Handmade Lotion RecipesHandmade Lotion Recipes

In today’s world, most people like to make their own soaps, bath and body products and even cosmetics. Generally, creating those things are not hard at all. Not only do you know the ingredients that will go in your product, but you can make the product to fit your needs or the needs of your customers or loved ones. Many people nowadays have skin issues that require skin-sensitive ingredients. That is another reason why many people turn to handmade goods. And like we stated before, it isn’t hard to do. Take a look through some of Nature’s Garden handmade lotion recipes. You will see how really simply and easy it is to make lotion. Also, with only a few ingredients, you can make a perfectly beautiful lotion that could rival the most expensive store brands out there in the market!

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Some Key Ingredients

Before we get started on our recipes, let’s familiarize ourselves with some of the key ingredients that you need to make lotion with. Really you can make a lotion with just shea butter and coconut oil whipped together. However, while those things will soften and hydrate your skin, they can separate while sitting when water is added. Another thing, they may not absorb into your skin very well, leaving you feeling greasy and sticky. The following components that we will discuss are key to getting a beautiful emulsified lotion that will not leave your skin feeling tacky and absorb beautifully.

Handmade Lotion Recipes: BTMS 25 EmulsifierHandmade Lotion Recipes: BTMS 25 Emulsifier

Our first ingredient is Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, or BTMS 25 Emulsifier is a natural, conditioning emulsifier that can be used in hair and skin care. BTMS is naturally derived from Colza oil. Colza oil is a non-drying oil that is obtained from seeds of the rapeseed plant. It isn’t truly rapeseed oil, but a derivative of it. BTMS can be used in creams and lotions to provide a soft, powdery feel to the skin and is very gentle on the skin and hair.

Handmade Lotion Recipes:  Emulsifying Wax, Traditional and SilkyHandmade Lotion Recipes:  Emulsifying Wax, Traditional and Silky

Next ingredient is our two other emulsifying waxes. We have Emulsifying Wax- Traditional and Silky Emulsifying Wax. While these waxes are not 100 percent natural, they are partial plant based and give wonderful structure to any type of lotion, cream, shampoo or conditioner. Both traditional and silky are self-emulsifying, low odor, highly stable, and highly compatible. Low concentrations of these waxes will improve the consistency and stability of emulsions. Which one do you choose for your product? Which ever you want! So, what exactly is the difference? The only difference is silky will give your lotion a lovely, silky-soft feel to you skin long after the lotion or cream has absorbed.  They can be used interchangeably.

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Optiphen PreservativeHandmade Lotion Recipes: Optiphen Preservative

Preservatives are essential to cosmetic formulations because they kill germs that can make you and your customers very sick. Optiphen is a liquid, paraben-free and formaldehyde-free preservative that provides broad spectrum preservation against bacteria, yeast and mold, the presence of caprylyl glycol. It also imparts an exceptional feel to the finished formulation which makes it useful in creams, sunscreens, lotions, cosmetics, body washes and shampoo recipes. This is a definite must have in any of your water based bath and body products that are created from scratch.

Handmade Lotion Recipe: Stearic Acid and Sodium Lactate

Stearic Acid is a plant based ingredient that is widely used in bath and body products, soaps and even in candles. For bath and body products, it is a wonderful addition to thicken up your product. In soaps, it is used to harden your bars of soap and to make them last longer. When used in candles, it also helps harden the wax and is perfect for making pillar candles or any type of mold candle. Another option is sodium lactate. Sodium lactate is a natural moisturizer, humectant, and pH regulator. It is used in handmade soaps, lotions, shampoo, and other bath and body products.

Handmade Lotion Recipe: Distilled Water

Yes, distilled water is an important ingredient to any of your lotions. You will see in any of our lotion recipes, that we ask you to heat your distilled water up to a specific ingredient and hold it there for 20 minutes. This is to ensure that you have destroyed any bacteria that may have been lingering around in the water.

Handmade Lotion Recipe: The Phases

Also you will notice that each recipe is done in phases. You have your Water Phase, which is where you are heating your water up. The Oil Phase. This is where you will heat and melt any of your butters and oils and waxes to a specific temperature. Next will be the Mixing Phase. Your will then mix together your water and butter and oils with a stick blender to emulsify. Lastly, you have your Cool Down Phase where you allow the lotion mixture to cool to a specific temperature before adding your fragrance oil and Optiphen. Then, you will package up your lotion and label if desired and you are ready to gift everybody you love with some handmade love! Now, let’s talk about our recipes!

We used our yummy Papaya Dragon Fruit fragrance oil and it smells of a tropical fruit salad made with peaches, pineapple, papaya and of course, Dragon Fruit! You will smell good enough to eat!

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Shea Lotion with Herbal Infusion RecipeHandmade Lotion Recipes: Shea Lotion with Herbal Infusion Recipe

Our Shea Lotion with Herbal Infusion is a beautiful lotion for any skin! Created with infused waters made from hibiscus flower powder and rosehips flower powder, your skin will thank you for the extra attention. Hibiscus is an herb know for being high in antioxidants and amino acids, and also contain oligopeptides that have been shown to have wrinkle-smoothing properties. Rosehips contain high levels of vitamin C, in addition to vitamins E, A, and D. Rosehips are used in skincare for its high level of antioxidants and anti-aging properties. The hibiscus/rosehip infusion will add a lovely natural pink color to your lotion. For the fragrance we chose our Peach Magnolia Raspberry fragrance oil. This scent smells of juicy raspberries and peaches with a light floral background.

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Frappe Mocha Body Cream RecipeHandmade Lotion Recipes: Frappe Mocha Body Cream Recipe

Our Frappe Mocha Body Cream is perfect for those with a coffee addiction! This cream is made with cocoa butter and sweet almond Oil. Both are perfect for making your skin feel soft and silky. As for the water part, however, we created it using a distilled coffee brew. This lotion is not only made with coffee, but the steeped coffee water truly helps punch up the coffee fragrance. For the fragrances, we chose both Fresh Brewed Coffee- World’s Best and our Chocolate Fudge Fragrance oil. If you didn’t want a Frappe Mocha before, you will after you smell this body cream! This body cream also comes in a kit size if you are looking for a Christmas gift to give to somebody special!

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Natural Face Cream RecipeHandmade Lotion Recipes: Natural Face Cream Recipe

This cream recipe is a favorite of mine. Natural Face Cream is made with an infusion of calendula flowers.  Calendula is believed to reduce inflammation, reduce acne, and promote healthy skin, which makes this a perfect addition to a night cream. Also, we have included Avocado Oil and Grapeseed Oil. Grapeseed oil does not clog pores, absorbs easily into the skin, does not leave a greasy feel to the skin, and provides the skin with anti inflammatory properties.  It is high in linoleic acid; providing mosturizing effects to the skin. Avocado Oil is a rich, moisturizing oil that is perfect for those with sensitive skin. This lotion is also available in a kit.

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Rose Lotion RecipeHandmade Lotion Recipes: Rose Lotion Recipe

Back in the 1970s there was a lotion my grandmother used a lot. It was called Rose Milk lotion and our Rose Lotion recipe truly reminds me of her when I use it. We infused our distilled water with our red Rose Buds & Petals. Rose water is the perfect addition to any skin-care regime. Its use dates back to days of Cleopatra and has many incredible benefits to its use. Rose water is perfect for any type of skin. It has antibacterial properties, anti-inflammatory and has a load of antioxidants in it. We also used cocoa butter, fractionated coconut oil and meadowfoam seed oil. Meadowfoam seed oil is a wonderful, light oil that absorbs easily into the skin, leaving you feeling soft and not greasy! We chose our Fresh Cut Roses fragrance oil to scent this beautiful lotion.

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Solid Lotion Bar RecipeHandmade Lotion Recipes: Solid Lotion Bar Recipe

Solid Lotion Bar is a quick and simple lotion that is perfect for those who like to hydrate their skin on the go! Made with shea butter, beeswax and jojoba oil, you have a lotion that absorbs quickly, seals in the moisture and keeps the winter dry skin at bay! This lotion is perfect for gym bags, purses, backpacks. No need to worry about loose caps and possible leakage with this lotion! We scented this lotion bar with our Beautiful Babe fragrance oil. If you are familiar with Estee Lauder’s Beautiful perfume, then you know how good this lotion will smell!  This fragrance is a delicate rose, jasmine and carnations with undertones of sweet melon and plum!

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Wine Lotion RecipeHandmade Lotion Recipes: Wine Lotion Recipe

Even though it says Wine Lotion, we did not use actual wine in the recipe. However, we did use our Resveratrol Extract Powder. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol found in in the skin of red grapes. This powder is similar in the same properties of red wine, meaning it has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties, and is used in products that fight acne. Also, Resveratrol is used in anti-aging, anti-wrinkle cosmetic products. It will provide anti-inflammatory properties that reduce swelling.

We also included cocoa butter, grapeseed oil and Jojoba Oil. Both of these oils are wonderful for the skin! Grapeseed oil is light and non-greasy feeling on the skin.  Jojoba oil is considered a “liquid wax” and it will lock in the moisture and keeps your skin hydrated. We chose our Shiraz fragrance oil to help round out our “wine theme”. This is a beautiful, light fruity but robust red wine scent! A must try for wine lovers!

Handmade Lotion Recipes: Chamomile Lotion Recipe

Our last recipe for today is our Chamomile Lotion Recipe. This is an easy, basic recipe that is perfect for beginners. We used apricot kernel oil and grapeseed oil. Both are light, absorb-able and non-greasy oils and are perfect when you want a light lotion. This would be a perfect summer-time lotion with no heavy oils or butters. The fragrance oil we chose is the delicate Chamomile fragrance oil. Chamomile fragrance oil smells of freshly picked chamomile flowers with hints of fresh green herbs.
