Hello everyone! How often do you use baking soda in your every day life? Or maybe it’s something that you always have around the house but you really have no idea what it is ever used for? Well, I’m here to tell you all about it! You will definitely be amazed at all the different uses you didn’t know it had! After reading this, I’m sure you’ll be intrigued enough to try out some of these awesome ideas with baking soda for yourself!

I’m sure we all know and think of baking soda just as a part of the bread making process. Or maybe if you’ve worked in restaurants like I have, you associate it as almost a fire extinguisher. Like if something catches fire on the stove or grill, if you pour baking soda on it, puts the fire out. Or even the toothpaste commercials when people talk about that they or their loved ones used baking soda for toothpaste. But that’s not all this wonderful product can do! Did you know baking soda can be used in bath and body products as well? It can be used in bath bombs recipes and when used as a hair rinse, it will make your hair soft and silky. And it gets even better! When you use baking soda to add a little something extra to your bath time, it helps to soften the skin and give it a lovely silky feeling! Even the cosmetic industry uses baking soda! Cleaning formulas and cosmetic formulations use it to help lift dirt and remove oils.

You can even make your very own baking soda laundry detergents and dish soaps when you combine it with citric acid and soap! There are many other cleaning products that use baking soda as well. Cloth diapers can be cleaned with a mixture of baking soda and water. It can remove grease stains and oils, clean cars, corroded batteries, ovens, microwaves, vinyl shower curtains, and it can even remove marks on walls. Baking soda also has deodorizing qualities! It can be used as a replacement for deodorant, deodorize pet bedding, cars, closets, refrigerators, shoes, cutting boards, dishwashers, garbage disposals, trash cans and even stuffed animals just to name a few.

There are many medicinal benefits to baking soda as well! It can help slow kidney failure and there is a theory that it can be used to fight cancer. It is also used to treat indigestion and heartburn, it can also be used when removing splinters and for allergic reactions to poison ivy, sumac, and oak. For oral health, baking soda is used as an ingredient in toothpastes to help remove plaque from the teeth. Soaking your feet in baking soda can treat foot fungus and odors. Athletes also can use baking soda to keep them from getting tired during a game and it helps to enhance their performance.

Those are just a few of the many ways to use baking soda! Aren’t you just dying to try some of them out now? One of my favorite and most interesting uses to me though, is a recipe we came across on Pinterest. For getting scuff marks off of vinyl and suede shoes. Using baking soda in the recipe! Did you know that baking soda can also be used to help keep septic systems clean? Hold on though, if you are need of the actual product itself, we have it right here at Nature’s Garden! Just type “baking soda” into the search bar on our site and it will take you right to it! These ideas are something you just can’t pass up! Clamshell Bath Melt

This entry was posted in bath and body, bath products, beeswax, Fragrance Oils, Natures Garden and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

clamshell bath meltNow, you can make your very own homemade clamshell bath melt by following these very simple instructions.  The clamshell bath melt takes no time to make, smells amazing, and comes complete in its own packaging.  It literally does not get any easier than this recipe!

All of the ingredients needed to make this super easy recipe can be found at Natures Garden.

Now, besides all of the skin loving benefits of bath melts; one of the coolest aspects is that you can cater you bath melt to your specific liking.  By switching out the scent, herb, oil, or butter, you can make an array of clamshell bath melts.  If you would like to see the complete list of butters and oils you can choose from, please click on this link, or click on this link if you would like to see the herb selection.  If you would like to view the variety of fragrances that Natures Garden carries, in finding the perfect scent for your clamshell bath melt, please click on this link.  Just remember to select a scent that is body safe!

However, if you would like to follow this clamshell bath melt recipe exactly, here is the items and weights that you will need:
230 grams Mango Butter- an exotic, luxurious butter that is super moisturizing
16 grams White Beeswax- leaves your skin feeling silky soft
10 grams Grapeseed Oil – this oil is high in antioxidants and easily absorbs into the skin
10 grams Lavender Flowers Whole- for both decorative purposes, as well as aromatic and relaxation reasons
4 grams Kismet Fragrance Oil - A winner of a scent!  This is the fragrance description:  Beginning with fresh top notes of sweet orange and lavender; followed by a sleek woody blend of patchouli, incense and golden amber embracing the heart and soul inside oneself.

Now, there are a few things that you will want to note about bath melts.  First, if you are not fond of the idea of herbs going down your drain, you can always place the bath melts inside a pull string tea bag.  This will still allow the bath melt to function, but will keep all of the herbs inside.  Then, when you are ready simply throw the tea bag (with the herbs inside) away.  Secondly, it is the nature of bath melts to begin to melt just from physical contact with skin (or warm water).  It is not advised to keep your melts where they are susceptible to heat or direct sunlight, or to ship this type of bath and body product.

And, finally the steps (with pictures included):

First and foremost, as always clean and sanitize your work area.

melting the ingredients

Then, using the double boiler method, weigh out and melt the following ingredients: the Mango Butter, the Grapeseed Oil, and the Beeswax.

scenting the bath melts

Once you see that all the ingredients are melted, remove them from the heat source.  Next, add the Kismet Fragrance Oil.  Then, stir to incorporate.

prepping the clamshells

Now, lay out your 4 clamshell containers on a flat surface.

pouring the bath melts

Then, slowly begin to pour the bath melt mixture into your clamshells.  Do not fill the clamshells all the way full.  Make sure you leave room for the lavender flowers to go on top.

weigh out the lavender

Next, weigh out the 10 grams of lavender flowers.

sprinkle lavender herbs on top

Once you notice that the bath melts have started to set up slightly, there will be a thin film.  At this point, it is time to sprinkle the clamshells with the lavender flowers.  Because the lavender flowers are so light, you may have to apply light pressure to ensure they stick to the top of the bath melt.

freeze the bath melts

When the clamshell bath melts are hard enough to move, place them in the freezer for 30 minutes.

clamshell bath melts

That is it!  Remove your clamshell bath melts from the freezer, and snap the lid shut.

Your clamshell bath melts are now ready for use!

When you are ready to use them:   Only one bath melt is needed per bath.  Place one bath melt cube into the bath tub under warm running water.  Enjoy!

Please Note:  Be Careful: Your bath tub will be slippery from the oils and butters once the bath melt has melted.

Realistic Gel Candle

This entry was posted in beeswax, candle colorants, candle dye, candle fragrance oils, candle making, candle making supplies, candle recipe, Fragrance Oils, gel wax, gel wax scents and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

honeycomb candleGel wax is a great candle wax for embedding items in candles.  This translucent wax also provides the opportunity to make realistic gel candles.  Sea or ocean themed gel candles are perfect examples of this, right down to the air bubbles.

We at Natures Garden however, wanted to take the realistic gel candle concept and kick it up a notch.  Using the fragrance oil Honey, which is gel safe; we arrived at a notion of somehow adding the look of an embedded honeycomb.  Trying to stick with items we already had in house, we creatively used bubble wrap and beeswax (because of it’s high melting point); to make our very own spin on embeds.  Through several trails and errors, we found the perfect look, scent, and color for this Honeycomb Candle Recipe.

Here is a List of the Items You Will Need:
Gel Wax- to emulate the look of delicious honey
Beeswax
White Pastilles- to make the embed of a honeycomb
Honey Fragrance Oil- a gel safe scent to match the realistic gel candle theme
Zinc Core Wicking- to make your candle more than just a decoration (4)  51-32-18z wicks  (2 in each candle)
Spectrum Candle Dye- Yellow- the color of the honeycomb
Spectrum Candle Dye- Orange- this color lightly added to the yellow makes the perfect golden honey hue
Thermometer- to monitor the temperature of the gel wax

Other Items and Supplies Needed:
Stirring Spoon- to fully incorporate the color and scent to the wax
Stove- for the double boiler method
Scale- to be dead on for your measurements
Knife- to cut the beeswax
Toothpick- to add a touch of orange to the gel wax
9 x 13 cake pan- to make the honeycomb
bubble wrap- to make the honeycomb shape
(2) Pots- for double boiler method
Apothecary Jars- this recipe below will make a total of (2) 16oz jars.  Any shape or size jar will work, you will just need to adjust the measurements accordingly

And finally, here are the steps with pictures included:

Step 1:  Using the double boiler method, set the temperature of your stove top between medium and low heat.  Next, weigh out and melt 230 grams of beeswax.  You will want to stir this occasionally as it melts.

Step 2:   When the beeswax is in a liquid state, place 2 drops of Spectrum Yellow Candle Dye in it and stir. After the color is incorporated, place the pot back into the heat source.

Step 3:
Next, lay your cake pan on a flat surface, this will ensure that your honeycomb has an even thickness.  Measure out 7 inches of length in your pan.  Mark this length by placing your knife across the pan.  If your knife is not long enough, you can use any kitchen utensil that will lay across the pan.  Next, with the bubble side up, place the bubble wrap over your knife and cake pan.

how to get honeycomb look

Step 4: Now, weigh out 23 grams of Honey Fragrance Oil.  Remove your beeswax from the heat source, add the fragrance.  Stir.

Step 5:  Slowly pour the beeswax over the bubble wrap.  Allow this to fully set up. Please Note:  Do not rush the set up of beeswax or it may crack.

making beeswax look like honeycomb

Step 6:  When the beeswax has cooled, gently remove it from the cake pan. Now, taking your time, carefully peel away the bubble wrap.

honeycomb beeswax

Step 7:  Next, weigh out 1000 grams of gel wax.  Place this into the double boiler and allow it to melt, stirring occasionally.  This will resemble to a thick syrup.

Step 8:  Now, lay your beeswax on a flat surface.  Place one of your candle jars on its side.  Using your knife, mark the width of the jar (before it changes shape).  Next, subtract 1/2″ from your marking.  Finally, make a line and cut it with your knife.

Step 9:  Gently roll your beeswax into a loose circle.  Place one roll in each of your jars.  Make sure the beeswax roll is at least 1/2 inch away from the walls of the jar.  Then, set aside.

how to make a honeycomb candle

Step 10:  Now, secure your wicks to the bottom of your candle jars.  Make sure they are centered.

Step 11:  Once the gel wax is melted, place 4 drops of Spectrum Yellow Candle Dye into the gel wax.  Next, add 1 toothpick tip of Spectrum Orange Dye.  Stir.  Finally, add 100 grams of Honey Fragrance Oil.  Stir again.

how to make a honey color

Step 12:  Place your thermometer into the gel wax.  Then, begin to slowly stir the gel wax.  Do not stir to quickly or you will have an excess of air bubbles.  Keep stirring and scrapping the sides until the gel wax temperature hits 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 13:  Now, slowly pour the gel wax into the containers until your honeycomb is covered.  Then, straighten your wicks.  Finally, allow the candles to fully set up.

pouring honeycomb candle

Your honeycomb candles are now ready.  Simply trim your wick, light, and enjoy!

With this realistic gel candle, there are two crucial steps that come into play.  The first is the thickness of the beeswax.  You want your beeswax to be nice and thick so it can withstand the temperature of the melted gel wax.  However, making the beeswax too thick may make it more difficult to curl, therefore complicating the honeycomb shape that can be achieved.  Lastly, the temperature of the melted gel wax is everything for this recipe.  Pouring over the 165 degree Fahrenheit point, will melt and warp your honeycomb.

Happy Crafting!
