9 Soy Candle Recipes 9 Soy Candle Recipes

If you are interested in candle making and are new to the craft, creating a candle may seem like an easy process. Well, it is easy, once you have done some research and Nature’s Garden can help you out. We have 9 soy candle recipes that use the three types of soy wax that we carry. These recipes are fun and creative and are easy to follow. Not only will you see that making your own candle can be easy, but making the world smell good is a very important job!

There are many factors that go into making a candle that will not only burn properly but will have a good hot and cold throw. Once you start doing research on candle making, then it can seem a bit overwhelming. What type of wick do you use? Which one burns the best? What type of wax do I want to use? I know I want soy wax, but what kind of soy wax? What does it mean melt point? When do I add the fragrance? How much color do I add? Not to worry, folks! Nature’s Garden is here for you and can answer all those questions for you.

9 Soy Candle Recipes: The Soy Waxes9 Soy Candle Recipes: The Soy Waxes

Not all soy wax is created equal. There are differences in the melt temperatures, hot and cold throws, and in appearances. Before we get started on our soy candle recipes, let me familiarize you with the different soy waxes we have. We have three types that we will discuss: NG 100% Soy Wax, Golden Foods Soy Wax 444 and Golden Foods Soy Wax 464.

As we all know, Soy Wax is produced from soybeans. It is a pure and natural vegetable wax that is considered kosher. Not only is this wax non-toxic, but it is also biodegradable. In fact, soy wax is very environmentally friendly and is made from a renewable resource. Candles made from soy wax are very clean burning. Something that is of importance in this day and age.  There is a reduction in soot, and due to the makeup of soy itself, the burn time of a soy wax increases. Soy Wax candles will burn slower and cooler compared to a straight paraffin wax candle.

All of Nature’s Garden soy waxes are sold in flake style. Most people find this type easier to work with. Granulated waxes have a tendency to be messier. They are all-natural so you can rest assured that you are going to have a clean burning candle in your home and for your customers. You will also note, that your finished candles may have a rough exterior. They may not look smooth and creamy. Well, it is a natural wax, therefore you will have a more natural finish. If this is not the look you would like it can be easily solved with a few tricks to help give your candles a more professional look!

9 Soy Candle Recipes:  NG 100% Soy Wax (GF 415)9 Soy Candle Recipes:  NG 100% Soy Wax 415

NG 100% Soy Wax 415 is straight soy. There are no additives to enhance the hot or cold throw. Therefore, soy wax is perfect in massage candles or any other type of recipe that is applied to the body. The melt point for 415 Soy is 120-125 degrees Fahrenheit. This higher melt point allows this wax to carry a higher fragrance load. You can also blend this soy wax with other waxes such as beeswax, paraffin or microcrystalline waxes.

9 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 444 9 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 444

Our next wax is our Golden Foods Soy Wax 444. This is a popular seller here at Nature’s Garden. So what makes this wax different? Well, there are soy based additives added to this wax. That still makes it a natural wax, however, these additives help increase pour temperature, helps reduce frosting issues and give a smoother finish to your candle’s appearance. The scent throw, both hot and cold, are improved also. You may also blend this wax with other waxes such as paraffin or microcrystalline waxes. The 444 Soy Wax also has a higher melt point and can hold up to 12% scent per pound, making a stronger scented candle.  However, you should always test as not all fragrance oils can be used at this percentage and may seep.

9 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 4649 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 464

Lastly, we have our Golden Foods Soy Wax 464. This is a very popular candle wax. While this wax is similar to our Golden Foods Soy Wax 444, the main difference will be the melt point. The 464 Soy wax has a lower melt point and this allows for better glass adhesion in the finished candle. Another difference would be the maximum scent load for this wax which is 10-12% of scent per pound of wax. We do suggest keeping the fragrance percent at 10 to reduce the possibility of fragrance oil seepage.

Before you get started on creating any of our recipes, follow this link to How to Make Soy Candles. This is a free candle class that can be downloaded or printed. In this class, you can learn about wicks, pour lines, scenting the wax, pour temps and more. And now that we are familiar with the different types of soy waxes, let’s move on to our soy candle recipes and get you inspired to start candle creating!

Base Notes: pine

How Do Our Customers Use Citronella Fragrance Oil?

There are a variety of craft recipes that can be created using our citronella scent.  First, many of our customers use Citronella Fragrance Oil in their homemade lotions, creams and body sprays.  Our maximum recommended usage rate for these type of products is 5%.  Room scenters can use up to 50% in homemade potpourri, reed diffusers, oil burners, and incense projects.  Of course, strongly scented aroma beads can also be created.

Candle crafters can add up to 10% of our Citronella Fragrance Oil in their homemade candle or wax tart recipes when using a paraffin wax or vegetable wax.  If you would like to color your candles or homemade tarts we suggest dying it green.  You can use two drops of green Spectrum Liquid Candle dye per four pounds.   If color blocks are more up your alley,  you can shred a small amount of a green color block into your melted wax.  Since we are often asked about using crayons as a candle colorant, crayons should not be used as a replacement for candle dyes in your candles.  They will clog your wick.  Gel wax is not compatible with our straight citronella scent.  However, if you are wanting to make a citronella candle using get wax, try our Lime Citronella Fragrance Oil.

Those making soap can use this citronella fragrance oil at a maximum recommendation of 5% to create wonderfully scented handcrafted soaps.  It can be used in cold process soap, hot process, or melt and pour soaps.  Our cold process soap testing results for this citronella scent found no ricing, no acceleration, no separation, and no discoloration after cure.  It maintains a good scent retention.  When making other other bath and body products such as bath oils, bath bombs, and bath gels, we have found our Citronella Fragrance Oil works great when using a maximum recommendation of 5% fragrance oil.  To color body products we recommend that you use green soap colorant in the amount to achieve the shade that satisfies you. Never use candle dye in any body products.

citronella repelsCitronella and Mosquitoes

Summer time, the period of the year when we all enjoy outdoor festivities.  Whether they be parties, cookouts, hiking, gardening, or just relaxing by the pool; we find reasons to be outside.  We love the gorgeous weather and the warming sun rays.  However, with the fun in the sun that we all seek, with it also comes the dreaded mosquitoes.

When the weather gets warm, these uninvited pesky critters seem to always show up in droves.  Invading not only our space, but feeding off us and our families.  The results of their feast, itchy, red, swollen bumps on our skin.

Mosquitoes have been in existence some 170 million years.  In the United States, there are currently over 175 different species accounted for.  It is safe to say that they are not going to be going any where soon, but there are measures that we can take to help ward off these insects.

Citronella has been known to repel mosquitoes for a long time. Burning citronella candles around the yard or applying bug repelling spray to ourselves can usually do the trick.  But have you ever wondered how this works exactly?

Just like a primal animal, mosquitoes are on the hunt for one thing: FOOD.  And, we are that food source.  Drawn to carbon dioxide (from our exhaling) uric acid (from our blood), and lactic acid (from our sweat glands), insects like mosquitoes are able to smell us up to an amazing 164 feet away.  Once those delectable scents are picked up by the mosquitoes, they are then able to locate us to feed.

It is commonly thought that the scent of citronella repels mosquitoes away.  In fact, studies have shown that when the citronella aroma is in an environment, mosquitoes will land around 40% less times than when it is not present.  But, the fact is mosquitoes will still land.  This is why citronella does not necessarily repel.

Instead, citronella masks.  What this means is that when the scent of citronella (whether by means of a candle or a body spray) is present the 3 most common drawing factors of mosquitoes (carbon dioxide, uric acid, and lactic acid) are covered.  It is almost as if the mosquitoes no longer have the ability to sense us anymore.  And, since they cannot smell us, they will move on to “sweatier pastures” so to speak.

Sure, any of your local grocery stores or super markets have aisles of outdoor summer time displays hosting many different bug repelling products that you can purchase.  You however can make your very own insect repelling/masking items right from your home.  You will know exactly what is in the product, and you will also save money by doing it yourself.

Natures Garden currently has four different citronella oils available.  There is the straight citronella scent, or the citronella java essential oil.  Both of these oils can be viewed by clicking on the individual link.  For those of you that do not like how the scent of straight citronella smells, we also have citronella options for you.  Citronella Berry fragrance oil is a sweeter version of citronella.  This fragrance contains the essential oil of citronella with the combined fruity notes of strawberry, mandarin, and raspberry.  There is also Lime Citronella fragrance oil.  This wonderful fragrance oil is the combination of essential oil of citronella and notes of lemon, fresh lime, and white flowers.

Now, if you are interested in viewing possible candle and body products that you can make with these scents, here are three of Natures Gardens finest bug repelling recipes.  By clicking on the link, you will be able to see the recipe.  Each recipe has the step by step instruction as well as all of the items listed that you will need to make them.
