Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: A Closer Look at the Ingredients

Before we begin creating our chocolate body butter, let’s look at the ingredients.  Below is a closer look at each butter and oil used to create this recipe.  We will also talk about additional items we will be adding to make the “chocolate” part of our body butter.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Mango Butter

Mango butter is an exotic, luxury oil, which melts on the skin; providing skin softening and moisturizing qualities.  Mango butter is obtained from the kernels of the mango tree.  Mango butter is used in lip balms, lip gloss, soaps, lotions, scrubs, and many other bath and body recipes. It is said to reduce the signs of aging by reducing wrinkle formation.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Cocoa Butter Golden Natural

This particular cocoa butter is not deodorized; meaning that it has a chocolate-like aroma.  Cocoa butter is a very hard, saturated fat. It is considered a luxury butter that is used in lotions, lip balms, lip gloss, scrubs, massage bars, soaps, and other bath and body products.   It is used in conjunction with unsaturated oils like olive oil or castor oil, or with more sticky ingredients such as shea butter and lanolin when making soap.  Using too much cocoa butter in soap will result in a dry, exceptionally hard bar of soap.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil contains only the medium-chain triglycerides of coconut oil, making it a liquid at relatively low temperatures.  It is a very stable oil.  Fractionated coconut oil has an indefinite shelf life and is a light, non-staining,  non-greasy, colorless oil. It is great for use in massage, toiletries and soap. Natures Garden’s fractionated coconut oil is a great carrier oil for essential oils. In addition, fractionated coconut oil can be used in lotions, lip applications, cosmetics, creams, bath oils, massage oils, bath salts, and soap. Fractionated coconut oil can easily substitute sweet almond oil in recipes.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Meadowfoam Seed Oil readily sinks into the skin; not leaving the skin feeling oily.  Meadowfoam Seed Oil helps to repair dry, damaged skin. Due to its high levels of natural antioxidants, meadowfoam oil has a long shelf life and is not prone to rancidity.  Meadowfoam oil is also known for its UV light protection properties, making it a fabulous oil to include in your skincare formulations.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Natural Vitamin E Oil

(Tocopherol T-50)-  The purest form of natural vitamin E available (from plant sources only). This is not tocopherol acetate, the form found in many vitamin E capsules.  Vitamin E is required in most cosmetic formulations in very small amounts  in order to prevent oils from oxidizing.  When fixed oils oxidize, they develop a very rancid smell, and can turn your products brown in color, which will ruin your finished products.  Prevent this from occurring by adding vitamin E to your formulations.  Our vitamin E oil is also heat stable, and is added during the oil phase of your recipes.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Organic Cocoa Powder

Organic cocoa powder is a fabulous addition to your cosmetics and soap recipes.  Cacao beans are rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and pantothenic acid.  They are also rich in the following minerals:  magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese and potassium.  Cocao beans contain caffeine, which is actually beneficial to the skin.  How does chocolate lip balm sound to you?  Chocolate facial masks?  Yummy!

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Arrowroot Powder

Arrowroot powder is a white, silky powder that is found in most natural body powder recipes and deodorants.  It will give your recipes a silky finish.  Arrowroot is used in cosmetics as a thickener.  Unlike most thickeners, arrowroot has the ability to thicken at room temperature, and at varying ph levels.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Kickin Cocoa Fragrance Oil

Kickin Cocoa fragrance oil by Natures Garden is Gourmet Hot Chocolate with a fancy twist!  Kickin Cocoa scent begins with a top note of rum; middle notes of whipped cream, coconut, and creamy caramel; and base notes of cocoa, coffee, vanilla, and chocolate.  An NG Original Fragrance!

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: The Difference Between A Body Butter, a Cream, and a Lotion

We receive numerous phone call and emails regarding body butters.  However, most often, the question is what is the difference between a body butter and a cream.  So, let’s talk about those differences.

First, let’s look at a body butter.  A true body butter does not typically contain water.  You may also notice that it will often be both thicker and harder.  This is due to the fact that it does not contain water.  While it may feel hard to the touch, you will also notice that your natural body heat will quickly melt the butter.  This is what a body butter is meant to do.

Next, let’s talk about a body cream.  A body cream is similar to a body butter.  However, it isn’t quite the same.  A body cream will contain water.  So, essentially, it is a very thick lotion.  It will not contain as much water as lotion.  Since it contains water, you will need an emulsifier to create.

Finally, we will briefly talk about lotions.  Lotions are similar to creams.  Generally speaking, they contain more water when compared to a cream.  They will not be as heavy as a cream so it will typically absorb into your skin more quickly than a cream.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Total Recipe Weights

78 grams Mango Butter
156 grams Cocoa Butter
102 grams Fractionated Coconut Oil
65 grams Meadowfoam Seed Oil
10 grams Kickin Cocoa Fragrance Oil
10 grams Arrowroot Powder
5 grams Vitamin E Oil
5 grams Organic Cocoa Powder

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Prepare Your Oils

We will begin by preparing our oils for our chocolate body butter recipe.  You will need to weigh out 78 grams Mango Butter, 156 grams Cocoa Butter, 102 grams Fractionated Coconut Oil, and 65 grams Meadowfoam Seed Oil.

Now, you will need to create a double boiler.  So, in a large pot, add a few inches of water.  Place your pot over medium heat on your stove top.  Then, in a smaller pot, add your weighed out oils and butters.  Place your smaller pot inside the larger pot on your stove.  Allow your oils and butters to melt slowly.  You will need to stir them occasionally so that they melt evenly and completely.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Adding the Remaining Ingredients

Next, remove the melted butters and oils from the heat.  Then, we will be adding the remaining ingredients.  So, first pour your melted oils and butters into a clean empty bowl.  Then, add 10 grams Arrowroot Powder, 5 grams Vitamin E Oil, and 5 grams Organic Cocoa Powder.  Also, add 10 grams of Natures Garden’s Kickin Cocoa Fragrance Oil.  Finally, stir the ingredients until they are fully blended.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Cooling the Body Butter

The last step before adding the body butter to the jars.  You simply need to allow your body butter to cool.  This can be done one of two ways.  You can either place the bowl in the fridge or you can place your bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice.  However, as the mixture is cooling, you will want to use a hand mixer to mix the ingredients.  This should be done about every 20 minutes.  You will want to continue to do this until your mixture is no longer fluid.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Placing the Body Butter in the Jars

Lastly, we will begin placing the body butter in the jars.  You will simply need to scoop the body butter into 4 ounce jars.  Our chocolate body butter recipe will fill a total of 4 jars.  Once you have filled the jars, you can place a white dome lid on top.

If you’re anything like me, after reading this, you will definitely be ready to indulge in a delicious chocolate treat.  So, why not give this chocolate mousse recipe a try.  I found this fabulous chocolaty  treat on Creations by Kara.  It’s a simple three ingredient recipe.  This recipe will be ready in no time!

Almond Body Cream a Closer Look at the Ingredients Used

Almond Fragrance Oil is amazing for a lotion.  It is an almond scent that is similar to a popular brand.  Our almond scented oil is a true almond aroma and a Natures Garden best selling fragrance oil!

Shea butter not only naturally contains vitamins, it also acts a humectant. In addition, it is often used in the medical industry as a base for many ointments due to its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti inflammatory properties.

Sweet Almond Oil is light, moisturizing, and easily absorbed into the skin. This means you will remain moisturized without the extra grease some creams and lotions can leave.

Macadamia Nut Oil is wonderfully nourishing for dry skin, leaving it soft and smooth.  In addition, it is high in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. It also has high levels of antioxidants. Finally, just like sweet almond oil, it is easily absorbed by the skin, without the greasy feel.

Silky Emulsifying Wax is an emulsifier that helps your oils and butters mix with your water based ingredients.  In addition, this particular emulsifier will leave your skin feeling silkier compared to other types of emulsifiers.

Vitamin E Oil is used in this lotion recipe as an antioxidant. So, what exactly does this mean? Oils, like the carrier oils used in this almond body cream recipe, will go rancid and turn brown over time. Natures Garden carries pure Tocopherol T-50 vitamin E oil that is used to slow this process.

Stearic Acid is used in both creams and lotions. Stearic acid acts as a thickener in this product, and in other cosmetic recipes. Without stearic acid, this cream would not have the wonderful thickness that we love.

Optiphen preservative is used to prevent the growth of things like bacteria, yeast, and mold. Now, some believe that vitamin E oil can be used a preservative.  However, vitamin E is not a preservative, it cannot prevent bacteria growth.

Almond Body Cream RecipeAlmond Body Cream Recipe Preparations Preparations Prior to Starting

Before you start making your almond body cream recipe, make sure you have everything you need near your work station. This recipe will create five 8 ounce jars of lotion. So, you will want to get five of your 8 ounce jars out, along with five 70/400 straight smooth white lids. Additionally, you are going to want to make sure your work area, packaging materials, and equipment are cleaned and sanitized. At this time you also will want to get out any ingredients you will be using and place them in your work area. Taking these little steps ahead of time will ensure that making this recipe will go as smoothly as possible. Finally, we recommend wearing gloves, a hair net, and an apron when preparing this recipe. So, go ahead and put those on at this time.

Almond Body Cream Recipe Phase 1: The Water PhaseAlmond Body Cream Recipe Phase 1: The Water Phase

First, you will need to prepare the water needed for your homemade lotion. So, you are going to need to weigh out at least 850 grams of distilled water. While the recipe only calls for 706 grams of distilled water, you always want to account for the water that evaporates when you are heating it on your stove top. Remember, it is always better to have too much water than not enough. So, if you are over the 850 grams, that is okay, we will be weighing the portion of the water we will be using for the cream later. Now, go ahead and place the water into a pot and place the pot on the stove. Heat your water to at least 180 degrees Fahrenheit. You will need to keep the water at 180 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 20 minutes. The heat will destroy any bacteria that is in the water. After 20 minutes, you can now remove your water from the heat source. Finally, you will weigh out the water that you will be using for the almond cream. So, weigh out 706 grams of the heated distilled water from your initial 850 grams of distilled water.

Almond Body Cream Recipe Phase 2: The Oil PhaseAlmond Body Cream Recipe Phase 2: The Oil Phase

Next, weigh out all of the following ingredients: 80 grams of stearic acid, 48 grams of silky emulsifying wax, 80 grams of sweet almond oil, 36 grams of macadamia nut oil, and 20 grams of shea butter. You will be melting the oils, butters, and waxes using the double boiler method. You will need two pots, one larger than the other. Next, in the larger pot, add a few inches of tap water. Now, place the larger pot, containing the water, on the stove top over medium heat. Then, place all of your oils, butters, and waxes you weighed out into your smaller pot. Finally, put your smaller pot filled with all your weighed out ingredients into the larger pot containing the water. This will create a double boiler. Lastly, melt and heat your cream ingredients to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Be sure to stir occasionally as you are melting the ingredients.  Stirring will prevent scorching of the oils. In addition, it will ensure an even temperature throughout the waxes, butters, and oils.

Almond Body Cream Recipe Phase 3: The Mixing PhaseAlmond Body Cream Recipe Phase 3: The Mixing Phase

Once the temperatures of your water, along with your oil, wax and butter mixture are both at about 140 degrees Fahrenheit, place them both into a deep mixing bowl. For this bowl, the deeper the better so you don’t lose any of your mixture as you are blending. Now, use your stick blender to blend your water and other ingredients together. You will need to mix very well. You will find that while stick blending the ingredients, the mixture will turn white in color. This is a great sign. It means your almond body cream is starting to emulsify. Continue to stick blend until your lotion begins to emulsify.  Then, in the next step, we will be adding a few more ingredients.

Almond Body Cream Recipe Phase 4: The Cool Down PhaseAlmond Body Cream Recipe Phase 4: The Cool Down Phase

Last, are entering the final phase, phase 4. We refer to this as the cool down phase. During this phase, your handmade body cream will really begin to take shape. Allow your mixture from phase 3 to cool to 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature of the cream has cooled to this temperature, you will be adding a few more ingredients. However, first, I would like to point out the importance of temperature.  When it comes to adding you preservative, it is extremely important to pay very close attention and add it at the correct time.  If you add a preservative at temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the preservative will burn off.  This will leave your finished product unprotected.  A preservative prevents the growth of bacteria in the product.  Now, if you add the preservative below 120 degrees Fahrenheit, you may notice the preservative will separate from the lotion or cream. So, just remember to pay close attention to those temperatures and your cream will turn out perfectly!

Almond Body Cream Recipe Phase 4: The Cool Down Phase

Now, since your temperatures are correct, you are ready to add the last few ingredients. You are going to need to add 14 grams of your optiphen preservative,10 grams of vitamin E oil, and 12 grams of Natures Garden’s Almond Fragrance Oil. Once these are added, you will once again, use your stick blender to mix your ingredients together. You want to make sure you have all three ingredients mixed thoroughly and evenly into the body cream. As your almond body cream cools, it will continue to thicken to a cream consistency. You will want to stick blend the body cream periodically as the almond cream is cooling. Each time you stick blend the cream, it will get thicker. Once your almond cream reaches room temperature, it will be a thick luscious body cream.

Finally, now that your almond body cream has cooled and reached room temperature, fill each of your five 8 ounce jars and place the smooth straight lid on top of each of the jars. There are a few different ways you can fill the jars. When we created our cream, we used a bowl with a spout. So, we just simply slowly poured our cream right into the jars. Another option is using a spoon to scoop the almond body cream into each jar. Alternatively, you can also use a Ziploc bag, cutting the corner to create a decorating bag, and fill the jar that way. This homemade cream recipe will make approximately five of the 8 oz jars.

Almond Body Cream Recipe Using the LotionAlmond Body Cream Recipe Using Your Handmade Cream

When creating this body cream, we used our Almond Fragrance Oil but you can always use another body safe fragrance oil if you would like. In addition, we chose to keep the body cream its natural color. However, you can add color if you wish to. If you do decide to color this recipe, you will want to use one of our Da Bomb Soap Dyes. You will just need to add a couple drops at a time until you get the color you are looking for! Alternatively, you can infuse herbs to naturally color your homemade cream lotion. There are just so many options, you can truly make this craft unique to you!  The sky is the limit!

We hope you love Almond Body Cream Recipe as much as we do! Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Clean and Sanitize

It is imperative that you make sure your equipment and work area are clean and ready to use. First, make sure all the supplies that you will be using are sanitized and nearby for you to use when needed. Also, you should sanitize the area you will be working on, including the stove top. This way you will have a more pleasurable experience making your body butter and prevent any possible contamination of your finished product.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Creating a Double Boiler

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Creating a Double BoilerBefore you get into creating your lotion you will need to create a double boiler. Now, take your large pot and add water. You will need to add several inches. You will want enough water in the large pot to touch the bottom of the small pot. Begin heating the water on your stove top over medium heat. I should mention, you will want to make sure that you don’t have too much water in your large pot. If you have too much water in the pot, then you may have some water get into your oils. Make sure you keep an eye on the water level as you melt your oils and butters. Later, you will set the small pot into the large pot to melt your oils and butters.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Weighing Out Your Ingredients for Melting

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Weighing Out Your Ingredients for MeltingFirst, we are going to weigh out some of our ingredients. Take your scale and tare the weight of a medium-sized mixing bowl. You will need your Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Grapeseed Oil, and Apricot Kernel Oil. Weigh out and add 156 grams of the Cocoa Butter and 155 grams of the Shea Butter to your bowl. Next, weigh and add 24 grams of the Grapeseed Oil and 65 grams of the Apricot Kernel Oil to the same bowl. Set this mixture aside for now.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Melting Your Ingredients

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Melting Your IngredientsNext, you are going to melt the ingredients that you prepared in the previous step. You will need to use the double boiler you began creating earlier to melt your oils and butters.  Melting them in your double boiler will prevent scorching of the oils.  So, place your weighed out ingredients into your smaller pot.  Then, place the smaller pot into the larger pot.  Melt the mixture fully before moving to the next step.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Adding the Remaining Ingredients

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Adding the Remaining IngredientsNow, you are going to add your few remaining ingredients to the mixture. After your butters and oils are completely melted, pour the mixture back into your medium sized bowl. Then, you can add in your Vitamin E Oil and the Black Raspberry Fragrance Oil. So, tare the weight of the filled bowl on your scale. Next, add 4 grams of the Vitamin E Oil and 10 grams of the Black Raspberry Fragrance Oil to your bowl of melted butters and oils.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Cooling the Mixture

Then, you will be cooling your mixture to get it to thicken. There are two possibilities for you to do this step. The first option is that you could place the medium sized mixing bowl into a bowl full of ice. Alternatively, you could place the covered bowl into the fridge.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Whipping the Mixture

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Whipping the MixtureNext, you are going to whip your mixture into a body butter. After your mixture of oils and butters was cooled for 20 minutes you are going to remove it from the fridge, or ice and mix it. So, retrieve your cooled mixture and use the hand mixer for a few minutes. Then, place the bowl back in the fridge or the ice bath for 20 more minutes. Repeat these steps until your mixture looks white and as creamy as whipped butter. Also, this will take a few cooling and mixing cycles until this point is reached.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Packaging Your Body Butter

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Packaging Your Body ButterFinally, you can fill your jars with the finished body butter. Now, open your four jars to get ready. Take your metal spoon and start scooping the body butter into the jars. Be sure to pack the body butter in well and avoid the possible air bubbles. The finished black raspberry vanilla body butter will fill all four jars. Once you have filled your jars, place a lid on each one. Now, your finished products are ready to use!
