Natures Garden's No Tear Baby Shampoo: Unscented, uncolored. No SLS, no phthalates. Our shampoo base can be used on babies or on people who are highly sensitive to many shampoos on the market. You are welcome to use the shampoo base as it is, or you can color and fragrance the shampoo. If you desire to scent your shampoo base, you will need to refer to the IFRA statement for the specific fragrance that you desire to use. For baby products, you will want to refer to category #3 to find out the maximum amount of fragrance that can be used in a finished product. If you are making adult shampoo with our shampoo base, then you will need to refer to category #9 on the IFRA sheet for the fragrance of your choice. Please note that usually only 1% of fragrance is typically used in a baby shampoo; while adult shampoo will range from 1-3% fragrance level.
How to make scented & colored shampoo: Add soap dye to the shampoo base to color it. Never use candle coloring for this. Add your fragrance oil to the shampoo, and mix.
Due to the fact that we sell more than 700 fragrances, it is impossible for us to say if the shampoo base will still be tear-free once fragrance is added to this base. Therefore, we think that you should assume that addition of fragrance oil to the shampoo base will no longer make it tear free. You are responsible for all testing of any products that you create with our bases.
What to do if a fragrance oil makes your shampoo base too thin: Sometimes a fragrance oil can thin a finished shampoo or bath gel. If this happens, you will need to use a product called xanthum gum to thicken your product. Xanthum gum is an all-natural thickener, and a little xanthum gum goes a long way. Xanthum gum is used in a range of .1 to 1% of the overall mixture. Start with only 1/2 tsp of xanthum gum, and add it to 1/4 cup of room temperature distilled water. Use a hand mixer, and mix the water/xanthum gum on high speed for about 5 minutes. Xanthum gum can clump up, so it is important that you mix it into the water thoroughly. Quickly add the mixture to your shampoo base and stir. If you wait too long to add the xanthum gum mixture to the shampoo base, you will end up with a product that looks like tapioca pudding. Allow the product to set up. This should thicken your shampoo base. While our xanthum gum was formulated to work in transluscent gel products, there are times that the fragrance itself may cloud the mixture.
