We love using Natures Garden ingredients to play around with and create new and different recipes to share with you all. Today we are going to be highlighting a bath and body recipe that we recently made. It is our watermelon bubble bars recipe, that we made using quality cosmetic ingredients that are great for the skin. This combination of elements in the bubble bar scoops provide skin moisturizing properties both inside and outside of the bath. This is one of our many recipes that uses the surfactant Sodium Cocoyl Isentionate (SCI) as opposed to Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA). We hope that you will feel the difference and enjoy making these adorable mini watermelon bubble bars.

Before starting the watermelon bubble bar recipe, we like to remind you that it is important to clean and sanitize your work station area and all of the materials that you will be using. We always suggest that you wear gloves, an apron, safety glasses, a face mask, and a hair net when you are preparing these recipes. Natures Garden sells each one of these other than the hair net, and they are all linked above.

Weigh Out the Dry IngredientsWeigh Out the Dry Ingredients

First, we will prepare all of our dry ingredients. Get out a scale so that we can accurately measure everything out. You will also need a mixing bowl to combine them all together. The first thing we weighed out was 205 grams of the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI). Then, we measured 230 grams of the baking soda, 112 grams of the cream of tartar, and 36 grams of the corn starch. These ingredients should all be added into the same mixing bowl. 

SCI versus SLSA

For this watermelon bubble bar recipe we used Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, as you can tell from the list of ingredients. This is one type of surfactant that is often added to bath and body products such as bubble bars, bath bombs, and shampoo bars. There are a ton of recipes up on the website that use this ingredient. It helps to moisturize the skin, which is very beneficial to those who have dry skin. The properties in SCI are gentle and will leave your skin feeling nice and softened.

Another surfactant that is commonly used in bubble bars, bath bombs, shampoo bars, etc. is Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate. Although this will not leave your skin feeling as soft as products with SCI will, the lather and production of bubbles is much greater with SLSA. Both of these are great to use in these products and both provide great benefits to the skin.

Break Up Any Clumps in the MixtureBreak Up Any Clumps in the Mixture

Getting back into the steps of the recipe, we need to put gloves on if you have not already done so. With the gloves on, use your hands to break up any clumps in the dry powder mixture. The baking soda tends to contribute the most to this clumping. It is important to break any and all of these up in order to avoid having them in the finished product. Once all of the clumps are broken up and gone, go ahead and use your hands to mix the ingredients together seamlessly.

Now, we are going to have to grab a separate mixing bowl. The wet ingredients will need to mixed individually before they can be combined with the dry ones. Using the scale once again, we need to accurately weigh out each of our liquid ingredients. First, we will measure out 100 grams of the vegetable glycerin. Then, we will add to that 12 grams of the macadamia nut oil, and 5 grams of the vitamin E oil. Mix all of them together.

We decided to use macadamia nut oil for its conditioning properties. We wanted these bubble bars to feel good on the skin and condition it, which is why this oil is perfect to use. This is an oil that is nourishing and moisturizing to the skin while avoiding making it feel oily. For this reason, it is often used to make lotion recipes, massage oil recipes, and hair care products such as conditioner. We also commonly use this in some of our cold process soap recipes as well, like our Peppered Poppy Seed and Strawberries and Champagne soaps.

In the next step, we will weigh out and add the 7 grams of our Sour Watermelon Candy Fragrance Oil. The notes in this fragrance oil bring together a combination of pineapples, oranges, and juicy watermelon. Another project that we created using this same fragrance oil is the Sour Watermelon Sugar Scrub Cubes Recipe. These include oils that are great to add to skin care products like this one. After you have added the fragrance oil in, mix all of your liquid ingredients together again.

In this step, you will need to take the mixing bowl that has the wet ingredients and combine it with the mixing bowl that has the dry ingredients. Add the liquids to the bowl containing the dry ones. Once again, using your hands to mix the ingredients together will work better than using other utensils. Then, you will need to take out two additional mixing bowls. Divide the dough you just formed into three equal portions. Put each one of these parts into separate bowls.

For the next step, we can set the first bowl aside. We will be keeping this portion of the dough white, so it will not need any colorant added to it. Take the second bowl of dough and add to it 5 drops of the tomato red FUN soap colorant and 10 drops of the neon pink FUN soap colorant.

Once it has been added, thoroughly mix in the colorants using your hands. Continue to mix until the dough is completely covered in the pink colorant. If you are unsatisfied with color, you can add in a few more drops. We added enough for it to be a pink shade. However, adding more of the tomato red color will make it look more like a true watermelon. Once you like how it looks, you can form the dough into a ball and roll it with your hands. Set the second bowl aside for a moment.

Now, you will need clean gloves. Take the third and final mixing bowl to create the green portion of your bubble bars. You will need to add 10 drops of the neon green FUN soap colorant and 2 drops of the Kelly green FUN soap colorant.

When you have added in the green colorants, mix them thoroughly into the dough just as you did with the pink portion. Use your hands until there is no longer any white dough visible. Once again, if you would like the dough to be a darker shade of green, add more of the Kelly green, since it is the darker of the two green colorants. When you are satisfied with the color, form it into a green ball.

Then, you can pack the three mixtures of the bubble bar dough into the same mixing bowl. We will explain the way that we laid it in the bowl. First, place the white portion in the center. Put the pink portion on one side of the white dough, and the green portion on the other side of the white dough. It does not matter which one of them is on the left or right of the white. Use your hands to press down on each of the balls of dough. Press each of them tightly into the bowl. This is going to make it easier to scoop in the next step.

Now, we have reached the fun part of forming the cute ice cream scoops! Get your flexible silicone mat out and place it on the counter next to you so that it is ready when you need it. Take out a stainless steel ice cream scoop and use it to scoop out the bubble bar dough. Start on the pink side of the bowl and work your way over to the green dough scooping across the bowl. Having the pink on the top is going to create the look of a watermelon. Make sure that you include all three of the colors in each of the scoops. As you dig them out, place the scoops onto your flexible silicone mat.

After all of the scoops are on your mat, you can bring out the poppy seeds. Sprinkle the poppy seeds onto these sour watermelon candy bubble bars to top them off. The amount that you choose to use is completely up to you and however you would like them to look. The poppy seeds are meant to resemble the seeds in watermelons. We sprinkled ours onto the pink portion of the bubble bars since that is the part where real watermelon seeds are. After they are topped off, you will need to give them some time to set up. Allow your watermelon bubble bars to sit undisturbed from anywhere between 24 and 48 hours. 

After you have waited long enough and checked that they have hardened up, your watermelon bubble bars will be ready to use! When you are ready to take them into your bath, all you have to do is simply crumble a couple of the scoops under your warm running bath water.

It’s that time of the year again when the weather starts to get cooler and the leaves start to fall off the trees. If you are anything like me, you love pumpkin rolls! This Pumpkin Roll Bubble Bars Project is the perfect recipe to make at home to bring the fall life into your house. Since we all love pumpkin this time of year time of year, we thought why not show you how to create a fun pumpkin themed bubble bar.  This recipe not only works as a bubble bar but can also be used as a decoration in your bathroom as well.

Before you begin to make any of these bubble bars, it is usually recommended to clean and sanitize any of your utensils and your workstation before starting on the recipe to guarantee the best results. You should wear gloves, an apron, a face mask, and a hair net while preparing this recipe.

Before we begin preparing our pumpkin roll bubble bars project, let’s take a closer look at the fragrance oil that we will be using. Pumpkin Roll Fragrance Oil by Natures Garden Candle and Soap Making Supplies brings the aroma of a fall favorite to life without the added calories.  The aroma of sweet sugar pumpkin puree is spiced with hints of spicy cinnamon and nutmeg. Then, notes of a warm, sweet-butter crust, drizzled with maple and honey are layered in.

Mid Notes: Maple, Cinnamon, Nutmeg
Base Notes: Vanilla

Preparing the Dry IngredientsPreparing the Dry Ingredients

We will start this process by preparing our dry ingredients for making the Pumpkin Roll Bubble Bars. Lay all of your ingredients out on your workstation to allow easy access to them while working. In the deep mixing bowl, weigh your baking soda, sodium cocoyl isethionate, cream of tartar, and corn starch. So, place your bowl on your scale and be sure to tare out your scale.  Then, add the powdered ingredients to your bowl.

Use your hands to mix the ingredients for the bubble bar recipe together. Any clumps that are present in the powder should be broken down using your hands to ensure that the dry ingredients are clump free and smooth. 

Mixing the Wet Ingredients

In a second small bowl, weigh out and mix the wet ingredients that are going to be added to the mixture. After the wet ingredients are weighed, add the following wet ingredients to a mixing bowl: vegetable glycerin, pumpkin seed oil, Vanilla White Color Stabilizer, and Pumpkin Roll Fragrance Oil. When all the ingredients are properly added to the bowl, mix the wet ingredients together. When you’re finished blending the ingredients, you are ready to begin mixing the wet ingredients with the powdered ingredients.

The next step is to take the wet ingredients and add them to the same bowl containing the dry ingredients that you mixed. Put on your Nature’s Garden gloves, and mix the wet and dry bubble bar ingredients together using your hands. Keep mixing the ingredients in the deep bowl until you have a dough-like consistency that is slightly thicker than pizza dough.

Identify Correctly Mixed Dough

When you are finished mixing these ingredients, there are a few things you are looking for. If there are any lumps still present, keep mixing until you completely get rid of any lumps. If you come to notice that the dough is also too crumbly, then add some Nature’s Garden vegetable glycerin to the dough to ensure that it is smooth enough for rolling.  However, do not add too much to the doughy mixture otherwise it will not setup correctly and not harden completely.

Next, you will need a second deep mixing bowl. The dough in one of the bowls will remain white since this will be used as the internal filling to the Pumpkin Roll Bubble Bars Project. Take the bubble bar dough that you are going to leave white, roll it into a ball, and place it back into the bowl and leave it aside for later. Next, move over to the second bowl that contains the second lump of dough. The contents of the second bowl will be colored to resemble that of dough which will look like a lighter brown.

Following the ingredient amounts listed above, add the following ingredients to the dough in the second bowl: the pumpkin pie spice blend powder, FUN Soap Colorant orange oxide, FUN Soap Colorant yellow oxide, and the FUN Soap Colorant brown oxide. Then, using your hands, mix the bubble bar dough until the ingredients are completely blended. After you have fully incorporate the ingredients in the mixing bowl, roll the pumpkin colored dough into a ball.

Preparing the MatPreparing the Mat

Now is the time to start rolling out the pumpkin roll dough. First, you will need your flexible silicone mat. Another option would be to use parchment paper instead. I prefer the baking mat because it is reusable and a little thicker and sturdier. Take some baking soda and lightly sprinkle it over the mat and rolling pin. The baking soda will work to aid in preventing the dough from sticking to the mat. If the dough is too sticky, it will have the tendency to want to stick to a silicone mat or the rolling pin that are being used to roll the dough out.

First, make sure that the silicone mat is clean and dry. Then, take the pumpkin colored bubble bar dough, and place it on the flexible silicone mat. Take a rolling pin and roll the dough out into a rectangular shape. It doesn’t have to be a perfect rectangle. Just do your best to get it as close as you can. For the best look for your Pumpkin Roll Bubble Bars Project, make sure to roll the dough out to about a  ¼” thickness.

Next, take the white bubble bar dough ball and place it on top of the pumpkin colored dough. Sprinkle a little bit more baking soda onto the rolling pin. When the rolling pin is ready to use, roll out the white dough ball that you placed on top of the pumpkin colored dough layer. When you’re done rolling out the white dough layer, it should come out to be about that same thickness as the pumpkin colored dough layer at around ¼”. You also want it to be about the same shape and size as the pumpkin colored dough. Again, it does not need to be exact. You just want it to be as close to the previous layer as possible.

The next step is to roll the bubble bar dough into a loaf to look like a Pumpkin Roll.  The first step is to place the dough in front of you vertically. Take the edge of the parchment paper or silicone baking mat that is the closest to your body and lift up on it. You want to make sure you have a good grip on it. 

To roll a pumpkin roll, take the edge of the flat rectangular dough, and rolling it out over itself. Roll the dough into a cylinder to create a white swirl in the center of the roll. Take your time while rolling the dough to make sure that it doesn’t crack or tear in the process. Roll out the pumpkin roll evenly. This ensures that the entire Pumpkin Roll Bubble Bars Project looks its best.  Place the dough back onto the parchment paper.

When the pumpkin roll dough is rolled up to your desired look, take a knife and cut the roll into 1-2 inch slices or whichever thickness you prefer. Make sure the knife that you use to cut the bubble bar is clean of any excess residue. If you notice any debris on the knife, wipe it off before cutting the next slice. This should keep the pumpkin roll looking clean. The expected yield of this recipe is usually around 8 slices, but depending on how thick you ended up cutting the roll, it could vary by 1 or 2.  Finally, sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of corn starch onto the outside of the roll as to resemble powdered sugar.

Setting up and Decorating the Loaf

Once you have sliced your loaf, give the bubble bars time to set up. You can tell when the bubble bars are ready when they are hard to the tough.  When we made the bubble bars, it took them approximately 48-72 hours to setup completely. It can take longer for your results to setup depending on the environment of the room. Create these bubble bars in a dry room with low humidity, and at room temperature. This helps the bubble bars setup.

Using the Finished Pumpkin Roll

Your pumpkin roll bubble bars should now be ready to use. These bubble bars should make a great home decoration for the Halloween or Fall season. They are great to put out as a decoration in your bathroom next to the tub. You can also leave them on your sink countertop for decorations too.  To use the bubble bars, take one of the slices that you cut up, and crumble it under warm running bathwater. These bubble bars tend to give an inviting appearance to your bathtub, while also filling it up with bubble. In addition, they will leave your skin feeling soft and silky.  It’s a fun recipe for any age group, and anyone would enjoy soaking with this Nature’s Garden recipe.
