What does Spa Fragrance Oil smell like?

This fragrance oil by Natures Garden is the floral blend of jasmine, rose and neroli with hints of violet on a background of Tonka beans and fresh green ferns.  We carried our Spa fragrance long before Spas were popular in the US.  An NG Original Fragrance!

How do our customers use Spa Fragrance Oil?

For all of you candle crafters out there; Spa Fragrance Oil is used in various soy and soy blend waxes, WOW wax, paraffin wax, Joy wax, and Pillar of Bliss waxes.  This fragrance is very soft and soothing yet still has a great cold and hot scent throw in wax.  This spa scent also works very well for oil burners, sachet beads, and calming room sprays.

For bath and body crafters, this spa scent is amazing!  The usage rate for spa fragrance oil is 3%.  It does contain a 1.3% vanillin content, so Vanilla White Color Stabilizer is advised by our customers to stabilize any discoloration in finished products. This amazing spa scent is used to make: solid lotion bars, bath bombs, body scrubs, spray lotions, perfumes, melt and pour soaps, body sprays, bath gels, whipped body butters and emulsified sugar scrubs.  Finally, for those of you that are cold process soapers, this fragrance is well worth the effort.  Here are the official results:  NICE fragrance!  Large tapioca ricing with moderate acceleration.  Add at light trace with no water discount.  Stick blend fast to smooth, and pour quickly.   Discolors to a light beige.

Patriotic Candle

patriotic candle recipeMake your own Patriotic Candle

This Fourth of July, why not add a little more pizzazz to the party!

Making your own Patriotic Candle using beeswax and Pillar of Bliss is a fun and easy project that even the little ones can help with.

You can easily make a candle for each political party using Natures Garden’s Political Fragrance Oil Line.  This would include: Democrat Fragrance Oil, Republican Fragrance Oil, and Independent Fragrance Oil.

For this blog, the creative team at Natures Garden is going to show you the step by step instruction for just how easy it is to make your very own patriotic candle.  The instruction is very simple to make one 16oz. candle and you will only need a few supplies to complete it.

Here are the ingredients you will need:
Pillar of Bliss Wax
Beeswax
Political Fragrance Oil- we are using Democrat fragrance for this candle
Red Spectrum Candle Dye
Blue Spectrum Candle Dye
(2) CD 12 Wicks

You will also need:
Star Cookie Cutter
Candle Jar
Scale
Cutting Board
A piece of wax paper
Mixing Spoon
(2) Ziploc Bags
(2) Disposable Spoons
Hot Glue Gun

heating the water
To begin, we will be melting down our beeswax.  In order to do this, fill a pot with about 3 inches of water.  Place your pot on your stove top (on a medium to low heat setting.)

double boiler method

Next, weigh out 50 grams of the beeswax.  Place all of the pastilles into your pouring pot (or a second smaller pot).  Then, place the second pot into the first pot.  This method of melting down the beeswax is known as the double boiler.  Keep an eye on the beeswax.  Once the water starts heating up, it will not take that long to get the beeswax to a liquid state.

weigh out the pillar of bliss

Plug in your hot glue gun.  While you are waiting on the beeswax to melt, get your 2 Ziploc bags.  Using your scale, weigh out and place 225 grams of Pillar of Bliss wax into each bag.

adding democrat scent

Next, place one bag back on the scale.  Add 18 grams of Democrat fragrance oil.  Repeat with the second bag.  While the second bag is still on the scale, place 4 drops of Spectrum Red Candle Dye into the bag.  Then, seal each bag shut.  Then, shake them vigorously.  This will disperse the fragrance oil among the wax as well as incorporate the red dye.  At this point, you will have 1 bag of white wax and 1 bag of red wax.  Set aside.

scenting and coloring the pillar of bliss

Check the beeswax.  If it is melted, place 2 drops of Blue Spectrum Candle Dye into the wax.  Using the mixing spoon, gently stir the blue color in.  Place the beeswax back in the heat source.

coloring the beeswax

Now, let’s prep the candle jar.  Using your hot glue gun, attach both CD 12 wicks to the bottom of your candle jar.  Make sure the wicks are centered and equally spaced apart.

prepping your candle jar

Next, lay out a piece of wax paper.  Remove your beeswax from the heat source and turn your stove off.  Next, add 4 grams of Democrat Fragrance oil to the blue beeswax and stir.

scenting your beeswax

Once incorporated, carefully pour the beeswax onto one area of the wax paper.  Allow this to set up at room temperature.  This should take a few minutes.

cooling the beeswax

When the beeswax has cooled to the touch, remove it from the wax paper.  Set the beeswax on your cutting board.  Then, using your star cookie cutter, cut out 1 star shape.

making a star embed

Next, place the star into your candle jar.  Try to center the star between your candle wicks.  Press firmly to allow the beeswax to adhere to the side of the jar.

adhere the star

Once the star is adhered, get your two disposable spoons and white and red wax.  Starting with the red wax, place several scoops into the jar.  Then, gently flatten the wax across the bottom of the jar.  Once you are happy with the amount of red, repeat with the white wax.

layering your candle

Try to keep your layers all the same size.  You will be rotating the layers between the red and white wax.  Keep doing this until your candle is filled.  Remember to straighten your wicks as you work your way through filling the jar.

unique candle recipe

When your candle jar is full, simply trim your excess wicking.  Then, light and enjoy your patriotic candle.

So now that you have the instructions to make your very own patriotic candle, feel free to make it your own.  Really, once the beeswax is colored, scented, and cooled; any other portion of this project can be made with the assistance of children.  They really have a blast cutting out the stars and filling in the layers (with adult supervision).

Alabama Gathering

Alabama soap gatheringHello everyone!

I have just recently returned from The Alabama Soap and Candle Gathering that occurred last week.

After a very long drive of 12 hours we arrived at our hotel, settled in, and got plenty of rest.  I just knew that the Alabama Gathering this year was going to be a great event for everyone attending.

The next morning, when the day arrived, we were ready to go!  As we were setting up the Natures Garden booth, our customers were so excited to see everything that we had brought.  You could actually feel the anticipation as we got everything unpacked.  There was a lot to get organized.  Once again, we brought our entire fragrance oil line containing 816 fragrance oils, our various essential oils, and even the array of  flavorings Natures Garden carries.

As for the examples of products that you can make using Natures Garden’s ingredients, we had some exciting recipes to share.  The famous Pigs In The Mud Candle was there, complete with adorable pink pig tarts.  The colorful Gummy Bear Candle made its debut.  And the show stopper, the Ducks on the Pond Candle came too.  This is a super cute combination candle using both gel and pillar of bliss wax.

As for bath and body recipes, we brought examples of two of our newest recipes.  The lovely Lavender Cold Process Soap complete with purple swirls, whipped topping, and lavender buds sprinkled on top.  And, finally the Mechanics soap.  A great and easy to make melt and pour recipe which gently exfoliates.  It seemed that many customers really liked the Mechanics soap because it was not gritty like other hand cleaners.

During the Alabama Gathering we met so many fun and fabulous people.  As for the seminars and educational classes, Amanda Stott did an amazing job teaching the art of making candle tarts.  Benjamin Aaron also gave a wonderful seminar covering his adventures of teaching soap making for nonprofit outreach.  And, another one of my favorite speakers from the Alabama Gathering was Deborah Bruijn.  She spoke about skincare and the amazing benefits Jojoba provides.

I truly had an amazing time at the Alabama Gathering.  I enjoyed meeting a ton of new and excited homemade crafters.  They just brought so much energy and excitement to this gathering that I did not want to see it end.

In closing, I have to stress that if you have never been to the Alabama Gathering, you should plan to go.  Next year, the event will be taking place June 12th and 13th, 2015.

I also want to extend a huge THANK YOU to the Alabama Soap and Candle Association for the amazing 2 days we got to spend with all of you!  Well y’all until next time!

Have a fabulous Day!

CP Soap Frosting

Saturday, June 7th, 2014

cp soap frostingHow to Make CP Soap Frosting

Recently, we tried a new endeavor… CP Soap Frosting.  To be completely honest, this was not our first time attempting this recipe.  It did take a few times to perfect the recipe, consistency, and steps.

If you are interested in making approximately one pound of your own Soap Frosting this recipe is for you!  Everything will be spelled out from ingredients to weights, and will even include steps and pictures.  Now, if you want to frost soap cupcakes or cakes (or really anything you want to frost), you will need to have your bases already poured and set up ready to go.

So, if you are ready to get started… lets go.  As always before starting any cold process soap recipe, you will want to properly clean and sanitize your work area; as well as put on your safety gear.  This will include safety goggles, safety mask, and safety gloves.

Here are the ingredients and weight you will need to make CP Soap Frosting:

For the lye water
129 grams of distilled water
53 grams of lye

As for the soaping ingredients:
170 grams of Palm Oil
170 grams of Coconut Oil 76
21 grams of a body safe fragrance oil

Please Note:  For this recipe, we selected Almond Marzipan Fragrance Oil.  This is because the fragrance is considered a Perfect Pour with no discoloration.  Since we wanted to show both white CP Soap Frosting and colored CP Soap Frosting, we wanted a fragrance oil that did not have a high vanillin content (which may cause discoloration in soap).

If you are interested in coloring your CP Soap Frosting, any of the FUN Soap Colorants will do the trick.  To view the full list of all of the FUN Soap Colorants that Natures Garden has to offer, please click on this link.

Also, it should be noted that you will NOT be using a stick blender for this recipe.  Instead, you will need a hand held mixer with either whisk attachments or beater attachments.

Now, for the CP Soap Frosting, room temperature is the key to mastering the frosting.  This is why your soaping ingredients typically consist of butters and oils that are of a solid consistency at room temperature.

So, now that you have some of the basics down, here is the rest:

soap frosting lye water

Step 1:  You will want to make your lye solution.  To accomplish this, using two separate containers, weigh out the lye in one and the water in another.  Then, take the 2 bowls into a well ventilated area.  Sprinkle a small amount of lye into the water an stir with the spatula.  Repeat this manner until all of the lye is in the water.  Stir until you can not feel the granules anymore.  Next, set aside to cool.

soap frosting ingredients
Step 2:
Now, weigh out your two soaping ingredients.  You do not want your ingredients to be in liquid form, but instead more of a soft butter consistency.  (You an easily accomplish this by allowing your ingredients to set out at room temperature.)

room temperature lye water

Step 3:  Allow your lye solution to reach room temperature as well.

beat the soap frosting ingredients

Step 4:  While you are waiting for your lye solution to cool, use your hand held mixer to start blending the two ingredients together.  You will sporadically want to use your spatula to rotate the mixture.  Stop beating when you are able to achieve peaks in the mixture.

adding the lye water and beating

Step 5:  When the lye solution is at room temperature, you will now add it in small increments to the soaping ingredients.  You will want to aim for about 20 grams at a time.  While you are adding the lye solution to the soaping ingredients, keep mixing the mixture with your hand held through out the whole process.  When the mixture is able to create peaks again, it is time to add more lye solution.  Keep repeating this process until all of the lye solution has been added and incorporated.  This will take some time.

adding scent to soap frosting

Step 6:  When your mixture is ready, add the fragrance oil.  Once all of the fragrance oil has been added and the mixture is thick enough to be peaked, you can stop using the hand held mixer (unless you are coloring).

adding color to soap frosting

Step 7:  Optional:  If you are adding a FUN Soap Colorant to the mixture, you will do it in this step.  Once added, you will mix the colorant in with the hand held mixer.

filling your frosting bags

Step 8:  Now that your CP Soap Frosting is ready, it is time to bag it up.  If you have a decorating bag, these work great; especially if you are going with a special tip look.  If you do not have a decorating bag, simply place an open Ziploc bag inside a cup.  The mouth of the cup should align with the opening of the Ziploc.  Then, you can easily scoop the soap into the bag.  Seal the bag, and cut the tip of one corner to create an opening.

frosting your cupcake soap

Step 9:  Start to frost!

Step 10:  Once all of the soap that you are frosting is frosted, all your soap to cure.

That is it.  Like mentioned earlier, you can cater your CP Soap Frosting to be any color, or scent (with a body safe fragrance oil).  You will just want to double check the vanillin content and the soaping results to know exactly how the fragrance is going to behave in your soap batter.

Happy Soaping!

Lavender Soap

lavender scent Making Lavender Soap

For us, making cold process soap is almost a daily occurrence.  With all of the fragrance oils that are tested, new samples that are tested, and fun recipes that are made, the creative team at Natures Garden is always busy doing something.

A few days ago, we wanted to make a Lavender Soap Recipe (with cold process).  Through our brainstorming, we created a great recipe, with a cool design concept that even included sprinkling a small amount of lavender flowers to the top of the soap.

Seeing that Lavender Martini Fragrance Oil was not yet used for a recipe, we thought it would be the perfect fit.  The soaping results showed that it was a “Perfect Pour.  No ricing, no acceleration.  Very great unique scent.  No discoloration.  Scent is clean.”  So, soaping with this oil was not going to pose any issues.

To use one word to describe working with this fragrance oil, it would be flawless.  The color design for our recipe contained 4 colors including: a light purple, medium purple, dark purple, and finally white.  Not only did the fragrance allow for ample time to get these colors achieved, but we were also able to accomplish a gorgeous in the pot swirl too.

So now, since we are on the topic of how wonderful this fragrance oil was to work with, it should also be mentioned how fabulously strong and amazing this scent smells.  Once the Lavender Martini scent was in the soap batter, it seemed to fill the work area instantaneously.  The lavender martini aroma was strong!  We were all super excited as to how this soap loaf recipe was going to turn out.  Even just walking past the loaf as it set up was a foreshadow of just how aromatic the scent was.

The next day, we unmolded and braced ourselves for the soap slicing.  As we sliced the soap loaf, it seemed that with each slice the smell of lavender martini was more intense in the air.  This recipe was just an overall win in every category!

So, if you are looking for a great cold process soap scent, and your interest is peaked in giving this fragrance oil a try in cold process soap, we highly suggest you do.  Like we mentioned earlier, we soap a lot of fragrances, but this one was definitely eye opening.

lavender soap recipeTo view the Lavender Cold Process Soap in its entirety, please click on this link.  It will provide you with the recipe weights, and step by step instruction.  But, this fragrance will work for your own recipe too if you wanted to go that route.

Happy Lavender Soaping!
