Candle Making for KidsCandle Making for Kids

Arts and crafts are very important for a child to participate in. In the classrooms of today, there is a strong emphasis on the common cores of learning. Math, reading, writing, and science. Today, we will talk about candle making for kids.

However, the arts are just as important for a child’s growth as math can be. Learning about the world of creativity allows a child’s mind to develop in all kinds of directions. It’s never to early to start letting a child’s creative side take over. Simply holding a crayon, a paintbrush or a piece of chalk will start developing their motor skills. Their language will take shape as they learn words of description and colors. Decision making is also part of the creative process. “How do I want this to look?” “What color should the bird be?” Visual learning is very important because it gives the brain the freedom to explore, relax and not think of anything complex! Candle making for kids is a fun craft that lets kids explore texture, color, scents and all things creative!

Most kids love making and creating things for people they love. As a child, it was one of my favorite things to do. Nature’s Garden has some awesome recipes if you are looking for something different for the kids to explore. Creating candles with our Pillar of Bliss is a quick and simple craft for kids and parents. Not only is it safe, as there is no heating required, but you are able to let your creativity shine with designs, fragrances, and colors! If your child has ever made one of those “sand in jar” crafts, the technique is very similar.

Candle Making for Kids: Before You Get Started

Before you begin your creations, you will need to gather some supplies!

Candle Making for Kids: Pillar of Bliss

The type of wax that is best used in layering candles is our Pillar of Bliss. This wax is a soy/paraffin blend that is perfect for creating pillar candles or candles in molds. The wax hardens up beautifully and releases from the molds easily. It also makes wonderful layered candles! It lets you get creative without all the hassle of melting wax! Plus, it has amazing cold and hot throw!

Candle Making for Kids: Let’s Learn the Process!

Before we start on some of our favorite candle recipes, let’s talk about how the process of granulated candle making is done! As with any candle making prep, you will want to get your container ready by putting in your wicks. Which size wick do you use, you ask? Follow this link to find out the correct size! Now, simply add a drop of hot glue to the bottom of the candle wick tab and secure it to the bottom of your container, right in the middle. If the wick is to long, simply snip the excess off leaving at least 1 1/2 inch above your container.

Candle Making for Kids: Getting the Wax Ready

When it comes to layered candle making, fill each Ziploc bag with have their own color/fragrance mix. If you plan on making a lot of candles you can make your colored/scented layers in one pound batches. So let’s get your wax ready to color and scent. Using the gallon size Ziploc bags, you will weigh out your wax according to your recipe into the required number of bags. If your candle recipe calls for 6 layers, you will be using 6 bags and the wax will be divided and weighed out into each one.

Candle Making For Kids: Adding your Fragrances

As with any type of candle making, a general rule of thumb for adding fragrance oil to your wax is using 1 to 1 1/2 ounces per pound of wax. Therefore, each bag that holds 1 pound of wax will require 1 to 1 1/2 ounce of fragrance oil.

Candle Making for Kids: Adding the Color

Next, you will be adding color to each Ziploc bag. You will add the required number of drops according to your recipe, or simply add a small amount to achieve the color you wish.

Candle Making for Kids: Mixing it Up

Now that we have our wax, fragrance, and color added in, seal the bag tightly, and shake each bag, mixing the wax, fragrance and color up really well! Squeeze and squish it good! Get all that color worked in!

Candle Making for Kids: Adding the Wax to the Containers

Now that your wax is mixed up, you will start adding it to your container of choice. Simply open up your Ziploc bag a start pouring into your container. If you are layering colors, make sure you leave enough room! Always keep your wick straight when you are filling your containers. Continue adding the other colored wax layers the same way until your container is almost full.

Candle Making for Kids: Getting creative

Want to create a tie dye look? Take one of your wooden skewers and along the inside of your glass container and draw lines going down. Gently tap your container on the counter once you have drawn the lines and the colored wax from one layer will fall into these lines!

Candle Making for Kids: Bacon Candle Recipe

Our first recipe is incredibly simple and a good way to start kids out on the road to candle making. Bacon Candle recipe calls for Pillar of Bliss, our Spectrum Liquid Candle dye in shades of red, and of course our Bacon fragrance oil. Bacon fragrance oil? Yes, indeed! Smells just like bacon frying in a frying pan! Everything’s better with bacon, right? For this recipe, you will start off by separating the wax into 3 different Ziploc baggies, adding drops of colorant and then the Bacon fragrance. Next, your little candle maker will then massage the colors and scent it into the wax. Once that is done, simply pour the now scented/colored wax into your container, creating a layered look of bacon. This candle is perfect for younger kids to help create since there is no melting wax involved!

Candle Making for Kids Autumn Leaves Potpourri Recipe

Up next is a fun, fall recipe that requires a little bit of heat for melting. Even though this recipe is still quick and easy, some adult supervision is a requirement since some of the wax will be melted. The cute little leaves in our Autumn Leaves Potpourri recipe, are made with  Pillar of Bliss and colored with some pretty fall colors. We made these leaves with a mold from Flexiblemolds.com. These molds are durable, easy to clean up and are perfect for any candle or soap making! This particular mold is called dime sized Leaves candle and soap mold.  We scented this potpourri with our Autumn Woods fragrance oil. A lovely, fall woodsy scent of pine, citrus and cedar wood! We used 24 K Gold Mica to color the granulated part of the candle. These potpourris are so easy to make! They would make such pretty little gifts to give!

Candle Making for Kids: Green Camouflage Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Green Camouflage Candle Recipe

Here’s another easy recipe that the young ones can definitely help out with! This Green Camouflage Candle is made just like our Bacon Candle. You will color and scent the wax in a bag and then create layers of various greens and browns to look like the camouflage that our brave soldiers wear. The fragrance we chose for this recipe is our Fresh Outdoors. This fragrance is perfect for those that love a fresh, green fragrance! You will get floral notes of lily and jasmine, orange and ozone. Perfect for those that love the outdoors! Your kids will have fun creating camo layers so let their imagination take over!

Candle Making for Kids: Pink Camouflage Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Pink Camouflage Candle Recipe

Well, the boys got to make their own candle, now for the girls’ candle! Pink Camouflage Candle is made exactly like the Green Camouflage! We chose the fragrance oil NG Can Can Fragrance Oil for the ultimate girly girl, camouflage and all! This scent is floral with a touch of vanilla and musk! Your little girl will have a blast making her own candle in pretty shades of pink, red and burgundy.

Candle Making for Kids: Rainbow Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Rainbow Candle Recipe

This Rainbow Candle recipe would be fun to make when teaching kids the colors of the rainbow. This candle is truly simple to create and a definite must for the little ones to help make. Once the kids have finished squishing the color and fragrance into the wax using the Ziploc bag method, they can carefully pour their wax into the container to create a layered look of a rainbow. It couldn’t get any easier than that, right? We chose our fittingly Rainbow fragrance oil that smells like it’s just bursting with color! Yummy, sweet fruit of every kind hits your nose with one whiff!

Candle Making for Kids: Glistening Snowflakes Potpourri RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Glistening Snowflakes Potpourri Recipe

Here is another potpourri recipe made like the Autumn Leaves recipe. Glistening Snowflakes Potpourri has pretty little blue snowflakes scattered throughout the glistening “snow”. Once again, we have used a mold from Flexiblemolds.com. This mold is the Mini Snowflakes candle and soap mold. We have added some Diamond Dust Mica to the granulated wax to make it shimmer and have scented the whole thing, the snowflakes and the snow, with our Jack Frost fragrance oil. The scent is a perfect wintry mix of peppermint and vanilla!

Candle Making for Kids: Hydrangea Candle RecipeCandle Making for Kids: Hydrangea Candle Recipe

What could be more perfect for spring or summer than our Hydrangea Candle Recipe? Hydrangeas are bushes that bloom beautiful hues of blues, purples and sometimes greens. We created the pattern to mimic the puffy blossoms of the hydrangea. The finishing touch is some cute little embed butterflies (because butterflies are attracted to hydrangeas). Of course, we scented this creation with our Hydrangea Heaven! This fragrance oil is a beautiful, soft floral scent that is perfect in candles and in soap making!

Candle Making for Kids: A Final Note

Making granulated candles are great for fundraisers! Use your school’s colors and get a copy of the mascot artwork. You can create a label with the mascot and school name then adhere to the front of your containers. If you have a special charity event that you are donating too, how about creating candles in the colors of the charity? Pink and white for Breast Cancer Awareness, purple for Cystic Fibrosis or red, white and blue for patriotism. There are so many options! You are only limited by your imagination!

We hope you enjoyed reading about all the fun candles kids can help create. Candle making in itself can seem daunting to anybody who has never made candles in their life. So, if you are a first timer, these recipes are perfect for you! Learning the steps, and the process of candle making is easy and these recipes can help you get started on a fun new hobby! Don’t forget the kids though! Helping kids develop through arts and crafts is an important part of growing and learning! We are sure they will enjoy making candles and memories just as much as you!

Fragrance Oils for Independence DayFragrance Oils for Independence Day

We at Natures Garden have the perfect fragrance oils for Independence Day! Of course, we have some truly patriotic scents that are all in celebration of this fine country. Not only do we have traditional American scents, but we have scented oils that were formulated to match the political parties. So, we thought about some of the important overall traits for the Democrats, the Republicans, and the Independents. Then, we ask our perfumist to translate these characteristics into real scents. So, we believe that these political scents are perfect for celebrating how far our country has come and looking forward to will happen next.

Fragrance Oils for Independence Day: Boston Tea Party Fragrance OilFragrance Oils for Independence Day: Boston Tea Party Fragrance Oil

It’s important to remember where you came from and how you got there. On December 16, 1773, colonists began throwing shipments of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest the British Government for taxation without representation. This led to the American Revolution and ultimately our independence from Great Britain. So, we decided to create the Boston Tea Party Fragrance Oil to remind us of the important history that led to Independence Day. This wonderful scent starts with freshly brewed tea leaves and juicy lemon. Then, the scent has middle notes of rose hips, chai spice, and jasmine. Finally, the scent finishes with notes of refreshing musk.

We believe that the aroma of our Independent Fragrance Oil truly captures the essence of Independent voters in America. These are people that are for free-thinking and are definitely self-reliant individuals that have a desire to preserve the quality of our environment. Provided with these characteristics, our perfumist created a marvelous aroma that unique and refreshing. This scent begins with crisp citrus notes of fresh orange, lime, and lemon. Then, middle notes of tulip and daffodil give a refreshing breath of flowers to the scent. This is followed with a base of musky notes that perfectly round out the notes in this original fragrance oil by Natures Garden.

Fragrance Oils for Independence Day: Republican Fragrance OilFragrance Oils for Independence Day: Republican Fragrance Oil

Next, we used some similar personality traits of Republicans to capture the essence of these Americans in our Republican Fragrance Oil. We can see that this party stands for strong, conservative values, a deep love of this country, and a healthy family unit. So, we asked our perfumist to create a scent based on these traits and they provided us with a gorgeous and down-to-earth aroma, This scent starts with well-grounded, earthy tones of bright citrus top notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, and orange. Then, the scent indulges in lovely notes of lily of the valley, rose, and apple blossoms. Finally, the scent uses the aromas of fresh sage and McIntosh apple to create an unforgettable fragrance that is strong and grounded.

Fragrance Oils for Independence Day: Democrat Fragrance OilFragrance Oils for Independence Day: Democrat Fragrance Oil

Also, we have the perfect scent for the Democratic party. Our Democrat Fragrance Oil is based on some of the traits of the American people that make up this political party. So, this fragrance oil is based on individuals that have a free spirit. They have a general love for mankind as well as the environment, as there is a desire to conserve and protect. These traits were brought to our perfumist to create an exciting and unique fragrance oil. This aroma has uplifting top notes of grapefruit, tangerine, orange that flow perfectly into the middle aroma of persimmon. Finally, the scent is rounded out with refreshing scents of clover, ivy, and aloe that create an enlightened aroma that is attuned to both the senses and nature.

Fragrance Oils for Independence Day: Democratic Candle RecipeFragrance Oils for Independence Day: Democratic Candle Recipe

We’ve been inspired by the upstanding aroma of the Democratic Fragrance Oil to create a patriotic scented candle. So, we used this aroma in the Democratic Candle Recipe. Further, we used pillar of bliss wax to create patriotic red and white stripes and beeswax to create a lovely wax embed star.

Fragrance Oils for Independence Day: Madam President Fragrance OilFragrance Oils for Independence Day: Madam President Fragrance Oil

Amazing things can begin to grow out of positive thinking, so we at Natures Garden have decided to envision what they expect our first female president to be. Then, they captured their vision in a fragrance oil to live on and inspire. This wonderful aroma is based on the determination, innovation, confidence, and enthusiasm of a woman courageous and passionate enough to become our leader.

These characteristics shine through in the aroma of our Madam President Fragrance Oil. This fragrance combines fresh citrus notes full of charisma and charm. These notes are balanced by lovely feminine florals of jasmine, white rose, and freesia. Then, the brilliant musks and ozonic notes that are backed by a respected and humble hint of sweet vanilla. Money makes the world go ’round. Plus, it smells pretty great too. For Money Fragrance Oil, we wanted to recreate the aroma of fresh, new money. Surprisingly, it was actually really hard to get a hold of money that still had the perfect aroma of freshly printed money. You can smell the cotton as well as the fresh ink top notes. It is a fun and unique scent that is perfect for creating homemade bath and body products or even scented candles.

Our last apple pie fragrance oil is the same apple pie scent that we used in the very beginning. Since we first started creating homemade scented candles, we’ve been using this fantastic candle fragrance. While we adapted this aroma to be more body safe in our Hot Baked Apple Pie Scent, we couldn’t give up this amazing fragrance! The Apple Pie Fragrance Oil (Our Old Version) has more of a cinnamon “kick” that is unforgettable in this apple pie fragrance oil. Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?

This entry was posted in body safe fragrance oils, candle fragrance oils, essential oils, Fragrance Oils, fragrances, What is Essential Oil, What is Fragrance Oil and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?

A few of our customers have had the following question on their mind; Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil? So, we decided to explain each one to be able to compare them better. Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils have a variety of different scents that are able to set the perfect mood regardless of whether you need some relaxing aromatherapy or a jazzy pick me up scent.

While both are great for adding scents to you body products or homemade candles, they have a few key differences. This forces us to categorize them differently. Personally, I use and love both types of scented oils. I find that each is perfect for certain recipes. Essential Oils have a more pure, true scent that I love for facial products, while fragrance oils are more fun and unique, which is irresistible in lotions and soaps. So, let’s talk about what makes them each perfectly unique!

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Fragrance OilsIs There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils are a blend of many scents that work together to create a fantastic aroma. A purfumist will create three distinct parts for a single fragrance oil. These scented oils have top notes, middle notes, and base notes. So, they will have each of these layers crafted to perfectly complement one another to make an unforgettable scent.

First, the top notes are the most volatile notes. So, these are the first notes to evaporate and reach your nose, which will provide you with the initial burst of scent. The top notes can be things like citrus oils and light, aromatic ingredients. Next, we have the middle notes of the fragrance oil and the heart of your aroma. These notes are noticeable throughout most of the fragrance oil’s life time and creates what is called the “fragrance signature”. It is typical to have notes like floral, spice or fruit tones in this layer. Lastly, we have the base notes that are the longest lasting scents of the scented oil. These notes provide rich, deep scents that last long after the top notes and middle notes have evaporated. This layer may contain notes like are musk, vanilla, resins and woods. These bursting layers blend together perfectly to create a fragrance oil that smells fantastic from beginning to end!

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Are Fragrance Oils Bad For You?Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Are Fragrance Oils Bad For You?

Fragrance Oils aren’t bad for you. In fact, there are fragrance oils that contain essential oils in them. For example, our Rosemary Fragrance Oil contains high levels of the rosemary essential oil. The only difference between the two is that the fragrance oil contains notes of camphoraceous eucalyptus and coriander along with the essential oil to round our the cool, crisp herbal aroma. These wonderfully herbal notes were created synthetically to enrich the overall scent of our fragrance oil and without these notes the fragrance oil wouldn’t be as delightfully complex.

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Using Fragrance Oils for Bath and BodyIs There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Using Fragrance Oils for Bath and Body

One great way to use a complex fragrance oil is creating bath and body products that will nourish the body and leave you smelling fantastic. We used the Chocolate Raspberry Chocolate Drizzle Fragrance Oil to create our Chocolate Raspberry Drizzle Rolled Soap Recipe and it was absolutely delicious. So, you just determine how much fragrance oil can be used in your recipe and get to crafting. You can easily figure out which fragrance oils can be used on the body and their usage rate by checking the Fragrance Oil IFRA Certificate. Also, you can find our personal suggestion for usage rates in the written portion on the same page. When we determine our recommend usage rate, we take into consideration the integrity of the product. So, what do I mean by that?  Some fragrance oils have very high usage rates.  So, let’s say you are looking at a fragrance oil and the IFRA Certificate said you could go as high as 50% fragrance oil when using that particular scented oil.  If we were to say we recommend 50% in your soap, you will end up with come very mushy soap.  So, when we make these recommendations, we test to determine how much you can use and still have a beautifully well made finished product. However, you can make this judgement for yourself and test them in your own products.

Typically, you can’t use fragrance oils that have a high concentration of spice notes in large amounts. In fact, some are not safe for bath and body products. But, this is also the case with spice essential oils, like Star Anise, as well. It just means that these types of scents are more likely to irritate the skin, so it is recommended to be cautious with these scents.

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Using Fragrance Oils in Scented CandlesIs There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Using Fragrance Oils in Scented Candles

Candle making is the perfect way to use any fragrance oil. You can use all of the Natures Garden fragrance oils to create homemade candles. While you can use all of our fragrance oils in diy candles, there are some that we would highly recommend using. Our Top Candle Scents  are some of the strongest fragrance oils for candles and are sure to pick up the mood in a room. One of these strong room scenting fragrances was used to create our Spring Smelly Jelly Recipe. In this recipe the scent of a freshly blooming lilac bush from the Lilac Fragrance Oil was a strong, pure aroma that was irresistible.

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Fragrance Oils Can Be CheaperIs There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Fragrance Oils Can Be Cheaper

In addition to being a more complex alternative to essential oils, fragrance oils are often cheaper than essential oils. Sometimes an essential oil is just way too expensive for daily use, so we are able to turn to a fragrance oil for an alternative. First, you can take an essential oil and combine it with other notes. This way you will still enjoy the scent of the essential oil, but you will need slightly less of the essential oil.

Another option for perfumes is creating a scent that smells just like the essential oil. This is perfect for the essential oils that would be extremely expensive. One example of this is Moonlight Tuberose Fragrance Oil. While the Tuberose Essential Oil is extremely expensive, it is possible to create a fragrance oil that contains the scent of Tuberose for much cheaper. So, you are able enjoy the aroma in this complex scent in your homemade recipes all the time!

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Essential OilsIs There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Essential Oils

Essential oils are created by extracting the essence of natural elements. These elements can be flowers, spices, woods, or even herbs. So, a single essential oil will have the pure scent of the natural element it came from. So, you won’t have too much complexity in the aroma of your essential oils. For example, in Cinnamon Leaf Ceylon Essential Oil you only have the scent of Cinnamon and in Apple Jack Peel the cinnamon is used as a middle note among many other scents. This means you can have the herbal scent of Lavender Essential Oil or the citrus scent of Tangerine California Essential Oil, but you won’t have any of the top notes or base notes to support your scent. While you can mix a few of these essential oils together to create an essential oil blend, these blends are not as complex as many fragrance oils. This means that essential oils are perfect for creating homemade products with a simple, elegant aroma.

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Are Essential Oils Natural? Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Are Essential Oils Natural?

Since essential oils are taken from natural elements and not created synthetically, they are natural. Most often, essential oils are extracted by a process called steam distillation. This involves putting the flower, plant, or herb into a still containing pressurized steam. Eventually, the cell walls burst and release the essence of this natural element. After, this essence is shocked with cool water. This mixture of essential oil and water will separate over time, which allows manufacturers to harvest the essential oil. Many believe that this method is the best to produce high quality essential oil. If you would like to learn about any of the other methods for extracting essential oils, then check out our Essential Oil Class!

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Can You Use Essential Oils to Make Soap?Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: Can You Use Essential Oils to Make Soap?

You absolutely can use essential oils for soap making! In fact, you can use most essential oils on the skin. So, we can include these essential oils in recipes for soap, lotion, and any other kind of bath and body product you want to create, too. We have used both the Lavandin Grosso Pure Essential Oil and the Patchouli Essential Oil to create the herbal Patchouli Infused Hair Conditioner Recipe.

You just need to make sure that you check the  IFRA Certificate for your essential oil to see what the usage rate is for your recipe. The PDF for the certificate is a blue color. The PDF certificate like is on the right side of the page of the essential oil that you are looking at. Just like fragrance oils, you can only use essential oils  in certain percentage rates. For example, you can only use Star Anise Essential Oil at a 0.1% rate for all bath and body recipes. Also, you can use the Bergamot Italian Rectified Essential Oil at a 5% rate for body products like soap and lotion, but only a 2% rate for nails or hair care products.

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil? : Can You Add Essential Oils to a Candle? Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil? : Can You Add Essential Oils to a Candle?

You can use Essential Oils to create some fantastic natural candles! While these candles won’t have the complex top notes or lingering base notes, essential oils are perfect for those that enjoy pure scents. We recommend using soy wax though.  Essential oils will not blend with paraffin waxes. If you have a favorite natural essential oil, then you will absolutely love a soy candle made with it. You just have to be cautious of a few things. First, you need to add your scent at a temperature below its flash point. Otherwise, the scent may evaporate immediately. You can find the flash point on the IFRA Certificate for each essential oil, which is on the page for each essential oil.  You will need to test to determine the proper amount of essential oil to use.  Each essential oil will be different.

Is There a Difference Between Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil?: How Much Do Essential Oils Cost?

While essential oils are made from natural elements, we are a bit limited in what can be used to become an essential oil. This is because some plants contain such small amounts of essence that it can take up to a hundred pounds to create a single ounce of one an essential oil. This can lead to some essential oils being extremely expensive, like the pure Tuberose essential oil. While some can cost quite a bit, not every essential oil is super expensive. Plumeria Candle Recipe: Sanitize and Prepare Your Work Space

Before you begin creating your scented candles, you will want to organize and clean your work space. You can start by making sure you have enough space to work on your candle. Also, you will need to wipe down your work space. Next, you will want to gather your supplies and equipment. If any of your equipment is dirty, then make sure that you wash them before beginning your project. After everything has been cleaned and prepared, you are ready to move on to the next step.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Prepare Double Boiler

For this recipe, you are going to need a double boiler. If you know how to create a double boiler for candlemaking, then move on to your recipe. Otherwise, we can explain to you how it works. Since you will need to use an pouring pot, this will act as the inner portion of your double boiler. The pouring pot will hold your melting wax and will be placed inside the larger pot. The larger pot will hold the heated water. Now that the double boiler has been made, it will be placed on the stove top on medium heat to melt your wax.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Get the Sunflower Wax Ready

First, you will need to use the double boiler to melt the Sunflower Wax. So, weigh out 30 grams of this wax and add it to the double boiler. As the wax melts, you should be mixing every so often. While the double boiler will help prevent scorching, you should keep an eye on it and stir occasionally. After your wax has entirely melted, you will be ready to move on to the next steps for coloring and scenting.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Adding the Candle ColorantPlumeria Candle Recipe: Adding the Candle Colorant

Then, you will be adding some candle colorant to your melted Sunflower Wax. Since we are going to be adding less than a drop of the liquid dye, we will need a toothpick to add this amount. So, take the toothpick and dip it into the purple Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye to your Sunflower Wax. Then, you will need to swirl the dipped toothpick in the melted wax. Make sure that you mix this well to fully incorporate the color.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Scent the Sunflower WaxPlumeria Candle Recipe: Scent the Sunflower Wax

Next, you are going to want to scent your freshly melted wax.  We will be using Plumeria Fragrance Oil, which is perfect for this candle and has a gorgeous floral scent. This fragrance is a sweet, fruity floral aroma that is composed of tropical Plumeria flowers, fresh fruity top notes, on a lovely green bottom. So, take three grams of this delightful candle oil and add it to the melted Sunflower Oil.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Preparing Your Flower Parts

Now,  you are going to start preparing the wax for your flower candle embeds. This wax will need to be a thin layer, which we will use to cut out the flowers. One way you can create this is pouring a small amount into the bottom of a mold, like the square loaf mold. Alternatively, you can line a pan with wax paper and pour a thin layer of wax in this. Either way, you will need to remove the wax at a point where it has set up but still warm.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Cut Out Your Flower PartsPlumeria Candle Recipe: Cut Out Your Flower Parts

Once your thin layers of wax are set up, you will want to cut out your petals and circles. You can use a knife, toothpick, or anything that you have that is pointy and tough enough to cut out your shapes. Also, you will need to have two circles and about twelve or so petals. The exact number of petals you will need depends on their size. Since you will need a couple extra petals on top of the candle, you will want to make a few extra petals. So, the exact number that you need for your flowers isn’t extremely important yet.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Creating the Other Flower PartsPlumeria Candle Recipe: Creating the Other Flower Parts

Now, you are going to need to repeat these previous steps using two different colors. For one of the rounds you will use one drop of purple liquid candle colorant. After these pieces are created, you can move on to the last set of flower parts. The last round will be colored with a tiny amount of the burgundy candle colorant. Again, you can use a toothpick to add this color to your melted Sunflower Wax.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Prepare the Candle JarPlumeria Candle Recipe: Prepare the Candle Jar

Before we start adding the candle wax to the container, you will need to prepare the candle jar. So, heat up your hot glue gun to adhere two of the CD-12 candle wicks to the bottom of your jar. You will want to make sure that they are as straight and even as possible. Otherwise, your finished candle won’t burn evenly and could result in tunneling. Plus, awkwardly placed wicks could ruin the pretty design! So, it would be best to be careful on this step.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Prepare the Purple LayerPlumeria Candle Recipe: Prepare the Purple Layer

Now, we are ready to create the first layer for our scented candle. We will start by weighing 3 ounces of Joy Wax and melting it in the double boiler. Remember to mix the melting wax every so often. Once this is melted we are going to add in the colorant. Put two drops of the purple Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye into the melted wax and stir to fully incorporate the color.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Pouring the Bottom LayerPlumeria Candle Recipe: Pouring the Purple Layer

Next, you are going to scent and pour the purple layer. So, add 0.3 ounces of the Plumeria Fragrance Oil to the melted purple wax and mix to incorporate the scent. After, you are ready to pour this layer into the jar. Once this layer has been carefully poured into the jar you will need to straighten your wicks before the wax sets up. You may want to have something across the top of the jar to steady your wicks.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Adding the Wax Embed Flowers Plumeria Candle Recipe: Adding the Wax Embed Flowers

Now, you are ready to start setting up your embed flowers. So, you are going to begin adhering your flower parts to the jar. Start by pressing one of your circles to the inside of the glass jar. Make sure that you hold the wax circle in place by pressing gently until it has completely adhered. Then, adhere the petals of a different color around the circle in a similar fashion to the picture to the left. You will continue to evenly space out the rest of your flowers around the jar. We had six flowers total, but this amount may vary depending on the size of your petals.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Preparing the White LayerPlumeria Candle Recipe: Preparing the White Layer

Next, you are going to create the white layer for behind your wax flower embeds. So, weigh out 11 ounces of Joy Wax and add it to the apothecary jar. You will need to melt the wax using the double boiler method with occasional mixing. After, you will need to add 1.1 ounces of the Plumeria Fragrance Oil. Before you go to pour in this layer you need to measure the temperature. Otherwise, you could possibly melt and mess up your wax flower embeds! Use a thermometer to determine when your wax has dropped to about 150 F, which is a safe temperature range to pour your white layer. Once it reaches this temperature you can pour in this layer.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Allow the White Layer to Set UpPlumeria Candle Recipe: Allow the White Layer to Set Up

Now that you poured in the white layer into the base of your candle, your creation is nearly complete! Just make sure that both of your wicks are centered. Make sure that you center your wicks before this white layer completely sets up. Then, you just need to wait for this top layer to harden and set up. Once your white layer has set up you can move on to creating the whipped topping.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Prepare the Whipped WaxPlumeria Candle Recipe: Prepare the Whipped Wax

Next, we are going to create the whipped wax topping for this candle. So, weigh out 8 ounces of Joy Wax and put it into the apothecary pot. After the wax has completely melted, you can add 0.8 ounces of the Plumeria Fragrance Oil. After, let your wax begin to set up. Before it completely sets up, you will need to whip the wax. Once the wax is well whipped and before it completely sets up, you can put the wax on top of the base of your candle.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Decorating the Top of the CandlePlumeria Candle Recipe: Decorating the Top of the Candle

Immediately after adding your whipped wax you will want to start adding your extra petals to the top of your candle. This will make sure that your petals stick to the candle and won’t fall off. So, start taking your differently colored petals and placing them on top of the candle. Make sure that you press them lightly into the wax, so they are able to stay in place. Once all your petals have been placed, use a pencil to curl your two candle wicks.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: Letting Your Candles Set UpPlumeria Candle Recipe: Letting Your Candles Set Up

Finally, your candles are complete! But, you are going to want to wait a day or two for your candle to cure before using your candle. While it can be tempting to use your candle early, it will be worth the wait and work so much better after letting it cure! Allowing your candle to cure for 24-48 hours will give the wax time to absorb the scent and provide a better scent throw.

Plumeria Candle Recipe: History of Plumeria Plumeria Candle Recipe: History of Plumeria

If you love the aroma of the Plumeria Fragrance Oil, then you may want to learn more about the history of this gorgeous, tropical flower. One interesting fact about these exotic flowers is that their origin was not actually Hawaii. While the gorgeous Plumeria flowers are commonly associated with these exotic islands, these were actually brought to Hawaii from Mexico in the nineteenth century. However, this beautiful flower has been incorporated in many lovely, tropical lands, like Hawaii, the Carribean, Indonesia, and many others! Neapolitan Candle RecipeNeapolitan Candle Recipe

Did you know that Neapolitan ice cream originated in the late 19th century in Italy? Most likely in the city of Naples. Italy was actually the originator or all ice cream, or gelato if you will. Neapolitan ice cream was actually inspired by Spumoni. Spumoni is a three flavored ice cream that used pistachio, cherry and chocolate ice cream with a fruit and nut layer in between. So why vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate? When ice cream made it’s way to the states these were the most popular flavors at the time. And in elementary school, do you remember sampling freeze-dried Neapolitan Ice Cream that the astronauts were able to take with them into space? I can remember! The texture was crumbly and it melted quickly the minute it touched your tongue, but I’ll stick to the regular Neapolitan ice cream thank you very much! Who doesn’t love this classic flavor?  You have three yummy flavors all in one bite! Today, Nature’s Garden is sharing with you their Neapolitan Candle Recipe. An eye-catching layered candle recipe to mimic this classic, old-time ice cream.  When you have finished creating this fun new candle, check out an easy recipe for Neapolitan Ice Cream Sandwich Cake! It’s truly magnifico!

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Ingredients You Will Need Found At Nature’s Garden

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Other Equipment and Supplies needed

  • 16 oz. Glass Apothecary Jar
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Stove
  • Scale
  • Toothpicks
  • Paper Bowl
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Hot Glue Sticks
  • Pecans Mold (flexiblemolds.com)

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: German Chocolate Cake Fragrance Oil

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: The 3 Fragrance OilsFor this candle recipe, we will be using three different Nature’s Garden fragrance oils for the chocolate, strawberry and vanilla layers of your homemade candle. For the chocolate layer, we have chosen German Chocolate Cake Fragrance Oil. It smells of rich chocolate cake with hints of pecans, vanilla, and coconut.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Strawberry Rhubarb Fragrance Oil

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Fragrance Oil

Next, we have Strawberry Rhubarb Fragrance Oil. This is a perfect blend of sweet strawberries and the tangy scent of rhubarb and an undertone of flaky pie crust.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Vanilla Insanity Fragrance Oil

Vanilla Insanity Fragrance Oil

The last oil is Vanilla Insanity fragrance oil. The strongest vanilla scent that we offer!  It is a sweet vanilla scent with notes of French Vanilla, creamed butter, cotton candy, maple sugar, and of course, vanilla beans.

All three of these fragrances will blend and compliment each other as your candle burns through the layers. You will have a house smelling of an Italian bakery!

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Prepare wax for the Strawberry Embeds Part 1

We will be using our Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax for our embeds.  Pillar of Bliss is a soy and paraffin blend that has wonderful scent retention as well as a wonderful cold and hot throw. To work with Pillar of Bliss, melt the wax to a temperature of 195 degrees F and add your color. Let the wax cool to 180 degrees Fahrenheit before adding your fragrance and let it cool to 175 degrees Fahrenheit before pouring into your molds. When melting any kind of wax, though, we suggest the double boiler method. Place on your stove, an old cake pan or pot with at least a 1/2 inch of water, place your pouring pot inside the cake pan or pot to create a double boiler.

For our Neapolitan Candle Recipe, we need to first prepare the strawberry embeds that will top your candle. Using a double boiler, melt 2 grams of Pillar of Bliss candle Wax.

Prepare the Strawberry Embeds:  Adding the Candle Dye

Prepare the Strawberry Embeds:  Adding the Candle DyeYou always want to be careful adding candle dye to your creation. Our Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye is concentrated and a little can go a long way.  Always start small to test the color you are trying to achieve. We suggest using toothpicks for this process. So take a toothpick, dip into the green Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye. Now you dip the toothpick into the melted wax. Mix to incorporate the color.

Then you fill only the leaf portion of the strawberries embed mold. Let this cool down and harden.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Preparing the wax for the Strawberries Embed Part 2

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Preparing the wax for the Strawberries Embed Part 2Next, we need to prepare the red wax for the strawberries. Using your double boiler, melt 10 grams of Pillar of Bliss, stirring to help with the melting process. Take your toothpick, dip it into your red Spectrum Liquid candle dye and add it to your melted wax.  Next, add 1 gram of Strawberry Rhubarb Fragrance Oil and stir to incorporate it. Now you can add this melted wax to into the remaining portion of the strawberry cavity. Allow this to setup before removing from the mold. Set your strawberry aside to top your candle later.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Preparing the Pecan Embeds

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Preparing the Pecan EmbedsNow we are going to work on our pecan embeds. First, you need to weigh out 20 grams of Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax. Then, using your double boiler melt the wax, stirring occasionally. Once this has melted, use a toothpick to add a tiny bit of brown Spectrum liquid candle dye and yellow Spectrum liquid candle dye. Stir to incorporate this and then pour into your pecan embed mold.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Preparing the Pecan Embeds
You will make 6 pecans total. Allow your pecan embeds to cool and setup.  Once they have setup, remove your pecans from the mold and set them aside
.  We will need them when we begin topping our candle later.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Prepping your Candle Jar

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Prepping your Candle JarNow you will want to prepare your candle jar. First and foremost you will need to have the correct size wick for your jar of choice. Prior to ordering wicks, measure the diameter of your jar. The size of your wick depends on the diameter of your jar. We are going to use 2 CD-10 size wicks. CD wicks are our most popular candle wicks. They are easy to work with and give a nice, clean burn for your candle. If you need further assistance with figuring out your wick size, check the description of the wicks for size recommendations based on the diameter of your jar. Once you have chosen your wick, you will use your hot glue gun to firmly adhere the wicks to the bottom of your container. Simply dab a bit of glue to the bottom of the metal part of your wick and press it firmly to the bottom of your jar. Repeat the process for the second wick. Keep in mind that as your candle cools, adjust your wicks so that they are straight and stay centered.

Another trick that you can do to make pouring your wax easier is to warm your jar beforehand. Simply turn your oven on to the lowest temperature, place the container on a cookie sheet and place in the oven. You do not want your jar hot, Just warm and still easy to handle without burning yourself. Warming your jars prior to pouring into them will help the wax adhere to the jars better.  This will help eliminate the wet spot look.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Prepare the  First Layer of Chocolate Wax

Let’s talk Joy Wax. Nature’s Garden Joy Wax is a blend of soy and paraffin that is amazingly easy to work with. It melts beautifully and sets up smooth and creamy. You also get an awesome cold and hot scent throw! When working with Joy Wax, we suggest melting to 200 degrees F. You can add your candle dye at this temperature, but allow it cool to a temperature of 170-175 degrees Fahrenheit before adding your fragrance. When your wax has cooled to 160-165 Fahrenheit you can pour your wax into your container of choice.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Prepare the  First Layer of Chocolate WaxWeigh out 90 grams of Joy Wax and melt using your double boiler. Once this has melted you will need to add a tiny amount of brown Spectrum liquid candle dye using your toothpick. You are going for a chocolate color. Mix this to blend well. When your wax has cooled to the suggested 170 degrees F you may now add 9 grams of German Chocolate Fragrance Oil. Stir well to incorporate the fragrance.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Prepare the  First Layer of Chocolate Wax

Next,  pour the candle wax into your prepared jar.You need to allow this wax to cool and set, adjusting your wicks so they stay centered in your candle jar.

Next, melt 90 grams of Joy Wax and melt in your double boiler. Once again, using a toothpick, add a tiny bit of red liquid candle dye to your melted wax and blend well. You are going for a pink color for this layer.

Allow the wax to cool to the suggested temperature and then add 9 grams of Strawberry Rhubarb Fragrance Oil. Stir this to blend the oil and wax well.

Pour the white wax directly on top of the pink wax and once again, allowing this layer to cool and harden, adjusting your wicks straight before moving on.

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Preparing the Second Chocolate Layer

Neapolitan Candle Recipe: Preparing the Second Chocolate LayerNow, it’s time to work on the second half of the candle. We will start with the chocolate layer. Weigh out 90 grams of Joy Wax and melt the candle wax in your double boiler. Once it has completely melted, add the brown Spectrum liquid candle dye using the toothpick method. Stir to incorporate the colorant and once the wax has cooled to the correct temperature, add 9 grams of German Chocolate Cake fragrance oil and stir well to combine. Pour this wax on top of your cooled and set strawberry layer. Allow this to cool and set up before moving on.

Once that has melted completely you can add in your toothpick of red Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye and mix to combine. Once again, allow the wax to cool before adding in 9 grams of Strawberry Rhubarb Fragrance Oil and mix well. Pour this strawberry layer onto the chocolate layer and allow to cool and harden before moving on.

Next comes the “whipped cream” for your candle. First, weigh out 150 grams of Joy Wax and once again, melt it in your double boiler. Once this is completely melted and cooled, add 15 grams of Vanilla Insanity Fragrance Oil and stir well to incorporate the scent. Carefully pour into your mixing container and allow this melted candle wax to begin to setup. Now, begin whipping the wax to a frosting-like consistency.

Next, top your candle with the whipped wax giving it the look of a whipped cream topped sundae and then place your strawberry and pecan embeds on top for the final touch! You may want to use your candle right away, but it is suggested to allow your candle to cure for about 3 days.  Then, trim your wicks to about 1/4″ before burning your homemade candle.

So would you like a cool looking cake to go along with your cool looking candle? Check out this very easy recipe for Neapolitan Ice Cream from Food Network. This amazing looking dessert is created with yummy layers of ice cream sandwiches, strawberry and mint chocolate ice cream and topped off with a chocolate hard shell topping. The colors of the ice cream are reminiscent of the original Neapolitan ice cream when it was first created but I believe you can use any flavors you choose. This recipe is perfectly easy and impressive! I know I am impressed with how it looks and I am also pretty sure I am ready for some dessert!

Denise's Favorite Fragrance OilsDenise’s Favorite Fragrance Oils

Hey there! My name is Denise and I have been with Nature’s Garden for two and a half years now. I started out in the shipping department and have recently moved into customer service. I was recently asked to name my 10 favorite fragrance oils and I honestly had to stop and think because after working here for a while I have accumulated a lot of favorite fragrances, but these 10 are my go-to, all-time favorite fragrance oils starting with my ultimate favorite: Beach Daisies Fragrance Oil.  So, drum roll please…. Denise’s favorite fragrance oils.

Denise's Favorite Fragrance Oils: Beach Daisies Fragrance OilDenise’s Favorite Fragrance Oils: Beach Daisies Fragrance Oil

Beach Daisies Fragrance Oil by Natures Garden, will sweep you away to the beach; where you will smell the aromas of fresh spring flowers and green grass while walking on the warm sands.  Natures Garden’s beach daisies fragrance begins with top notes of Asian lemongrass, dune grass, and daisy petals; followed by middle notes of gardenia bloom, ylang ylang, and clove leaf; sitting on base notes of blond woods, amber sands, and sheer musk.

Next, when Nature’s Garden tested Beach Daisies fragrance oil in CP soap, we found there was some acceleration. However, there was no ricing, no separation, and no discoloration. We also found that it maintained a very strong scent retention after cure. Due to the acceleration of the soap batter, we suggest soaping at lower temperatures.

If you chose to color your Beach Daisies Fragrance Oil candle, we suggest using 3 drops of yellow plus a little orange liquid candle dye per 4 pounds of wax. You can also shred an ample amount of yellow and orange color block into your melted wax. We highly suggest not using crayons to color your candles as they will clog your wick and your candle may not burn properly.

4 Leaf Clover fragrance oil by Natures Garden is a wonderful floral ozony blend of clover, green grass, with hints of fresh cut wisteria. Your line would not be complete without “the luck of the clover”.  NG Original Fragrance!

Did you know?  The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the common three-leaf clover. According to superstition, such leaves bring good luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally. Approximately 1 in every 10,000 clovers has the four-leaflet form. Clovers can have more than four leaflets. The most leaflets ever recorded is eighteen. According to legend, each leaflet represents something: the first is for hope, the second is for faith, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck. Legend also holds that if a lady hangs a four-leaf clover on her door, the next man to come in will become her husband.

Apple Jack Peel fragrance oil is truly fantastic and a Nature’s Garden Best Seller!

Did You Know?  Applejack is a very strong alcoholic beverage. This beverage originated in the American colonial era, which is believed to have roots from the French Apple Brandy Calvados.  Obviously, the beverage is made from apples, but first, the apples must be transformed into hard cider.  Then, that hard cider must be concentrated.  This can be done in two possible ways. First, there is the classic procedure of freeze distillation, also there is the option of true evaporative distillation. Either selection will work, but the actual word applejack comes from the word jacking which is one term for freeze distillation.

Hummingbird Fragrance Oil Candle Color RecommendationHummingbird Fragrance Oil Candle Color Recommendation

If you choose to color your Hummingbird Fragrance Oil candle we suggest using 1 drop burgundy liquid candle dye or you can use a small amount of shredded burgundy color block per 4 pounds of wax.  We suggest to never use crayons to color your candles as they will clog your wick and your candle may not burn properly.
