Holiday Pomegranate Air FreshenersHoliday Pomegranate Air Fresheners

Everybody enjoys freshening up the house with a nice candle or some room spray. We would like to take it to the next level and show you how you can make your very own homemade air freshener for the end of the year! We have many recipes like this on our website that can be used for any day, but the one we will be sharing with you today is for the upcoming holiday season. Some of the others on the website are also holiday themed, but this is a brand new recipe of ours. We will be talking about our Holiday Pomegranate Air Freshener that will leave the room smelling absolutely delicious and reminiscent of Christmas!

Ingredients Found at Natures Garden:

Aroma Beads
Holiday Pomegranate Fragrance Oil
Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye- Red
Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye- Black
Air Freshener Jars and Lids

Other Ingredients & Equipment You’ll Need:
Ziploc Bag- Gallon Size

Aroma Beads

Natures Garden aroma beads are perfect for all of the air fresheners you want to create. They are versatile and can be melted, scented, colored, and layered. These are fragrance-absorbing aroma beads that hold 30% of the fragrance oil applied to them. They add a great addition to potpourri, sachets, and organza bags. They can be placed in smelly jelly jars as well. However, do not add them to a heated potpourri burner because they should not be held near a flame or put in any sort of heat source. Naturally, without a heat source, the scent throw will not be as strong as a candle, for example. Aroma bead air fresheners work best in smaller areas because the scent throw hinges on the circulation of the air. By adding fragrance to the beads, you can freshen up the scent in your closets, your car, shoes, vents, lockers, bathrooms and so much more!

Adding the Aroma BeadsAdding the Aroma Beads

This recipe only contains six steps, and is super easy to follow along with. To begin, weigh out one pound of the Aroma Beads. We are going to add them to a one gallon sized Ziploc bag. We will be using a larger bag because it will make the process of mixing everything together easier as we add more to it.

Incorporating the Fragrance OilIncorporating the Fragrance Oil

Next, we are going to weigh out two ounces of the Holiday Pomegranate Fragrance Oil. The fragrance is the most important part of the air fresheners, since having a good scent is the point of making one of these. This fragrance will make your air freshener smell like Christmas time. It has notes of pomegranate, sparkling citrus, dewberry, blackberry, iris, jasmine, sheer musk, sandalwood, and red cassis. The word cassis means black currant, and it is popularly used in wine.

Combining the Aroma Beads and Fragrance OilCombining the Aroma Beads and Fragrance Oil

After weighing out the holiday pomegranate fragrance oil, add it to the same Ziploc bag as the aroma beads are in. This will combine the ingredients together that are necessary to form your holiday air freshener. Carefully pour it into the bag, so as not to create a mess. It cannot get into the seal part of the Ziploc bag, because it will make the next step difficult or impossible.

Adding the Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye ColorantsAdding the Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye Colorants

With the aroma beads and the holiday pomegranate fragrance oil combined, it is time for the third step. We are going to add six drops of spectrum liquid candle dye in the red shade. We will also add only one drop of the black spectrum liquid candle dye to the Ziploc bag.

Mixing All of the Ingredients TogetherMixing All of the Ingredients Together

Once both have been added, seal the bag completely. Shake the bag until the aroma beads, holiday pomegranate fragrance oil, red spectrum liquid candle dye, and black spectrum liquid candle dye are mixed evenly. Once this step is complete, you will have your colored aroma beads!

Pouring Aroma Beads into the JarPouring Your Aroma Beads Into the Jars

The aroma beads are now colored the dark red color that we wanted from the start. Pour these colored aroma beads into the six jars you are going to use. You need to allow them to set up completely before placing them in the area that you wish to freshen up.

Allowing the Air Freshener to Set UpAllowing the Air Freshener to Set Up

Allow the beads to absorb the Holiday Pomegranate Fragrance Oil in the jars before putting lids on them. It is going to take approximately 24 hours for the fragrance to become completely absorbed in the aroma beads.

Setting Up Your Finished ProductSetting Up Your Finished Product

Finally, our last step is to place seals and lids on top of the six air freshener jars. The lids we used are given in the Natures Garden Air Freshener Plastic Jar and Lid Set. We sell them in units of ten, which makes it easier on you to be able to create multiple fresheners at once.

We hope that you love this homemade Holiday Air Freshener Recipe as much as we do! The recipe is super simple to follow and makes a nice addition to many areas in the home!

Other Types of Holiday Air Fresheners

At Natures Garden, we have plenty of other air fresheners that can be made from a lot of our fragrance oils! Let’s take a look at a few other ways to scent your home this holiday season!

Gingerbread Aroma Bead Air Fresheners

Gingerbread Aroma Beads Air Fresheners

We have another holiday themed one, which is our Gingerbread Aroma Beads Air Freshener. This is another one that you can make this holiday season either for around the house or to use it as a Christmas gift. This recipe creates six to seven air fresheners and it only takes four ingredients to make. These are aroma beads, Gingerbread Fragrance Oil, brown spectrum liquid candle dye, and our one ounce Mica pigment. This glittery pigment comes in either gold or a silver diamond dust, whichever you prefer to use.

The gingerbread man shapes are created by using cookie cutters, which fits right in with the Christmas season! All you need to do is mix the candle dye and the fragrance oil in a Ziploc bag. Shake it gently. Then, add your aroma beads to the same bag and shake all of it together once again. Keep shaking until all of the liquid is evenly dispersed among the aroma beads. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours to allow the beads to fully absorb the fragrance oil. After waiting, pour the mixture into the cookie cutters and bake in the oven five to six minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Metallic Scented StonesMetallic Scented Stones

Next, you can create the Metallic Scented Stones. These stones are easy to make and use both arrowroot powder and Dead Sea salt from Natures Garden along with flour. Finally, this room scenting recipe is scented with Precious Gifts Fragrance Oil. This Christmas scent is reminiscent of the gifts given to the baby Jesus by the three kings.  A well rounded accord of frankincense and myrrh, vanilla extract, with unique top notes of French jasmine and English Ivy.

Spicy Liquid PotpourriSpicy Liquid Potpourri

Finally, another easy to make room scenting recipe is the Spicy Liquid Potpourri.  This is a simple combination of coconut oil and fragrance oil. We also added a red color to give it a festive holiday vibe! It is scented with Natures Garden’s Potpourri Spice Fragrance Oil. So, what does this fragrance oil smell like? It is the combination of freshly ground cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, ginger, and clove.

Smelly Jelly Kit Prepare and Sanitize

Make sure that you have sanitized your work space for this project so you have enough room to work and simple mistakes will be easier to avoid. Additionally, you will want to have all of your supplies and ingredients nearby and easily accessible to avoid time sensitive mistakes. Make sure that you have all of the supplies needed for this kit cleaned and ready to use. Also, have all of the ingredients that are not included in your kit ready and nearby. While this recipe is fairly simple, you can be led to create an imperfect productive by using dirty utensils or leaving your half finished product to search for ingredients.

Smelly Jelly Kit Making Instructions

Once you complete the first step you will want to make sure that you work quickly. Since many of the ingredients will need to disperse evenly, they need to be added before the smelly jelly crystals absorb all the water. This is so you are able to mix your ingredients well before the crystals swell entirely and make it more difficult to mix. Otherwise, you may have some issues with your finished product, whether it be that the fragrance didn’t disperse or that the color is concentrated in only one area of the jar. Thus, we’d recommend that you read through all the directions to understand what you will be doing and make your process slightly faster.

We should also note, when cleaning up make sure you do not put any smelly jelly crystals down your drain.  You want to place any lingering crystals in your garbage can.  Smelly jellies can hold up to 400 times their weight in water.  While they are biodegradable, they can clog your drain just because of the amount of water they can absorb.  So, just use caution.  Should you accidentally get some in your drain, simply pour table salt down your drain.  This should help to unclog it.

Smelly Jelly Kit Hydrating the Smelly Jelly Crystals

Smelly Jelly Kit Hydrating the Smelly Jelly CrystalsThe first step is to add the warm water and the smelly jelly crystals to one of the jars. Initially, we are going to fill up one of the six smelly jelly jars with the smelly jelly crystals. Now, add two teaspoons of the smelly jelly crystals one of your jars. Next, take your scale and make sure the units are set the units to ounces. Set the jar of smelly jelly crystals on the scale and tare your scale. Now, weigh 10 ounces of warm distilled water into the smelly jelly jar.

Smelly Jelly Kit Adding Liquid Soap

Smelly Jelly Kit Adding Liquid SoapSecond, you are going to want to add some liquid soap to the mixture. So, add in a few drops of clear, unscented liquid dish soap. You want the soap to be clear to avoid altering the color of dye you will choose later on. Also, you want the soap to be unscented to prevent an undesirable scent blend with your chosen fragrance oil.

For those questioning why soap is added to a room scenting creation, know that there is a legitimate reason. Adding the liquid soap is done to help the fragrance oil adhere better to the smelly jelly crystals. While this may cause soap bubbles to form later, these should pop over time. However, I don’t recommend shaking your final product as it will create an abundance of soap bubbles. Plus, I have not found shaking assist in dispersing color or fragrance after the smelly jelly crystals have completely absorbed the water.

Smelly Jelly Kit Adding the Dye

Smelly Jelly Kit Adding the DyeNext, we are going to add the soap dye and the fragrance oil to the smelly jelly jars. While not all kits will be exactly the same, there is an order to the random chance of what you will receive. For colorants, you should receive two different pigments to color your creation from a pool of red, blue, or yellow. Also, you will receive four one ounce bottles of different fragrance oils. While the scents included change, they are guaranteed to all be the Natures Garden quality you know and love. Plus, who doesn’t love a little surprise now and again?

Smelly Jelly Kit Adding the Fragrance Oil

Smelly Jelly Kit Adding the Fragrance OilNow, make your creative choices and get ready to include the scent and color into your jars. Take your measuring spoons and weigh one and a half tablespoons of one of your provided fragrance oils. Next, take one of your provided dyes and add a few drops into the smelly jelly jar. Now, mix up your ingredients with a spoon to evenly disperse the color and fragrance oil.  It is important to mix the dye and scent before the smelly jelly crystals completely swell or you may have patchy and uneven distribution. While some further distribution may occur with some help from time and gravity, it’s not guaranteed that the distribution will be perfect after missing the correct timing.

Smelly Jelly Kit Letting the Crystals Swell

Finally, you are going to let your finished product sit undisturbed for about 15 minutes. This will allow the smell jelly crystals to absorb the remainder of the water, fragrance oil, and dye. If you notice a lighter portion on the side of the jar you can attempt to cap and turn the jar on its side. While this only has a chance of correcting the problem, the dye that hasn’t been absorbed could potentially sink to this patch and even things out.

Smelly Jelly Kit Creating the Remaining Smelly Jelly Jars

Smelly Jelly Kit Creating the Remaining Smelly Jelly JarsNext, you are going to repeat these steps with the five remaining smelly jelly jars. The steps will be the same for each jar with the only alterations being the color of dye or type of fragrance oil. I’d suggest that you do each jar separately to prevent uneven distribution due to the timing. If the smelly jelly crystals swell before you add the other ingredients, then it will be difficult or even impossible to evenly distribute the scent and color in your jar.

Smelly Jelly Kit Packaging and Using Your Product

Afterward, you are likely going to want to store some of your six finished smelly jelly jars. Now, you should take one of the white, flat circles and pop it into one of the gold lids. Since these lids have slits in them, you will require the white seal to help close the smelly jelly jar for storage. This method of sealing your jars should store the product well. Further, any smelly jelly jars that you are ready to use can be set up similarly. Simple remove the white seal from the jar and replace the lid. Since the lid has slits, replacing the gold lid will still allow you to use the smelly jelly jar.

When coloring your wax, we suggest six drops red liquid candle dye and two drops brown liquid candle dye. Alternatively, a small amount of shredded red color block along with brown color block can be used. These recommendations are for a four pound batch of candles or wax tart recipes.  Just remember, never use crayons to color your candles as they will clog your wick.

While homemade room scenting products are able to be created using this alcoholic apple cider fragrance oil, bath and body creations are not permitted to be made with our Mulled Cider Fragrance Oil due to the fragrance oil not being body safe. Since this scent is not body safe, it can not be used on products made for the skin, bath, or any place where the fragrance my come into often or perhaps constant contact with an individual’s skin. Therefore, bath oils, bath gels, any kind of soap, lotions, homemade cleaning products and all other related bath and body products can not safely include this fragrance oil at any amount.
