How to Properly Exfoliate
In order to keep your skin looking healthy and radiant, exfoliation must be done; especially as we age. The keys to remember here are to have an exfoliating tool like a loofah or wash cloth, your exfoliating scrubs (one for body, one for face) and moisturizer ready.
The best time to start the exfoliation process is before a shower or bath. By rubbing down your body before getting it wet, you will be able to remove dead skin cells, therefore allowing the new skin cells to be cleaned and pores unclogged.
Never exfoliate if you have skin that is sunburned, areas with cuts, or open wounds. Exfoliating these areas will be very painful for you.

Steps for Exfoliating Your Skin:
1. Using a loofah (for oily skin), wash cloth (for sensitive skin), exfoliating gloves (for normal skin), or bath pouf; wipe your body down from head to toe. This should occur before you step into your shower or bath. The goal of this step is to remove or loosen any dead skin cell in order to properly exfoliate your skin. In order to properly exfoliate the soles of your feet, you may want to use a pumice stone since typically the skin here is much harder. This is done in a circular motion, and be careful not to press to hardly.
2. Next, step into the tub and wet your body.
3. Then, apply your exfoliating body wash or scrub to your exfoliating medium (loofah, cloth, gloves, etc). When you are ready to start washing your body, you will want to do this is a small circular motion. Although it is not necessary, using a body brush is the easiest way to exfoliate those hard to reach places of your body. If you are exfoliating your face too, make sure you use a facial exfoliant. Body exfoliants and facial exfoliants vary in the amount of gentleness for your skin.
4. When you are ready to rinse, use lukewarm water. Once all of the cleanser/lather is rinsed off, you will want to do one more final rinse with the coldest temperature water that you can take. Using the cold water will help to close your pores that were just exfoliated.
5. Finally, step out of the tub and immediately apply your body lotion. You still want your skin to be damp. Since you just exfoliated, you will want to make sure it is a moisturizing lotion. Since exfoliating your body can be drying process, you want to make sure you are allowing your skin to stay healthy and hydrated.
