Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe:  Coconut Oil 76

Coconut oil is one of the primary oils soapmakers use in their soaps.  However, it is also very popular in lip balm.  There are many types of coconut oil.  Most of the coconut oil sold and used is a melt point of 76 degrees, but there is a hydrogenated type that melts at 92 degrees.

Shea ButterChocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe:  Shea Butter

Shea butter is moisturizing and nourishing to the skin.  When used in soap making, shea butter will add a wonderful creamy lather, great conditioning properties, and some hardness to your soap. Shea butter is used in lip balms, lip gloss, soaps, lotions, scrubs, and other bath and body products.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe:  Vitamin E Oil

(Tocopherol T-50)-  The purest form of natural vitamin E available (from plant sources only). This is not tocopherol acetate (the form found in many vitamin E capsules).  Vitamin E is required in most cosmetic formulations in very small amounts  in order to prevent oils from oxidizing.  When fixed oils oxidize, they develop a very rancid smell, and can turn your products brown in color, which will ruin your finished products.  Prevent this from occurring by adding vitamin E to your formulations.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Creating a Double Boiler

Now, it is very important that you melt your oils slowly.  To do this, you need to melt them in a double boiler.  This will keep them from getting over cooked from the direct heat.  So, you will need to place a few inches of water in a pot on medium heat.  Once you weigh out your oils, you will place them in a smaller pot.  Your smaller pot will then be placed inside your larger pot.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Preparing Your Lip Balm Pots

In addition to creating a double boiler prior to starting, you also want to have your lip balm pots prepared.  Clean and sanitize your lip balm pots and place them out in front of you.  Set the lids aside, for now.  When creating this recipe, you will need a total of 10 pots.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Prepare the Strawberry Lip Balm

First we will prepare the strawberry lip balm.  This will be the bottom layer of your chocolate covered strawberries lip balm.  We will add flavor oil as well as color to this layer.  It will be flavored with Strawberry Sorbet Flavoring from Nature’s Garden.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Recipe Weights for the Strawberry Layer

13 grams White Beeswax
24 grams Coconut Oil 76
10 grams Shea Butter
12 grams Cocoa Butter-Golden Natural
1 gram Vitamin E Oil
20 drops Strawberry Sorbet Flavoring Oil
5 drops Red Hot Momma Lip Tint

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Weighing the Ingredients for the Strawberry Layer

First, we will be weighing the ingredients for the strawberry layer.  So, in a small pot, weigh out 13 grams of the white beeswax, 24 grams of your coconut oil 76,10 grams of your shea butter, and 12 grams of the golden natural cocoa butter.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Melting the Ingredients for the Strawberry Layer

Then, use the double boiler you created to melt the oil, wax, and butters.  You want to stir the contents of the pot occasionally so that they do not overheat.  Since it is a small amount, the ingredients should melt pretty quickly.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Adding the Color and Flavor Oil

Once everything is melted, we will be adding the color and flavor oil.  So, we will need our Natures Garden Strawberry Sorbet Flavoring along with our Red Hot Momma Lip Tint.  We will also be adding the vitamin E oil.  Next, add 20 drops of the Strawberry Sorbet Flavor Oil and 5 drops of the Red Hot Momma.  Then, add 1 gram of your natural vitamin e oil.  Finally, stir to incorporate all of the ingredients.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Putting the Strawberry Lip Balm into the Jars

When putting the strawberry lip balm into the jars, we will only be filling them about halfway.  This recipe will create about 10 of the 10 ml lip balm containers.  So, use a disposable pipette to fill half of the 10 ml lip balm container.  Allow the strawberry layer of your lip balm to setup before moving to the next step.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Prepare the Chocolate Lip Balm

Next, we will prepare the chocolate lip balm layer.  This layer will be poured directly on top of the strawberry lip balm layer.  This layer however, will be flavored with real chocolate instead of a lip balm flavoring.

13 grams White Beeswax
24 grams Coconut Oil 76
10 grams Shea Butter
12 grams Cocoa Butter-Golden Natural
1 gram Vitamin E Oil

3 Dark Chocolate Wafers

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Weighing the Ingredients for the Chocolate Layer

First, we will need to weigh out a few of our ingredients.  So, in a small bowl weigh out 13 grams of your white beeswax, 24 grams of your coconut oil 76, 10 grams of the shea butter, and finally, 12 grams of the golden natural cocoa butter. The remaining ingredients will be added after the oils, butters, and waxes are melted.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Melting the Ingredients for the Chocolate Layer

Next, you will, once again, use a double boiler to melt the ingredients.  So, fill your larger pan with a few inches of water.  Then, place your weighed out ingredients into a smaller pot.  Finally, place your smaller pot inside your larger pot and begin melting your ingredients.  You will want to stir occasionally until all of your oils, butters, and waxes are melted.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Adding the Chocolate

Now, you will be adding the chocolate.  So, to the pot containing your oils and butters, add the three dark chocolate wafers.  Then, slowly mix them into your melted lip balm.  This will give your lip balm both a chocolate taste and aroma.  In addition, add 1 gram of Vitamin E Oil and stir.

Next, use a disposable pipette to fill the remaining portion of the lip balm container.  You do not want to fill the lip balm container completely.  Since the lid indents slightly, you want to make sure you allow for that.  Once you have filled your container with the chocolate lip balm, allow it to setup.  When your lip balm has set up, place a lid on top.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe: Using Your Lip Balm

Once your lip balm has setup, it is ready to use right away.  Your lip balm will begin with the chocolate lip balm.  Once you have used the top layer, you will then make your way to the strawberry lip balm.

In addition, why not make your own chocolate covered strawberries.  Chocolate covered strawberries are one of my favorite treats.  Here is a recipe for chocolate dipped strawberries from Betty Crocker.  They look amazing!  I might just be making these this weekend!
