Vegan Lip Balm KitVegan Lip Balm Kit

The Vegan Lip Balm Kit is a recipe that is silky and extremely moisturizing, like many other Nature’s Garden lip balm recipes. Since this lip care recipe includes various oils and butters that are soft and long-lasting, this is a perfect recipe for great lip care. Not only is this silky lip balm perfect for lip care, but this recipe is completely vegan! The lip balm recipe doesn’t use any products that are come from animals. Typically, lip balm recipes use beeswax, so we replaced this ingredient with candelilla wax. This alternative is plant based, but it is still just as great for your lips. Also, this kit creates twenty-four full tubes of vegan lip balm, so you will have plenty of lip balm with even some to share. So, this kit is all around perfect for anyone looking for a great lip balm that happens to have the additional bonus of being entirely vegan!

Vegan Lip Balm Kit Clean and Sanitize

You are going to want to make sure that you are completely prepared before you begin this project. So, you’ll need to gather and sanitize all the necessary ingredients and equipment. First, gather all of the equipment that you will need to complete this project. Also, sanitize your workspace and any other equipment. This will prevent potentially contaminating the lip balm and make the process easier to complete.

Vegan Lip Balm Kit Setting up the Double BoilerVegan Lip Balm Kit Setting up the Double Boiler

Before you start make sure you know how to create a double boiler which will be used to melt your oils, waxes, and butters. You will need the two differently sized pots and a stove top. So, take the larger pot and add two or three inches of water. Then, place the smaller pot into the water. Place the double boiler on the stove and you’re ready to use! Once you have prepared your waxes, butters, and oils, place them in the smaller pot. You will then need to turn your oven on a low heat setting. Make sure that you keep a careful eye on the water level and make sure the ingredients don’t get too hot. You do not want to overheat the oils.

First, you will weigh out a few of the ingredients that will take longer to melt. So, retrieve a gram scale and tare out the weight of a bowl. Then, weigh the appropriate amounts of candelilla wax and cocoa butter into the bowl. After, transfer these ingredients to the small pot of the double boiler and turn on the stove top. While these ingredients are melting move on to the next step.

Next, you will weigh out the remaining oils for the recipe. So, tare out the bowl on the gram scale. Then, weigh out 37 grams of Coconut Oil 76, 35 grams of Castor Oil, and 1 gram of Vitamin E Oil into the bowl. After most of the candelilla wax and cocoa butter has melted, add this mixture of oils to the smaller pot in the double boiler. Make sure that your oils don’t burn as you wait for everything to be melted. Finally, once everything has melted, you can remove the melted oils from the stove top and transfer them into your bowl.

Vegan Lip Balm Kit Adding Optional IngredientsVegan Lip Balm Kit Adding Optional Ingredients

Now, you are at a point where you can add in some optional ingredients. These ingredients could be flavoring, lip tint, or stevia sweetener. If you choose to flavor your lip balm, then add 20 drops of the provided Strawberry Sorbet Flavoring Oil. However, you could leave your lip balm plain if you’d prefer. Also, you can add a bit of the Stevia Sweetener to your lip balm. Although it won’t dissolve, adding a small amount shouldn’t be too noticeable. If you choose you can also crush it up a bit to create a finer powder. You also have the option to include a bit more of the provided sweetener to provide a lip scrub feel. Although you can add a lip tint to your melted oils, there is no lip tint included in the kit. After you decide the specifics of your lip balm you’re ready for the next step.

Finally, you are ready to transfer the melted lip balm to your lip balm tubes. You will want to move quickly to prevent the lip balm from setting up before you are able to transfer. So, take your plastic transfer pipettes and move the melted lip balm into the tubes. Make sure you allow your lip balm time to set up before you move the tubes or add the cap. So, after the lip balm entirely sets up your lip balm is ready to use!

Products Customers Love

fragrance oilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name:  My name: Kymberlee Ricke  Company Name: Wizard at Work

Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I’ve been crafting my whole life and I had a brief flirtation with soap making for craft shows about ten years ago.  When the economy hit me and I became unemployed I discovered that I suddenly had both time and motivation to re-energize my crafting and I began making soaps, candles and bath bombs and listing them on Etsy.  My shop opened in 2010.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  I primarily sell soap, candles, bath bombs and solid lotion bars.  I also toss in a few papercrafts like cards and gift tags and some of my photography and jewelry.

4.  What are your business goals?  My first goal is to make a product my customers love.  I use the minimal number of ingredients and avoid chemicals everywhere possible to make skin-friendly, child-friendly, wallet-friendly products.   On the financial side, this year my winter holiday season was successful enough that I can afford to go on one of my ‘bucket list’ photography trips this summer.  If I can do that each year, I’ll be thrilled.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  Of course I go through a ton of fragrance oils in my business.  Pomegranate and Peach are huge favorites with my customers.  I also use the Dill Pickle for something a little off the beaten path. And of course there’s always the good old stand-bys like vanilla, lavender and coffee. I use the 415 Soy Wax in my candles as well as in my vegan-option lip balms and solid lotion bars (it replaces the beeswax).fragrance oils

Using Herbs in Cosmetics

1. What’s your name & Your Company Name
Nieves Rathbun, By Nieves

2. Why did you decide to go into business? What was your motivation? How long have you been in business?
I have been in the natural products industry for two decades.  I managed the flagship store for V’tae Parfum & Body Care in Nevada City, Calif., and later worked at Zia Natural Skincare in San Francisco.  When my knowledge of cosmetic ingredients made finding products that I wanted to use myself increasingly difficult.  I decided to take matters into my own hands.  Abiding by the very simple philosophy that products can be made using only beneficial ingredients, I developed a line of products using wholesome time tested ingredients in unique formulations.  Happy with the results I started sharing them with friends and now I have a natural handmade body care line produced with organic ingredients and served with a twist.  I am delighted to be making a living doing what I love!

3. What products do you make and sell?
Handmade natural body care made with super natural ingredients, sassy sincerity and apothecary style.  Everything good, nothing bad.  By Nieves products are simple yet effective formulas that produce great results.  For an ingredient savvy person it’s a relief to read the contents and be able to understand what’s in the products.

4. What are your business goals?
I’d like to have more independent spas and boutiques carrying my products, and have more internet retail orders but I’m not really hunting the big guys, slow expansion feels right to me.  Currently, By Nieves, is only found in independent stores and employes 4 part-time employees in Petrolia; one part-timer in Oakland. I hope to grow to employ four to 20 people full time, diversify the economy in Petrolia (population 300) and I have a fantasy of it becoming worker-owned!

5. What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?
Healing herbs and spices like Burdock Root, Whole Anise Seed, and the DIY Starter Kits like the Vegan Lip Balm!
