If you currently purchase scented oils for your oil burners, stop now! You can save time and money by creating your own and it is super easy too!

How to make Potpourri Oils

Scenting your home with candles may not be an option for you.  However, most people do have a tea light burner or oil burner somewhere in their homes.  But, did you know that you can create your own scented oils for an oil burner or tea light burner at a fraction of the cost?

Besides the inexpensiveness of making your own scented oils, you also have freedom of choice.  Because this scented oil is not put on the body, the fragrance oil/essential oil possibilities are endless.  You can scent your home with any fragrance oil imaginable like Sweet Orange Chili Peppers or Snowman Balls.  And, if you are feeling super creative, you can use a blend of fragrance oils or essential oils to make your home’s very own personal scent.

This project has two ingredients:  A fragrance oil or essential oil (or combination of scented oils of your choosing) and carrier oil (any light weight oil will work).

Please Note:  Due to the fact that essential oils are very volatile, the scent will be very quick to disperse throughout your home.  However, because essential oils lack base notes, there will be nothing grounding the fragrance; therefore essential oils will not contain the staying power of scenting like a fragrance oil will.

For the carrier oils, Natures Garden carries several carrier oils that will work for this project.  They are listed in no particular order:

DPG Solvent Liquid (dipropylene glycol)
Grapeseed Oil
Sweet Almond Oil
Apricot Kernel Oil
Sunflower Oil

Here is the Recipe:

The recipe for making scented oils for burners is 50% carrier oil to 50% fragrance oil.  That means if you want to make 2 ounces of scented oil, you would use 1 ounce DPG Solvent and 1 ounce fragrance oil, etc.  Then stir.

If you are using essential oils to make scented oils for burners, the recipe is all carrier oil with a few drops of essential oil.  The number of drops of essential oils will vary based on the strength of the essential oil.  For example, Cinnamon Leaf Ceylon essential oil is super strong and may only need 2-3 drops.

Once the mixture is stirred, it is ready to use.  Simply pour the scented oil into your potpourri burner or tea light burner.  Once the mixture is heated by the burner it will be no time before you will begin to smell it throughout the house.
