent you can add to your homemade candle and soap recipes. The usage rate is given in the form of a percent, which tells you the percent of this aroma that can be used in your candle, soap, and cosmetic recipes. So, you would take the overall weight of your craft recipe and multiply it by the percent to determine the amount of scent that you can include.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: NG Recommended Usage Rates

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Where Do I Find the Usage Rate? How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Where Do I Find the NG Usage Rate?

For each fragrance oil we at Natures Garden have an NG Recommended Fragrance Usage chart. On the page of each fragrance oil, you can find a chart that provides you with the maximum amount of fragrance that we would suggest for various products. Once on the page for your scent, just scroll down and you will find the chart in the description.  Each fragrance oil will have its own chart.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: IFRA Usage Rates

What Is IFRA?

If you have never heard of IFRA before, they are a globally recognized organization that manages the safe use of scented oils. These guidelines are based on assessments from the Research Institute For Fragrance Material (RIFM). So, they will determine the amount of a specific scented oil that can be added to a certain product. So, the limits given by IFRA on the certificates are the absolute maximum that you can use in a product and should not be surpassed. Of course, you don’t have to add their maximum amount on every occasion. You can add less than this amount. This is the maximum scent limit that you should never go over.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Where Do You Find the IFRA?Where Do You Find the IFRA Certificate?

You can find the IFRA data sheet for each one of our scented oils. Each Natures Garden fragrance oil page has a link to its individual IFRA Certificate. If you aren’t sure where to find this information sheet, then take a look at the picture to the left. The link that you are looking for is on the right side of the page beneath the “Add To Cart” button. If you click on the blue colored link that says ” Fragrance Oil IFRA Certificate”, then you will be shown the IFRA Certificate of Compliance with all the maximum usage rates for various products with that particular fragrance oil. This data sheet will pop up in front of the current page to either be reviewed or printed out.  Note: On our mobile site, you can find this information at the end of the description, right above the videos section.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: How Do I Read an IFRA Sheet? How Do I Read an IFRA Certificate?

The IFRA sheet is broken down into eleven different categories. Each of these categories are based on different types of products.  So, you will first need to know the product that you intend to make. The products are separated into categories because they are used different ways either in room scents or on the body. Each category is listed with the maximum level of fragrance that can be added. However, if you below that list, then you will find a description for each of the categories that were listed above. You can use these category descriptions to find where product that you want to make would fit in. Once you have determined which category that you scented product falls into, scroll back up to find the usage rate for that category. This will be the maximum amount of this scent that you can add to your handcrafted recipes.

Example of Reading an IFRA Certificate

For instance, let’s say you wanted to create a face mask recipe with the Angelica Fragrance Oil. You would scroll down and look for this product in the descriptions. A facial recipe would fall under category 5, which you know this because it is in the description for this category. Then, you would need to go back and look at the amount for category 5. For this scented oil, the most that you can add to this cosmetic recipe is 6%. While you can add less than this amount, you can’t add any more than the 6% to your facial recipe.

Is There An IFRA Sheet For Essential Oils?

There sure is! For each individual essential oil you can find an IFRA Certificate in the same area of the description that you would find in the fragrance oil description.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Why Is the Natures Garden Usage Rate Different From IFRA?

If you already know about the IFRA sheets, then you may have notices that the Natures Garden recommendation may occasionally be different. This is because there are two things to consider when adding fragrance oil to your homemade soap and candle recipes. First, the IFRA sheet will provide you with a maximum amount of fragrance that you can comfortably add to you various craft recipes. This amount is the most scent that you are allowed to use in a recipe before it is too much. If there is more that this amount of fragrance, it could potentially irritate the skin.

Second, we at Natures Garden have a maximum amount of fragrance that we include in products to maintain integrity of the recipe. While you may be able to add more scent to your homemade craft recipes, it is possible to add to much fragrance. If you add too much fragrance oil to your recipe, then it may leak out of the product or cause other possible issues. So, we have a set maximum that we use for various products.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Adding More or Less Than 5% Fragrance Oil

So, can you add more than our recommend scent amounts without ruining your products? Technically, yes when the IFRA allows it. But, you will need to experiment to ensure that your products maintain their integrity. Remember that just because you can do something doesn’t mean that its a great idea. We find that adding more than 5% of fragrance oil, when IFRA allow for it is just too much fragrance oil in soap. So, we will never suggest that you use more than 5% of the fragrance in our homemade soap recipes.  On the other hand, there are some fragrance oils that have lower usage rates.  Below, we will talk about both scenarios.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Can I Add Above 5% Fragrance Oil?How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Can I Add Above 5% Fragrance Oil?

While we at Natures Garden never recommend that you use above 5%, but you will sometimes find that the IFRA will permit you to use more. For some, this difference can make it confusing as to what amount to use in their products. So, let’s look at a scent where the IFRA allows more than our suggested amount. According to the data sheet, you can technically add up to 15.2% of the Alpine Snowdrift Fragrance Oil to a homemade soap recipe. However, they do not take into consideration the quality of the product. Their recommendation simply means that you have the ability to add scent up to that amount without irritating the skin.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: What If The IFRA Has No Restriction? How Much Fragrance Do I Add: What If The IFRA Has No Restriction?

Another difference between our recommendation and the data  sheet is when IFRA has no restriction for adding the scent to bath and body products. For example, the IFRA sheet says there is no restriction on the amount of McIntosh Apple Fragrance Oil that you can add to you products. However, it wouldn’t make sense to add 100% or 99% fragrance oil to your soap recipe. Think about it for a second. If you went to that extreme, you wouldn’t have a bar of soap.

https://www.naturesgardencandles.com/mcintosh-apple-fragrance-oilHow Much Fragrance Do I Add: Why Is The Usage Rate Below 5% for Fragrance?

Although our maximum usage rate for making soap is 5%, not all fragrances can be added at this high of an amount. If you check the IFRA sheet for this scented oil, you would find that category 9, which includes soap, and the carrot cake scent can only include up to 1%. While your homemade soap has the potential to carry more fragrance oil, you shouldn’t add any more than the 1% amount. This scent can only be included up to 1% according to the IFRA’s standards and anymore could irritate the skin. So, we provide a recommendation that is in compliance with IFRA at 1% usage rate for the carrot cake scent.

How Much Fragrance Do I Add: Need More Help With Percents?

If you aren’t necessarily math inclined, then you may benefit from practicing a bit more with percents. The Percentages in Real Life article from GCF Global will walk you through a few different situations that involved using percents. These real world situations use the same method as calculating the usage rate, so this practice will definitely help with craft making. Plus, you can use this knowledge to better navigate sales tax, markdowns in retail, and calculating a tip at a restaurant. So, you will definitely want to check this page out if you need the practice!

Now, you are ready to make this lovely bubble bar recipe!

You will need to add 226 grams of the Baking Soda, 145 grams of the Corn Starch, 6 grams of the White Kaolin Clay Powder, and 10 grams of the Xanthan Gum to your mixing bowl. You will want to use your hands, with latex gloves, to break up any clumps that may be left in these powders. Once this mixture is free of clumps, you can set this bowl to the side for now.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Heating the Oils and Butters

Next, you are going to want to use the double boiler that you have created. You will need to add 70 grams of the Shea Butter, 30 grams of the Mango Butter, and 9 grams of the Avocado Oil to the smaller pot of your double boiler. While the double boiler will help prevent these natural oils from scorching, you still need to stir occasionally to melt everything. Once all of these cosmetic ingredients have melted, you are ready to turn off the stove and move on to the next step in the process.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Mix Everything TogetherDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Mix Everything Together

Now you are ready to mix the melted cosmetic oils and the dry mixture together. So, retrieve your mixing bowl of the dry cosmetic ingredients. You will be adding the melted oils and butters to this bowl. You will want to use your gloved hands to mix these wholesale cosmetic ingredients together very well. Also, you will want to include 29 grams of the Vegetable Glycerin and 1 teaspoon Diamond Dust Mica. Then, you will need to continue to mix these bath and body ingredients until everything is incorporated into an even, dough-like consistency.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Adding the Dreama Fragrance OilDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Adding the Dreama Fragrance Oil

Also, you will want to add the scent to your bubble bar batter. You will need to add 23 grams of the Dreama Fragrance Oil to a separate small bowl. When you are ready to mix in this scented oil, pour the fragrance into your bubble bar mixture. You will need to use your gloved hands to thoroughly mix this floral aroma into your dough.

You are going to love this scented oil in your slsa free bubble bar recipe! The Dreama Fragrance Oil begins with lovely notes of oakmoss and lilies. These notes are followed by middle notes of ylang ylang and jasmine and bottom notes of amber, musk, and sandalwood.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Separating the Bubble Bar

Next, you are going to want to separate your bubble bar mixture into three separate portions. But, these three portions won’t be equal. One portion will become the base of your homemade bubble bar and will use the most. A second portion will be the petals of the flower on top of the bubble bar. The last portion will be the smallest portion that is used for the middle of the bubble bar flower.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Preparing the PetalsDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Preparing the Petals

Now, you are going to remove some of the bubble bar mixture to use for the petals of the flower later on. So, you will need to take 200 grams of the overall mixture and put it in a new mixing bowl. This portion will remain uncolored to be the white petals of the flower. You can set this bowl aside for now to use in a later step.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Preparing the Yellow CenterDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Preparing the Yellow Center

Next, you are going to take a bit more from the bubble bar mixture to prepare the yellow center of the flower. So, you will need to remove 29 grams of the batter and add it to a new mixing bowl. You will need to add 3 drops of the Neon Yellow FUN Soap Colorant and 2 drops of the Yellow Oxide FUN Soap Colorant to your bowl. You will need to use your gloved hands to mix the color into the batter thoroughly.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Preparing the Green BaseDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Preparing the Green Base

You will need 260 grams of the bubble bar dough to create the base of your finished bath and body recipe. This bubble bar portion will be colored with 3 drops of the Neon Green FUN Soap Colorant and 2 drops of the Kelly Green FUN Soap Colorant. You will need to use your clean, gloved hands to mix the color into the batter thoroughly.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Filling the Cosmetic MoldDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Filling the Cosmetic Mold

Now that your green portion is ready to use, you are going to use it to fill the base of your bubble bar. So, you will need to get the 6 Cavity Muffin Silicone Soap Mold. Then, you will use your gloved hands to pack the cavities in the mold until you use all of the dough. This green portion will allow you to make about five bubble bars in total. Once you have used all of your green mixture, you are ready to move on to the next step in the process.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Creating the Flower CenterDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Creating the Flower Center

Next, you are going to start creating the flower portion for these bath and body creations. First, you need to create the center of the flower.  You will want to grab the yellow portion that you had prepared in a previous step. Now, grab a small piece of this portion and roll it into a ball shape. Then, you will want to press your yellow ball into the center of each green base. This will act as the center of each flower. Of course, the green base will still be in the mold as it has not set up yet.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Start Making the PetalsDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Start Making the Petals

After adding the center of the flower to you mold, you are ready to start creating the petals. So, you will want to pinch off an amount between 7 grams and 8 grams of your uncolored portion. Use your fingers to roll your dough into a thick petal shape. Also, you will want your petal to look similar to the picture shown to the left. You will need to create 25 petals in total, which will end up being five petals for each flower.

Dreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Finish Making the FlowerDreama Bubble Bar Recipe: Finish Making the Flower

You will need to use the petals you made to finish up the flower. Since you will need to have five for each flower, you will want to space out the petals right. For each petal you will want to start by setting it in place. Then, press it down using more pressure on the area of the petal that is closest to the outer edge and light pressure near the yellow center.  You will want to repeat this process for each of the petals.
