Today, we are going to show you how to make a fun project that is perfect for Halloween!  Our Bite Me Bloody Bath Gel project uses Natures Garden’s Bite Me Fragrance Oil along with the Ritzy Bath Gel.  This soap making project is a fun and easy project that will make a spooktacular addition to your Halloween bath and body product line!

8 oz. Clear Boston Round Bottles

White 24/410 Lotion Pumps

Da Bomb Soap Dye- Red

Ritzy Gallon Pump Dispenser

Disposable Pipettes

Other Items Needed for the Bite Me Bloody Bath Gel Project

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Spoon

Distilled Water

Hand Mixer

Funnel

Scale

Total Recipe Amounts:

27 ounces Ritzy Bath Gel

2 ounces Distilled Water

1/2 tsp Xanthum Gum

12 ml Bite Me Fragrance Oil

15 drops Da Bomb Soap Dye- Red

A Closer Look at Some of the Ingredients Used

Before we begin, let’s look at some of the Natures Garden products that we will be using in this soap making recipe.  We will look at these ingredients and talk a little more about each one in depth, below.  For those familiar with these products, you can go ahead and begin.

Ritzy Bath GelRitzy Bath Gel

The Ritzy Bath Gel from Natures Garden is a premade base.  In fact, it can be used right out of the jug.  This bath gel base allows you to create a quick bath and body product that work wonderfully.  It should be noted though, some fragrance oils can thin the base.  In order to counteract this, you can use a thickener, which we will talk about next, to get the base back to the proper thickness.

Xanthum GumXanthum Gum

The xanthum gum from Natures Garden Candle and Soap Making Supplies is a food grade, polysacharide, all natural thickener.  This thickener is designed to maintain transparency.  So, it perfect for products like our Bite Me Bloody Bath Gel.  It will allow your gel to maintain that gel look without turning it cloudy.   Xanthum gum can be used in products such as bath gel, shampoo, bubble bath, lotions, creams, shower gels, and liquid soaps.  Just a small amount of xanthum gum goes a long way.  In fact, you will only need .1-1% xanthum gum needed to thicken a thinned bath and body product.  When using xanthum gum, you will need to create a slurry.  So, you simply mix the powder with distilled water and mix with a hand mixer for about 5 minutes.  If you simply add the powder to your product, it will clump and not thicken.  Once you have mixed your xanthum gum, it should be quickly added to your product.

Da Bomb Soap DyesDa Bomb Soap Dyes

For this recipe, we will be working with the red Da Bomb Soap Dye.  The Da Bomb Soap Dyes from Natures Garden are water based colorants used in soap and cosmetic making.  They are FD&C dyes.  This particular soap dye is the red #40.  So, what make the Da Bomb Soap Dyes perfect for this soap making project?  Well, when used in bath gel, they allow you to maintain a translucent appearance.  In fact, this is also true when the Da Bomb soap colorants are used in a clear melt and pour soap base.  They produce a wonderful vibrant color.  However, when they are placed in a white soap base such as shea butter or goat’s milk mp soap base, they will give the finished soaps a beautiful pastel color.  They are also fabulous in lotions, whipped soap, and slime, giving each product that wonderful pastel color.

The Fragrance Oil Used in the Bite Me Bloody Bath Gel RecipeThe Fragrance Oil Used in the Bite Me Bloody Bath Gel Recipe

Dracula would fall in love with this fragrance oil by Natures Garden! Bite Me Fragrance Oil starts with fresh citrus notes of crisp lime and juicy orange sparkle with effervescent highlights. The citrus notes lead to a luscious blend of berry and cherry in this playful scent. Then, leafy green accents intensify as a base of vanilla creates sweet tones for the fragrance.  Bite Me Fragrance Oil is a Natures Garden original scent.

Top Notes:  black cherry, orange, strawberry, pineapple, lime
Mid Notes:  eucalyptus, violet, lily
Base Notes:  clove, vanilla bean

Did you know?  Count von Count the Muppet vampire from Sesame Street is based on the vampire myth that throwing mustard seeds outside ones door will stop any vampire from entering the home.  This is because, as the myth states, a vampire is compelled to count items, so therefore, the vampire would have to count all of the seeds which would take until sunrise.

So, how do our customers feel about Bite Me Fragrance Oil?  Well, they LOVE it!  Our clients use this berry scent in everything from wax melts to melt and pour soap to scrubs!  In fact it even performs well in CP soap!  Many consider this powerful fragrance oil a must have in their cold process soap line!  It had a perfect pour, no ricing, no acceleration, no separation, discolors to a light tan, very strong, a must have for all lines.

Bite Me Bloody Bath Gel Recipe Preparations

Prior to beginning, you will want to prepare your work area.  So, get all of your supplies out and ready in your clean work area.  In addition, clean and sanitize your packaging materials as well as any utensils that you will be using.  Finally, place the Ritzy gallon pump dispenser on the Ritzy Bath Gel jug.

Weigh Out Your Bath GelWeigh Out Your Bath Gel

First, you will need a deep mixing bowl.  Using a deep mixing bowl will make preparing the handcrafted bath gel much easier.  So, you will need your scale placed in front of you.  Then, place your bowl on the scale and weigh out 27 ounces of the Ritzy Bath Gel.

Color the Bite Me Bath GelColor the Bite Me Bath Gel

Next, we will add the soap colorant to the Bite Me Bath Gel.  So, you will need the red Da Bomb Soap Dye.  Then, to the Ritzy Bath Gel, you will need to add about 15 drops of the red Da Bomb Soap Dye.  Now, you will need to stir the gel to incorporate the color.  However, be careful not to over mix or mix too quickly.  Doing so can cause the base to create bubbles.

Adding the Bite Me Fragrance OilAdding the Bite Me Fragrance Oil

At this time we will be incorporating the scent.  As we talked about earlier, we will be adding Bite Me Fragrance Oil to this bath gel recipe.  If you have not worked with this berry scent in the past, you are missing out!  It happens to be one of my favorite fragrance oils!  So, the easiest way to add the fragrance is with a disposable pipette.  Using a disposable pipette, add 12 ml Bite Me Fragrance Oil to the bath gel.  Using a mixing spoon, blend the ingredients together.  Remember, stir slowly as stirring to quickly can create bubbles.

Adding the Xanthum Gum ThickenerAdding the Xanthum Gum Thickener

Now, you may notice that the fragrance oil has thinned the Rity Bath Gel.  Well, to help thicken the base back up, we will be adding some of the xanthum gum.  In order to do this, we need to first create a slurry  So, since xanthum gum will clump when added to water, we will first need to pre-mix it.  In an empty mixing bowl, add 1/2 tsp of the xanthum gum powder.  Then, and add 1/4 cup of room temperature distilled water.  Finally, use a hand mixer to mix the ingredients.  You will need to mix the two ingredients for about five minutes.  You will notice the mixture begin to take on a gel-like look.  This gel can then be added to the Bite Me scented bath gel in order to thicken it.  How much you add will depend on how thick you would like your finished bath gel to be.  So, simply add a small amount and then stir.  Once you are happy with the thickness, you are ready to move on.

Adding the Bath Gel to the BottlesAdding the Bath Gel to the Bottles

Finally, we are ready to add the Bite Me Bloody Bath Gel to the 8 ounce bottles.  So, you will need three bottles.  Additionally, you will need three pump dispensers.  Finally, you will need your funnel.  So, place the into the opening of one of the bottles.  Then, fill the bottles with some of the bath gel.

Then, remove the funnel and repeat this process with each of the bottles.  Lastly, place a pump on each bottle, trimming the dip tube on each one before placing it in the bottle.

Labeling the BottlesLabeling the Bottles

For this project, we decided to create labels for the handmade bath gel.  We then added a fun Halloween themed label to each bottle.

We hope that you have enjoyed creating this Bite Me Blood Bath Gel project.  If you have any questions about this project, or any other candle, cosmetic, or soap making questions, feel free to reach out to us.  You can contact us on our HUG Line, through email, or any of our social media sites.  We hope to hear from you soon!

Candy Apple Bath Bombs RecipeCandy Apple Bath Bombs Recipe

Today, we will show you how to create the candy apple bath bombs recipe from Natures Garden.  This caramel apple bath bombs it the perfect fall staple for your bath and body product line.  Not only does it look just like a caramel apple, but it smells just like the real thing as well!  So, if you are as much of a caramel apple fan as I am, read on to learn how to make these amazing bath fizzies!

Candy Apple Bath Bombs Recipe Ingredients

Citric Acid
Baking Soda- Sodium Bicarbonate
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
Hemp Oil Melt and Pour Soap Base
Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base
Caramel Fragrance Oil
Green Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil
8 oz. Clear PET Bullet Bottles
White Fine Mist Sprayers 24/410
Natures Garden Apron
GLOVES for Soap Making- 1 pair
MASK for Soap Making- 2 count
Glasses for Soap Making
Bath Bomb Molds
Neon Green FUN Soap Colorant
Lime Green FUN Soap Colorant
FUN Soap Colorant Yellow Oxide
FUN Soap Colorant- Red Oxide
Disposable Pipettes

Other Ingredients & Equipment You’ll Need:
Cutting Board
Scale
Microwave safe containers
Deep Mixing Bowl
Lollipop Sticks
Large Knife
Microwave
Rubbing alcohol (in the bullet bottle)
Wax Paper

A Few Additional Preparations

When preparing any type of bath bomb or bath fizzy recipe, it is best that they are prepared in non-humid climates.  Bath bombs fizz when added to water due to the combination of baking soda and citric acid being added to water.  So, when prepared in humid climates the bath bombs can actually react to the moisture in the air itself.

Prior to making this recipe, pour some of your rubbing alcohol into your 8 ounce bullet bottle in order to be prepared.  Another option is witch hazel.  You can use witch hazel when creating bath bombs as well.  Both will work when creating bath bombs.  However, rubbing alcohol will create a harder bath fizzy.

About the Fragrance Oils

Before we begin, let’s take a look at the scents we will be using.  For this bath bomb recipe we will be working with two fragrance oils to create our candy apple bath bomb recipe.  First, we will use Natures Garden’s Caramel Fragrance Oil.  The second scent that we will be using in our bath fizzy project is the powerful Green Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil.

Caramel Fragrance OilCaramel Fragrance Oil

First, let’s look at Natures Garden’s Caramel fragrance oil.  This scent by  is the aroma of buttery, toffee caramel. It is a great to use by itself or to a wonderful scent to mix with others for creative fragrance blends.  In fact, it is smells wonderful when mixed with our Green Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil.

Green Apple Explosion Fragrance OilGreen Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil

Next, let’s talk about the Green Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil from Natures Garden!  This apple scent is unbelievably strong.  In my opinion, it is the strongest apple scent that we carry here at Natures Garden Candle and Soap Making Supplies. We believe we have quite possibly found the “spunkiest” green apple fragrance oil on earth!  We thought about calling it Granny Smith Apple, but this fragrance deserves a name that “pops” just like its aroma.  Thus, may we present:  Green Apple Explosion! This apple aroma is an NG original scent!

Prepare the Bath Bombs

To begin, we will prepare the bath bombs and allow them to setup before covering them with the melt and pour soap.  So, you will want to put on your apron and gloves before starting.

Recipe Weights for the Green Bath Bomb Portion

182 grams Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
300 grams Citric Acid
600 grams Baking Soda
9 grams Green Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil
9 grams Caramel Fragrance Oil
4 grams Lime Green FUN Soap Colorant
4 grams Neon Green FUN Soap Colorant

Prepare the Powdered Ingredients for the Candy Apple Bath Bombs Recipe

Prepare the Baking SodaFirst, you will need a deep mixing bowl.  To your mixing bowl, add the baking soda.  Then, use your hands to break any clumps that you may find in the baking soda.

Add the Sodium Cocoyl IsethionateNext, to the bowl containing the baking soda, add the sodium cocoyl isethionate.  Then, use your hands to blend the ingredients together.  Once again, as you are mixing, break up any clumps that you find in the mixture.

Add the Citric AcidThe final powdered ingredient that we will be adding is the citric acid.  So, add the citric acid to the bowl.  Then, mix the ingredients together.  Finally, break any lumps found in the mixture apart just as you did before.

Scenting and Coloring the Caramel Apple Bath Bombs Recipe

Coloring the Caramel Apple Bath Bombs Recipe

At this time, we will color and scent the candy apple bath bombs.  So, to the bowl containing the powdered ingredients, add the fragrance oils.  First, you will need to add 9 grams of the caramel fragrance oil.  In addition, add 9 grams of the green apple explosion fragrance oil.  Finally, we will add the two colorants.  So, to the same bowl add 4 grams of the lime green colorant and 4 grams of the neon green FUN Soap Colorant from Natures Garden.  Once you have added the ingredients, use your hands to mix everything together.  You will want to be sure everything is mixed thoroughly before moving on.

Prepare the Candy Apple Bath Bomb Mixture for the Molds

Prepare the Candy Apple Bath Bomb Mixture for the MoldsNow, you will need the bottle of rubbing alcohol that you prepared earlier.  Then, begin spraying the candy apple bath bomb mixture with rubbing alcohol.  You will want to spray in small amounts.  So, spray a small amount of the rubbing alcohol and then use your hands to mix.  Continue spraying and mixing.  You will want to repeat this process until it reaches a point that you can squeeze the mixture and it holds a form.  However, be careful not to overspray the mixture.  If this happens, your bath bomb will become too wet and it will not fizz when it is added to the bathtub.

Fill the Bath Bomb Molds

Fill the Bath Bomb MoldsOnce your bath bomb mixture is at the proper consistency, you can fill the bath bomb molds.  You will need a total of seven sets of bath bomb molds.  Begin filling each of your molds.  Make sure you are packing the molds tightly.  You will need to fill a total of seven molds.

Putting the Candy Apple Bath Bomb TogetherWhen you have filled all seven molds, you can put the two halves together.  Before pressing the two halves together, spray each one with rubbing alcohol.  Then, press them together.  Allow the bath bombs to setup overnight before moving on.

Adding the Lollipop Stick

Adding the Lollipop Stick

Once your bath fizzies have setup, remove them from the bath bomb molds.  Then, you will need to add one lollipop stick to each bath bomb.  Place a stick through the center of each bath bomb.  You want to apply gentle pressure and slowly insert the stick.  If you apply too much pressure or try to move too quickly, your bath bomb can begin cracking.  Place the candy apple bath bombs on a sheet of wax paper.  Alternatively, you can place them on a silicone baking mat.

Prepare the Melt and Pour Soap Base

The next step will be preparing the melt and pour soap base.  We will begin by preparing a caramel colored hemp oil melt and pour soap base.  Then, we will go over it with the clear melt and pour soap base.  Now, I am sure you are wondering why we are using two different types of soap base for this portion of the candy apple bath bombs recipe.  Well, we first attempted this recipe using only the clear base.  It took quite a few layers to get a full coverage and used a lot of soap base.  So, then, we added a caramel colored layer using the hemp oil soap base.  However, this look did not have the shiny caramel look that we wanted.  So, we ended up doing a layer of the hemp oil soap base to get the full coverage.  Then, we added a second layer using the clear soap base.

Total Recipe Weights for Hemp Oil Soap Portion

100 grams Hemp Oil MP Soap Base
2 grams Caramel Fragrance Oil
2 grams Green Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil
15 drops Yellow Oxide FUN Soap Colorant
2 drops Red Oxide FUN Soap Colorant

Creating the First Layer of Melt and Pour Soap

Creating the First Layer of Melt and Pour SoapNow, we will prepare the first layer of caramel soap.  For the first layer, we will use the hemp oil melt and pour soap base.  So, in a small bowl, weigh out and melt the hemp oil soap base.  You will want to melt the mp soap in 30-second bursts until the base is in a liquid state.  Then, add the red oxide and yellow oxide FUN Soap Colorants.  Finally, add both the caramel fragrance oil and the green apple explosion fragrance oil.  Stir the melted soap base to blend everything together.

Adding the First Layer of Melt and Pour Soap to the Candy Apple Bath Bombs

Adding the First Layer of Melt and Pour Soap to the Candy Apple Bath Bombs
At this time, you will need a disposable pipette.  Using the disposable pipette, drizzle the caramel colored hemp oil soap over the green bath bombs.  Then, allow the soap to completely setup before moving on.

Total Recipe Amounts For Diamond Clear Soap Portion

100 grams Diamond Clear MP Soap Base
2 grams Caramel Fragrance Oil
2 grams Green Apple Explosion Fragrance Oil
10 drops Yellow Oxide FUN Soap Colorant
1 drops Red Oxide FUN Soap Colorant

Prepare the Clear Melt and Pour Soap

Once you have coated your candy apple bath bomb with the hemp oil mp soap, we will cover it with a clear caramel colored soap base.

Creating the Clear Caramel SoapPrepare the Clear Soap Base

So, weigh out and melt 100 grams of the diamond clear soap base.  Then, add the caramel and apple fragrance oils. In addition, add 10 drops of yellow oxide FUN Soap Colorant and 1 drop of the red oxide FUN Soap Colorant.  Stir to blend the ingredients together.

Adding the Clear Caramel Soap to the Bath BombsAdd the Clear Caramel Colored Soap Base

Use a disposable pipette to drizzle each caramel apple with the caramel coating. Once your soap sets up, your Candy Apple Bath Bombs are ready to use!

Next, let’s talk about kaolin clay powder. Kaolin clay is also known as China Clay.  It is a white clay that is wonderful for those with sensitive skin.  This type of clay is often used to make mineral makeup.  It is used in cosmetic products like foundation, blush, and even eye shadow.  When used in a bath bomb, it helps to harden them.  In this case, there are two reasons we added it to this recipe.  First, it will help harden the face mask when applied to your face.   In addition, like most cosmetic clays, kaolin clay will help clean your skin and help with removing toxins.

So, go ahead and weigh out the kaolin.  You will add the clay to the same bowl you have added your lavender to.  To your medium bowl, add 224 grams of your kaolin white clay.  Then, mix the two ingredients together.

Lavender Face Mask Recipe:  Add the Vitamin E Oil

The next ingredient we will be adding is vitamin E.  Vitamin E oil from Natures Garden comes in the purest form, this is called Tocopherol T-50.  It is not tocopherol acetate.  Vitamin E oil is an antioxidant and is fabulous for your skin.

Add the Vitamin E OilNext, to your bowl containing the powdered ingredients, you will be adding your pure Vitamin E oil.  So, use a disposable pipette to add 24 drops of the Vitamin E oil right to the powder.  Then, once again, mix the ingredients together.

Lavender Face Mask Recipe:  Packaging Your Facial Mask

For this recipe, we decided to package the powder portion of the mask and vegetable glycerin separately.  We chose to create the facial mask recipe this way for a couple of reasons.  First, creating the facial mask mixture separately without the water you will not need to add a preservative. In addition, you will be able to prepare a quick product for your customers.  This project can be created in just a few minutes.  Each two ounce jar will create approximately 4 facial masks.

Packaging Your Facial Mask:  The Powdered Portion

The Powdered Portion

Now, your powdered portion is complete.  You can begin packaging your powdered portion of the facial mask.  So, use a spoon to fill each of your 2 oz white double wall jars.  You will be able to create approximately 8 jars of facial mask.

Packaging Your Facial Mask:  The Liquid Portion

First, let’s talk about the vegetable glycerin.  Vegetable glycerin is a humectant.  This means it will draw moisture to your skin.  So, we add vegetable glycerin to the facial mask to help leave our skin moisturized.  It is important because, when using a facial mask, you are using ingredients that draw impurities from your skin.  So, adding vegetable glycerin will help to leave your skin feeling moisturized.

The Liquid Portion

Next, we will prepare the vegetable liquid portion of the facial mask.  While yes, water needs to be mixed to a mask, we will not be adding it at this point.  That will come later when it is time to use your mask.  So, we will prepare eight bottles of vegetable glycerin.  To each of your half ounce bottles add 12 grams of vegetable glycerin.  Then, place a white ribbed lid on each bottle.

Lavender Face Mask Recipe:  Using Your Facial Mask

We talked earlier about packaging our mask.  So, in order to use the lavender mask, you will need to mix it.  As we talked about before, by mixing it on an as needed basis, it will prolong the shelf life and make it a very fast project to create.  With that being said, we will now talk about how you can use the mask.  It really is a simple process.  In addition, if you are selling this mask as a product, you can sell the jar and bottle as a set and label it with instructions.

Lavender Face Mask Recipe:  Mixing Your Facial Mask

You will need one of your jars of powder.  Also, you will need one of the bottles of vegetable glycerin.  Finally, you will need your small mixing bowl at this time.

Mixing Your Facial Mask

We will start with the lavender powdered mixture.  First, to your small bowl, add about 1 tablespoon of the powder.

Adding Vegetable Glycerin

Next, you will need your bottle of vegetable glycerin.  Then, add about 1/2 teaspoon of your vegetable glycerin to the powder.

Finally, you will add your distilled water.  Ultimately we added about 2 tablespoons.  Lastly, mix to incorporate all of the ingredients together.

Lavender Face Mask Recipe:  Applying Your Facial Mask

Once you have mixed your ingredients together, simply apply a thin layer of the lavender face mask to your face.  Then, relax and allow the lavender mask to harden.  Finally, once the mask has completely hardened, use warm water to remove the clay mask.

Other Ways to Use Lavender:

Natures Garden also carries a variety of other types of lavender as well.  So, let’s take a look at other ways to use lavender in your products.

Lavender Essential Oils and Lavender Flowers

First, let’s look at lavender essential oils.  We carry a couple of types.  First, of course, is our pure lavender essential oil.  Our lavender 40/42 essential oil can be used in a variety of soap and cosmetic recipes.  In addition to soap, you can use it in anything from powder, to lotion to lip balm to hair conditioners.  The sky is the limit.

Lavandin essential oil is next on our list.  For those wondering, “What is lavandin?”, it is a lavender hybrid.  Lavandin does have an aroma that is similar to a lavender essential oil but is not the exact same scent.  It is still a natural and pure essential oil as well.  It can also be used in a variety of soap and cosmetic products.   On a personal note, I especially love this essential oil mixed with peppermint essential oil.  When mixed 2 parts lavandin to 1 part peppermint essential oil, it smells amazingly fresh and clean!

Finally, our whole lavender flowers not only comes in a powdered version, we also carry dried whole lavender flowers.  These can be used infused in lotions, added to bath bombs, or used to create a lavender bath tea just to name a few.

Lavender Fragrance Oil

First, let’s talk about Natures Garden’s Lavender Flowers Fragrance Oil.  This lavender scent is that of true lavender flowers.

Next, on this list of Natures Garden fragrance oils is Lavender Luxury Fragrance Oil.  This lavender aroma starts with notes of lavender, bergamot, eucalyptus, along with citrus zest.  Then, it is followed by notes of lily and sage.  Finally, it sits on base notes of pine, cool camphor, and clove.

Of course, we couldn’t forget to mention Lavender Martini Fragrance Oil.  This one is unique and extremely popular here at Natures Garden, especially it soap.  I would consider this one a must smell fragrance.  To explain this one, think gin meets lavender with an effervescent pop.

Lavender Mint WOW Fragrance Oil is the perfect combination of both mint and lavender.  This lavender scent brings the two together perfectly.  This fragrance oil really is the balance without one overpowering the other.

Fun Lavender Facts:

Now, let’s talk about lavender itself.  Lavender grows wild in Southern Europe, Australia and the United States.  There are many lavender fields that you can actually visit.  Can you imagine visiting one of these farms and begin engulfed in the aroma of lavender?  To find just a few of these fields, read more on the country living website here.

While Natures Garden sells lavender only for use in soap and cosmetic recipes, it is often used in products like smoothies.  Check out these lavender facts and smoothies from Green Blender.

Another reason to love lavender is for its ability to repel insects like flies, fleas, and mosquitoes.  In addition to the fabulous floral aroma of lavender, they are so easy to grow.  It will make a great addition to your flower garden.  They also attract those adorable little butterflies.  Read more from Natural Living Ideas.

What is Stearic Acid Used For

What is Stearic Acid Used For

We at Natures Garden have found that many of our customers have been wondering, “What is stearic acid used for?”. While there are quite a few reasons why this cosmetic ingredient is widely used in both candles as well as bath and body products, it can be confusing to understand how an ingredient could be useful for all these very different products. This can be especially challenging when you don’t know exactly what benefits stearic acid provides these products. So, we are going to go through a few different products that you should formulate using this ingredient. Plus, we will be sharing some of our own recipes that have been enhanced by adding some stearic acid. If you are interested in getting an answer to this common question, then look below to find how stearic acid can benefit your favorite homemade bath and body recipes!

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Homemade Creams and LotionsWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Homemade Creams and Lotions

First of all, this useful cosmetic ingredient will make a smart addition to any cream, body butter, or lotion formulation. Stearic Acid is especially useful for creating thick, luscious lotions that feel wonderful on your skin. If you think about it, this quality is really important for a great lotion recipe. Lotions that are too thin and runny will be harder to get to stay on the skin, so less of the oils and butters will get a chance to nourish the skin.

Plus, you may find that the consistency doesn’t feel as satisfying. So, you won’t really feel like you are getting pampered, even though you should with all the skin-loving ingredients being added. Further, you may even begin to wonder whether your lotion recipe is even working. This would be the exact instance where stearic acid would be needed. Adding this cosmetic ingredient to your existing lotion, cream, or body butter recipes will ensure that your recipe is thicker and more effective!

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Frappe Mocha Body Cream RecipeWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Frappe Mocha Body Cream Recipe

One of our own body cream recipes that includes stearic acid is our Frappe Mocha Body Cream Recipe. This scrumptious lotion recipe includes real, fresh brewed coffee, luscious butters, and skin loving oils. But, the Stearic Acid is the ingredient that really helps create the irresistible texture of this recipe. This wonderful body cream recipe has a thick, creamy consistency that glides over the skin and sinks deep down. The luscious feeling of this lotion combined with the fragrance and skin loving properties creates quite an amazing recipe. The scrumptious scent blend of Fresh Brewed Coffee Fragrance Oil along with the Chocolate Fudge Fragrance Oil is nearly mouthwatering. Plus, the nourishing oils and butters of this recipe truly treat your skin and leave it feeling soft. This cosmetic ingredient helps create a well rounded batch of lotion that is sure to be enjoyed by everyone!

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Shea Lotion with Herbal Infusion RecipeWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Shea Lotion with Herbal Infusion Recipe

Not only is this cosmetic ingredient useful for creating creams and body butters, but our lotion formulations can be enhanced with stearic acid, as well. The Shea Lotion with Herbal Infusion Recipe by Natures Garden is a perfect example of a lotion that can benefit from the addition of stearic acid. This recipe includes an abundance of luxurious oils along with an amazing herbal infusion. This infusion includes herbs like the gorgeous Hibiscus Flowers and Rose Hips. However, the lotion didn’t quite have the right consistency. We wanted a lotion that was creamier and thicker to provide a pampering feel. So, we included some stearic acid to create a recipe that has amazing benefits for the skin and feels absolutely luxurious. This recipe is definitely one you will want to try!

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Making Your Own CandlesWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Making Your Own Candles

Additionally, Stearic Acid can be used to create harder candles that are more effective. This ingredient can be added to any of our container waxes, like Soy Wax, Joy Wax, or Palm Wax, to create a candle that has more integrity. At this point, you may be thinking that you don’t need a hard candle, as you are putting your wax in a container. However, we aren’t adding stearic acid for support. Instead, this candle making ingredient can help your candle burn longer. Since the candle will be harder, the flame will take more time burning down your candle. This means you can enjoy your beautiful candles and their lovely aromas for even longer! All thanks to adding a bit of stearic acid. So, you may want to try adding this ingredient next time you create some homemade candles.

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Homemade Wax Tarts and EmbedsWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Homemade Wax Tarts and Embeds

Also, your homemade wax tarts and candle embeds can both benefits from stearic acid. Not only will these candle creations burn longer, but they will be better able to hold their shape. Have you ever created a wax tart that was too soft? It can be nearly impossible to get the tarts out of the mold or clamshell to use. Plus, once you finally get enough out to use it just ends up making a big mess that ruins some of the enjoyment of scenting your home. But, adding some of the stearic acid will make the wax harder. Plus, the stearic acid will make your tarts shrink slightly upon cooling. This will have your wax melts to pop out of the mold so much easier! So, this ingredient will better allow you to make your own wax tarts.

Additionally, candle embeds can benefit from the addition of this candle ingredient. One of the most important parts in making a wax embed is making sure that the design you want to use doesn’t break or warp as you are working. This means that you don’t want the wax embed to melt or warp as you pour in the rest of your candle wax into your container. So, you will want an embed that is hard and not easy to melt. Plus, you are going to want to make sure that your embed soap doesn’t break before you get the chance to use it. Since your embeds are typically tiny, you are going to need to make sure that your wax is hard enough to maintain the integrity of your shape. So, adding in this cosmetic ingredient will make your wax embed harder to melt or break.

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Creating Strong Scented CandlesWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Working with Heavy Fragrance Oils

Another way that you can utilize stearic acid in candle making is to create products with any of your favorite fragrance oils! Some people have found that it can be difficult working with certain fragrances, even within the recommended amount. This is likely due to the scent being a heavy fragrance. Some examples of heavy scents have vanilla or spicy notes, while many citrus scents tend to be lighter fragrances. This can be frustrating when you find a scent that you love, but it just seeps out of your candle! However, you can use stearic acid to help reduce this seepage and get you the scented candle that you deserve. When using it for this purpose, use about 2%, which would be 2 teaspoons for a pound of wax, to reign in your challenging fragrance oil. So, go ahead and make your whole house smell exactly how you want it!

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Formulating Soap RecipesWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Formulating Soap Recipes

Additionally, stearic acid can be used to enhance your homemade batches of soap. Of course, you can alter the amounts and types of oils that you include to change the quality of your bars. But, you don’t have to alter your whole formulation just to get a harder bar. Sometimes batches just have the perfect blend of oils for your skin and you don’t want to change anything.

Just include some of the stearic acid into your soap recipe to create a slightly harder bar. This is perfect for those that want a very conditioning bar, but don’t want the bars to fall apart. So, this ingredient will add some integrity to your soap bars. Further, adding this wonderful ingredient to your soap recipe will allow your soap to last even longer than before. This means that you will get even more use out of your skin-loving soap. So, all you have to do is add some stearic acid into your recipe to create a bar of soap that is harder and able to last even longer.

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Peppered Poppy Seed Cold Process Soap RecipeWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Peppered Poppy Seed Cold Process Soap Recipe

Since Stearic Acid is useful for homemade soap from scratch, we decided to include it in our own soap recipe. So, we created the lovely Peppered Poppy Seed Cold Process Soap Recipe with this ingredient as well as many other great ones. We included real Poppy Seed to go along with the scent, the gorgeous color, and beautiful flower shape. Plus, we included some luscious oils and butters that are wonderful for the skin. So, we needed to add in some support for our bars to make sure that they retained the pretty shape and lasted a long time. You are sure to love everything about this bar from the appearance to the skin loving ingredients.

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Creating Embed SoapsWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Creating Embed Soaps

Also, stearic acid can be very useful for creating effective embed soaps. Similarly to wax embeds for candles, you are going to want to make sure that your embed holds its shape and doesn’t melt as you work. So, you are going to want to make sure that your embed is hard enough to withstand the melted soap you need to add. Also, you need to be able to move the embeds into the loaf mold without breaking. Thus, adding some of this ingredient to your soap embeds will make the process easier and more fun!

What is Stearic Acid Used For: Improving Homemade CleansersWhat is Stearic Acid Used For: Improving Homemade Cleansers

Another marvelous benefit of using Stearic Acid in your bath and body products is that this cosmetic ingredient will enhance the cleansing power of your recipes. This added ingredient will help break the surface tension and get the water barrier out of the way. Since water molecules will attract one another, it can be difficult to get beneath the water to clean away the grime on your skin. So, you are going to need to break the surface tension to get your soap to really work and get to the dirt and oils that may be trapped. If you are curious about the effects of surface tension on your cleansing products, then check out this simple explanation of the concept at Surface Tension and Water by The USGS Water Science School.

Our next soap project is a swirled melt and pour soap project.  While cold process soap is often swirled, melt and pour soap can be a little harder to get the same type of swirl.  However, with the addition of clays and powders, it can be done.  Our Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe was inspired uses Natures Garden’s Moonlight Tuberose Fragrance Oil.  We were since the fragrance oil itself contains notes of both jasmine and vanilla, we were inclined to incorporate whole jasmine flowers as well as vanilla powder.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: A Closer Look at Some of the Ingredients

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Moonlight Tuberose Fragrance Oil

Before we begin, let’s take a look at the fragrance oil that we will be using.  This soapmaking project uses, what else, Moonlight Tuberose Fragrance Oil.  February 2018’s fragrance of the month. Tuberose essential oil is extremely expensive, and is used in the most exquisite fine fragrances.  We have done our very best to create a fragrance oil with the same aroma as this expensive essential oil; while adding complimentary notes to make this fragrance well-balanced.  Natures Garden’s moonlight tuberose fragrance begins with top notes of white pear and green apple;  followed by middle notes of tuberose, jasmine, lily of the valley, and ginger;  sitting on base notes of violet, ylang ylang, peach, vanilla, and fresh woods.  An NG Original fragrance!

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: French Green Powder

Next, let’s look at our first clay in this recipe.  French green clay powder is the most frequently used clay by health professionals and spas to treat skin conditions, to nourish the skin, and to remove impurities.  Green clay is light green in color when dry, but turns dark green when wetting agents are added.  French green clay is very nutritious for the skin. Due to the nutrients in French Green Clay, it is used in many cosmetics, soap, and skincare recipes.  French Green Clay powder can be added to both cold process soap and melt and pour soap recipes for increased cleansing ability and natural exfoliation.  French green clay will produce a natural green color in soap recipes.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Rose Clay Powder

We also used rose clay powder in this soap making recipe.  Rose clay, often referred to as pink clay, is a gentle, natural clay that contains kaolinite.  Rose clay is fabulous for most skin types; including sensitive skin.  Rose clay provides gentle exfoliation, helps to draw toxins from the skin, helps to increase circulation, reduces skin irritation, and helps to reduce inflammation.  Rose clay is typically used as an ingredient in cosmetics, soap, facial masks, and mud baths; providing skin-loving minerals, but also naturally coloring your finished products.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Kaolin White Clay Powder

Our final clay is the kaolin white clay powder.  Kaolin Clay, also called China Clay, is a white clay that is perfect for sensitive skin types.  Kaolin clay is commonly used to make mineral makeup such as foundation, eye shadow, and blush.  Natures Garden’s white clay can be used in formulations as a thickener, and added to bath bombs to harden them.   Like most clays, kaolin clay helps cleanse the skin; removing toxins.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Prepare Your ColorantsMoonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Prepare Your Colorants

First, we will prepare our colorants.  We will use two shades of green, a dark red, and a white soap for this recipe.  You will need to have a total of four disposable cups. You will also need to have your clays, vanilla powder, vegetable glycerin, and colorants out.  Once you have mixed all of the powders and colorants together, you can set each one aside, for now.  We will use them in a later step.

Colorant Amounts for the Light Green SoapColorant Amounts for the Light Green Soap:

10 grams Kaolin Clay Powder
20 grams Vegetable Glycerin
2 grams Neon Green FUN Soap Colorant
20 drops Lime Green FUN Soap Colorant

So, first, we will prepare the colorant for the light green soap.  In your first disposable cup, weigh out 10 grams of kaolin clay powder.  Then, add 20 grams of vegetable glycerin.  This will create a paste which will disperse better in your melted soap.  Next, add 2 grams of Natures Garden’s neon green FUN Soap Colorant along with 20 drops of the lime green soap dye to the cup containing the clay mixture.  Then, stir to mix the colorant completely with the clay mixture.

Colorant Amounts for the Red Soap PortionColorant Amounts for the Red Soap Portion:

10 grams of Rose Clay Powder
10 grams of Neon Pink FUN Soap Colorant
6 grams Tomato Red FUN Soap Colorant
22 grams of Vegetable Glycerin

Next, we will prepare the colorant for the red portion of soap.  You will need your second disposable cup.  Weigh out 10 grams of your rose clay powder.  Then, add 22 grams of vegetable glycerin.  Again, by creating a paste the colorant will disperse better in your melted soap.  Once your clay mixture is clump free, add 10 grams of Natures Garden’s neon pink FUN Soap Colorant.  In addition, add 6 grams of the tomato soap dye to the cup containing the clay mixture.  Then, stir to mix the colorant completely with the clay mixture.

Colorant Amounts for the Dark Green Soap Portion:

12 grams of French Green Clay Powder
21 grams of Vegetable Glycerin
7 grams Neon Green FUN Soap Colorant

Now, we will prepare the colorant for the dark green soap.  In your third disposable cup, weigh out 12 grams of green clay powder.  Then, add 21 grams of vegetable glycerin.  This will create a paste which will disperse better in your melted soap.  Finally, add 7 grams of Natures Garden’s neon green FUN Soap Colorant to the cup containing the clay mixture.  Then, stir to mix the colorant completely with the clay mixture.

Colorant Amounts for the White Soap PortionColorant Amounts for the White Soap Portion:

9 grams of Vanilla Powder
13 grams of Vegetable Glycerin

Lastly, we will prepare the vanilla powder for the white soap.  In your last disposable cup, weigh out 9 grams of vanilla powder.  Then, add 13 grams of vegetable glycerin.  This will create a paste which will disperse better in your melted soap.  Finally, stir to mix the vanilla powder and vegetable glycerin together.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Prepare the Soap

Now, we will begin preparing the soap that will be used in the soap loaf.  This soap will later be divided and added to our cups containing the colorants we created.  You will need your fragrance oil and your yogurt melt and pour soap base.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Prepare the SoapMoonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe Total Recipe Weights

1408 grams Yogurt Melt and Pour Soap
70 grams Moonlight Tuberose Fragrance Oil

First, you will need a total of 1408 grams of Natures Garden’s yogurt mp soap base.  To start, cut the soap into small cubes.  Then, use a microwave to melt the soap.  You want to melt the soap in 30-second intervals until it is melted completely.  Stir between each 30-second burst.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Separate the SoapMoonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Separate the Soap

At this time, you will need to separate the soap.  You will need the four cups containing the colorants that you prepared earlier.  To each of your cups, add 452 grams of the melted soap.  Stir the contents of each of your cups to fully blend the colorant with the melted yogurt soap.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Pouring the Soap Into the MoldMoonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Pouring the Soap Into the Mold

A melt and pour swirling technique makes pouring the soap into the mold a little bit different.  You will need to of the cups of soap and your square loaf mold.  It does not matter which colors you choose.  Now, place one cup in your left hand and the other in your right hand.  Pour the contents of each cup into the mold at the same time.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Prepare the Whipped Soap Frosting

Now, we will prepare the whipped soap frosting.  The whipped soap base will be used to top our soap loaf.  It will have a fluffy consistency.  We will use a hand mixer to fluff the soap base.  So, you will need your hand mixer.  We will also be adding vegetable glycerin along with yogurt melt and pour soap.  By adding melt and pour soap, the soap frosting will setup, making packaging your soap easier. Your frosting will harden instead of remaining soft and sticking to your packaging.

Whipped Soap Total Recipe Weights:

250 grams Yogurt Melt and Pour Soap Base
250 grams Whipped Soap Base
25 grams Vegetable Glycerin
25 grams Moonlight Tuberose Fragrance Oil
5 grams Vanilla Powder

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Whipping the Soap Base

First, weigh out 250 grams of the Natures Garden’s whipped soap base.  To the same bowl, add 25 grams of Moonlight Tuberose Fragrance Oil and 25 grams of your vegetable glycerin.  Then, use your hand mixer to fluff the whipped base to a fluffy frosting consistency.  Once you have fluffed your soap base, set this bowl aside, we will come back to it.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Prepare the Yogurt Melt and Pour Soap

Next, you will need an empty mixing bowl.  In this bowl, weigh out 250 grams of the yogurt melt and pour soap base.  Then, use a microwave oven to melt the mp soap.  You will want to melt your soap base in 30-second increments until the soap is completely melted an in a liquid state.  You will want to stir the soap base in between each 30- second burst.  Once the soap has melted, remove it from the microwave.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Mixing the Whipped Soap With the Yogurt Soap

Before we begin mixing the whipped soap base with the yogurt soap, I want to mention, you will need to move quickly as your soap frosting will setup very quickly.  So, add the melted yogurt soap base to the bowl containing the whipped soap.  Once again, you will need your hand mixer.  Finally, use your hand mixer to fluff the soap to that same frosting consistency.

Moonlight Tuberose Swirled Soap Recipe: Topping Your Soap Loaf

Finally, we will begin topping our soap loaf.  Add the whipped soap frosting to the top of your loaf.  You will want to top your soap in the same manner you would frost a cake.  Once you have added you soap frosting, we will add a few finishing touches.  Add a couple grams of the jasmine flowers.  Lastly, dust your soap with a tiny bit of the diamond dust mica pigment.  You will not need much of the diamond dust mica pigment, less than a gram will do.  Once your soap has completely setup, use your mitre box and cutter to slice the soap loaf just like you would cut a loaf of bread.

Once your soap is created, show us your finished soap!  We would love to see homemade mp soap!  Post pictures of your Moonlight Tuberose scented swirled soap or other creations on our Facebook page!  In addition, you can find Natures Garden on both our Twitter and Instagram pages @ngscents.
