9 Soy Candle Recipes 9 Soy Candle Recipes

If you are interested in candle making and are new to the craft, creating a candle may seem like an easy process. Well, it is easy, once you have done some research and Nature’s Garden can help you out. We have 9 soy candle recipes that use the three types of soy wax that we carry. These recipes are fun and creative and are easy to follow. Not only will you see that making your own candle can be easy, but making the world smell good is a very important job!

There are many factors that go into making a candle that will not only burn properly but will have a good hot and cold throw. Once you start doing research on candle making, then it can seem a bit overwhelming. What type of wick do you use? Which one burns the best? What type of wax do I want to use? I know I want soy wax, but what kind of soy wax? What does it mean melt point? When do I add the fragrance? How much color do I add? Not to worry, folks! Nature’s Garden is here for you and can answer all those questions for you.

9 Soy Candle Recipes: The Soy Waxes9 Soy Candle Recipes: The Soy Waxes

Not all soy wax is created equal. There are differences in the melt temperatures, hot and cold throws, and in appearances. Before we get started on our soy candle recipes, let me familiarize you with the different soy waxes we have. We have three types that we will discuss: NG 100% Soy Wax, Golden Foods Soy Wax 444 and Golden Foods Soy Wax 464.

As we all know, Soy Wax is produced from soybeans. It is a pure and natural vegetable wax that is considered kosher. Not only is this wax non-toxic, but it is also biodegradable. In fact, soy wax is very environmentally friendly and is made from a renewable resource. Candles made from soy wax are very clean burning. Something that is of importance in this day and age.  There is a reduction in soot, and due to the makeup of soy itself, the burn time of a soy wax increases. Soy Wax candles will burn slower and cooler compared to a straight paraffin wax candle.

All of Nature’s Garden soy waxes are sold in flake style. Most people find this type easier to work with. Granulated waxes have a tendency to be messier. They are all-natural so you can rest assured that you are going to have a clean burning candle in your home and for your customers. You will also note, that your finished candles may have a rough exterior. They may not look smooth and creamy. Well, it is a natural wax, therefore you will have a more natural finish. If this is not the look you would like it can be easily solved with a few tricks to help give your candles a more professional look!

9 Soy Candle Recipes:  NG 100% Soy Wax (GF 415)9 Soy Candle Recipes:  NG 100% Soy Wax 415

NG 100% Soy Wax 415 is straight soy. There are no additives to enhance the hot or cold throw. Therefore, soy wax is perfect in massage candles or any other type of recipe that is applied to the body. The melt point for 415 Soy is 120-125 degrees Fahrenheit. This higher melt point allows this wax to carry a higher fragrance load. You can also blend this soy wax with other waxes such as beeswax, paraffin or microcrystalline waxes.

9 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 444 9 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 444

Our next wax is our Golden Foods Soy Wax 444. This is a popular seller here at Nature’s Garden. So what makes this wax different? Well, there are soy based additives added to this wax. That still makes it a natural wax, however, these additives help increase pour temperature, helps reduce frosting issues and give a smoother finish to your candle’s appearance. The scent throw, both hot and cold, are improved also. You may also blend this wax with other waxes such as paraffin or microcrystalline waxes. The 444 Soy Wax also has a higher melt point and can hold up to 12% scent per pound, making a stronger scented candle.  However, you should always test as not all fragrance oils can be used at this percentage and may seep.

9 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 4649 Soy Candle Recipes: Golden Foods Soy Wax 464

Lastly, we have our Golden Foods Soy Wax 464. This is a very popular candle wax. While this wax is similar to our Golden Foods Soy Wax 444, the main difference will be the melt point. The 464 Soy wax has a lower melt point and this allows for better glass adhesion in the finished candle. Another difference would be the maximum scent load for this wax which is 10-12% of scent per pound of wax. We do suggest keeping the fragrance percent at 10 to reduce the possibility of fragrance oil seepage.

Before you get started on creating any of our recipes, follow this link to How to Make Soy Candles. This is a free candle class that can be downloaded or printed. In this class, you can learn about wicks, pour lines, scenting the wax, pour temps and more. And now that we are familiar with the different types of soy waxes, let’s move on to our soy candle recipes and get you inspired to start candle creating!

Massage candles are incredibly popular these days. Sometimes they are called lotion candles and can have any type of addition made to them. Rub the warmed wax into your skin and feel the difference between regular lotion and warmed lotion! Your skin will feel luxuriously soft and moisture will be locked in! We scented our candle in relaxing NG Cashmere & Silk Type fragrance oil. First up we have our Candy Cane Fragrance Oil. This is a very popular fragrance at Christmas time! This isn’t just a straight up peppermint scent. This fragrance is peppermint, spearmint, with a touch of strawberries, eucalyptus and a nice soft background of vanilla.

Candy Cane fragrance worked perfectly in our cold process soap testing! There was no ricing, separation, or accelerating! However, we did experience some discoloring to a brown. You can use Vanilla White Color Stabilizer to help prevent the oxidation of the fragrance. Also, the scent retention was strong and true throughout the cure time!

This fragrance oil is body safe and would be perfect in all bath and body products. We have a wonderful recipe that uses our Candy Cane Fragrance Oil. Check out our sweet Candy Cane Candle. This candle has pretty pink, red and white layers with a fluffy white topping and some sweet little swirled wafer embeds sitting atop the fluff!

Popular Christmas Fragrances: Christmas Cabernet Fragrance OilPopular Christmas Fragrances: Christmas Cabernet Fragrance Oil

This next fragrance oil is lovely all year long, not just at Christmas time! Christmas Cabernet fragrance oil has a true Cabernet scent of cherries and oak. With hints of ginger, vanilla and wine, this is a perfect fragrance to get you into the holiday spirit.

Christmas Cabernet is a soaper’s dream! During our cold process soap testing, there was no ricing, accelerating, or separating. Although it did turn a shade of olive brown, using a Vanilla White Color Stabilizer may help prevent this. Also, the scent retention was incredibly strong even after its cure time. This fragrance is also body safe and makes some wonderful smelling bath and body products. It also worked equally well in all soy and vegetable waxes.

If you enjoy making bath and body products, check out our Wine Sugar Scrub recipe. Sugar scrubs are incredibly popular and easy to make. A few simple ingredients such as sugar, olive oil, cocoa butter and grapeseed oil, is all it takes to make up nine 4 oz. jars of this yummy smelling scrub! Your skin will smell amazing and will also feel soft and smooth afterward.

Christmas Thyme fragrance oil is perfect for those that want a pine fragrance that isn’t overwhelming! Definite top notes of cinnamon, bayberries and apples along with the undertones of pine and thyme. A perfect balance that smells fresh and crisp!

Christmas Thyme is one of the few fragrances that is not body safe, therefore we did no cold process soap testing, nor any testing in bath and body products. However, this is a wonderful scent for those looking for candle fragrances that have wonderful cold and hot throws. This fragrance also makes a perfect room freshener or potpourri and incense.

If you are looking for a recipe to create for those that like potpourri, check out our Christmas Liquid Potpourri Recipe. This recipe uses our DPG solvent and of course, Christmas Thyme fragrance oil. Popular Christmas Fragrances: Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins Fragrance OilPopular Christmas Fragrances: Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins Fragrance Oil

What in the world is a Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins? This fragrance oil by Natures Garden was inspired by one of our favorite movies of all times – “ELF”.  At one point in the movie, Buddy mentions that he feels like a “Cotton headed ninny muggin”; AKA…an ELF Airhead.  This made us think, “What would a cotton headed ninny muggin smell like?”  Cotton headed ninny muggin fragrance oil begins with sweet, buttery, creamy coconut and vanilla frosting; leading to middle notes of powdery heliotrope and spicy hints; and sits on a powerful vanilla base. A very yummy smelling cotton head you will be!

Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins worked perfectly in our cold process soap testing! With no ricing, accelerating, separating, it soaped beautifully. However, it does discolor to a chocolate brown. The addition of some Vanilla White Color Stabilizer would be perfect to help prevent that. This fragrance oil also tested positive in room fresheners, all candle waxes and in bath and body products!

Have you ever thought of making your own play dough? It’s actually an easy craft that the kids can help out making! With some flour, vegetable oil and warm water, you can have some fun creating when it gets too yucky to play outside! Our Scented Play Dough recipe is made with five different colors and five different Christmas fragrances, one being Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins! This is must try if your kids are looking for something fun to do!

Popular Christmas Fragrances: Country Christmas Fragrance OilPopular Christmas Fragrances: Country Christmas Fragrance Oil

Our Country Christmas fragrance oil is a truly fantastic scent that is a blend of bayberries, cranberries, and apples, with spicy nuances of nutmeg and cloves with a top note of orange zests. This is another fragrance oil that makes me picture an old fashioned Christmas in a warm, cozy farmhouse or cabin.

Country Christmas fragrance oil was not tested in cold process soap due to the fact that the maximum body safeness level was very low. If you do choose to soap with it, please try to stick to the guideline of the percentage we have allowed for. However, this fragrance is perfect in candles, wax melts, and any type of room freshening recipe!

With a country Christmas comes pictures of rustic decorations, home smells and family gatherings. We developed an easy decoration that uses our Country Christmas fragrance! Our Scented Twine Christmas Ornaments are a fun, easy craft to create! Simply wrap twine around an inflated balloon, coat the twine in scented glue, allow to dry. When the twine has hardened, you can pop the balloon and you’re left with a yummy smelling, rustic ornament that will give your tree a down-home look!

Our Favorite Christmas Crafts: How To Have a Stress Free ChristmasOur Favorite Christmas Crafts: How To Have a Stress Free Christmas

Most of us in today’s world, have the idea that Christmas has to be picture perfect. We watch the movies on the Hallmark Channel and expect our Christmas to be just like on TV.

However, we don’t live our lives scripted. It’s always important to remember that the Christmas tree doesn’t have to look like Martha Stewart decorated it. Our Christmas cookies do not need to look like they came straight out of Bon Appetit magazine. Christmas is a beautiful time to simply spend with loved ones. Those will be the memories that your children can cherish and remember when they grow older. It’s not about how perfect the ornaments were hung on the tree. It’s about the memory you have of each ornament that you hang on those branches. It isn’t about how perfectly edged the icing was on the cookies. It’s about how awesome those cookies tasted no matter how much icing Junior glopped onto the snowman shaped cookie.

Enjoy your holidays! Take some shortcuts when it comes to having friends or family over. It’s okay to have something that’s not made from scratch! Homemade gifts don’t have to say you don’t have the funds to buy elaborate gifts. If you create things for certain people in mind, then you have given something to somebody that says, “I took my time and love to make you something I knew you would enjoy.” That type of Christmas is perfect in every way. Follow this link to read up on how to have a stress free Christmas before you start running in a million directions!

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe

There is something about Autumn and the holidays that make you want to create a warm, cozy home. I suppose it is similar to hibernating. If you are going to spend most of your time indoors during the cold weather, then making your home a snug place to come home to is your hibernation time. There is nothing better than walking in the front door of your home to warmth, family, pets and good smells to make you feel safe and happy to be there! Nature’s Garden’s Pecan Pie Wax Melts recipe will definitely give your home a wonderful, inviting smell of warm butter, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted pecans.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: A History of Pecan PiePecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: A History of Pecan Pie

While any information on how the Pecan Pie came to be is a little sketchy, it is for certain, that it started out as one type of dessert similar to the ingredients that were used and then evolved into a true Southern dessert using staple ingredients that were native to the area. The basis of this pie is sugar, butter, syrup (pre-Karo syrup days, it was cane syrup) and eggs. This is the basic recipe for Chess Pie, which has its own origin. However, the addition of pecans and whoever thought of adding it is a mystery that will never be solved, but let’s thank whoever felt like spicing up their dessert! A personal favorite addition to my pecan pie? Chocolate drizzle and a dollop of ice vanilla ice cream! Mmmmm!  However, our inspiration for this project came from these pecan mini pies from Sugar Hero.  While, of course, our wax melts aren’t edible, her mini pecan pies are simply AMAZING! So, if this wax tart recipe, and sent leaves your belly grumbling, give her recipe a try.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Let’s Talk Ingredients

So before we move onto making our Pecan Pie Wax Melts, let’s familiarize ourselves with some of the ingredients we are using.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Pillar of Bliss Candle WaxPecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax

So anytime a recipe calls for a wax melt,  we will always use our Pillar of Bliss. The reason for that is that Pillar of Bliss is the best wax when we are using a mold for our creation. This wax has an easy release from the mold since it hardens up nicely. Most waxes, such as soy, are often too soft and can often difficult to get out of the mold. Pillar of Bliss is a granulated blend of soy wax (more than 50 percent) and paraffin wax. This wax has excellent scent retention as well as amazing hot and cold throws.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Joy Wax Candle WaxPecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Joy Wax Candle Wax

The next wax we will be using is our Joy Wax Candle Wax. This wax is also a blend of soy, veggie waxes, and paraffin. Joy Wax also has wonderful scent retention along with awesome hot and cold throws. Any time you would like to add a fluffy topping to any of your candle creations, this wax is perfect for that! As you will see, it can be whipped up into a puffy cloud of fluff! It’s perfect for use in dessert candles or wax melts!

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Granny’s Pecan Pie Fragrance Oil

This is one of my favorite home scents to use for the fall (or anytime actually). It has a warm aroma of brown sugar, vanilla, butter, and roasted pecans. This fragrance oil does amazing in all candle waxes that were tested. It also did very well when we tested in Cold Process soap. While it did discolor to a chocolate brown (which I think is a perfect color for a soap when using this fragrance) there was no acceleration, or ricing! It did, however, separate, yet it reabsorbed with no problem. I am sure that this would be a perfect fragrance to add to your fall/holiday line of products.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Other Ingredients and Equipment You will Need

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Before You Get Started

Before you get started on your wax melts, it is always good to prepare your work area. Clean your work area and also your equipment that you will be using. Make sure that you have all your ingredients and utensils handy and within reaching distance. These few steps will help ensure that your creating will run smoothly and uninterrupted. If this is your first time working with candle wax, you might like to familiarize yourself with how to make candles. Follow this link to get a quick rundown on melting and pour temperatures and also proper temperatures for adding fragrances.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing Your Double Boiler

The first step before starting your wax melts will be to set up your double boiler. If you know the process of setting up a double boiler, you can move on to the next step of prepping your wax. However, if you are unfamiliar with a double boiler, we can explain to you how it is done in a few easy steps.

First, you will need a large pot or even an old cake pan for the outside part of your double boiler. Place this onto your heating element. This can be your stove top or even a hot plate. Next, pour about 3 inches of water into the pot or pan. Then, you will need a smaller pot or a pouring pot, for the inside part of the double boiler. As a side note, it isn’t really necessary, however, it is so much easier pouring melted wax into the molds if your pot has a pouring spout. That is why a pouring pitcher is ideal as the inner part of your double boiler. Next, turn your burner on to medium heat to allow the water to warm up as you are preparing your wax.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing the  Wax for the BasesPecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing the  Wax for the Bases

First, you will be preparing the bases of the wax melts. For this step, you will need the Pillar of Bliss Wax. On your scale, set your pouring pot and tare out the weight. Weigh out 325 grams of Pillar of Bliss Wax.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Adding the candle dyes and fragrance oilPecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Adding the candle dyes and fragrance oil

Next, place the pouring pot into the larger part of your double boiler and allow the wax to melt to the proper temperature, stirring occasionally. While you are waiting for the wax to melt, you can weigh out the fragrance oil. To a small dish, weigh out 32 grams of Granny’s Pecan Pie fragrance oil. You can set this aside for the moment. Once your wax has reached the correct melting point, remove the pouring pot from the heat and you can now add in the liquid candle dyes. We are going for a pecan color so you will add in 3 drops of yellow liquid candle dye and 4 drops of brown liquid candle dye. Stir this well to incorporate the color thoroughly.

Once the wax has reached the correct temperature for the fragrance oil, you can now add that, once again stirring well to completely disperse the oil throughout the wax.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Pouring the WaxPecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Pouring the Wax

Now that your melted wax is colored and scented, you will be pouring the wax into their molds. With the silicone mini muffin mold in front of you, carefully fill each mold to the top with the melted wax. Once these are all filled, allow them to set up completely until they have cooled. Pop them out of the muffin cavities and place them on a piece of wax paper. You can set these aside for the moment.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing the  Pecan EmbedsPecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing the  Pecan Embeds

Next, you will be preparing the Pecan Embeds. For the embeds, you will notice we are using a mold from Flexible Molds. This company offers many different types of molds to fit any of your soap or candle making needs. They are very durable molds, that will last you a long time! So, to your pouring pot weigh out 50 grams of Pillar of Bliss candle Wax and place it into the larger pot of heated water. Melt this wax down to the proper temperature. While you are waiting for this wax to melt, weigh out 5 grams of Granny’s Pecan Pie fragrance oil into a small bowl and set this aside for the moment.

For the color of the pecans, you will only need a small amount. So, using a toothpick to add the color, swirl in a small amount of yellow and brown liquid candle dye. The pecans do not have to be the same exact shade as the bases of the wax melts. It is okay if they are a bit lighter. Stir the liquid color until it is fully blended. Now you can add in the pre-weighed fragrance oil and stir this well also. Next, you will pour the melted wax into the pecan embeds mold carefully. Once again, you will let these set up until cool before removing them from the mold. Since the mold has only 6 cavities, you will need to remelt any of the wax remaining in the pot to pour the second set of pecans.  Set the pecans aside on a piece of wax paper until later.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing the Chocolate DrizzlePecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing the Chocolate Drizzle

Next, you will be preparing the chocolate drizzle. For this, you will need the joy wax. In your pouring pot, weigh out 20 grams of Joy wax. Melt the wax completely and then add in 2 grams of Granny’s Pecan Pie fragrance oil. Then, using the toothpick method, add in both black and brown liquid candle dye. Stir this well to fully incorporate the fragrance and color.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Drizzling the Chocolate

Now, you will drizzle the chocolate wax over the bases of your pecan pies. So, using a spoon, dip it into the wax and holding it above the bases, drizzle the wax back and forth over the pies until you have used all the wax, or until you are satisfied with your drizzle.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Preparing the Whipped Topping

The next step is preparing the whipped topping of the pies. As a side note, if you are using the same pouring pot as in the previous steps, you will want to clean out the pot completely using paper towels. This is only necessary since the whipped topping will be white with no color. Any leftover colored wax may cause your wax to have a tint. So, in your cleaned out pouring pot, weigh out 120 grams of Joy Wax. Place into the heated water and melt, stirring occasionally.

Pecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Creating the whipped toppingPecan Pie Wax Melts Recipe: Creating the whipped topping

So once the joy wax has completely melted, remove the pouring pot from the heat source and add in 12 grams of Granny’s Pecan Pie fragrance and stir this well to combine. For this step, you can use a mixer or even just a spoon. As your wax is cooling down, it will begin to thicken. As it begins to thicken, mix the wax to create a whipped topping consistency. Once you have your wax to whipped consistency, place a dollop on top of each cupcake base.

Next, place a pecan embed on top of each whip topped pie. Press down so the embed adheres to the top snugly. This recipe creates 12 wax melts. Pecan Pie Wax Melts are ready to use! Simply place one in your wax burner and enjoy the warm, comforting aroma that will fill your home!
