Further, there are all kinds of different ways to flavor, sweeten, and color your various lip balm recipes. So, you can use these cosmetic supplies to create fantastic lip balm recipes that both look and feel amazing.

Lip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm From ScratchLip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm From Scratch

One way that you can create your own lip balm is from scratch. This means starting with the simplest ingredients to completely form the lip balm that you want. While you will have to either find a previously formulated recipe or create your own lip balm recipe, it is worth the effort to make a lip care recipe that is exactly what you need. You can either use one of our step-by-step recipes or you can create one of your very own. Further, you could even start with one of our recipes and change out some of the oils for ones that your prefer. Then, you will need to use a double boiler to melt your various oils and butters. After, all your cosmetic oils and butters are melted you can add in your choice of lip balm flavors and lip tint before you pour the mix into the lip balm tubes. So, you are able to create a recipe that is exactly what you need from the texture and hydration level to the color and flavor.

Lip Balm Supplies: Butters and Carrier Oils

If you are making your lip balm from scratch, then you will need to incorporate some Natural Butters and Natural Fixed Oils into your recipe. These cosmetic ingredients are essential for hydrating and rejuvenating your lips. Plus, you can add more to create a highly moisturizing lip balm or less to create a daily lip balm. One recipe that we have created from scratch is the Kahlua and Cream Lip Balm Recipe, which uses skin nourishing butters and oils that will protect your lips. The Coconut Oil is an oil that is smooth and sinks into the skin. Also, the Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter are butters can will help protect your lips for even longer.

Lip Balm Supplies: Hard Cosmetic Wax

Not only do you want cosmetic ingredients that will rejuvenate your lips, but you will need an ingredient that will help hold your lip balm ingredients together. If you don’t add a cosmetic wax to your recipe, it will likely be too soft. So, you will absolutely need a cosmetic wax if you are going to use a lip balm tube. The Beeswax White Pastilles is used most commonly and is useful for adding some integrity to your lip balm. This is the cosmetic wax that is added to our lip balm base recipe. Another option that you can choose is Candelilla Wax, which is a perfect wax for anyone avoiding animal products. So, this was the perfect cosmetic wax to add to our Vegan Lip Butter Recipe or to use when formulating your own vegan lip balm.

Lip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm BaseLip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm Base

One convenient cosmetic ingredient that you can use with your homemade lip balm supplies is the wholesale lip balm base. Although you are still able to customize your lip balm, you can start with an easy to use lip balm base to make the process easier. So, you can simply melt the base in the microwave using short intervals. Then, you can add your colorants and lip balm flavorings. Using this amazing lip balm base, you don’t have to create a recipe from scratch, but you can still customize your product. So, you can easily create some fantastic homemade lip care that looks and tastes exactly how you want.

Lip Balm Supplies: Lip TintsLip Balm Supplies: Lip Tints

Also, you may want to add a lip tint to your lip balm creation. First, you can add one of our lip tints. We used these lip balm colorants to create our Chocolate Covered Strawberries Lip Balm Recipe as well as our Lipstick from Scratch Recipe. So, you can use these colorants to create a fun design or to add a bit of color to your lips. Additionally, you can use some herbs to naturally color your lip balm recipes. We used some beet root powder to create our Natural Beet Root Lip Gloss Recipe. So, you can use some pigmented herbs and spices to create a natural color to your homemade recipes.

Lip Balm Supplies: Mica Dust PowderLip Balm Supplies: Mica Dust Powder

Additionally, you can use mica to enhance your lip balm recipes. This way you lips will have a little shimmer and shine! We included the Diamond Dust Mica in our Kiss of Death Lip Venom Recipe. Additionally, you can use the Gold Mica Pigment in some of your very own lip balm recipes. These are a perfect way to glam up your lip balm recipes without adding any lip tint. However, adding some sparkle and shine to your pigmented lip balm would be even prettier!

Lip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm FlavoringsLip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm Flavorings

Another great addition that you can make to your lip balm recipes is flavoring. First, you can try out one of our many lip balm flavorings. We used the scrumptious Blue Raspberry Slushie flavor in our Natural Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe. Additionally, you can use some essential oils to create delicious lip balm flavors. For example, we used lavender essential oil to create our White Chocolate Lavender Lip Balm Recipe. However, you will need to check the IFRA sheet to ensure that your essential oil choice is safe to be used in lip balms. Further, we wouldn’t recommend using photosensitive essential oils. Also, you can use natural lip balm flavors, like chocolate or honey. We tried out these sweeteners in our Honey Vanilla Lip Balm Recipe and in our Chocolate Avocado Lip Balm Recipe.

Lip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm Sweeteners

Not only would you want to flavor your lip balm, but you may want to add a sweetener as well. There are a few sweeteners that you can add to your recipe to enhance the flavor. Although these ingredients won’t necessarily flavor your lip balm, it is perfect for sweetening the flavor you added. Also, you can use these ingredients to sweeten a plain or natural batch of lip balm. Regardless of how you want to flavor your lip balm, a sweetener is a perfect way to enhance it. So, check out the sweet options available in Natures Garden’s lip balm supplies.

Lip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm SweetenerLip Balm Supplies: Stevia

One way that you can sweeten your lip balm flavorings is with some powdered Stevia. We used this lip balm supply to create the Monkey Farts Lip Balm Recipe, which sweetens the scrumptious, tropical flavor of our Monkey Farts Flavoring. In this recipe we crushed the powder a bit more and then added a small amount to our lip balm. This helps to reduce the gritty texture that can occur by adding too much. But, you can use more of the Stevia if you would like to add some exfoliating power to your recipe.

Lip Balm Supplies: SorbitolLip Balm Supplies: Sorbitol

Additionally, you can try adding Sorbitol to your lip balm recipes. While there are many people that use and enjoy this sweetener in their lip balm recipes, we at Natures Garden prefer to use Stevia or a natural sweetener like chocolate. There are many that know exactly how to use this cosmetic ingredient, but it can be tricky to mix with the oils and butters. This complication is due to this sweetener being polar, which doesn’t mix with the non polar oils and butters. So, you will need an emulsifier and an understanding of cosmetic checmistry.

Lip Balm Supplies: SugarLip Balm Supplies: Sugar

Also, you can use real sugar to sweeten your lip balm recipes. Just know that adding sugar will likely make your lip balm gritty. So, you will only want to add sugar if you want to create a lip scrub. We used some white granulated sugar to create our Natural Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe. If you want to create a slightly softer sugar scrub, then you should try using brown sugar. We used this softer sugar in our Creme Brulee Lip Scrub Recipe, which creates a nice lip exfoliator.

Lip Balm Supplies: Disposable PipetsLip Balm Supplies: Disposable Pipettes

Another lip balm supply that you are going to want to have for your recipes is a disposable pipette. With other bath and body recipes you can pour your recipe into the containers. However, many of the lip balm containers are too small for you to be accurate. So, you can use these pipettes to fill your packaging supplies. This prevents you from wasting the lip balm that would miss the containers. Plus, you have more control, which is important for clear lip balm pots. Otherwise, it would be impossible to make straight layers. So, these are a crucial supply for creating lip balm effectively.

Lip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm PackagingLip Balm Supplies: Lip Balm Packaging

After you have created your lip balm, you are going to need to be able to package it! We have all kinds of wholesale lip balm containers that you can use for your lip balm recipes. First, we have lip balm pots and tins. We have a few different kinds of sizes and shapes that you can choose from to create the perfect lip balm recipes. We have things like the 0.35 oz Lip Slider Tins, the 6ml and 10 ml lip balm jars, the tri cosmetic container, and so many more options!

Another choice that you have for your lip care recipes is lip balm tubes. You can try out the regular lip balm tubes or a small deodorant stick. While a deodorant stick may sound like it would be too big for lip balm, it is actually pretty small. In fact, this tube is about the same size as a regular lip balm tube. The only difference is that the travel size deodorant tube has a more oval shape. Further, we have roll on lip gloss tubes, which would be perfect to add to your lip gloss making supplies! Check out all the options you have available at Natures Garden on the Lip Balm Containers page of our website.

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Essential Oils

While some essential oils are fine to put into lip balm, others are not. Just like how some plants in nature are poisonous to eat, some essential oils can’t be eaten. You can use the IFRA sheet to determine how much is safely allowed in lip balm, as it is category 1. But, we find that a good rule is that if it allows for less than 1% then you may not want to have it on your lips even if IFRA technically allows it. Also, you may personally have an allergy to the essential oil. So, you may want to do a test patch on a small area of skin to see whether you are sensitive.

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Lavender Essential OilWhat Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Lavender Essential Oil

First, we can use the Lavender Essential Oil. This lovely essential oil has a sweet, fruity aroma that is absolutely scrumptious. So, you can use this oil, like we did with out White Chocolate Lavender Lip Balm Recipe, to naturally flavor your lip balm recipe!

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Peppermint Essential OilWhat Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Peppermint Essential Oil

Another idea for flavoring is the cool and refreshing Peppermint Essential Oil. This delightful oil is perfect for adding some mint freshness to your lip care products. If you are interested in using this flavor oil, then you may want to know that IFRA states that a maximum of 5% can be used for your lip products.

If you want to find more essential oils that you can use, then check out the Essential Oils page on our website! You can find out which are body safe and their usage rate there!

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: How to Sweeten Your Lip Balm

While flavoring oils are amazing, sometimes you just want to add a bit of extra sweetness. Not only can these sweeteners be added to enhance your flavoring oil, but these sweeteners can be used to naturally flavor lip balm all on its own! It’s all up to your and what you want from your lip balm.

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: SteviaWhat Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Stevia

First, we have Stevia Powder, which is a natural sweetener extracted from the Stevia plant of the Asteraceae family. This sweetener is often used as a cane sugar substitute because it is thought to have no calories and taste even sweeter than sugar. This added sweetness is especially useful for lip balm because we can get a sweet flavor without adding enough to be considered a lip scrub. While scrubs can be useful, you don’t want every lip balm to be gritty. Stevia is used to sweeten the lip balm.  This sweetness also enhances the flavor of the lip balm.

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: HoneyWhat Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Honey

Also, you can use a natural sweetener like honey. Not only will adding this ingredient sweeten your lip balm, but it has benefits for your lips as well. Honey is known for helping lock in moisture and protect your skin and lips. Plus, it can be used to help brighten your lips or even make them look bigger and more plump.

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Dark Chocolate WafersWhat Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: Dark Chocolate Wafers

Another perfect additive for lip balm is chocolate. What could be better than the rich taste of dark chocolate in your homemade lip balm recipes? Absolutely nothing! Chocolate is delicious and perfect for anyone that wants to naturally flavor lip balm. Adding some Dark Chocolate Wafers to your recipe will provide a fantastic taste and help keep your lips feeling soft.

What Can I Use to Flavor Lip Balm: History of Lip Balm

Lip balm is essential for keeping your lips moisturized and healthy, but it wasn’t always around. In fact, it was invented in the early 1880s by Dr. C.D. Fleet. But, this lip balm looked more like a wickless candle then what we see today. Further, flavored Chapstick wasn’t even an option until 1971! If you want to learn more about the history of lip balm or are curious about the history of Carmex, then check out The History of Chapstick – The History of Carmex by ThoughtCo.
