Weigh Out the Pillar of Bliss
The first thing that we need to do is prepare our orange slices. We will not need to use these until later on in the recipe, but they need time to set up ahead of time. First, start by bringing out your digital scale. Like with any recipe, we will be needing this a lot to measure out our ingredients. Weigh out 27 grams of Natures Garden’s Pillar of Bliss and melt it using the double boiler method. This is the safest way to melt the wax and makes for an easy clean up.
Coloring the Wax
Once the Pillar of Bliss is melted all the way, add 2 drops of orange Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye. These couple of drops will be enough to provide the medium orange color that we are looking for. Next, add 3 grams of the Orange Juice Cake Fragrance Oil to the wax. As we mentioned in the beginning, this is one of the Natures Garden original fragrance oils. It is also included in the best sellers list at our company! The smell of it is just like the actual version of this cake recipe! Stir the ingredients in the pouring pot thoroughly in order for everything to be mixed together well.
Pour the Wax into the Mold
Now, we need to get our orange slices mold ready from flexible molds. When it is ready to go, pour the wax that we melted, colored, and scented into each one of the orange slice molds and allow them some time to set up. The mold has ten cavities, which is a little bit more than we need for this recipe. Pour carefully in this step because things can get messy. If they do, wait to remove excess wax until it has hardened, to make the removal easier. We will come back to these when we need them in a later step after they have set up.
Preparing the Candle Jar
While our orange pieces are setting up, we can move onto the preparation of the candle jar. We just need one 16 oz glass apothecary candle jar. We are preparing this ahead of time so that when the time comes that we need it, it will be ready to go while our wax is still hot. First, you will need to heat up a hot glue gun along with a hot glue stick. Take two candle wicks and put a dab of hot glue on the rounded silver bottom of them. Quickly place them in the candle jar and press down so that the glue will adhere to the glass of the apothecary jar. Make sure the candle wicks a centered and evenly spaced. Then, you can set this to the side as well until we need it again.
Melt the Joy Wax
In the next step, we will start on the actual wax portion of our candle. There are a couple of layers to this candle, and the bottom one looks like a crust, which is what we will call it. Using the scale again, weigh out 100 grams of Joy Wax. Put this in a pouring pot and melt it using the double boiler method once again. Then, add a little bit of scent to the crust by putting in 10 grams of Orange Juice Cake Fragrance Oil.
Color Your Wax
Now, we need to add some colorant to our wax. Since we want this to look like a brown crust, we used 1 drop of the brown spectrum liquid candle dye. We did not want it turning out too dark, so we were cautious of adding too much. You can test out what the color will look like by spooning a couple of drops onto a plate and letting it set up. If it is too light, add a small drop or toothpick it. We also dipped a toothpick into the yellow candle dye to ensure it would be a light brown. Now, stir the two colorants into the wax using a spoon to incorporate everything together.
Scent Your Wax
Next, to your melted wax, add 10 grams of the Orange Juice Cake Fragrance Oil. Once you have added the scent, stir to fully blend the fragrance.
Pour Wax into the Candle Jar
While it is still hot, take the wax mixture and pour it into the candle jar very steadily and carefully. When doing this step, it is important that you remember to keep the candle wicks straight and centered. Otherwise, the candle will not burn correctly. So, once you have poured the candle wax, straighten the wicks and make sure they stay straight while the candle is setting up. Now, allow enough time for this layer to fully set up and harden before starting on the whipped topping.
Creating the Beeswax Confetti
While you are waiting for the layer of crust to harden, there is another step you can work on in the mean time. We can spend a few minutes preparing a part of this recipe that will be used a little later on. This is coloring the pieces of “confetti” that will be used to top off this orange juice cake candle recipe. You will need to get about a teaspoon of the Beeswax White Pastilles and put them into a Ziploc Bag. We used a gallon size bag, but a regular Ziploc will work just as well. For the colorant, dip a toothpick into the orange candle dye and gently apply it to the beeswax so that no holes are poked into the bag. Then tightly seal the bag closed. Using your fingers, spread the colorant over the beeswax until they are evenly coated. You can set these aside until the very last step.
Making the Whipped Portion
Once you have made sure that your crust layer is completely set up, we can start making the next part of our candle. This is going to be the whipped fluffy white portion. Weigh out 300 grams of Joy Wax and melt it using the double boiler method just as we did earlier. After the wax is melted, add to it 30 grams of Orange Juice Cake Fragrance Oil. Stir the scent into the wax.
Whipping the Joy Wax
Allow the joy wax to cool off for a couple of minutes since it is going be hot coming right off of the stove top. Then, transfer it to a mixing bowl. This will help it to cool down some. You now need to get your electric hand mixer at the ready. Start whisking and whip the Joy Wax for a couple of minutes at a time.
Continue to Mix
Keep on mixing and whisking the wax on and off in intervals, taking breaks in between to allow the wax to set up some. Eventually, it will start becoming the consistency of a creamy frosting. This is what we are looking for, but it might take a little while to reach this point. Continue to mix the wax until it finally gets there.
Scoop the Whipped Wax into the Jar
Next, we are going to take a regular sized spoon out. Scoop up a small portion of the whipped wax and put it on the top of the crust layer in the candle jar. This is going to allow for the orange slices to stay put that are applied in our next step. The whipped Joy Wax can be pretty messy to work with, so the sides of the jar may need to be wiped down after this step. This will make it easier to see where to place the orange slices.
Line the Jar with Orange Slices
At this point, you can pop out the orange slices from the mold that we made in our first step. Then, take them and line the sides of the jar with them, evenly spaced around it. We used 7 out of our 8 slices to do this. Stick them in the light layer of the whipped wax to get them to stay in place. The point is for the oranges to be visible after the rest of the whipped topping is applied.
Finish Applying the Topping
Now, take the remainder of your whipped wax and spoon it into the jar on top of the orange slices. Use a spoon to fluff up the topping until you are satisfied with the way it looks. Keeping the wicks straight and centered can be difficult during this step. They are bound to become covered in wax, but they can be wiped off afterward.
Top off the Candle Wax
Lastly, we can sprinkle the orange beeswax confetti pieces on top of the fluffed wax. Place the last orange slice on top of the candle to complete it, pressing slightly into the whipped wax. After that, trim your wicks as desired.
