Vamp Vogue Fragrance OilVamp Vogue Fragrance Oil

Before we begin, let’s take a look at the fragrance oil we will be using.  This soap making project will use Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil from Natures Garden Soap Making Supplies. This Halloween fragrance oil by Natures Garden is a sexy, gothic statement. It starts with top notes of Blood Orange, Ruby Red Grapefruit, and Mandarin.  Then, it the citrus notes are followed by middle notes of Geranium, Bourbon, Oak Moss, and Dark Patchouli.  Finally, these notes are sitting on notes of Black Amber, Sandal Tree, Cashmere, and Musk. Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil is an NG original scent!

First, you will need to make the red portion of the vampire teeth.  In order to create the teeth, you will need 24 grams red play dough soap. To color our soap dough, we used 30 drops of the tomato red soap colorant.  Below, you will find the ingredients and amounts for this recipe as well as step by step instructions.  You will need about 3 grams of the soap dough for each set of vampire teeth.  For our Vampire Melt and Pour Soap Recipe, we will need 8 sets of vampire teeth.  So, you will need a total of 24 grams of the soap dough.  However, this recipe makes about 9 ounces of soap dough.  So, you will have extra soap dough for later use.

103 grams Arrowroot Powder
24 grams Vegetable Glycerin
112 grams Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base
14 grams Fractionated Coconut Oil
13 grams Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil
13 grams Vanilla White Color Stabilizer
3 grams Optiphen Preservative
30 drops Tomato Red FUN Soap Colorant

Prepare the Soap Dough

Create the Arrowroot PasteCreate the Arrowroot Paste

So, in a small mixing bowl, weigh out 24 grams of Vegetable Glycerin and 21 grams Arrowroot Powder.  Then, blend these two ingredients with a fork to make a paste.  You can set this portion aside for the moment, we will come back to it.

Melt the Soap Base

Next, you will need to melt your soap base. So, you will need to first cut your soap base.  Then, in your microwave safe container, weigh out and melt 112 grams of Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base from Natures Garden.  Then, heat the soap in the microwave 30 seconds at a time. stir gently between each 30-second burst.  Keep melting until all soap base is in a liquid state.

Add the Vamp Vogue Fragrance OilAdd the Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil

Once all the  diamond clear soap base is melted, add 14 grams Fractionated Coconut Oil, 13 grams of the Vanilla White Color Stabilizer, and 13 grams Natures Garden’s Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil.  Stir until all of the ingredients are blended together.  Then, add your paste mixture that you set aside to the melted clear soap mixture and stir thoroughly.

Add the Soap ColorantAdd the Soap Colorant

At this time, you will need to add your soap colorant.  We used 30 drops of the tomato red FUN Soap Colorant.  Mix well. Lastly, you will need to add the Optiphen. So, place your thermometer in the mixture and wait for the correct temperature.  Optiphen should be added to your mixture around 120F.  When your mixture is at this temperature, add 3 grams of the Optiphen.  Then, mix thoroughly.

Add Arrowroot PowderAdd Arrowroot Powder

Now, weigh out 80 grams of the Arrowroot Powder.  You will want to slowly add this ingredient, working it in with a fork.  So, add some of the arrowroot powder and blend it into the mixture.  Then, add a bit more.  Repeat this process until you have added all of the arrowroot powder.  As you add the powder the mixture will thicken.

Completing the Soap Play DoughCompleting the Soap Play Dough

Next, you will need to lay out a piece of wax paper.  Then, you will need an additional 2 grams of arrowroot powder.  This will be used to coat your hands as you work with the dough.  It will prevent the dough from sticking to your hands.  Coat your hands with the arrowroot powder and place the soap dough on your wax paper. Begin kneading your dough until you are able to roll it into a ball.  Then, roll your dough into a ball and allow set out 20 minutes. Finally, the soap play dough soap is ready to use.  Pull about 24 grams from the ball to use for your vampire teeth.  The remaining dough can be stored in a Ziploc bag for later use.

Using the Red Soap DoughUsing the Red Soap Dough

Next, you will need to fill each cavity of the vampire teeth mold using the red soap dough.  You will fill only the gum portion of the mold with the red soap putty.  If needed, use a cotton swab to clean the teeth area and remove any red soap dough that may have gotten into this part of the mold.

Prepare the White Melt and Pour Soap

Adding the White MP Soap for the Vampire TeethAdding the White MP Soap for the Vampire Teeth

In order to finish creating the vampire teeth, you will need to create the white mp soap portion of the teeth.  So, weigh out and melt 136 grams of the hemp oil melt and pour soap. Once melted, add 6 grams of Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil and 6 grams of Vanilla White Color Stabilizer.  Then, stir and pour the melted soap into each cavity of the vampire teeth mold. Lastly, spray the soap with rubbing alcohol to release any air bubbles. Let the teeth to fully setup before removing them from the mold.

Prepare the White Soap for the Loaf PortionPrepare the White Soap for the Loaf Portion

Prepare the white portion of the soap loaf. You will need to weigh out and melt 870 grams of the hemp oil soap base.  Once melted, add 43 grams of the Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil. In addition, add 43 grams of the Vanilla White Color Stabilizer.  Stir to blend the ingredients together. Then, pour the melted soap into your two pound soap mold. Finally, spray the soap with rubbing alcohol to release any air bubbles. Be sure to allow the soap to setup completely before moving on.  Note:  If you are using the silicone 4 loaf mold, you will need to divide the soap equally between two of the cavities in the mold.

Prepare the Red Melt and Pour Soap

Prepare the Red Soap Loaf LayerPrepare the Red Soap Loaf Layer

Now, we will prepare the red layer of soap. So, melt 200 grams of the Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base.  Once melted, add 10 grams of the Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil from Natures Garden, 10 grams of the Vanilla White Color Stabilizer, and 6 drops of the Tomato Red FUN Soap.  Finally, spray the white soap that is in the soap mold with rubbing alcohol. Finally, pour the red soap directly on top of it.  Spray the red soap with rubbing alcohol.

Insert the Vampire TeethInsert the Vampire Teeth

Finally, we will begin placing the teeth in the soap loaf.  For this step, timing is extremely important.  You will want your red layer of soap to begin to setting up.  However, you do not want it to completely setup. It should have a somewhat thick film formed but should still be soft and will have a somewhat rubbery feel to it.  This is important because you need the soap to be soft enough that you can still press the fangs of the teeth into the soap loaf.  However, it needs to be hard enough that the teeth will stay standing. So, once the soap is ready, spray the red soap with rubbing alcohol. Then, gently press the teeth into the soap mold. Make sure that your place the teeth evenly throughout the soap mold.  Allow the soap to finish setting up before moving to the next step.

Cut the Soap LoafCut the Soap Loaf

Allow your soap loaf to completely setup.  Remove the soap from the mold.  Then, use the mitre box and mitre box cutter to slice your soap into eight bars.

Adding the Red Soap DripsAdding the Red Soap Drips

Our last step will be dripping the white soap with red soap to give it a dripping blood look.  So, we will drip bar of soap with red melt and pour soap.  Place each bar of soap on a piece of wax paper.  Then, you will need to melt 30 grams of Natures Garden’s Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap.  Then, add 1 gram of the Vamp Vogue Fragrance Oil and 1 gram Vanilla White Color Stabilizer. In addition, add 3 drops of the Tomato Red FUN Soap Colorant and stir.  Next, using a disposable pipette, drip red soap vertically down the white soap. You want to give the soap the appearance of blood dripping from the teeth punctures. Once you have dripped each bar of soap with the red soap, allow the soap to finish setting up.  When your soap is done setting up, it is ready to use!

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Preparing the Lye SolutionKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Preparing the Lye Solution

First, you are going to want to prepare the lye solution for your soap recipe. Of course, you will need to prepare this solution in a well ventilated area. Also, you will need to wear a face mask and gloves. Now, measure out 516 grams of the Water and 193 grams of the Lye- Sodium Hydroxide in separate containers. Now, SLOWLY add the lye to the water. Remember, always add the lye to the water and never the reverse. You will want to carefully stir your water as you add the lye. Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Preparing the Soap OilsKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Preparing the Soap Oils

While the lye solution is cooling, you can begin to prepare your cosmetic oils. So, measure 272 grams of the Sunflower Oil, 299 grams of the Coconut Oil 76, 163 grams of the Cocoa Butter, 136 grams of the Meadowfoam Seed Oil, 68 grams of the Argan Oil, 95 grams of the Rice Bran Oil, 231 grams of the Shea Butter, and 95 grams of the Fractionated Coconut Oil. Add these cosmetic oils to a microwave safe bowl and use small increments to melt these oils down. If your oil mixture cools too quickly, you can reheat to bring your temperatures closer to each other.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Preparing the Soap ColorantsKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Preparing the Soap Colorants

While you are waiting for your mixtures to be at the right temperature, you can get your soap colorants ready. So, you will want to get your four small bowls. Then, use the weights listed above to add the colorants to the bowls for the Pink Colorant, Light Green Colorant, Dark Green Colorant, and the White Colorant. After, you can set these bowls aside for a later step.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Combining the Lye and Cosmetic OilsKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Combining the Lye and Cosmetic Oils

Once the temperature for your lye solution and cosmetic oils is around 100 degrees Fahrenheit to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, you are ready to combine them. Then, you are going to need to use a stick blender to mix these two mixtures together. Of course, you will need to make sure that you continue mixing until you hit trace to make sure your soaping ingredients are fully emulsified. After this blend of cosmetic oils and lye solution hits trace, you are ready to add the fragrance oil.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Kiwi Watermelon Fragrance OilKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Kiwi Watermelon Fragrance Oil

Now, you are ready to add 103 grams of Kiwi Watermelon Fragrance Oil to your cosmetic mixture. This scrumptious fragrance oil begins with juicy notes of watermelon and grapefruit. These scents are followed by middle notes of strawberry, green melon, and white lily. Finally, these aromas are sitting on base notes of ozone, Balsamic vanilla, and fresh woods. After adding this scrumptious soap scent, you will need to stick blend to fully incorporate the scent.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Dividing the Uncolored Soap MixtureKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Dividing the Uncolored Soap Mixture

You are going to separate the uncolored portion of the mixture into two halves. Half of this batch will be swirled with the other colored soap portions.  So, you will want to get a large mixing bowl and add 425 grams of this mixture into another bowl. The remaining portion of the uncolored soap batch will be used to top your soap in a later step. So, you can set this bowl aside for now.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Cosmetic ColorantsKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Cosmetic Colorants

Next, you are going to add the soap colorants to your soap batter. So, you are going to need to get three more small mixing bowls. You will need to add about 425 grams of your scented soap mixture to each of the bowls. Now, you will have your four portions of soap ready to color! So, you will add each one of your small bowls of portioned colorant to each one of your mixing bowls. Then, you can use the stick blender to incorporate the colorant. You will clean the stick blender clean before mixing the next color.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Mixing Your Colored SoapKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Mixing Your Colored Soap

Now, you will need to grab your deep mixing bowl of 425 grams of the white soap. Next, you will need to add the Pink Colorant, Light Green Colorant, and Dark Green Colorant to the white soap in your deep mixing bowl. So, start with the pink soap mixture. You will want to pour small amounts of the soap directly on top of the white soap in various places. The, repeat this pour with each of the green soap portions. Once you are finished, the bowl of soap in front of you will look a bit like a color wheel.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Swirl and Pour the SoapKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Swirl and Pour the Soap

Now that all your colored soap portions are added to this deep mixing bowl, you are going to swirl the colors together and pour the mixture into your soap mold. You will want to make sure that you don’t mix too much, as you want to keep the separate colors. So, you may want to only use one circular swirl. After, you are ready to pour the mixture into the loaf soap mold.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Topping to Your CP SoapKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Topping to Your CP Soap

Lastly, you are going to add the top to your soap loaf. You will need to wait for this white soap portion to cool and thicken before you can add it to your soap. Once your white soap is ready to use, you are going to use your spatula to add this whipped soap to the top of your soap. After you have this uncolored soap added to your soap loaf, you can use your spatula to create peaks and texture. You will not need too much of either the mica dust or the herb. We used less than a gram of each on our soap.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Removing Soap from the MoldKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Removing Soap from the Mold

After 12-48 hours you are ready to remove your soap from the loaf mold. Gently remove the soap from the silicone soap mold. Once you have your finished soap mold removed, you will be ready to add the finishing touches, cut your bars, and wait for the soap to cure.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Finishing TouchesKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Adding the Finishing Touches

Once the cold process soap has been removed from the mold, you are ready to add the final few touches to your soap recipe. First, you can sprinkle of diamond dust mica on to the top of your soap. Also, you can sprinkle on some whole poppy seeds onto the top of this soap loaf. This wholesale cosmetic herb was included to resemble kiwi seeds.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Slicing Your Soap LoafKiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Slicing Your Soap Loaf

Now, you will want to cut your soap loaf into individual bars. You will want to cut your soap before you let your soap cure. Otherwise, your soap bars may be more likely to become too brittle and flake away as you cut. Now, you will want to set up your soap bars in a place where they can cure.

Kiwi Watermelon Soap Recipe: Using Your Finished CP Soap

Of course, you will need to wait for your cold process soap to cure before you can use your homemade soap bars. This can take from 2 and 8 weeks to completely cure. After your soap bars have set up, your soap is ready to use! You can use your soap packaging supplies to store some of your soap bars. Plus, your cp soap bars will be ready to use as well.

Now, our list wouldn’t be complete without Bacon Fragrance Oil from Natures Garden.  We challenged our perfumist to create a scent that smelled like real bacon.  Smells like bacon to us!

Did you know?  The average American consumes 17 pounds of bacon each year.  And yet, another fact about bacon is that it is actually used to flavor a variety of beer, vodkas, and bourbons.  Interesting.

Beer Fragrance OilBest Scents for Fathers Day:  Beer Fragrance Oil

Next on our list of scents for Father’s Day is Beer Fragrance Oil.  Throughout the history of Natures Garden, this fragrance oil was probably the most difficult scent for our perfumist to create.  There were actually a total of 4 different perfumists who attempted to create a good beer scent for us.  We did not want a stale-smelling beer scent, and we did not want a beer scent that had floral notes; like so many we have tested.  In this truly unique fragrance, the perfumist combined the aroma of malt liquor straight from the tap, and gave it a fruity twist.  He creatively combined notes of malt liquor and hops with fruity notes of strawberry, pineapple, apple, and raspberry.  CHEERS!!!  Of course, this is a Natures Garden original scent.

Coffee Scents:  Hazelnut Coffee Fragrance OilCoffee Scents:  Hazelnut Coffee Fragrance Oil

First, our Hazelnut Coffee Fragrance Oil is strong coffee scent that is great in both bath and body products and candles. It is the aroma of Arabica coffee beans that are blended with both nutty hazel nuts and creamy vanilla at its base. Not only is this coffee scent fabulous on its own, it is also amazing when mixed with other scents.  I actually accidentally put one of these melts in my burner that already had a Pink Sugar melt in it.  I have to say this is now my go to fragrance for my home.

Coffee Scents:  Hazelnut Coffee Soap

So, how does Hazelnut Coffee Fragrance Oil do in cold process soap? Well, there is no acceleration, no ricing, and no separation. It also had a good scent retention.

Coffee Scents:  Hazelnut Coffee Candle

Now, let’s talk candle making! How do we suggest coloring your hazelnut coffee scented candles?  We suggest using five drops of brown liquid candle dye. Alternatively, you can shred a small amount of a brown color block.

Well, this coffee scent will have that note.  Although, if you are looking for a coffee scent without the chocolate note, keep reading.

Coffee Scents:  Fresh Brewed Coffee Soap

Coffee Scents:  Mountain Hazelnut Cafe Candle

A candle scented with Mountain Hazelnut Cafe fragrance oil would look fabulous colored in a light coffee colored candle. We suggest using three drops of brown liquid candle dye along with a drop orange, and a drop of yellow dye.  This suggestion is based on four pounds of candle wax. You can also use a small amount of a brown, orange, and yellow shredded color blocks shredded.

What are the ingredients for soap making?

What are the ingredients for soap making? What are the ingredients for soap making?

Here at Natures Garden, we are often asked, “What are the ingredients for soap making?”.  We know it can be overwhelming at first.  Whether you have never made soap before or transitioning from creating melt and pour soap to taking on cold process soap.  Anything new can be a challenge at first and we are here to help you along the way.  Below, we will go through what ingredients and supplies are needed for each type of soap

What are the ingredients for soap making?: Melt and Pour Soap

First, we will talk about melt and pour soap.  This is a basic soap making method.  When using melt and pour soap, the saponification process is already done for you.  Natures Garden carries two pound slabs in several varieties.  Each slab is easy to cut and easy to use.

Melt and Pour Soap: Types of Melt and Pour Soap Bases

Goat’s Milk
Yogurt
Cocoa Butter
Oatmeal
Soya Milk
Shea Butter
Hemp Oil
Honey
Mango
Diamond Clear
SLS Free Clear Glycerin

Melt and Pour Soap: Melting the Soap

So, melt and pour soap, or mp soap will first need to be cut.  We cut the soap into small pieces prior to adding it to a bowl and melting it.  This will allow the soap to melt evenly.  Melt and pour soap can be melted in a microwave oven or in a double boiler.  So, you will need to either have a microwave or a double boiler to make melt and pour soap.  You will also need a cutting board, knife, and at least one mixing bowl.  Once melted, it is ready to be scented and colored.

Melt and Pour Soap: Adding Color

While you can simply melt the soap and pour it into a mold, many choose to add color.  There are a few ways you can color your handmade soap.  Which colorant you choose is a personal choice.  Once your soap is melted, you simply add the color and stir.  Read below for more information on a couple of the types of colorants that you can use.

Adding Color: FUN Soap Colorants

First, Natures Garden’s FUN Soap Colorants can be used.  These colorants are pigments dispersed in vegetable glycerin.  These colorants will give you a nice vibrant color in both clear soap bases and white soap bases.

Adding Color: Da Bomb Soap Dyes

Next, we will take a closer look at the Da Bomb Soap Dyes.  These handmade soap dyes are water based.  These soap colorants work wonderfully in melt and pour soap.  In a white base, they will give you a nice pastel-like color.  However, in a clear base, they are true to color and very bright.

Melt and Pour Soap: Scenting the Soap

You have a couple of options when scenting your soap.  The first choice is whether or not to scent your soap.  You can leave it unscented if you would like.  Although, you can also add a wonderful aroma to the soap.  This aroma can either come in the form of body safe fragrance oil or body safe essential oil.  Either way, you choose to go, the scent simply can be added to the melted soap and mixed right in.  You will find more details on scenting options below.

Scenting the Soap: Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural oils that are plant based.  Natures Garden carries pure essential oils that pure and unadulterated.  They are not diluted in any way.  This option is a perfect addition to your handmade soaps.  While essential oils will be single note scents, you can always create your own blend by mixing them together.  This will make the scent a little more complex.

Melt and Pour Soap: Choosing a mold

Once you have melted, scented and colored your soap, you will simply need to pour it into the mold and allow it to setup.  It is just that simple.  Let’s look at some of your mold options in a little more detail.

Choosing a Mold: Embed Molds

Embed molds will be smaller molds just like the molds that you would use when making chocolate candies.  They are the perfect size for creating guest soaps.  They are also the perfect size to use for embeds or even to top a soap loaf.

Choosing a Mold: Silicone Molds

Silicone molds are really easy to work with.  Since they are super flexible, removing the soap from the mold is a breeze.  They are durable and withstand high heat.

Choosing a Mold: Mold Market Molds

Natures Garden also carries Mold Market Molds.  These molds are made of a heavy duty plastic.  So, they will hold up pretty well.  They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and will help you create some unique handmade soap.

Melt and Pour Soap: Additional Options

When it comes to melt and pour soap, we have technically answered the question, “What are the ingredients for soap making?”.  However, there are a few additional options that you may like to know about.

First, let’s talk about rubbing alcohol.  This can be a melt and pour soap maker’s best friend.  Rubbing alcohol can be sprayed on melt and pour soap to release air bubbles once it is poured into the mold.  It can also be sprayed in between layers of soap to help them adhere to each other.

Next, herbs and clays can be added to soap.  These can be powdered or cut.  While herbs will oxidize over time, each herb will bring a different benefit to your soap.  The powdered herbs can be mixed with vegetable glycerin before being added to your soap.  Many will often use the powdered herbs or clays not only for the benefits of the powder but also as a natural colorant.  The cut herbs are often used not only for the benefits the herbs possess, but also for exfoliation or to add decorative touches.

What are the ingredients for soap making?: Cold Process Soap

Cold process soap is a method in which you are starting completely from scratch.  If you are new to making soap from scratch, you will want to read our soap making safety class.  This will walk you through the basics, as well as safety precautions.   You will also want to read over our beginner’s soap making class, Cold Process Soap Class 101.  You always want to wear safety gear and have vinegar close by when making soap from scratch.  So, now that you have read about soap making safety and read our soap making 101 class, let’s look at the ingredients and supplies needed.

Cold Process Soap: Supplies

While there are several ingredients needed for cold process soap making, you will also need supplies and safety gear.  So, below, is a list of supplies you will need for cold process soap making.  However, you want these supplies to be dedicated only to soap making.  You never want to use any of these supplies to come into contact with your food once they have been used for soap making.

Safety Gloves
Plastic Safety Goggles
Digital Scale
Stick Blender
Stainless Steel Stock Pot or Bowl
Small container or bowl to mix colorants
Long handled plastic spoon or spatula
Mixing bowls (dishwasher safe so you know it withstands heat)
A kitchen thermometer
Freezer Paper (used to line molds and protect your work surface)
Paper towels (to clean up small spills)
Bottle of Vinegar (used in case of lye or raw soap coming in contact with skin)
Soap Mold

Cold Process Soap: Ingredients

Next, let’s talk about the actual ingredients used for cold process soap making.  Cold process soap is created using lye, water, and a combination of oils.  However, it really isn’t as simple as throwing it all together and hoping for the best.  First, you will prepare a lye solution.  Separately, you will prepare your oils.  Then, wait for them to come to the correct temperature before combining them.  Finally, you will begin pouring the batter into a mold.  Once it has setup up, after 24-48 hours, it can be removed from the mold.  It is then allowed to cure before using. Let’s look a little closer at each of these below, as each phase has to be done in a certain manner.

Ingredients: Lye Solution

In order to create a lye solution, there are two ingredients you will need.  You will need distilled water and lye.  Lye is also known as sodium hydroxide.  The water is first weighed out.  Then, the weighed our lye is added to the water.  It is important that the water is never added to the lye.  You always want to add the lye to the water.  If you do it the other way around, it can create a volcanic effect.  The lye is added slowly, stirring as it is added.  Then, the lye solution is set aside so that it can cool.

Ingredients: Soaping Oils

Next, you will need soaping oils.  However, the combination of oils you use is extremely important.  Each oil will saponify a certain amount of lye.  If you use the wrong combination of oils, you could end up with a lye heavy bar of soap.  So, before creating your soap and choosing your oils, you will need to determine your recipe.  You can use one of Natures Garden’s soap making recipes, or create your own.  However, if you choose to create your own, make sure you run the recipe through a soap calculator to make sure that the recipe will work.  We recommend using soapcalc.  You should know that some oils will create a harder bar, others softer.  In addition, some oils will slow trace, others will speed up trace.

Once you choose and weigh out your oils, you melt them and allow them to cool a bit.  You can melt the oils using a double boiler.  We recommend allowing both your lye solution and soap oils to come to around 100 degrees Fahrenheit before combining them.

Ingredients: Scenting the Soap

You can also choose to scent your soap with either a body safe fragrance oils or essential oil.  However, the scent you choose can affect your soap batter.  So, we have created videos to show you exactly how each of Natures Garden’s fragrance oils will perform in cold process soap.  In addition, you can find our most popular cp soap scents here.  You can also use essential oils in your soap.

Ingredients: Coloring the Soap

When it comes to coloring your soap, we recommend using the FUN Soap Colorants.  These colorants will come through beautifully in cold process soap.  We have also created videos showing you the range of shades you can get with the FUN Soap Colorants.  While we talked about the Da Bomb Soap Dyes for melt and pour soap, we don’t recommend them for cp soap.  While, yes, they are safe to use in any type of soap, they will morph, or change color during the saponification process.  During saponification, the cp soap batter reaches high temperatures and the Da Bomb Dyes will not stay true to color.

Ingredients: Choosing a Mold

You have a few options when it comes to a soap mold.  I like silicone molds.  They are easy to work with and hold up extremely well to the high temperatures of the saponification process.  Also, the soap comes out of the molds very easily.  However, you can also use a wooden mold.  In addition, some heavier plastic molds will work.  Although this isn’t true of all plastic molds, they must be able to withstand the high temperatures.

What are the ingredients for soap making?: Hot Process Soap

The last method we will talk about is hot process soap, also known as hp soap.  This method is also done from scratch.  The same safety precautions taken when making cold process soap should be taken when creating hp soap.  So, make sure you read both the cold process 101 class and the safety precautions I linked to above in the cold process section.

So, what is the difference?  Hot process soap can be created using a crockpot.  Of course, this would need to be a crockpot used only for soapmaking, not food once it used for soap.  Crockpot soap will not have as long of a cure time as cold process soap.  This is because the heat from the crockpot speeds up the saponification process.  However, the same recipes, fragrance oils, molds, and colorants can be used.

What are the ingredients for soap making?:  Additional Ingredients

There are a few ingredients that can be used in any type of soap.  First, Vanilla White Color Stabilizer.  This ingredient will lessen the discoloration that can be caused by vanillin that is in some fragrance oils.  Sodium lactate is often used in various soap making methods as well.  It is a natural moisturizer that will help harden the soap.  Sodium lactate is used in both cold process and hot process soap.  We also talked earlier about herbs and clay in melt and pour soap.  They can also be used when making soap from scratch.

If you have a sensitivity to products that contain a lot of chemicals or fragrances, this is a good, natural alternative to lotion or body cream and of course, it’s perfect for hydrating that itchy, dry skin. Coconut Soap Recipes: Which Coconut Oil do I use?Coconut Soap Recipes: Which Coconut Oil do I use?

As you may know, there are two types of coconut oil. Nature’s Garden offers Coconut Oil-76 and Fractionated Coconut Oil. Both work equally well in all bath and body products. You may notice that fractionated coconut oil does not solidify like regular coconut oil-76 does. That is because the fatty triglycerides from the oil have been removed and what is left is the clear, liquid form of the coconut oil. This type of coconut oil is perfect for using in massage oils, as a carrier oil for lip gloss or essential oils. Any time you want your product to stay at as a liquid, fractionated coconut oil is the perfect answer.

Coconut Oil-76 is a solid form of and only turns liquid in temperatures of 76 degrees Fahrenheit or above. Coconut oil is popular in any type of soap making, bath and body products and even in cooking. It is also very obtainable in grocery stores, soap making supply stores and at any type of big box store. It also very affordable, which makes it perfect for making soap. Both types of coconut oil will give your soap a wonderful, bubbly lather and can also contribute to making your soap hard and white. Coconut Oil-76 is perfect for any type of cosmetic product or bath and body product, such as a body scrub, that you want to have a solid form to.

Popular Christmas Fragrances: Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins Fragrance OilPopular Christmas Fragrances: Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins Fragrance Oil

What in the world is a Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins? This fragrance oil by Natures Garden was inspired by one of our favorite movies of all times – “ELF”.  At one point in the movie, Buddy mentions that he feels like a “Cotton headed ninny muggin”; AKA…an ELF Airhead.  This made us think, “What would a cotton headed ninny muggin smell like?”  Cotton headed ninny muggin fragrance oil begins with sweet, buttery, creamy coconut and vanilla frosting; leading to middle notes of powdery heliotrope and spicy hints; and sits on a powerful vanilla base. A very yummy smelling cotton head you will be!

Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins worked perfectly in our cold process soap testing! With no ricing, accelerating, separating, it soaped beautifully. However, it does discolor to a chocolate brown. Our Scented Play Dough recipe is made with five different colors and five different Christmas fragrances, one being Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins!
