Melt and Pour Soap BenefitsMelt and Pour Soap Benefits

We at Natures Garden would like to share some of the melt and pour soap benefits with customers that may not know too much about soaping. There are quite a few different methods one can use to create soaps, so it can be a bit overwhelming for new soapers. Every method has some benefits that you may enjoy, but you must choose the method that will be best for you and the situation you are in.

While many find melt and pour soap to be one of the easier ways to make soap at home, even the most experienced soapmaker may come back to this method. Honestly, it all depends on what the soaps are needed for and the time you have available. So, at one point or another, anyone can benefit from knowing a bit about this method. If you have never used melt and pour soap or are thinking about trying this method again, then we’d like to share with you all of the great things about melt and pour soap. So, here is why melt and pour soap is a great soap making method!

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Great for Beginning Soap MakersMelt and Pour Soap Benefits Great for Beginning Soap Makers

Due to a few different aspects of this soap making method, beginning soap makers may want to start with this method. This is an easy way to introduce soap making into your crafting. This method won’t have you working with lye right out of the gate. This can help prevent you from feeling overwhelmed with everything all at once. Instead, a new soap maker can get used to the time sensitive nature of cooling soap, adding fragrance oils, and coloring soap. Plus, this method skips right to the fun of creating to let you experience all the fun. Melt and pour soap allows you to have fun trying out soap making before jumping into more complex methods. You can create very simple soaps that are still cute with this method without taking too much time or skill to complete.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Creativity and Additional Ingredients

There is so much that you can do with melt and pour soap! As long as you have some molds, additives, and a creative mind you can make anything you want. Further, you can look to our Melt & Pour Soap Recipes page for soap making inspiration and ideas. In addition, you can print out the step by step soap making tutorials for each project on that page. While melting soap and pouring it into molds may sound like it is simple and boring, we can show you that there is so much that you can create with this method of soap making.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Manipulating the Shape of the SoapMelt and Pour Soap Benefits Manipulating the Shape of the Soap

Since melt and pour soap will take on the shape of whatever it sets up in, it is pretty easy to shape the soap into whatever you’d like. For example, our Lollipop Soap Recipe used a flat shaped soap layer and cut it into strips that we curled to create a lollipop appearance. Also, the Fresh Fallen Leaves Soap Recipe used straws to have soap shaped like a tree trunk. This along with the melt and pour soap leaves created a very pretty soap! Plus, you can make more simple soaps that are super cute like the Neapolitan Cupcake Soap Recipe, which uses a layered cupcake base and whipped frosting on top.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Adding Herbs and MicaMelt and Pour Soap Benefits Adding Herbs and Mica

Also, you can incorporate micas and even herbs into your soap! You can take your chosen additives and include it right into your melted soap. We have done this with our Blarney Stone Soap Recipe. Gold mica was added to the clear melt and pour soap base and can be seen incorporated right into the soap bar. So, you can use this technique to create a prettier appearance for your soaps. Additionally, you can add herbs or powders to provide your soap with certain properties. For example, we created the Activated Charcoal Soap Recipe with activated charcoal powder to provide a more cleansing bar of soap that provides a deep pore clean. Regardless of why you want to add herbs, mica, or other powders, the best part is that you have the option to if you need it!

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Making Embed SoapMelt and Pour Soap Benefits Making Embed Soap

Additionally, you can add soap embeds to your melt and pour soap bars. This technique gives you the freedom to create even more creative kinds of soap. This would have you create a smaller soap prior to creating your soap bar so that you can add shapes into the soap bar itself.

While it will all be melt and pour soap, you will be able to use the embedded soap to create designs or certain effects. For example, creating the swirl for the Cinnabun Melt and Pour Soap Recipe. We wanted to add a swirl to make the soap bar look more like a cinnamon roll and less plain after we cut our soap loaf. Plus, it just looks so cute! Also, we used this embed soap idea to make the seeds for our Watermelon Soap Recipe. Otherwise, our soap wouldn’t have looked like a slice of watermelon! Sometimes the embed soap really pulls your soap idea together!

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Option to Make Clear Soap

Another creative option unique to melt and pour soap is creating a bar that you can see straight into. We all know that we can see embed soaps by cutting a loaf of soap into a few individual bars. However, diamond clear melt and pour soap offers another way to get creative with embed soaps. You can create a bar of soap with solid shapes and colors inside that you will be able to see without cutting.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Mango Loofah Melt and Pour Soap RecipeSimply add a layer of diamond clear soap, place your solid object or colored soap inside, and add your top layer. This leaves you with a solid bar of soap with a fun design inside. We have used this method to create the Mango Loofah Melt and Pour Soap Recipe, where you can see the loofah inside the soap bar. Another idea is to use this soap technique to create kids toys with fun little toys inside.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Some Choice with the Ingredients

While you aren’t in complete control of the ingredients that are in your soap base, there are some things that you can do. First of all, you can choose your type of soap base. There are a lot of different melt and pour soap bases to choose from that all have different ingredients. For example, you can choose the SLS FREE Glycerin Melt and Pour Soap if you are looking for soap base without SLS. We have a lot of different types that may suit your individual soaping needs on Natures Garden’s Melt and Pour Soap page. Some of my favorites are our Shea Butter MP Soap Base and the Honey MP Base. Whether you are looking for a with a little extra of something, soap without a certain ingredient, or a base with a certain appearance, you can find all our soap bases on our site.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Controlling Certain IngredientsMelt and Pour Soap Benefits Controlling the Ingredients

Not only can you choose different types of soap base to control the ingredients, but you are in control of scenting and coloring. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, then you can create melt and pour soaps that agree with your skin. First, those with sensitivities to fragrances and essential oils can leave the bar unscented. Also, those that would rather not use liquid soap dye can use natural herbs to color the soap or leave the soap it’s natural color. Thus, you do have some control over the content of your soap bars.

Furthermore, you can add a little bit more of your favorite oils of butters to the soap base you choose. If you find a soap base that has all the ingredients you like, but you wish that it included another ingredient, you have the freedom to add something else. However, you need to be careful not to add too much as this can change the bar and could lose its lather. So, we would not recommend introducing more than a tablespoon of your added oils or butters per pound of mp soap. But, you can play with your recipe to find the right proportion for your soap bars.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Convenience of this Method

Another great reason to work with melt and pour soap is that it is super easy to create soaps! This soap making method is very simple in every way from prepping to create the soap to the clean up process. So, let’s go over all the ways that melt and pour soap making saves you time and effort.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Can Use the Soap Immediately

Also, you can use your soaps immediately after you make them. Obviously, the melt and pour soap base has been previously created and gone through saponification before you buy the melt and pour soap base. While you don’t have to worry about the lye, the soap already has it in the soap. But, the lye that was used to make the soap has already had time to fully react before the soap bases were sold. This means that the curing process has already completely finished before you even open the soap package. So, no need to wait after you form your masterpieces! As soon as your soaps are colored, scented, and out of their molds it can go straight into the bath tub! This is wonderful because you don’t have to worry about waiting long enough to prevent irritation and you can use the soap right away with no waiting.

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Quick, Easy, and Fun

Furthermore, this soap making method is perfect for those that are in a hurry to have their soaps done. If you need to get your soaps ready quick for a gathering, a gift, or just excited to use it yourself, then this is a good soaping choice. Everything about this soaping method is quicker. In the beginning, there are fewer preparations and after you finish there is no curing time before using the soap. So, you will have your finished soaps ready as soon as everything has set up and popped out of the molds.

Also, melt and pour soap making is perfect for those that are in the mood to skip right to the creative part of soap making. Since melt and pour soap already has the first few steps of the soaping process complete, you don’t need to worry about these. So, you will have more time and energy to focus on creating super cute soap! You are left with the coloring, scenting, and shaping of your soaps. Simply melt the soap, fill your molds, and get creative.  This soap method is an easy way to get right to the fun part of soap making!

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits No Need to Deal with LyeMelt and Pour Soap Benefits No Need to Deal with Lye

While lye is safe with the necessary safety precautions, sometimes it is just easier to let somebody else do all the leg work. In this case, our melt and pour soap base lets you buy your slabs of soap after they have cured. Thus, there is a lot less to prepare when working with melt and pour soap. For example, you won’t need to take as many safety precautions or wear as much protective clothing during the creation of your soap. Also, you won’t have to deal with making the lye water solution or combining the oils at the right temperature. So, no need to have vinegar handy because lye burns won’t ever happen with this soaping method. Thus, melt and pour soap making is just that much easier to work with!

Melt and Pour Soap Benefits Clean Up Is Easy

Further, the clean up for this method is very easy. Since this the melt and pour soap base is already completed soap, all you really need to do is wash your utensils with water. No need to worry about unreacted lye and no intense scrubbing or vinegar required. Just like soap, your left over base will rinse right out of your bowl.

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Clean and Prepare

Before you begin this recipe you may want to clean and prepare both your workspace and the equipment you will be working with for this recipe. Since crafting can take most of your attention, it may be more likely for dirt to find its way into your finish products. So, just clean and wipe everything down before you start.

First, find a workspace that provided you with plenty of room and access to a microwave. So, sanitize the surface you will be working on to prevent anything from getting picked up as you lay down your utensils. Also, make sure to wipe out the microwave you are going to use to make sure nothing falls into your bowls as your heat the soap base. Next, you will want to clean all your equipment you will be using for the recipe. This will allow you to be sure that nothing will get into the melted soap as you mix the ingredients together. In addition, set out your Brownie Bites Silicone Mold and make sure it is wiped out well. Do all of this and your soaps are sure to come out perfectly clean and adorable!

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Weighing Soap for the First LayerLemon Squares Soap Recipe Weighing Soap for the First Layer

Initially, we are going to create the first layer of our melt and pour soap lemon squares. This will end up being the layer on the top of our soap when we are finished. So, weigh out 270 grams of the Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base into a clean, microwave safe bowl. Now, you are going to melt your weighed out soap in the microwave. Take the bowl and heat your mango butter soap in 30-second increments until all the soap has completely melted. Once all the soap is in a liquid state, you can move on to the next step.

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Preparing the First LayerLemon Squares Soap Recipe Preparing the First Layer

Next, we are going to add the lemon fragrant oil and create the color for our first soap layer. So, grab your bowl of melted Diamond Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base. Now, add 13 grams of Natures Garden’s Lemon Squares Fragrance Oil to your clear, melted soap base. Then, add two drops of the Yelp Yellow Soap Colorant and 1 drop of the Yellow Oxide Soap Colorant to the melted soap mixture. Make sure to mix everything thoroughly to incorporate all of the scent and colorants throughout the soap. After it has been evenly mixed, you can move on to the next step.

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Pouring the First LayerLemon Squares Soap Recipe Pouring the First Layer

Now, you are going to pour this completed soap mixture into the mold to complete your first layer. So, fill each of the 24 cavities about halfway with your soap mixture. Just make sure that you don’t fill the mold cavities too high! Pouring too much into one cavity will prevent you from having a good-sized second layer. Also, you would be more likely to run out of your diamond clear melt and pour soap mixture before you finish filling all the cavities that you need to fill! So, try to keep the mold cavities filled as close to halfway as you possibly can.

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Spraying the First LayerLemon Squares Soap Recipe Spraying the First Layer

Then, you are going to quickly finish off this first layer. After you have poured everything into the mold you are going to lightly spray the tops of your soaps before they start to set up. This is done to release any air bubbles that could be trapped. This air comes from the pouring process. So, grab your spray bottle of rubbing alcohol and give your soap a few good spritzes. Once this is done you will want to wait until this layer is entirely set up before moving on to another step. This will prevent unwanted mixing of layers and you are going to want two separate and straight layers

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Weighing Soap for the Second LayerLemon Squares Soap Recipe Weighing Soap for the Second Layer

Next, you will be getting the second soap layer ready. After the first layer has set up completely it is time to start preparing the second layer. Once we pop out the finished soaps, this will become the bottom layer in the finished soaps. So, weigh out 270 grams of the Mango Butter Melt and Pour Soap into a clean, microwave safe bowl. Now, use the microwave oven to heat this soap base in 30-second intervals and stir quickly between each interval. After all the soap is in liquid form, you are ready for the next step of this process.

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Preparing the Second LayerLemon Squares Soap Recipe Preparing the Second Layer

Now, you are going to be adding the lemon squares fragrance oil and soap colorant to your melted soap base. So, take your bowl of melted mango soap base and add 13 grams of the Lemon Squares Fragrance Oil. Then, you are going to add 1 drops of the Neon Yellow FUN Soap Colorant, 1 drop of the Yellow Oxide Soap Colorant, and a tiny amount of the Brown Oxide Soap Colorant. You can add this tiny amount of Brown Oxide FUN Soap Colorant with a toothpick.  Simply dip a toothpick into your bottle of brown soap colorant. Then, dip the toothpick into the soap. This will swirl a very tiny amount into your melted soap base. After, mix everything together thoroughly until it is evenly dispersed in your soap mixture.

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Pouring the Second Layer

Next, you are going to take your soap mixture and pour it into each of the cavities of the brownie bites silicone mold. Since your first layer is entirely set up, it is safe to pour this second layer of soap. First, you are going to spray the first layer one more time with the rubbing alcohol. Doing this will help the two layers stick together better and also help prevent the layers from breaking apart later on. After, fill the remaining half of each of the 24 cavities in your mold. After you finish you should have all 24 of the cavities completely filled to the top.

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Spraying the Second LayerLemon Squares Soap Recipe Spraying the Second Layer

Again, you will be spraying the top of your freshly poured soap in the mold. So, grab your spray bottle of rubbing alcohol. Then, lightly spray the tops all your soaps before they start to set up. Since this removes all the trapped air bubbles, spraying the rubbing alcohol should leave you with smooth soap. After you spray, you will wait a while to allow this layer to completely set up. Later, you will be removing all of your lemon squares from their cavities in the silicone soap mold. Once everything is removed you can move on to the final step!

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Adding the Powdered SugarLemon Squares Soap Recipe Adding the Powdered Sugar

Finally, you are going to be adding the powdered sugar topping to your finished lemon square soaps! At this point, the second layer you poured should be completely set up and you will remove all your soap from the mold. This will leave you with 24 bright yellow squares that are super cute! Now, each of these square soaps will be topped with the powdered sugar to give a more realistic effect. First, make sure that each lemon square scented soap has the side that has the brighter yellow, which was created with the diamond clear soap, facing up. Otherwise, you could end up with upside down lemon squares! Nobody wants that, so make sure to pay close attention.

Then, take a spoon and scoop some of the powdered sugar. Now, sprinkle this sweet powdered sugar onto the tops of your little soaps. Then, shake off any excess powdered sugar. The sugar should stick to the tops without rubbing alcohol. It seems to stick just like it would on a real lemon square!

Lemon Squares Soap Recipe Using Your Lemon Square Soaps

After your soaps all have their powdered sugar topping put on, they are finished and you are officially done with your soaps. Finally, these little dessert soaps are ready to use! Unlike with cold process soap, there is no cure time. This is because the soap had already been through the saponification process and given time to cure before you purchased the soap. So, your creations are ready to use as soon as they set up! Obviously, you can use your lemon square soaps just like you would a typical soap bar. Since everything, including the powdered sugar, is body safe. So, you can use these soaps as a hand soap or a shower soap. Regardless, you’ll get clean and smell like delicious lemon squares!

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Clean and Sanitize

Before you start your project make sure that you are truly prepared. First fill a bullet bottle with rubbing alcohol and place a fine mist sprayer on top. Then, not only should you sanitize your work space, but you should retrieve and clean your equipment. The creation of this kit will require a clean counter space and an available microwave. Also, collecting the equipment needed to complete the project will help the process go smoother. Since everything will be within an arm’s reach, you won’t need to spend time and energy to locate certain tools to finish. Plus, pausing part way through may cause your soap to cool before it is time to pour into the molds. So, preparing ahead of time can save you time and prevent you from messing up your creation.

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Preparing and Melting Your Soap Base

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Preparing and Melting Your Soap BaseFirst, you are going to want to prepare your provided soap base. Since melt and pour soap has already undergone the saponification process, all you’re are going to need to do is melt the soap. Also, our kit contains the Goats Milk Soap Base. However, you can choose the clear soap base if you’d like, the process is going to be the same either way. So, cut your slab of soap in half, which will be about a single pound of soap. Then, cut your soap into smaller chunks to fit the soap into your glass measuring cup. After, you will place your filled measuring cup in the microwave for a minute. If the soap is not entirely melted after a minute, then heat the soap again in 30 second intervals until the soap base is entirely melted. You need to melt in intervals to avoid overheating the soap, as it could potentially boil.

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Scenting Your Melted Soap

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Scenting Your Melted SoapNext, remove your soap from the microwave. Then, you will want to choose one of your four fragrance oils to add to your melted soap. While we chose to use the Lavender Fragrance Oil, any of the scents will work perfectly. Now, measure out a single tablespoon of your preferred fragrance and mix it into the melted soap.

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Coloring Your Melted Soap

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Coloring Your Melted SoapAfter you add the fragrance oil, it’s time for color.  You will need your Da Bomb Soap Dyes.  Then, you will want to add some of the liquid soap dye to the scented soap. While you can add either color you’d like, we chose to use two red and two blue to create a light pastel purple shade for our soap.  Add your soap colorant and mix.

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Pouring Your Melted Soap

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Pouring Your Melted SoapNow, you are going to pour your soap into the provided molds. While your melted soap is still hot, pour the soap into the molds. You should have enough melted to fill all the cavities in both molds. After your soaps set up you can create a second batch of soaps with the other half of your melt and pour soap slab. Additionally, you can spray a paper towel with Pam Cooking Spray then wipe inside each cavity of your mold before pouring your melted soap. This will make removing the hardened soap from the molds easier, but will not harm the soaps. Once you pour the melted soap into the molds spray any air bubbles you see with rubbing alcohol to release them.

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Finishing Your Soaps

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Finishing Your SoapsFinally, you are going to finish your melt and pour soaps. First, you will need to wait a half hour before moving your soap molds. Since the soap will be in a cooling process, moving the soaps could cause them to wrinkle or spill before they set up entirely. After this time passes, you can move the soap molds into the refrigerator for about an hour, or you can wait for them to setup naturally. Either way, allow the mp soap to finish the cooling process before removing your soap from the molds. Next, once the soap is setup, turn your mold upside down on a counter and press on the back of the soap cavity until your soap is released. Repeat the steps above with the remaining soap base. After, your soaps are complete and removed from the molds they are ready for immediate use!

Melt and Pour Soap Kit Other Ideas

If you are looking to kick your handmade soap up a notch, you can always use additives. You have many options when it comes to additives. My favorite is mica which can be dusted on your soap once they setup. This will give the soap a shimmering bling. Also, dried flowers like lavender or calendula can be added to the melted soap. Perhaps you want to add coffee grounds for exfoliation. These are just a few ways to make your soap stand out but the options really are endless. We hope that you enjoy the melt and pour soap kit.
