Our Favorite Christmas Crafts: How To Have a Stress Free ChristmasOur Favorite Christmas Crafts: How To Have a Stress Free Christmas

Most of us in today’s world, have the idea that Christmas has to be picture perfect. We watch the movies on the Hallmark Channel and expect our Christmas to be just like on TV.

However, we don’t live our lives scripted. It’s always important to remember that the Christmas tree doesn’t have to look like Martha Stewart decorated it. Our Christmas cookies do not need to look like they came straight out of Bon Appetit magazine. Christmas is a beautiful time to simply spend with loved ones. Those will be the memories that your children can cherish and remember when they grow older. It’s not about how perfect the ornaments were hung on the tree. It’s about the memory you have of each ornament that you hang on those branches. It isn’t about how perfectly edged the icing was on the cookies. It’s about how awesome those cookies tasted no matter how much icing Junior glopped onto the snowman shaped cookie.

Enjoy your holidays! Take some shortcuts when it comes to having friends or family over. It’s okay to have something that’s not made from scratch! Homemade gifts don’t have to say you don’t have the funds to buy elaborate gifts. If you create things for certain people in mind, then you have given something to somebody that says, “I took my time and love to make you something I knew you would enjoy.” That type of Christmas is perfect in every way. Follow this link to read up on how to have a stress free Christmas before you start running in a million directions!

Witches Brew CandleWitches Brew Candle Recipe

Today, Nature’s Garden has a brand new candle recipe that is just in time for Halloween! This Witches Brew Candle recipe is sure to get your friends excited for the upcoming spooky season! The candle is black and purple striped just like a witch’s stockings would be and poking out of the top is her pointed hat!. Did she melt into the candle and all that is left is her hat? Looks like it to me!

This candle is simple to make! We chose to use Joy Wax, for the base of the candle and Pillar of Bliss for her hat and the fluffy purple top! The whole candle is scented in our fun Halloween fragrance, Witches Brew fragrance oil. This candle would surely be the center of attention at your next party or on Beggar’s Night to help light the way for some candy-hungry trick or treaters.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Ingredients Used

Before we get started, let’s talk about some the components that are used for this sweet candle.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Joy WaxWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Joy Wax

If you are familiar with making candles or familiar with Nature’s Garden candle waxes, then you will know how wonderful using Joy Wax for your candles really is. Exclusively sold at Nature’s Garden! Joy wax is a blend of just the right amount of vegetable waxes, food grade paraffin, and other proprietary ingredients. This wax allows candles to smell stronger, both hot and cold. Also, Joy Wax has a wonderfully creamy, smooth texture to the candle once it has set up.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Pillar of BlissWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Pillar of Bliss

Pillar of Bliss is also a blend of soy wax (more than 50%) and paraffin wax used for poured votive and pillar candles. Pillar of Bliss Wax has excellent fragrance retention with good cold and hot throw characteristics. This wax has a nice hard finish to it. Therefore, when used in molds for wax melts or tarts, Pillar of Bliss has an easy release from the mold.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Witches Brew Fragrance Oil

Last, but not least, is our Witches Brew Fragrance Oil that inspired our creation. This scent is a unique combination of secret ingredients. However, there are notes of freshly brewed coffee and something spicy that you just can’t quite place! This fragrance oil isn’t your ordinary fall fragrance!

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Ingredients You will Need and Available at Nature’s Garden

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Other Ingredients and Equipment You’ll Need

  • Mixing Bowls
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Scale
  • Apothecary Jar
  • Pot (for double boiler)
  • Pencil (used to curl your candle wicks)
  • Witch Had Mold (From Flexible Molds www.flexiblemolds.com)

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Before You Get Started

Before you get started on your candle creating, it is best to familiarize yourself with how to make a candle. Check out our class on how to make Joy Wax Candles and our Candle Wick Chart to help you find the correct size wick for the container that you will be using!

Also, before you start on your candle, you will want to clean and organize your work space. Make sure you have enough space to work on your candle. Give all your equipment and your work space a good wipe down. Now you can gather your supplies and your candle making equipment. Once you have everything cleaned and prepared, you are ready to move on to creating!

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Prepare the Double BoilerWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Prepare the Double Boiler

As with all candle making, you will need to have a double boiler. If you are familiar with this step then you can move on with the recipe. If not, we can give a quick tutorial. Since you will need a pouring pot, this will act as the inner portion of your double boiler. This will also hold your melting wax and it will go inside the larger portion of your double boiler. The larger pot (you can even use an old cake pan) will hold at least 3 inches of water. You can place the larger pot onto your heat source, and go ahead and add the water.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Prepping the Pillar of Bliss

Our first step will be preparing the witch hat. For this, you will need the Witch Hat Mold from Flexible Molds. These molds are wonderful for soap making and for candle making. They are, of course, flexible which means releasing your product is easier than a regular hard mold. Also, they are durable, last a long time and clean up easily. So place your pouring pot on the scale, tare out its weight and weigh in 2 ounces of Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax. Place your pouring pot into the larger pot with the heating water. Stir the wax occasionally until the wax is melted and has reached the correct temperature.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Adding the Black Candle DyeWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Adding the Black Candle Dye

Now that your wax has melted completely you can now add the black candle dye. So go ahead and add in 4 drops of the dye. Give this a nice stir to incorporate the dye completely.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Adding the Fragrance OilWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Adding the Fragrance Oil

Once the wax has reached the correct temperature, it is ready for the fragrance oil. So go ahead and weigh in 0.2 ounces of the Witches Brew and stir this well to completely combine the fragrance.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Pouring The HatWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Pouring The Hat

Now that you have your fragrance oil and black candle dye added and combined, your next step will be pouring the hat. Go ahead and carefully pour the wax into the Witch Hat mold. Allow this to set and cool completely before removing. Once it has, you can pop the witch hat out and set it aside for the time being.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Preparing the Candle JarWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Preparing the Candle Jar

Next, you will want to get your container ready. You will be using 2 wicks for this candle. Go ahead and adhere both wicks to the bottom of your jar using a glue gun. Once this is done, you can set it aside for the moment.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Preparing the Purple LayerWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Preparing the Purple Layer

You are now ready to start on the purple layer of your candle. In your pouring pot, weigh out 2 ounces of the Joy Wax. Place the pouring pot in your double boiler. Stir this wax occasionally until the wax is fully melted and has reached its correct melting temperature. Now you can add 2 drops of purple Spectrum Liquid Candle dye, stirring well. Next, add in 0.2 ounces of Witches Brew fragrance oil and stir this well also.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Pouring the Purple LayerWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Pouring the Purple Layer

Now that your wax is scented and colored, the next step is to pour into your container. Slowly pour this layer into your prepared candle jar. Allow this layer to set up before moving on to the next step.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Prepping the Black Layer

Next, you will be working on the black layer of the candle. In your pouring pot, weigh out 2 ounces of Joy Wax. Melt this wax, as before, stirring occasionally until the wax has completely melted. You can add in 4 drops of black candle dye now, stirring well. Then you can add in 0.2 ounces of the Witches Brew fragrance oil.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Pouring the Black LayerWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Pouring the Black Layer

Now that your wax is scented and colored, slowly pour this layer on top of the purple layer. Allow this to set up before moving on to the next step.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Prepping and Pouring the Next LayersWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Prepping and Pouring the Next Layers

Next, you will repeat the process of the black layer and the purple layer, two more times. Always make sure your wicks are straight up, adjusting them, if necessary, as the wax cools.  The last layer being the black layer. You should have 6 layers total before moving onto the next step. Once you have completed the last layer and have allowed it to set up, you can move onto the last layer of your candle.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Preparing the Whipped Wax

Now that your layers are done, you can move on to the whipped wax topping! In your pouring pot, weigh out 4 ounces of Joy Wax. Melt this in your double boiler, stirring occasionally until it has melted completely. Once your wax has melted, you can add in 1 drop of the purple liquid candle dye. Next, add in 0.4 ounces of Witches Brew fragrance oil. Stir well to completely incorporate the fragrance.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Whipping the Wax

You will want your wax to thicken before you start to whip it. When it has started to set up, you can begin whipping it with either a spoon, a whisk or even a fork.  Once you have your Joy Wax well whipped and fluffy, add dollops of it to the top of your candle, creating soft peaks with your utensil of choice.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Adding the Witch's HatWitches Brew Candle Recipe: Adding the Witch’s Hat

Next, you will be adding your prepared witch hat to the whipped topping. You will want to do this before the topping is set up, so go ahead and place the hat gently, but firmly into the topping, centering it in front of your wicks. We chose to tilt our hat slightly.  However, you can lay yours standing straight up, if you choose. Lastly, taking a pencil, curl your wicks around the pencil to complete the candle.

Witches Brew Candle Recipe: Letting Your Candle Set Up

Your candle is now complete and looking beautiful! However, let your candle set and cure for at least 24-48 hours before using it. This will help the fragrance and waxes to fully bond together allowing the candle to have a better scent throw. The only thing left to do?  Trim your wicks to about 1/4″ before burning your candle.  You can even remove the witch hat and use it in your wax melter.

Candle Making for KidsCandle Making for Kids

Arts and crafts are very important for a child to participate in. In the classrooms of today, there is a strong emphasis on the common cores of learning. Math, reading, writing, and science. Today, we will talk about candle making for kids.

However, the arts are just as important for a child’s growth as math can be. Learning about the world of creativity allows a child’s mind to develop in all kinds of directions. It’s never to early to start letting a child’s creative side take over. Simply holding a crayon, a paintbrush or a piece of chalk will start developing their motor skills. Their language will take shape as they learn words of description and colors. Decision making is also part of the creative process. “How do I want this to look?” “What color should the bird be?” Visual learning is very important because it gives the brain the freedom to explore, relax and not think of anything complex! Candle making for kids is a fun craft that lets kids explore texture, color, scents and all things creative!

Most kids love making and creating things for people they love. As a child, it was one of my favorite things to do. Nature’s Garden has some awesome recipes if you are looking for something different for the kids to explore. Creating candles with our Pillar of Bliss is a quick and simple craft for kids and parents. Not only is it safe, as there is no heating required, but you are able to let your creativity shine with designs, fragrances, and colors! If your child has ever made one of those “sand in jar” crafts, the technique is very similar.

Candle Making for Kids: Before You Get Started

Before you begin your creations, you will need to gather some supplies!

Candle Making for Kids: Pillar of Bliss

The type of wax that is best used in layering candles is our Pillar of Bliss. This wax is a soy/paraffin blend that is perfect for creating pillar candles or candles in molds. The wax hardens up beautifully and releases from the molds easily. It also makes wonderful layered candles! It lets you get creative without all the hassle of melting wax! Plus, it has amazing cold and hot throw!

Candle Making for Kids: Let’s Learn the Process!

Before we start on some of our favorite candle recipes, let’s talk about how the process of granulated candle making is done! As with any candle making prep, you will want to get your container ready by putting in your wicks. Which size wick do you use, you ask? Follow this link to find out the correct size! Now, simply add a drop of hot glue to the bottom of the candle wick tab and secure it to the bottom of your container, right in the middle. If the wick is to long, simply snip the excess off leaving at least 1 1/2 inch above your container.

Candle Making for Kids: Getting the Wax Ready

When it comes to layered candle making, fill each Ziploc bag with have their own color/fragrance mix. If you plan on making a lot of candles you can make your colored/scented layers in one pound batches. So let’s get your wax ready to color and scent. Using the gallon size Ziploc bags, you will weigh out your wax according to your recipe into the required number of bags. If your candle recipe calls for 6 layers, you will be using 6 bags and the wax will be divided and weighed out into each one.

Candle Making For Kids: Adding your Fragrances

As with any type of candle making, a general rule of thumb for adding fragrance oil to your wax is using 1 to 1 1/2 ounces per pound of wax. Therefore, each bag that holds 1 pound of wax will require 1 to 1 1/2 ounce of fragrance oil.

Candle Making for Kids: Adding the Color

Next, you will be adding color to each Ziploc bag. You will add the required number of drops according to your recipe, or simply add a small amount to achieve the color you wish.

Candle Making for Kids: Mixing it Up

Now that we have our wax, fragrance, and color added in, seal the bag tightly, and shake each bag, mixing the wax, fragrance and color up really well! Squeeze and squish it good! Get all that color worked in!

Candle Making for Kids: Adding the Wax to the Containers

Now that your wax is mixed up, you will start adding it to your container of choice. Simply open up your Ziploc bag a start pouring into your container. If you are layering colors, make sure you leave enough room! Always keep your wick straight when you are filling your containers. Continue adding the other colored wax layers the same way until your container is almost full.

Candle Making for Kids: Getting creative

Want to create a tie dye look? Take one of your wooden skewers and along the inside of your glass container and draw lines going down. Gently tap your container on the counter once you have drawn the lines and the colored wax from one layer will fall into these lines!

Candle Making for Kids: Bacon Candle Recipe

Our first recipe is incredibly simple and a good way to start kids out on the road to candle making. Bacon Candle recipe calls for Pillar of Bliss, our Spectrum Liquid Candle dye in shades of red, and of course our Bacon fragrance oil. Bacon fragrance oil? Yes, indeed! Smells just like bacon frying in a frying pan! Everything’s better with bacon, right? For this recipe, you will start off by separating the wax into 3 different Ziploc baggies, adding drops of colorant and then the Bacon fragrance. Next, your little candle maker will then massage the colors and scent it into the wax. Once that is done, simply pour the now scented/colored wax into your container, creating a layered look of bacon. This candle is perfect for younger kids to help create since there is no melting wax involved!

Candle Making for Kids Autumn Leaves Potpourri Recipe

Up next is a fun, fall recipe that requires a little bit of heat for melting. Even though this recipe is still quick and easy, some adult supervision is a requirement since some of the wax will be melted. The cute little leaves in our Autumn Leaves Potpourri recipe, are made with  Pillar of Bliss and colored with some pretty fall colors. We made these leaves with a mold from Flexiblemolds.com. These molds are durable, easy to clean up and are perfect for any candle or soap making! This particular mold is called dime sized Leaves candle and soap mold.  We scented this potpourri with our Autumn Woods fragrance oil. A lovely, fall woodsy scent of pine, citrus and cedar wood! We used 24 K Gold Mica to color the granulated part of the candle. These potpourris are so easy to make! They would make such pretty little gifts to give!

Candle Making for Kids: Green Camouflage Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Green Camouflage Candle Recipe

Here’s another easy recipe that the young ones can definitely help out with! This Green Camouflage Candle is made just like our Bacon Candle. You will color and scent the wax in a bag and then create layers of various greens and browns to look like the camouflage that our brave soldiers wear. The fragrance we chose for this recipe is our Fresh Outdoors. This fragrance is perfect for those that love a fresh, green fragrance! You will get floral notes of lily and jasmine, orange and ozone. Perfect for those that love the outdoors! Your kids will have fun creating camo layers so let their imagination take over!

Candle Making for Kids: Pink Camouflage Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Pink Camouflage Candle Recipe

Well, the boys got to make their own candle, now for the girls’ candle! Pink Camouflage Candle is made exactly like the Green Camouflage! We chose the fragrance oil NG Can Can Fragrance Oil for the ultimate girly girl, camouflage and all! This scent is floral with a touch of vanilla and musk! Your little girl will have a blast making her own candle in pretty shades of pink, red and burgundy.

Candle Making for Kids: Rainbow Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Rainbow Candle Recipe

This Rainbow Candle recipe would be fun to make when teaching kids the colors of the rainbow. This candle is truly simple to create and a definite must for the little ones to help make. Once the kids have finished squishing the color and fragrance into the wax using the Ziploc bag method, they can carefully pour their wax into the container to create a layered look of a rainbow. It couldn’t get any easier than that, right? We chose our fittingly Rainbow fragrance oil that smells like it’s just bursting with color! Yummy, sweet fruit of every kind hits your nose with one whiff!

Candle Making for Kids: Glistening Snowflakes Potpourri RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Glistening Snowflakes Potpourri Recipe

Here is another potpourri recipe made like the Autumn Leaves recipe. Glistening Snowflakes Potpourri has pretty little blue snowflakes scattered throughout the glistening “snow”. Once again, we have used a mold from Flexiblemolds.com. This mold is the Mini Snowflakes candle and soap mold. We have added some Diamond Dust Mica to the granulated wax to make it shimmer and have scented the whole thing, the snowflakes and the snow, with our Jack Frost fragrance oil. The scent is a perfect wintry mix of peppermint and vanilla!

Candle Making for Kids: Hydrangea Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Hydrangea Candle Recipe

What could be more perfect for spring or summer than our Hydrangea Candle Recipe? Hydrangeas are bushes that bloom beautiful hues of blues, purples and sometimes greens. We created the pattern to mimic the puffy blossoms of the hydrangea. The finishing touch is some cute little embed butterflies (because butterflies are attracted to hydrangeas). Of course, we scented this creation with our Hydrangea Heaven! This fragrance oil is a beautiful, soft floral scent that is perfect in candles and in soap making!

Candle Making for Kids: A Final Note

Making granulated candles are great for fundraisers! Use your school’s colors and get a copy of the mascot artwork. You can create a label with the mascot and school name then adhere to the front of your containers. If you have a special charity event that you are donating too, how about creating candles in the colors of the charity? Pink and white for Breast Cancer Awareness, purple for Cystic Fibrosis or red, white and blue for patriotism. There are so many options! You are only limited by your imagination!

We hope you enjoyed reading about all the fun candles kids can help create. Candle making in itself can seem daunting to anybody who has never made candles in their life. So, if you are a first timer, these recipes are perfect for you! Learning the steps, and the process of candle making is easy and these recipes can help you get started on a fun new hobby! 2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I have always loved burning candles, so about ten years ago I started making my own.  As it turned out, candle making was the perfect creative outlet for me.  I honed in on soy because of it’s qualities vs. paraffin; it’s sustainable, made in America, long burning, soot-less and has excellent throw.  My hobby has turned into my passion to make excellent products that I can proudly share with others to enjoy and appreciate.  I started selling my products at vendor/craft shows last fall and am now stocked in four stores.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  Soy candles, tarts, air fresheners, room sprays and scented stuffed animals.

4.  What are your business goals?  My goal is to increase sales by at least 50% in the next twelve months.  Implement a well designed web-site that is fast and easy to navigate.  And to continue making products that leave my customers wondering why they ever bought anything else.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  I love your 464 soy wax along with the pillar of bliss.  I enjoy all your fragrances and really like the NG Signatures.  You keep so many wonderful scents stocked it makes it easy to have stock for all the different requests that come in.  The helpful hints you have on your site are always very useful!

A Passion for Crafting Everyday

fragrance oilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name:  My name is Michelle Pitzer and my company name is Natural Creations by Shell

I love to create and craft anything and everything I can get my hands on! I started making m&p soaps years ago because I wanted to try my hands at something new and I fell in love! It first started as just another fun hobby, then gifts for family and friends, and occasionally selling around Christmas time. Over the last year I have decided this is it and I have now been working on doing more craft shows and really trying to make this a full time business. I am making so much more than m&p and hand scrubs now, I’ve added a whole line of bath & body treats, candles, and many of the other crafts I enjoy making such as bookmarks, cat toys, and yarn wreaths. My passion for this seems to grow more and more each and everyday. I put great care and love in each and every product that I make. I would like to eventually have a little store with a workshop and hold classes as well. Coming across your website has helped spark the creativity! My favorite Natures Garden product is the Pillar of Bliss Wax, I love all the fragrance oils I’ve tried, aroma beads, herbs, lip balm base & flavorings, m&p’s, and the jars are just some of my favorite NG items!

Here is a photo of Eucalyptus & Spearmint Bath Bombs – Ingredients from NG include Avocado Oil, Eucalyptus EO, Spearmint FO, Eucalyptus Leaf, and Spearmint Leaf
