Since this spice is a blend of various herbs, there are many plants that were needed to create this herb wholesale. The essential herbs and spices that are used to create Apple Pie Spice are cinnamon, lemon peel, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. A few of these ingredients can be grown in an herb garden, but many of the spices will become trees. So, most of these spices require more space and effort than other types of herbs. But, we can still discuss how they are grown and harvested.

Apple Pie Spice Uses: Where Do Spices Come From?

First, we have the cinnamon herb, which comes from the bark of the laurel tree. This process is a bit complicated, but it begins by growing the tree for two years. After, the tree is cut down and the following year little shoots will appear. These shoots will have a thin layer of bark on the inside. This bark is collected, dried, and used as the spice we all know and love.

Second, we have lemon peel powder. These lemons grow on trees in warm, full sun conditions. Once the tree is about three years old, it will begin to produce fruit. These fruits are harvested once they are yellow and firm with a slightly glossy appearance. Then, the skin of these fruits will be dried and ground to be used for lemon peel powder.

Next, ginger is a root that can be grown using roots that have visible green “eyes”. These “eyes” will sprout long stems and below the dirt, the root will grow larger. This plant prefers nutrient rich soil that can hold moisture. However, the set up needs to be free draining to prevent over saturating the plant. About eight months after planting, you can dig up the ginger root.

Additionally, cloves are dried flowers that grow on clove trees. These trees prefer a wet, tropical climate and can’t survive below fifty-nine degrees Fahrenheit. These flowers are picked before they have the chance to open. Then, they are sun dried for about five days.

Finally, nutmeg is produced from a nutmeg tree, which creates yellow fruits that are similar to apricots. Inside the fruit are purple/brown seeds that are covered in a red skin. The skin, which is used to make mace, is removed and the seed can be ground into nutmeg.

Further, this herbal grass could benefit from nitrogen fertilization. While salty soils are tolerated well, a pH below 5 won’t be tolerated and can prevent healthy growth. Since this nutritious grass would make a perfect addition to health food, it could be useful to grow it at home. This way you’ll have a fresh supply! It is suggested that you soak your seeds in water for 8-12 hours. Then, rinse your seeds and change the water to soak again for 8-12 hours. You will need to repeat this last step about 4-5 times until they sprout tiny roots. You can use a bowl of water or you can use a Sprouter to soak the seeds. After, you can evenly spread your sprouts in a moist medium. Also, it is okay to slightly overlap your seeds to increase density of your barley grass. After, cover the top of your tray with an upside down tray to minimize light. You will need to lightly water once or twice a day to ensure that the roots bury themselves.

After, the sprouts get a bit older you can remove the cover. But, make sure to keep the soil moist and make sure that the water can drain. Also, direct sunlight would be a good idea for nice, healthy plant growth. Once your grass is about six or so inches tall, you can harvest your grass. Although you can technically harvest earlier if you are ready to use the barley grass, the timing is all about your yield. But, remember that most of the grass’s nutrients occurs in the young sprouts. So, you will want to harvest before they grow too big. Olive trees are most common around the Mediterranean area. So, these plants are accustomed to hot, dry summers and very mild winters. If your region has harsh winter conditions, then you will want to bring your plant indoors for the winter. Also, you will want to make sure that your tree is able to receive direct sunlight for as long as possible and needs a minimum of about six hours per day. So, you may want to consider moving your indoor plant outside during the summer months. Also, the soil needs to be well draining, but it shouldn’t have an abundance of sand nor clay. Also, you may want to do some pruning to promote your tree’s effectiveness. During your tree’s first four years of their life, you will want to prune your tree to open it up more to the sun. You will love all the ways that you can use this bright citrus herb in your life. Lemon Peel Benefits: Growing ConditionsLemon Peel Benefits: Growing Conditions

Lemon trees require a warm climate and are quite sensitive to the cold. The tree will become inactive below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the fruit dies after being exposed to lower than 28 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes. So, they will need protection from frost, which can be helped by ensuring that your tree has enough water. Additionally, lemon trees should be provided with full sunlight. While these trees are temperature sensitive, they are able to tolerate many different types of soils. However, these trees will prefer soil that is slightly acidic and well-draining. Further, you should plant your tree in a hole that is slightly shorter than the root ball. Then, replace the dirt and tamp firmly.

For those in the United States, anyone that doesn’t live in a climate like Florida or California may want to plant your lemon tree indoors. As long as the pot is fairly large and the soil is well draining, the tree should be comfortable as an indoor plant. However, a typical lemon tree has the potential to grow to be 20 feet tall, so you will likely want to prune your tree as it gets too large.

However, the lemons require hot summers to develop the fruit. So, it may be less likely for an indoor tree to produce fruit if you don’t bring your plant outside in the summer. Luckily, there are dwarf lemon tree options, like the Meyer lemon, that are more likely to bear fruit. Since your plant will be inside, it is unlikely that pollinators, like bees, butterflies, and other bugs, can get to your plant. Instead, you can use a paintbrush or cotton swab to rub pollen within the flower. This increase your chance of fruit and lead to a better harvest.

If you want to grow an orange tree, then you will want to learn a bit about how to care for them. First, you may want to consider getting a tree from a nursery rather than starting from scratch. If you start from a seed, it can take the tree up to 15 years to produce any fruit. Instead, gardeners will employ a grafting technique that will take from a grown tree, so you won’t have to wait as long for your fruit. Also, an orange tree needs full sun and prefers subtropical climates. In the US this tree thrives in zones 9-11, which you can find on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Additionally, these plants enjoy soil that drains, but holds moisture. So, a deep and loamy soil with a pH around 6 or 7 would be best for your orange tree.

Once your tree has been planted, you will want to water thoroughly to prevent your tree from drying out. After a few weeks to about a month, you can begin to slowly decrease the amount of watering to once a week. Just make sure that you water very regularly in the spring to support your tree’s growth and avoid the possibility of the root ball drying out. Generally, it is thought that growing orange trees need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. Additionally, you won’t need to prune your tree too much. Just rid yourself of any dead branches or any branches that are too close to the ground.

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk? What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?

What is cornsilk? The cornsilk is the shiny fibers between the husk and the corn cob. These fibers are long, stringy and hard to miss. If you are shucking the corn yourself, then you can see the silk poking out of the top and all along the inside of the cob. While it’s typically taken off the corn cob before it is cooked, it doesn’t mean that it is bad for us. Most people just don’t like the strings getting stuck in their teeth, but there are better ways of benefiting from this skin loving herb. So, let’s get to the really important question of, “What are the benefits of cornsilk powder? There are many unique benefits for adding this herb to your homemade bath and body creations. Plus, there are natural medicinal remedies that incorporate this herb. So, there many great properties of this powdered herb to talk about!

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Growing ConditionsWhat are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Growing Conditions

Around here we are no stranger to corn or cornsilk. But, that no surprise as this American staple is perfectly fit for our summer months. Corn stalks love long summer days full of bright sunshine. Also, they need soil slightly acidic and full of nutrients like nitrogen. If the soil is nutrient poor, then you likely will begin to see yellowing leaves. Plus, they need moist soil that is well draining as their roots are close to the surface. Another thing to know about corn is that they use the wind to spread their pollen. So, they should be planted in blocks of at least four rows instead of one long row. This will increase the likelihood of your corn being pollinated and growing correctly.

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Why Do Farmers Leave Corn in the Field? What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Why Do Farmers Leave Corn in the Field?

Another interesting aspect of corn farming is the timing of harvesting. There are three phases of the corn. First, is the milk stage where the fluid inside the corn is similar to milk in consistency. Next, is the dough phase where the kernel gets more solid. Finally, you have the driest stage that is referred to as the black layer stage, as the tip of the corn is black. While the corn could be harvested at this point, waiting a bit longer will help cut down on the drying costs.

If the corn isn’t harvested when it is as dry as possible, then the farmer will need to dry it themselves and that costs money. This drying makes it easier to store the corn for the right time to sell. Also, drying helps make sure the corn stays good through the transportation process. So, transportation can effectively get the corn to where it will be used. So, you will often see what looks like dead corn left drying in the fields before it is time to harvest. However, farmers are actually just about ready to harvest these crops. The only concern is that they are more likely to fall on from the plant before harvesting at this point, especially due to a storm or strong breeze.

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Food and BeveragesWhat are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Food and Beverages

While the cornsilk isn’t necessarily used for making food, the corn that it grows on makes up for it! In fact, corn makes up a huge part of what we have on our grocery store shelves. Most often, you probably think of the corn that you eat as some delicious sweet corn. Also, you may even think of scrumptious, homemade corn bread. While these definitely count, that is hardly all corn that is used for our food.

First, modified corn sweetener and high fructose corn syrup are both created using corn to create alternative sweeteners. These corn sweeteners are used in things like soda pop and fruit juices as well as ketchup, breads, yogurts and much more. While corn has a lot of nutritional benefits, some people are concerned about this modified sweetener being added so much of our food that it causes weight gain. Second, there is corn that is used to feed livestock, like cows and chickens. Additionally, processed meats, like chicken nuggets and cheap hamburger patties, often use corn filler to stretch the meat as far as it will go. So, much of the meat that we eat relies on corn, too. It can be hard to go a day without eating or eating something that benefited from the use of corn!

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Medicinal

There are many reasons why cornsilk is used in natural home remedies. In fact, Native Americans have used this herb in natural remedies for centuries. Plus, this botanical herb contains vitamins, minerals, fiber, and natural chemicals that continue to make this herb useful in many herbal recipes. While many of these medicinal benefits haven’t been confirmed within the medical community, it is a natural remedy that is sworn to have been helpful for many people.

Most people will create an herbal tea using the corn silk to harness the potential benefits. First, many people will ingest cornsilk powder to help with a variety of urinary issues. These issues include; inflammation in the urinary tract, kidney stones, prostate inflammation, or even bed wetting. Many find cornslik useful for these issues. This is because cornsilk contains chemicals that are known to work similarly to diuretics. Plus, cornsilk has been thought to reduce inflammation. Also, there is some that believe that cornsilk is useful for reducing blood pressure along with cholesterol levels.

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Are There Any Side Effects?

People generally believed that cornsilk is safe for most of the population. But, anyone with a corn allergy, low potassium levels, or diabetes shouldn’t take this herbal supplement. You may want to check out the Interactions section of WebMD’s cornsilk page if you are taking any long term medications. For instance, anyone taking a diuretic should be cautious as cornsilk is known to work similarly to the drug. Also, those that are pregnant or breast feeding should use this herb with caution as amounts higher than those normally found in food can lead to potential issues.

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Other UsesWhat are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Other Uses

Not only does this herb have benefits for humans, but many pet owners use this herb for their animals. Just like with humans, this natural remedy can be useful for reducing issues with the urinary tract. It is suggested that a fourth cup of tea is used for every twenty pounds your animal weighs, which can be done twice a day. You will want to check with your vet to determine whether your pet’s particular illness isn’t more serious. Also, this remedy isn’t recommended for pregnant animals.

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Using Cornsilk in a Cold Process Soap Recipe

Since cornsilk is so beneficial for the skin and soap, we wanted to find a great soap recipe to share. The Corn Silk – What Does it Have to Offer? by Neecy’s Necessities talks about how to include cornsilk in a typical batch of soap. So, you can use your own favorite recipe for soap making. While this recipe asks you to grind fresh corn silk into a powder, it may be easier to use our cornsilk powder to create this soap. Grinding fresh silk takes much more time, effort, and quite a few fibers.

What are the Benefits of Cornsilk?: Using Corn for Predicting the Weather

Sometimes animals and plants pick up on the subtle hints that nature provides before we ever could. In this case, plants and animals seem to notice cues that tell them to get prepared for an especially bad winter. So, these organisms will make special preparations that they wouldn’t ordinarily do. While we don’t have enhanced senses, we can pay attention to these organisms to determine whether they think a harsh winter is coming.

One plant that we can pay attention to for signals is corn. According to folklore, corn becomes harder and the husks tighten around the cob when a bad winter is approaching. Since the corn is used to the warm summer weather, a subtle, cold temperature change would lead the corn to want to help protect itself from a harsh winter. If you are curious about more ways to use nature to predict the kind of winter that is to come, then check out Signs of Winter Weather: 14 Folklore Predictions by Momtastic.
