Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Let’s Talk About the Ingredients We Are Using

Before we begin creating this recipe, let’s talk about some of the Natures Garden ingredients we are using.  Below, we will talk a little bit about our wax selection, molds, and fragrance oils used in our Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Natures Garden Snickerdoodle Cookies Fragrance OilChristmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Natures Garden Snickerdoodle Cookies Fragrance Oil

Snickerdoodle cookies are a holiday tradition in my house.  So, trust me when I say that this cookie fragrance oil smells just like the freshly baked cookies!  This fragrance oil by Natures Garden is the fresh baked aroma of French vanilla with a touch of cinnamon sticks, gingerbread, and maple syrup.  In fact, one of our customers had this to say about Snickerdoodle Cookies Fragrance Oil, “This is the strongest snickerdoodle scent I have ever used. It is perfect for my soy wax tarts. I highly recommend this cookie fragrance oil.”

We brew this fragrance oil to perfection just for you!  We were not surprised when one client said this about French Vanilla Coffee Fragrance Oil, “Not an over strong smell of coffee, just the right amount with a touch of vanilla. Will be getting this one again, and again. Favorite with tart ‘melts’, throws very well. Not overpowering, just right….thanks for this one.”

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Natures Garden Pillar of Bliss WaxChristmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Natures Garden Pillar of Bliss Wax

I would like to take a moment to talk about the wax that we will be using today.  We are often asked by our client some of the differences in the waxes that we carry.  Today, I will tell you a little bit about our Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax.  This particular wax is used when creating melts that will be used in your burner, or for pillars and votive candles.

Natures Garden Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax is soy wax and paraffin wax blend.  While many people love natural soy waxes, it can sometimes be difficult to work with.  So, this wax is like the best of both worlds.  Straight soy wax can have a rough finish and naturally frost.  In addition, it can sometimes be difficult to get the absolute best hot scent throw.  Well, this pillar wax also contains paraffin wax.  The benefit of paraffin wax is that it helps give a wonderful scent throw.  Additionally, it gives the wax a nice and smooth creamy finish.

Often we are asked for recommendations on wax for wax tarts.  Well, the Pillar of Bliss wax is the one that I personally use.  Since it is a pillar wax, it will pop out of your molds very nicely.  When you use a container wax for tarts it doesn’t come out of the jars as easily.  This is because container waxes are meant to be softer so that they cling easily to your candle jars, but will do the same when used in candle molds.  So, it can be difficult to remove container waxes from molds.  My personal rule of thumb, if it is going into a mold or clamshell, use a pillar wax.  In addition, the Pillar of Bliss Wax comes in a granulated form, making it very easy to work with.  Finally, it has an amazing scent throw and a nice creamy finish.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Silicone Mini Muffins MoldsChristmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Silicone Mini Muffins Molds

I absolutely love working with silicone molds.  They are durable and make removing the wax melts a breeze.  In addition, they are actually made for baking so they can handle the heat of the hot candle wax.  Some plastic molds can be a little more difficult to work with, requiring you to pour at a much lower temperature. If you haven’t tried working with silicone molds yet, I highly recommend them.  I love them for candle making, soap making, and cosmetic making.  Now, this candle making recipe will create 24 wax melts for your burner.  You will need a total of two of the mini muffin silicone molds for the Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Preparations

Now, that we have talked about some of the ingredients we are using, let’s begin.  First, prepare your work area.  You want to make sure you have a clear and also clean area to work in.  Then, you are ready to begin preparing your handmade coffee wax tarts.

We begin by preparing the Pillar of Bliss Wax for the bottom snickerdoodle layer. We will use a double boiler to melt the candle wax.  You will need to put a few inches of water in your pot. Turn your stove top on to heat the water.  Next, weigh out 345 grams of the pillar wax using your pouring pot.  Then, place your pouring pot inside the warmed water.  Finally, melt the candle wax to 195 degrees.

Next, we will color the wax for the bottom snickerdoodle layer.  You want to color your wax melts at the temperature of 195 degrees Fahrenheit. We will be using two liquid candle dyes, both Natures Garden Spectrum brown and black liquid candle dyes.

To your melted candle wax, add 2 drops of black liquid candle colorant and 3 drops of the brown liquid candle dye.  Then, mix to fully disperse the color.  Once you have finished you will need to wait for the temperature of your candle wax to drop to 185 degrees Fahrenheit before moving on.

Next, we will be adding the Snickerdoodle Fragrance Oil to the bottom layer of wax.  For this recipe, we will be using 41 grams of Natures Garden’s Snickerdoodle Fragrance Oil.  So, when your wax is at 185 degrees Fahrenheit, go ahead and add the Snickerdoodle scent.  Then, mix with a mixing spoon to completely blend the fragrance oil with the candle wax.  You want to stir for about 30 seconds.

Now, we will be pouring the bottom snickerdoodle layer of wax.  Before pouring, allow the temperature of the candle wax to drop to about 175 degrees Fahrenheit.  Once the Pillar of Bliss is at the proper temperature, fill the 24 cavities of your silicone mini muffin mold about 3/4 of the way full.  Finally, allow this layer to fully setup before beginning the next layer.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Prepare the Top Layer of the Wax Melts

The top layer of your wax tarts will be left uncolored.  However, it will be scented with French Vanilla Coffee Fragrance Oil.  So, we will begin preparing this layer of your wax melt.  You will pour this layer directly on top of the brown layer of your melt in your mini muffins silicone mold ready.  It will be the top white layer of your wax melts.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Preparing the Pillar of Bliss Wax for the Top French Vanilla LayerChristmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Preparing the Pillar of Bliss Wax for the Top French Vanilla Layer

We begin by Preparing the Pillar of Bliss Wax for the top vanilla coffee layer. We will use a double boiler to melt the candle wax.  Again, you will need to put a few inches of water in your pot. Turn your stove top on to heat the water.  Next, weigh out 258 grams of the pillar wax using your pouring pot.  Then, place your pouring pot inside the warmed water.  Finally, melt the candle wax to 185 degrees.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Adding the French Vanilla Coffee Fragrance Oil to the Top Layer of WaxChristmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Adding the French Vanilla Coffee Fragrance Oil to the Top Layer of Wax

Next, we will be adding the French Vanilla Coffee Fragrance Oil to the Top layer of wax.  For this recipe, we will be using 34 grams of Natures Garden’s French Vanilla Coffee Fragrance Oil.  So, when your wax is at 185 degrees Fahrenheit, go ahead and add the French Vanilla Coffee scent.  Then, mix with a mixing spoon to completely blend the fragrance oil with the candle wax.  You want to stir for about 30 seconds.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Pouring the Top French Vanilla Coffee Layer of Wax

Now, we will be pouring the top French vanilla coffee layer of wax.  Before pouring the candle wax, allow the temperature of the candle wax to drop to about 150 degrees Fahrenheit this time.  By pouring at a lower temperature, the heated wax will not melt the previous layer.  Once the pillar of bliss is at the proper temperature, fill each of the 24 cavities of your silicone mini muffin mold the rest of the way.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Adding the Fresh Coffee BeansChristmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Adding the Fresh Coffee Beans

Finally, you will be adding a decorative touch to your wax melts.  This will be in the form of fresh whole coffee beans.  You will need to quickly add the coffee beans to the top of your wax melts.  We used about seven or eight beans for each wax melt.  You will want to do this as soon as you pour your last tart.  So, after you have poured your white layer, begin adding the coffee beans.  Once you have added coffee beans to each melt, simply allow your melts to setup.

Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts Recipe: Adding the Fresh Coffee BeansOnce your Christmas Coffee Wax Tarts have setup make sure you allow them to cure for a few days before using them.  Finally, after your wax melts have cured, they are ready to use.  To use your wax tarts, simply place one in your wax burner and enjoy the wonderful holiday coffee aroma.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Clean and Prepare Work Station

Before you get started on this recipe, you should clean and prepare the area that you are going to be working in. This will prevent any specs of dirt from accidentally getting into the recipe and it will make the entire process more enjoyable for you. First, cleaning and sanitizing the equipment you need and tidying the work space will keep your projects clean and beautiful. Nothing is worse than finding a spec in your design that you didn’t catch before your wax cooled. Plus, having everything ready to go will make your experience more enjoyable and stress-free! This way you can just focus on the fun of crafting.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Creating the Double Boiler

A double boiler is the perfect way to gently heat your ingredients and this method will minimize the risk of scorching your wax. If you don’t know how to create a double boiler, then we will walk you through the simple steps! Since you are melting wax, you can use the pouring pot to hold your melting ingredients. Then, you will want to have a larger pot that the pouring pot can easily fit into with extra room on the sides. Next, add enough water to the larger pot that it touches the pouring pot, but won’t boil over. After, place the pouring pot into the larger pot. Then, add the larger pot to the stove and boil the water.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe Measure the Necessary HerbsRustic Wax Melts Recipe: Measure the Necessary Herbs

First, you are going to want to prepare the various herbs that this recipe will need. These herbs are perfect for adding to the appearance of these melts. You are going to be working with four different herbs in this recipe.  Not only will you need to prepare a mixture of herbs for the middle of the melts, but you will need to get the cinnamon sticks ready for the top of the melts. So, the two herb preparations will be needed at different steps in the process.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Prepare the Herb Mixture

You will need to prepare the mixture of herbs that will be added to the wax melts. So, take a bowl and the scale. Then, weigh out about an ounce of juniper berries, orange peel cut and sifted, and whole cloves each. After, mix these herbs together and set this bowl aside. Later, these herbs will be added to the mold cavities with the wax to create your homemade wax tarts.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Prepare the Cinnamon Sticks

Separate from the bowl of herbs, you are going to want to prepare the cinnamon sticks. You are going to need twenty-four pieces in total. However, you will be breaking each cinnamon stick into smaller bits, so you won’t need a whole lot. You can get about 2-3 pieces from each individual cinnamon stick. You should look at the size of the mold’s cavities and make sure your pieces are small enough to fit on top. Then, set these cinnamon stick pieces aside.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Melting the Candle WaxRustic Wax Melts Recipe: Melting the Candle Wax

Next, you are going to prepare the Pillar of Bliss Wax for these homemade rustic wax tarts. So, take the pouring pot and weigh out about 345 grams of the wax into it. After, you will need to melt the wax completely. So, create your double boiler and heat the pillar of bliss wax. You will want to set the heat to a make sure that the water is boiling. So, you won’t need to turn the stove temperature all the way up. Also, make sure that you stir the wax to help prevent burning.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe Adding in the Fragrance OilRustic Wax Melts Recipe: Adding in the Fragrance Oil

Once all of the wax melts, you can remove the pouring pot from the heat. Then, you will add a thermometer to the pouring pot. This is to make sure that the wax isn’t too hot when you add the fragrance oil. If it is too hot, then the wax could burn off notes of your fragrance oil. Obviously, you don’t want to ruin this delightful Christmas spice aroma. So, make sure the thermometer is at about 180 degrees Fahrenheit before you add the fragrance. After you reach the right temperature you can pour in 41 grams of the Christmas Wassail Fragrance Oil and stir the wax to incorporate the scented oil.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Adding the Herbs to the MoldRustic Wax Melts Recipe: Adding the Herbs to the Mold

Before you are able to pour your melted wax, you are going to add some herbs to the mold. So, you will need to retrieve the small bowl that contains the mixture of juniper berries, orange peel c/s, and whole clove. However, you will not need the cinnamon sticks quite yet. So, leave this fourth herb off to the side. Now add a bit of this mixed herb mixture into each of the twenty-four cavities. We will not need this herb mixture later, so be sure to use it all in this step. You can go back and fill in cavities that don’t have as much as others.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Pouring the WaxRustic Wax Melts Recipe: Pouring the Wax

Now, you are ready to pour the melted Pillar of Bliss Wax into the mold. So, grab your scented wax and begin pouring your wax over the herbs. You will want to fill each of the twenty-four cavities all of the way up. Be careful not to overflow, but you will want to move to the next step quickly. In the next step you will want the wax to still be liquid in the molds. So, try your best to move quickly on to the next step.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Adding the Cinnamon SticksRustic Wax Melts Recipe: Adding the Cinnamon Sticks

Now, you are going to add the pieces of cinnamon sticks to the top of the wax melts. You are going to want to move quickly before the tarts begin to set up. If not, you may not be able to get the cinnamon sticks to stay put. Also, we recommend sticking one portion of the herb into the wax melt and have the other part of the cinnamon stick poking out above the wax tart. This way the cinnamon stick can be seen from the top and adds to the rustic charm of this lovely recipe.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Removing from the MoldRustic Wax Melts Recipe: Removing from the Mold

As your pillar of bliss tarts begin to set up, you will start to see how each wax melt will look. While these tarts all include the same ingredients, each one is unique and special, like a snowflake. Once the wax cools completely the wax won’t be transparent anymore, so only the herbs on top will be seen. This will leave you with just a few of these herbs poking through. This is what gives this recipe the gorgeous rustic appearance. Finally, when the wax has completely solidified you are ready to pop the wax melts out of their molds.

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Curing Before Use

Although you may be anxious and excited to test out your finished product, those extra few days of curing is exactly what your wax tarts need to be at their best. You can technically use your creation immediately, as there is nothing wrong with them. However, the scent isn’t going to be right until it has a chance to cure! While your wax tarts are finished, you won’t get the absolute best results unless you give the product time to cure. It super easy to do and only takes a couple days. Just let your wax melts sit undisturbed as the fragrance oil settles in your creation. After, you will be so glad that you waited!

Rustic Wax Melts Recipe: Melted Snowman

One adorable thing that we noticed about this Christmas craft recipe is that it looks like a melted snowman! The cinnamon stick looks like a stick arm.
