Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe

Our next recipe from Natures Garden is a bubbling bath salts recipe.  With St. Patty’s Day right around the corner, we really thought you would enjoy this recipe.  We’ve scented it with Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil and added a couple different types of cosmetic salts.  In addition, we added some fun layers to give our layered bath salts some added interest.  Finally, we’ve added sodium cocoyl isethionate, which just happens to be my absolute favorite ingredients.  If you have tried adding it to your products yet, you are missing out.  SCI will leave your skin so soft and silky, it is AMAZING!  I consider this ingredient a must have for those creating their own bath and body products.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a gentle surfactant derived from coconut. It can be used in a variety of cosmetic recipes. Sodium Cocoyl Isethioniate (SCI) acts as a foaming and cleansing ingredient. SCI leaves your skin feeling soft and silky. This is an ingredient used in products like soap, bath bombs, bubble bars, and shampoo.  Recommended usage rate: 3%-20%

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Dead Sea Salt High Mineral Fine GroundBubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Dead Sea Salt High Mineral Fine Ground

The Dead Sea is known for its Dead Sea salt; which is said to help heal the body.  Dead Sea salt contains the following beneficial minerals:  Potassium, Magnesium, Bromide, and Calcium Chloride.  The magnesium found in Dead Sea salt helps to calm the nervous system, and helps combat aging, water retention, and stress. Potassium provides the body with energy.  Bromides help to reduce muscle tension.  Calcium increases circulation, and helps prevent water retention. Dead Sea salt is used to make scented bath salts, in some cosmetics, and to make soap salt bars.

Hawaiian black sea salt has a brilliant black color and silky texture.  The salt is from the Pacific sea, and is combined with activated charcoal. This compliments the natural salt flavor and adds numerous health benefits to the salt.  This salt is considered Kosher, all natural.

Mica adds shimmer to your body and bath products. Mica can also be used in glycerin soap and gel wax to create a pearl appearance. A little bit goes a long way! Our mica is cosmetic grade; safe for use in lip products.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Total Recipe Weights

410 grams Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate- SCI
420 grams Dead Sea Salt
60 grams Hawaiian Black Salt Coarse Ground
41 grams Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil
4 grams Kelly Green FUN Soap Colorant
4 grams of 24K Gold Mica Pigment

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Weighing Out the Hawaiian Black Salt

To begin, you will need a small bowl.  Then, weigh out 60 grams of the coarse Hawaiian Black Salt.  I chose to leave this portion scent free.  Since it is black, I worried the oil might cause the activated charcoal that is naturally present in the salt to bleed into other layers.  So, simply weigh out the salt and set the bowl aside.  We will need it when we begin layering our bubbling bath salts recipe.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Weighing Out the Dead Sea Salt

First, you will need a deep mixing bowl.  You will need to weigh out 420 grams of the Dead Sea salt.  If you notice any clumps in the salt, use your hands to break them up.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Adding the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate

Now, we will be adding the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, or SCI, to the mixture.  So, tare out your scale and add 410 grams of the SCI.  Again, if you find any clumps, be sure to break them up.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Adding the Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil

The next step is adding the fragrance oil.  You want to add your fragrance oil directly to the same mixing bowl.  So, to your mixing bowl, add 41 grams of Natures Garden’s Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil.  Then, using your hands, mix the ingredients together.  Continue to mix until everything is evenly and fully combined.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Separating the Bath Salts

Next, we will begin separating our bath salts.  You will two additional bowls.  In the first bowl, add 208 grams of the salt mixture.   To the second bowl, you will also add 208 grams of the salt mixture.  The remaining salt mixture can stay in the same bowl.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Coloring the Bath Salts

Our layered bubbling bath salts recipe will be colored in four different ways.  First, we will use a FUN Soap Colorant from Natures Garden.  Then, we will leave one layer its natural color.  Our third layer in the foaming bath salts will be colored with a shimmering 24K gold mica pigment.  Lastly, our final layer is our Hawaiian black salt.  Hawaiian black salt is naturally colored with activated charcoal, so we will not need to color that layer either.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Coloring the Green Bath Salts

We will begin with the bowl of our largest portion of bath salts.  Your largest portion of the bath salts will be colored with the Kelly green FUN Soap Colorant from Natures Garden.  So, to the largest portion of bath salts, add 4 grams of the Kelly green FUN Soap Colorant.  Then, use your hands to mix the colorant completely with the salt mixture.  Also, make sure the mixture is free of any clumps.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Coloring the Gold Bath Salts

Next, you will begin coloring your gold bath salts.  So, in the bowl containing one of the two smaller portions of bath salts, we will add mica.  To this bowl, add 4 grams of your 24K gold mica pigment from Natures Garden.  Then, mix the mica into the bath salts using your hands.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Uncolored Bath Salts

Next, you simply need to know that the remaining smaller bowl of uncolored bath salts will be left as it is.  However, I do suggest mixing the the bath salts with your hands at this time.  As you are mixing, check for any clumps.  If you find clumps break them up before we begin layering our bath salts in our jars.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Coarse Hawaiian Black Salt

Finally, since Hawaiian black salt is already black in color, we will not need to do anything with the salt.  It is naturally perfect just the way it is!

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Prepare Your Jars

Before we begin packaging our layered bath salts, we will need to prepare our jars.  This recipe will make four 8 ounce jars of bubbling bath salts.  So, go ahead and get your 8 ounce jars out at this time.  Place all four in front of you.  You do not need your lids at this time.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Layering the Bubbling Bath Salts

Now, we will begin layering the bubbling bath salts.  While we use four different colors, most colors will be used multiple times.  We used two layers of green, two layers of white, and two layers of gold.  The black will be layer a single layer right in the center of the jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The First Green Layer

We will begin with our first green layer.  Start by putting a layer of green bath salts on the bottom of each of your jars.  When looking at your jar, this layer should be about 1/4″ wide.  Once each of your four jars has a green layer, you are ready to move to the next layer.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The First White Layer

Our next layer will be the uncolored bath salts.  This layer should be about half as thick as your green layer.  Go ahead and place a white layer directly on top of your green layer.  Place a white layer in each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The First Gold Layer

Now, you will add your first gold layer.  The gold layer should be just as thick as the white layer.  So go ahead and add a layer of your gold bath salts to each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Black Salt Layer

Finally, you will be adding the black salt layer.  The layer of black salt should be right in the center of your jar.  So, go ahead and add a thin black layer to each jar.  You will end up adding 15 grams of Hawaiian black salt to each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Second Gold Layer

Next, we will be adding our second gold layer of bath salts.  So, add a second layer of gold bath salts to each jar, directly on top of the black layer.  This layer should be the same thickness as your first gold layer.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Second White Layer

Now, we will be adding the second white layer.  So, go ahead and add a second layer of white bubbling bath salts.  Again, this layer should be the same thickness of your first white layer.  Remember, add a layer to each of the four jars before moving on.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Second Green Layer

Finally, we will add our second green layer.  This is the layer that will fill the remaining portion of our jars.  Once you have filled all of your jars, go ahead and place one of your black lids on top of each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe:  Using Your Layered Bath Salts

Lastly, let’s talk about using your bath salts.  Bath salts really are simple to use.  While many bath salts are simply composed of various salts, like Epsom Salt, Dead Sea Salt, or even Himalayan Pink Salt, this particular recipe is a little bit different.  Our bath salt recipe includes SCI.  So, in order to get the best results, you want to add a few scoops of the bath salts directly under your warm running bath water.  As you can see, not only will you get the benefits of the salts, you also will enjoy a wonderful bubble bath!

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars RecipeBasil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe

Our next project is a bubble bar recipe.  Our basil sage mint bubble bars recipe uses Natures Garden’s Basil Sage Mint Fragrance Oil.  We also incorporated ground basil and peppermint powder.  This bubble bar consists of three layers and uses sodium cocoyl isethionate instead of SLS.  Sodium cocoyl isethionate, or SCI, is a gentle surfactant that comes from coconut.  It is the perfect ingredient to give you perfectly pampered skin.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Basil Sage Mint Fragrance Oil

Before we begin, let’s talk about Basil Sage Mint Fragrance Oil.  If you haven’t smelled this one before, here is what it smells like.  Basil Sage Mint fragrance oil by Natures Garden is a garden fresh medley of basil leaves, clary sage and peppermint sprigs accented by hints of citrus zests, fresh spring flowers, and soft, soothing musk.  It is a wonderful and unique combination that smells AMAZING!

Top Notes:  orange, lemon, peppermint sprigs

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Total Recipe Amounts and Weights

First, let’s talk about the amounts of each item we will be using.  We should note that while we give you both the weight and volume measurements, we highly recommend using a scale.  By using a scale the measurements will be more precise amounts.

410 grams (2 cups) Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
460 grams (2 cups) Sodium Bicarbonate- Baking Soda
224 grams (2/3 cup) Cream of Tartar
72 grams (2/3 cup) Corn Starch
200 grams (2/3 cup) Vegetable Glycerin
24 grams (2 TBSP) Meadowfoam Seed Oil
14 grams Basil Sage Mint Fragrance Oil
4 grams FUN Soap Colorant Neon Green
10 grams FUN Soap Colorant Kelly Green
10 drops FUN Soap Colorant Lime Green

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prior to Starting

Prior to starting, you want to prepare your work area and supplies.  So, clean your work area.  Also, get out all of your supplies and ingredients listed above.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe:  Prepare Your Dry Ingredients

First, we will weigh out our dry ingredients. You will need a deep mixing bowl.  Then, to this bowl, add 460 grams of baking soda, 410 grams sodium cocoyl isethionate, 72 grams of corn starch, and 224 grams cream of tartar.  Now, with gloved hands, mix the dry ingredients together completely.  While you are mixing, break up any clumps you find in the mixture.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare Your Wet IngredientsBasil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare Your Wet Ingredients

Next, in a separate bowl, weigh out your wet ingredients.  In your clean mixing bowl weigh out 200 grams of vegetable glycerin.  Then, add 24 grams of your meadowfoam seed oil and 14 grams of Natures Garden’s Basil Sage Mint Fragrance Oil.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Mix Everything TogetherBasil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Mix Everything Together

At this stage, we will mix our dry ingredients and wet ingredients together.  It is easiest to add your wet ingredients to the dry ingredients.  So, go ahead and add your wet ingredients to your dry ingredients.  Then, once again, use your hands to mix the ingredients together.  Continue to mix until everything is thoroughly combined.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Separate Your Bubble Bar DoughBasil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Separate Your Bubble Bar Dough

Now, we will separate your dough.  For this bubble bar recipe, we will create three colors.  We will have a total of three layers, each a different color.  So, you will need two additional bowls.  In each of the two bowls, add 468 grams of the bubble bar dough.  Leave the remaining dough in the original bowl.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare your Mint Green LayerBasil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare your Mint Green Layer

First, you will prepare you mint green layer.  This layer will also include ground basil.  So, to your first bowl, add 2 grams of your ground basil and 4 grams of your neon green FUN Soap Colorant from Natures Garden.  Then, with clean gloves, mix the ingredients until your colorant and basil are fully mixed.

Once you have mixed all of the ingredients together, you want to roll the dough into a ball.  You can then put it back in your mixing bowl and set the bowl aside.  Later, you will be rolling the ball out flat, just like you would cookie dough.  So, you want to make sure it is the proper consistency.  If your dough is too crumbly, you can a little more vegetable glycerin.  However, when doing this be careful not to add too much.  If you add too much, your dough will not be the proper consistency and may not setup properly.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare Your Sage Green LayerBasil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare Your Sage Green Layer

Next, you will prepare your sage green layer.  You will need your second mixing bowl.  To your second bowl, add 10 grams of the Kelly green FUN Soap colorant and 10 drops of the lime green FUN Soap Colorant from Natures Garden.  In addition, you will need to add 2 grams of peppermint powder.  Once you have added all of these ingredients, you are ready to mix.  Again, with clean gloves on your hands, mix until everything is fully incorporated.

Again, roll this color into a ball.  We will also be rolling this dough out.  So, if needed you can add a tiny bit more vegetable glycerin.  Finally, place your ball of dough into the second bowl.  Set this bowl aside as well.  We will come back to this bubble bar dough in a later step.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare Your White Layer

Next, you will need to prepare your white layer.  This white layer will be the third and final layer in our bubble bar recipe.  So, you will need the third remaining bowl of soap dough.  This bowl of dough will remain uncolored.  So, you simply need to roll it into a ball.  Finally, set this dough aside, we will come back to it.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Prepare to Roll Out Your Bubble Bar Dough

Now, before you move on, you will need to prepare to roll your bubble bar dough.  So, first, wipe down your work area.  If you are anything like me, you have little pieces of each color of your bubble bar dough in your work area.  Go ahead and clean this up at this time.  Then, lay down a piece of parchment paper that is about 12-15 inches in length.  That will give you a plenty of room to work.  Alternatively, you can use a silicone baking mat.  I chose to use a baking mat, and I placed it on a 9″ x 13″ pan so that I can easily move it if I need too.

Finally, sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on your parchment paper or mat.  This will prevent your dough from sticking to the parchment paper, and make it much easier to roll the dough.  Also, do the same with your roll pin.  I actually used my 16 ounce bottle of vegetable glycerin from Natures Garden to roll my dough out.  So, if you don’t have a rolling pin, this is totally an option.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Roll Out Your Bubble Bar Dough

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: The Mint Green Layer

Next, it is time to roll out your bubble bar dough.  We will begin with the mint green dough.  So, place the ball of mint green dough in the middle of your parchment paper or baking mat.  Then, use your hands to flatten it out a bit.

Then, use your rolling pin to roll out the dough just like you would with cookie dough.  You want to the dough to be about 1/4 inch thick and in a rectangular shape.  While the shape doesn’t have to be perfect, you want it to be as close to a rectangle as you can get it.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: The Sage Green Layer

Now, let’s roll out the sage green layer.  This layer will be rolled out right on top of the previous layer.  So, place the sage colored dough on top of the mint green layer you rolled out.  You want to make sure you place it right in the center of the previous layer.  Gently, flatten the dough.

Then, carefully, roll the sage green dough out.  You want to continue to roll until the edges of the sage colored bubble bar dough matches the edges of the mint green dough.  Once again, make sure the dough maintains that rectangular shape.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: The White Layer

Finally, we will roll out the last white layer of bubble bar dough.  So, place the white layer right on top of the sage green layer.  Again, make sure you place it in the center of the rolled out bubble bar dough.  Then, flatten the white dough slightly and begin rolling it out.  Once the white dough matches the size of the green dough, you are finished rolling out your dough.  Just make sure you continue to maintain that rectangular shape.  If needed, gently reshape it a bit.  Like I said before, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just as close as you can get it.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Roll the Bubble Bar Dough Into a Loaf

Finally, you will roll your bubble bar dough into a loaf.  So, position your dough in front of you vertically.  Then, lift up gently on the edge of your mat or parchment paper that is closest to your body.  Slowly and carefully roll the bubble bar dough into a loaf.  You will basically be rolling the dough in the same manner that you would a pumpkin roll.

Continue to roll the dough until it is completely rolled.  You may find little pieces of your dough stuck to your mat.  This happens, but I found when I first began making bubble bars this happened quite often and I often had large amounts left behind when I rolled my loaf.  However, the more I practiced creating them, the easier it became.  So, keep practicing!  After you have completely rolled your dough, if you find you have holes that need filled, you can use some of the dough that was left behind on the mat to patch the holes.  Just be sure that you smooth them out.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Finishing Your Bubble Bars

Well, we are almost done.  Now, you simply slice your bubble bars, in the same manner, you would a loaf of bread.  You want to cut it in about 1-2 inch slices. Once you have sliced them, they simply need to dry out.  And place them a couple inches apart so they can dry thoroughly.  Ours dried in about 48-72 hours.  However, I should add that climate definitely comes into play here.  It may take longer for you, however, you will know they are dry when they are hard to the touch.

Basil Sage Mint Bubble Bars Recipe: Using Your Bubble Bars

Finally, you can start using your bubble bars!  A bubble bar simply needs to be crumbled under your warm running bath water.  So, just crumble one slice under your bath water.  It will fill your tub with bubbles!  So sit back, relax, and unwind!

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Preparing Your Soy Wax

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Preparing Your Soy WaxFirst, you will want to melt your soy candle wax.  You will want to melt your wax using a double boiler.  You can create a double by adding a few inches of water to a medium sized pot. Then, place your pouring pot in the water.

So, using your scale, weigh out 510 grams of your soy wax in your double boiler.  Then, melt the wax using the double boiler you created.  Once the wax has melted, remove it from the double boiler.  Finally, add 50 grams of NG Aloe and White Lilac Fragrance Oil.  Next, stir to mix the fragrance into the wax.  This portion of your candle will be left uncolored.  For now, let it cool.  We will come back to it.

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Creating You Beeswax Embeds

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Creating You Beeswax EmbedsThis step can be done while you are waiting for your soy wax to melt.  Before beginning warm your shamrock mold in your oven.  Place your oven on the lowest setting possible.  Place the mold in your over and allow it to warm up.  It does not need to be hot, just warm.  Once it is warmed, remove it from the oven.  We warmed the mold so that the beeswax would cool slower.  By letting our beeswax cool as slowly as possible it made it more flexible when we adhered it to the jar.  If they cool too quickly they will not have as much flexibility and are likely to crack.  They also will not adhere to the jar as well.

Again, you will want to use a double boiler to melt your wax.  So, to your pouring, add 20 grams of beeswax.  Melt the wax.  Then, add 2 grams of NG Aloe and White Lilac Fragrance Oil.  Also, add one drop of green Spectrum liquid candle dye.  Then, use a mixing spoon to stir the ingredients together.  Finally, pour a very thin layer of the wax into two cavities of the Shamrock silicone mold.  Your shamrocks will not fill the cavities of the mold, the will be very thin.  Alternatively, you can pour the beeswax onto wax paper.  Then, use a sharp pencil to draw the shape onto the beeswax before cutting it out.  We used a similar technique in our Leopard Candle Recipe.  This leopard print soy and beeswax candle recipe will show you how that is done.

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Preparing You Jars

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Preparing You Jars

There are a few things you will need to do before pouring your soy wax.  First, you want to warm your jar.  Again, with your oven on a low temperature, place your jar in the oven to warm it.  Remember, this will only take a few minutes.  You want it to be warm, not hot.  Once it is warm, remove it from the oven.

Next, remove your beeswax shamrocks from the molds.  Then, we will place the shamrocks in the jars.  Your shamrocks will be fairly flexible but it is still possible to crack them if you apply too much pressure.  So, make sure you do not try to rush this step.  Place your first shamrock in the jar.  Apply gentle pressure to the embed to bend it to the shape of the jar.  Then, press gently to adhere the embed to the jar.  Remember to make sure the embed adheres to the jar completely.  If it is not completely adhered the soy wax will get in between the glass and the beeswax.  Then, you will not be able to see the clover.  Repeat this process with the next shamrock.  You want to place the second shamrock on the opposite side of the jar.  Then adhere two of your CD 10 wicks to the bottom of the jar.  Make sure they are evenly spaced and centered.

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Pouring Your Soy Wax

Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe Pouring Your Soy WaxNow, back to your cooling soy wax.  We will want to pour our soy wax at a very low temperature.  The temperature of the wax is very important for this step.  We pour at a low temperature because we do not want to risk melting the beeswax embeds.  So, once your soy wax 464 has come to about 110 degrees Fahrenheit, you are ready to pour.  Pour the soy wax into you apothecary jar.  Allow the soy wax candles to setup.  Then, leave it undisturbed while it sets up.  Finally, trim your wicks, place your lid on your jar, and allow your candle to cure before burning your candle.

We hope that you have had as much fun creating the Saint Patricks Day Candle Recipe as we had.  For even more fragrance fun recipes check out all of our other candle, soap, and cosmetic recipes in our recipe box.  Our recipe box also offers numerous free downloadable classes to help you learn these wonderful crafts.  In addition, we love to see what you have been up to.  Post pictures of your latest projects on our Facebook page.  You can also tag us on Instagram or Twitter @ngscents.
