Soap Making Preparations

Prior to begin the Rosewood and Musk CP Soap Project, you will want to prepare your work area.  First get all of your utensils, soap making supplies, and soap making ingredients ready and in your clean and clutter-free work area.  Then, fill a bottle with vinegar.  The vinegar can be used during soap making and clean up to neutralize lye.  If you have not made cold process soap before, you will want to learn about the process and safety precautions that should be taken during the soap making process.  So, click here for Natures Garden’s Basic CP Soap Making Class. Also, you will need to become familiar with our Soap Making Safety Class.

At this time, you should prepare your lye solution.  So, weigh out your distilled water.  Next, add the lye to the water slowly.  Stir as you add the lye.  Allow the lye solution to cool to room temperature.  Then, add the sodium lactate.  Sodium lactate will help harden the bars of soap.  This will also help when it comes time to remove your soap from the mold.  However, the sodium lactate is optional.

It will take some time for the lye solution to come to room temperature.  However, you can go ahead and weigh out your soaping oils while you are waiting.  Once you have weighed out your soaping oils, it is time to melt them.  Once the oils are melted, you will also need to wait for your oils to come to room temperature.

Prepare the Colorants
Prepare the Colorants

So, now that you have both your lye solution and soaping oils cooling, you can prepare your soap colorants.  For this recipe, we will need three colorants in total, pink, brown, and white.  We will prepare the white and the brown colorants at this time.

Prepare the Brown ColorantPrepare the Brown Colorant

In order to create a brown color in our cold process soap, we will use cocoa powder.  So, weigh out your cocoa powder in a small dish.  Then, add a small amount of your soaping oils and mix.  It is okay if the oils are still warm when they are added to the cocoa powder.  By dispersing the cocoa powder in the soaping oils prior to adding them, they will mix more easily and evenly when we add it to the soap batter.

Prepare the White ColorantPrepare the White Colorant

Next, we will create a white colorant for our soap batter using Titanium Dioxide.  So, go ahead and weigh out your titanium dioxide in a small bowl.  We will then, once again, add a small amount of the soaping oils to the powder.  Once you have created both colorants, simply place them to the side until they are needed.

Prepare the Rosewood Musk Fragrance Oil

At this time, we will prepare the Rosewood Musk Fragrance Oil.  Weigh out the fragrance oil in a small bowl.  Then, place it of to the side where it will be undisturbed until we need it.

Rosewood Musk Fragrance OilWhat Does Rosewood Musk Fragrance Oil Smell Like?

Rosewood Musk Fragrance Oil by Natures Garden Candle and Soap Making Supplies is the aroma of fresh cut rosewood and warm musk that blend together to create a clean, peppery scent.  The aroma begins with top notes of bergamot, tea, orange, and lemon.  Then, at the heart of rosewood musk, you will find middle notes of pepper and ginger.  This musk scent finishes with lingering notes of guicawood, vetiver, rosewood, and cedarwood.

Now, once your soaping oils as well as the lye solution are at room temperature, they are ready to be combined.  So, add the lye solution to the bowl containing the soaping oils.  Next, use your stick blender to blend the soap batter.

Once your soap batter is emulsified, it is time to add the fragrance oil.  So, add the Rosewood Musk Fragrance Oil.  Then, once again, use the stick blender to incorporate the scent.

Now, it is time to separate your soap batter.  So, simply divide the soap batter equally into three bowls.

Next, add one of your colorants to each bowl.  So, one bowl should be colored with the pink colorant.  Add the pink colorant to this bowl.  Then, add the cocoa powder colorant to the second bowl.  Finally, add the titanium dioxide to the last bowl.  Lastly, use your stick blender to the blend the contents of each bowl to incorporate the colorants.  You will want to begin with the white soap batter.  Then, move to the pink soap batter.  Finally, stick blend the brown soap batter.  This will allow you to blend the contents of each bowl without needing to clean the stick blender in between mixing.

Before we begin pouring the soap, we would like to mention that about half of the white soap batter should be kept to top the soap loaf once it is poured.  So, starting with an empty bowl, begin pouring small amounts of each color of the soap batter. You will need to pour all of the colors in small increments. Keep pouring small amounts of the pink, brown, and some white soap batter until you have used all of the pink and brown soap batter and about half of the white soap batter.  Then, allow the remaining white batter aside to thicken a bit.  You can set this portion aside for the moment.

For the moment we will focus on the brown, pink, and white bowl of soap batter.  So, place this bowl in front of you.  Next, you will need a rubber spatula.  Place the rubber spatula in the bowl. Then, slowly move the spatula in a circular motion around the bowl until you are happy with your swirls.

Finally, it is time to pour the soap batter into two cavities of the 4-loaf silicone mold.  So, divide the soap batter equally between the two cavities in the silicone soap mold.  Gently, tap the soap mold on the counter to release any air bubbles that may have formed.

Topping the Rosewood and Musk CP Soap

Next, we will begin topping our soap.  So, for this step, you will need the remaining white soap batter that you set aside.  It needs to be at a thick frosting-like consistency. Now, once the white soap batter is at this consistency, place the it on top of each loaf.  Create peaks in the white topping.

At this time, we will add a rose petal finishing touch!  Lightly sprinkle the top of each loaf with the pink rose petals.  You can use as little or as much as you would like.  We used less than a gram total for both loaves when creating ours.
