Homemade Lip Balm Kits Melting the Lip Balm Base

Homemade Lip Balm Kits Melting the Lip Balm BaseFirst, we are going to melt the lip balm base. Take the lid off of the lip balm base jar that you’ve been given. Now, put the jar without the lid into your microwave. You will want to heat your lip balm base in increments of 30 seconds. After this small amount of time, take the jar out and determine if it needs another 30 seconds. At this time, stir the lip balm base. Then, if needed, put it back in the microwave for another 30 seconds. The time that you will need to microwave will depend on the strength of your particular microwave. Once all of the lip balm base is liquid you will be ready for the next step.

Homemade Lip Balm Kits Tinting Your Lip Balm Base

Homemade Lip Balm Kits Tinting Your Lip Balm BaseNext, you will add the lip tint to your melted lip balm base. The color of your lip balm tint will vary between different kits, so you may not get the same shade each time. However, in the kits used for this blog, we had the Prissy Pink Lip Tint. You will want to add several drops of the lip tint with one of your provided pipettes. If you want a lighter shade, then add fewer drops. If you want to create a darker shade, then you may want to add quite a few more drops of the colorant. You can add a few drops and mix it quickly to decide on the shade. Since it will dry slightly different color you can place a drop on a paper plate and see the shade you will get in the end. Overall, the amount of lip tint that you add depends on your own personal preference.

Homemade Lip Balm Kits Optional Sweetening Step

Homemade Lip Balm Kits Optional Sweetening StepNow, you have the option to add in some powdered stevia sweetener. If you want your lip balm to be a bit of a gritty texture similar to a lip scrub, then you will want to include this step in your process. The added sweetener will not dissolve and will be suspended in your mixture. Those that would like to create this lip scrub sort of texture, will want to add a fourth of the packet into your mixture. If you are dividing your mixture into two portions, then you will want to add about an eighth to either one or each of your mixtures. However, if you don’t want any lip scrub feeling you don’t have to add the sweetener at all.

Homemade Lip Balm Kits Flavoring the Lip Balm Base

Homemade Lip Balm Kits Flavoring the Lip Balm BaseThen, you are going to add the lip balm flavoring to your mixture. There are two different ways you can do this step. Either split your mixture into two or make all of the lip balm products the same. If you are keeping your mixture in one bowl, then you will want to pick one of your two flavorings. Add the entire 6 ml bottle of your chosen flavoring to your lip balm base mixture. Now, mix and you are ready for the next step. However, you can use a bit of both if you’re are indecisive or like each of your flavorings equally. If you are using both, then you will want to split your mixture in half into two different bowls. In one add half of your first flavoring and in the other bowl add half of the second flavoring. Now, mix a both of your bowls.

Next, it is time to add a bit of mica dust to make your lip balm sparkly and pretty! Either take your single batch or your divided batch and add some of the dust. Depending on how sparkly you want it to be, you can add more or less. You don’t need to add all of the mica powder given in your kit, but adding quite a bit shouldn’t hurt your finished product.

Finally, you are going to add the lip balm mixture to your various lip balm tubes and pots. If you have one single batch, take one of your clean pipettes to transfer the lip balm to the containers. You may want to be quick as your lip balm may start to set up. On the other hand, those that have divided their mix into two parts can use the pipettes that were used for the flavoring to transfer the mixture to the containers.

Now, just let the homemade lip balm set up at room temperature. It will setup pretty quickly and be ready to use soon! Once they setup, place a lid on each container or lip balm tube. You can now use your lip balm. Simply spread a little bit of your lip balm on your lips. We hope that you enjoy our homemade lip balm kit. Once you make your lip balm, we’d love to see pictures. 2. Why did you decide to go into business? What was your motivation? How long have you
been in business?
Back in 2007, I got injured on the job as a patient care assistant and ended up out of work for a period of time. Since I had extra time on my hands, I wanted to learn how to make candles. It originally started as just a hobby. I then started trying to come up with unique ideas and decided to allow others to purchase my art. My motivation was to allow others to have something with a personal touch versus something you would just pick up in the store. I have been working out of my home since 2011.

3. What products do you make and sell?  I currently sell tea lights, rose shaped candle melts, heart shape candle melts, cat candles, heart candles, votives, and lip balms. My candles are made out of crème wax and soy wax depending on the product being made. I would also like to expand into more products in the near future.

4. What are your business goals?  Rather than focusing on long term goals and variables I cannot predict, I like to focus my immediate efforts on expanding my own independence day by day.  I intend to expand my catalog as well as expand my business in the online world.  Much of what I am doing is being played by ear.  I find that remaining open ended allows for more opportunities and less difficulty in handling success in unplanned venues.

5. What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  The products I have tried from Natures Garden have been Frosted Gift Bags, Incense Sticks, DPG Solvent Liquid, Strawberry Cheesecake Lip Balm Kit and Rosemary Mint Type Fragrance Oil.  Natures Garden is new to me, so I haven’t had the opportunity to try many products as of yet but look forward to trying more.  As of right now, I really liked the strawberry cheesecake starter kit. It was easy to make and fun to do.

Using Herbs in Cosmetics

1. What’s your name & Your Company Name
Nieves Rathbun, By Nieves

2. Why did you decide to go into business? What was your motivation? How long have you been in business?
I have been in the natural products industry for two decades.  I managed the flagship store for V’tae Parfum & Body Care in Nevada City, Calif., and later worked at Zia Natural Skincare in San Francisco.  When my knowledge of cosmetic ingredients made finding products that I wanted to use myself increasingly difficult.  I decided to take matters into my own hands.  Abiding by the very simple philosophy that products can be made using only beneficial ingredients, I developed a line of products using wholesome time tested ingredients in unique formulations.  Happy with the results I started sharing them with friends and now I have a natural handmade body care line produced with organic ingredients and served with a twist.  I am delighted to be making a living doing what I love!

3. What products do you make and sell?
Handmade natural body care made with super natural ingredients, sassy sincerity and apothecary style.  Everything good, nothing bad.  By Nieves products are simple yet effective formulas that produce great results.  For an ingredient savvy person it’s a relief to read the contents and be able to understand what’s in the products.

4. What are your business goals?
I’d like to have more independent spas and boutiques carrying my products, and have more internet retail orders but I’m not really hunting the big guys, slow expansion feels right to me.  Currently, By Nieves, is only found in independent stores and employes 4 part-time employees in Petrolia; one part-timer in Oakland. I hope to grow to employ four to 20 people full time, diversify the economy in Petrolia (population 300) and I have a fantasy of it becoming worker-owned!

5. What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?
Healing herbs and spices like Burdock Root, Whole Anise Seed, and the DIY Starter Kits like the Vegan Lip Balm!
