Easy Directions for Making Melt and Pour Soap

We know how exciting it is to embark on a brand new adventure, but before getting started, it is important to have all of your supplies readily available and at your fingertips. Here is a standard checklist to ensure you have everything that you need.

Recommended Equipment:
• Cutting Board
• Natures Garden Body Safe Fragrance Oil
• Measuring Utensils (stainless steel only)
• Mixing Spoon (wood or stainless steel)
• Large Knife
• Rubbing Alcohol in spray bottle
• Any additives
• Cotton Swabs
• Paper Towels or Kitchen Towels

NOTE: During this soap making class, we made Puppy Paw Soap. This is soap that can be used to give your wonderful pets a bath. We chose Pooch Smooch fragrance for this project; a fragrance distinctly created to be pet safe.

Now let’s make some soap!

Step 1: Depending on which method of melting you are using (double-boiling or microwave) prepare your pots or glass container. Get your soap, cutting board and knife. Each 2 pound block of Natures Garden Melt and Pour Soap is perforated into 40 cubes. Cut along the perforation for the desired amount of cubes that you will be using. Each cube is approximately 1 ounce in weight. Once you have your cubes ready, transfer them to the appropriate melting container and cover.

Step 2: Melt the Soap. This may take some time, but do not rush. Patience is a virtue, and you do not want to risk burning your soap base. The flashpoint of Melt and Pour soap is 150 degrees Fahrenheit. When checking the soap, stir with ease using a wooden or stainless steel spoon. The soap will liquefy completely, and vigorously stirring to try to rush the process will only create pesky air bubbles. If there is a chunk of unmelted soap, stir gently to help loosen it, but keep your heat source going until all of the soap is melted. While melting the soap base measure out the appropriate amount of Natures Garden body safe fragrance oil using stainless steel measuring utensils and set aside.

Step 3: Once the soap base is melted, remove from heat source. Add your desired Natures Garden soap dye first. Do not stir yet. Next (optional), add any additives that you might be including in your soap bars. Finally, add your Natures Garden body safe fragrance oil. Stir Gently.

Step 4: Prepare you molds. While the soap is cooling, lay out your mold. Grab a paper towel or kitchen towel and lightly mist it with cooking spray (any brand will work). Next, take the towel and gently wipe the inside of the mold or each cavity of the mold you will be using. When you are finished, set the mold down, you want to ensure that the mold lays flat. Finally, slowly pour the soap mixture into the mold. You will want to stop pouring when the cavity is full.

Step 5: It is possible, that even with precaution slowly stirring and pouring you still have air bubbles. While the mold is still lying flat, take your alcohol spray bottle and lightly mist the back of the soap. This will pop any of those bubbles. Do not overdo it though; a little bit goes a long way.

Step 6: Now you are ready to cool. You can leave the molds where they lie and they will cool naturally. This will take about 2 hours. However, if you would like to speed up the process, you may place your molds in the refrigerator. They must remain flat at all times. Never use the freezer!

Step 7: Get Excited! Your soap has now cooled, and you are ready to pop your crafts out. Since you prepped the mold with cooking spray this is a breeze. However, when getting your soap out of the mold, if you accidently touch the soap and leave a fingerprint, just grab the alcohol spray bottle and dampen a cotton swab. Then, gently swab over the fingerprint lightly, and it will begin to disappear.

Step 8: Congratulations, you just made your own soap. Easy, huh! Now it is time to take that soap for a spin. Give your new soap a try, you will love how smooth and nourished your skin will feel.
