hair gel recipe Hair Gel Recipe Using Flax Seed

Making homemade hair gel has been on the creative teams list for some time now.  However, now knowing how easy this recipe is to make, we are overcome with all of the possibilities that this simple hair gel recipe provides.  In fact, one of the best aspects of this natural hair gel recipe is that it can be customized specifically for your hair type.

The basic recipe has 4 ingredients.  They are flax seed, distilled water, optiphen, and fragrance.  That is it!  Although as mentioned earlier other additives can be introduced.   Some of these examples would include:

Epsom Salt can be added to your recipe to intensify curls
Honey can be added to increase your hair gels hold
Jojoba Oil or Shea Butter are two great ingredients to provide moisturizing elements to your gel
Slippery Elm Bark can be added to increase your gels slip

Through our research, we have found that there are 2 options when it comes to creating your very own hair gel.  What it breaks down to basically is soaking overnight vs. boil time.  By soaking your flax seed the night before you decrease the amount of cooking time the hair gel is on the stove top.  Soaking will also boost your gel output.

This hair gel recipe is perfect for wavy or curly hair.  Not only will this gel moisturize and help define the curls, but it will not leave your curls stiff or crunchy.

There are currently 3 different versions of the hair gel recipe available on Natures Gardens website.  They are Silky Hair Gel Recipe, Curl Pop Hair Gel Recipe, and Shea Butter Hair Gel Recipe.  Each one is very easy to make and the recipes do vary slightly.  Although each one of these recipes do call for a recommended fragrance oil for scent, you can use any body safe fragrance oil that Natures Garden carries.  Just check out the Recommended Fragrance Usage for Bath Oils, Soaps, and Bath Gels (IFRA category 4) for the percentage rate of usage (located under the fragrance oil description area).

So, if you are ready to give this really easy to make recipe a try, let’s get started!  Today we will be making 8 ounces of Curl Pop Hair Gel.

Here is the list of ingredients and supplies you will need:
Scale
Distilled Water
Flax Seed Whole
Glass Bowl
Mixing Spoon
Pot
Spatula
Epsom Salt
Knee High Pantyhose (brand new)
Thermometer
NG Biolage Matrix Type Fragrance Oil
OPTIPHEN – Preservative
Whisk
Funnel
8oz. Purple PET Bullet Bottle
Black Lotion Pumps 24/410

soaking the flax seed overnight
Step 1:
Place your glass bowl onto your scale and tare out the weight.  Then, carefully weight out 43 grams of flax seed and tare out the weight again.  Next, to the bowl add 440 grams of distilled water.  Using your mixing spoon, give these two ingredients a quick stir.  Finally, cover the bowl and place it into the refrigerator overnight.

adding epsom salt to the flax seed mixture
Step 2:
After your flax seed has soaked overnight, take the bowl out of the fridge.  Remove the cover.  Using your spatula, scrap all of the mixture into your pot.  Now, to the mixture weight out and add 3 grams of Epsom Salt.  Once added, place the pot on the stove top and set the heat to high.  Generously stir the mixture as it is heating.

heating up the flax seed gel

Step 3:  Once the mixture is at a consistent boil, reduce the heat to a medium setting.  Keep stirring the mixture.

flax seed suspended in the gel

Step 4:  Let the mixture cook for 5 minutes on the medium heat setting.  Remember to keep the mixture moving by stirring.  When you see the flax seed staying suspended in the mixture, remove the pot from the heat source and turn it off.

straining out the flax seed

Step 5:  Now, get a container and place your brand new pantyhose over the opening.  Carefully pour the gel into the hosiery.   Once the mixture is all there, immediately rinse out the pot (this will save you scrubbing time later).

Step 6:  Caution the mixture is hot!  Now, apply pressure to the pantyhose to strain out as much gel as possible (if you use tongs, just be careful not to put a run in your pantyhose).  You will notice that you really have to apply force to get the gel out among all of the flax seed.  When finished, remove the pantyhose.

monitor your hair gel temperature

Step 7:  To make this step less messy, we transferred the gel back into the mixing bowl.  Temperature is very important to this step, so place your thermometer in your hair gel now.  Once the temperature of the gel reaches 120 degrees Fahrenheit, quickly add 3 grams of Optiphen and 13 grams of NG Biolage Matrix Type Fragrance Oil.

Step 8:  Slowly and carefully, use your whisk to incorporate the fragrance oil and Optiphen into the gel.

bottle up the hair gel

Step 9:  Once the hair gel has cooled, place your funnel into your bottle, and fill.   Then,  lid with a pump.

Your Curl Pop hair gel is now ready to use.  Simply pump the gel into the palm of your hand and apply as you normally do.  You are going to love how great your hair smells and looks all day long!

Happy Fathers Day

Happy Fathers Day from Natures GardenHappy Father’s Day

We at Natures Garden would like to extend a very Happy Fathers Day to all of the dads out there.  This is your day to celebrate.

“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.” – Bill Cosby

Officially being recognized as a national holiday in 1972 by President Nixon, Fathers Day is a celebration of male parenting.  It is a holiday to show all fathers our appreciation and gratitude.   It is a great day to shower our wonderful dads with all the love and admiration they so rightfully deserve.

Fathers are our protectors, our providers, and our mentors.  And, without them, we would not be here.

So, to all of you amazing dads; thank you for all that you do.  Thank you for being there to lean on when the times get rough.  Thank you for pushing us to be the best person we can be.  Thank you for supporting us and believing in our sometimes crazy and outlandish ventures.  Thank you for loving us unconditionally through the good, the bad, and the ugly years.  And, thank you for teaching us to be strong when facing uncertainties.  But, most of all; thank you for all of the sacrifices you made for us throughout the years.

So, enjoy your day Dads; sit back and relax.  Know that you are needed, loved, and appreciated!

My dad absolutely LOVES homemade cold process soap.  I will never forget the first time he tried some.  He said, “What you just came up with could be a gold mine!”  Well, I had to fill my dad in on two things:  1.  I did not create the concept of making soap from scratch, and 2. I plan to only sell the raw ingredients to make soap.  Since he had never tried real, homemade soap, he thought all soap was like the store bought soap.  For all of my life, he was a Zest kind of guy.  I am proud to report that my dad no longer uses store bought soap.  He says that “homemade soap is the best thing someone really smart ever created.”  I will have to agree!

So, if you would like to make your dad some wonderful, homemade soap from scratch, Natures Garden has all of the ingredients that you will need!   We offer fabulous soaping oils, butters, soap scents, essential oils, colorants, and soap lye.  Here is the recipe that is my dad’s favorite:  Shea Butter Cold Process Soap

Patriotic Candle

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

patriotic candle recipeMake your own Patriotic Candle

This Fourth of July, why not add a little more pizzazz to the party!

Making your own Patriotic Candle using beeswax and Pillar of Bliss is a fun and easy project that even the little ones can help with.

You can easily make a candle for each political party using Natures Garden’s Political Fragrance Oil Line.  This would include: Democrat Fragrance Oil, Republican Fragrance Oil, and Independent Fragrance Oil.

For this blog, the creative team at Natures Garden is going to show you the step by step instruction for just how easy it is to make your very own patriotic candle.  The instruction is very simple to make one 16oz. candle and you will only need a few supplies to complete it.

Here are the ingredients you will need:
Pillar of Bliss Wax
Beeswax
Political Fragrance Oil- we are using Democrat fragrance for this candle
Red Spectrum Candle Dye
Blue Spectrum Candle Dye
(2) CD 12 Wicks

You will also need:
Star Cookie Cutter
Candle Jar
Scale
Cutting Board
A piece of wax paper
Mixing Spoon
(2) Ziploc Bags
(2) Disposable Spoons
Hot Glue Gun

heating the water
To begin, we will be melting down our beeswax.  In order to do this, fill a pot with about 3 inches of water.  Place your pot on your stove top (on a medium to low heat setting.)

double boiler method

Next, weigh out 50 grams of the beeswax.  Place all of the pastilles into your pouring pot (or a second smaller pot).  Then, place the second pot into the first pot.  This method of melting down the beeswax is known as the double boiler.  Keep an eye on the beeswax.  Once the water starts heating up, it will not take that long to get the beeswax to a liquid state.

weigh out the pillar of bliss

Plug in your hot glue gun.  While you are waiting on the beeswax to melt, get your 2 Ziploc bags.  Using your scale, weigh out and place 225 grams of Pillar of Bliss wax into each bag.

adding democrat scent

Next, place one bag back on the scale.  Add 18 grams of Democrat fragrance oil.  Repeat with the second bag.  While the second bag is still on the scale, place 4 drops of Spectrum Red Candle Dye into the bag.  Then, seal each bag shut.  Then, shake them vigorously.  This will disperse the fragrance oil among the wax as well as incorporate the red dye.  At this point, you will have 1 bag of white wax and 1 bag of red wax.  Set aside.

scenting and coloring the pillar of bliss

Check the beeswax.  If it is melted, place 2 drops of Blue Spectrum Candle Dye into the wax.  Using the mixing spoon, gently stir the blue color in.  Place the beeswax back in the heat source.

coloring the beeswax

Now, let’s prep the candle jar.  Using your hot glue gun, attach both CD 12 wicks to the bottom of your candle jar.  Make sure the wicks are centered and equally spaced apart.

prepping your candle jar

Next, lay out a piece of wax paper.  Remove your beeswax from the heat source and turn your stove off.  Next, add 4 grams of Democrat Fragrance oil to the blue beeswax and stir.

scenting your beeswax

Once incorporated, carefully pour the beeswax onto one area of the wax paper.  Allow this to set up at room temperature.  This should take a few minutes.

cooling the beeswax

When the beeswax has cooled to the touch, remove it from the wax paper.  Set the beeswax on your cutting board.  Then, using your star cookie cutter, cut out 1 star shape.

making a star embed

Next, place the star into your candle jar.  Try to center the star between your candle wicks.  Press firmly to allow the beeswax to adhere to the side of the jar.

adhere the star

Once the star is adhered, get your two disposable spoons and white and red wax.  Starting with the red wax, place several scoops into the jar.  Then, gently flatten the wax across the bottom of the jar.  Once you are happy with the amount of red, repeat with the white wax.

layering your candle

Try to keep your layers all the same size.  You will be rotating the layers between the red and white wax.  Keep doing this until your candle is filled.  Remember to straighten your wicks as you work your way through filling the jar.

unique candle recipe

When your candle jar is full, simply trim your excess wicking.  Then, light and enjoy your patriotic candle.

So now that you have the instructions to make your very own patriotic candle, feel free to make it your own.  Really, once the beeswax is colored, scented, and cooled; any other portion of this project can be made with the assistance of children.  They really have a blast cutting out the stars and filling in the layers (with adult supervision).

Have Fun With It!

Alabama Gathering

Alabama soap gatheringHello everyone!

I have just recently returned from The Alabama Soap and Candle Gathering that occurred last week.

After a very long drive of 12 hours we arrived at our hotel, settled in, and got plenty of rest.  I just knew that the Alabama Gathering this year was going to be a great event for everyone attending.

The next morning, when the day arrived, we were ready to go!  As we were setting up the Natures Garden booth, our customers were so excited to see everything that we had brought.  You could actually feel the anticipation as we got everything unpacked.  There was a lot to get organized.  Once again, we brought our entire fragrance oil line containing 816 fragrance oils, our various essential oils, and even the array of  flavorings Natures Garden carries.

As for the examples of products that you can make using Natures Garden’s ingredients, we had some exciting recipes to share.  The famous Pigs In The Mud Candle was there, complete with adorable pink pig tarts.  The colorful Gummy Bear Candle made its debut.  And the show stopper, the Ducks on the Pond Candle came too.  This is a super cute combination candle using both gel and pillar of bliss wax.

As for bath and body recipes, we brought examples of two of our newest recipes.  The lovely Lavender Cold Process Soap complete with purple swirls, whipped topping, and lavender buds sprinkled on top.  And, finally the Mechanics soap.  A great and easy to make melt and pour recipe which gently exfoliates.  It seemed that many customers really liked the Mechanics soap because it was not gritty like other hand cleaners.

During the Alabama Gathering we met so many fun and fabulous people.  As for the seminars and educational classes, Amanda Stott did an amazing job teaching the art of making candle tarts.  Benjamin Aaron also gave a wonderful seminar covering his adventures of teaching soap making for nonprofit outreach.  And, another one of my favorite speakers from the Alabama Gathering was Deborah Bruijn.  She spoke about skincare and the amazing benefits Jojoba provides.

I truly had an amazing time at the Alabama Gathering.  I enjoyed meeting a ton of new and excited homemade crafters.  They just brought so much energy and excitement to this gathering that I did not want to see it end.

In closing, I have to stress that if you have never been to the Alabama Gathering, you should plan to go.  Next year, the event will be taking place June 12th and 13th, 2015.

I also want to extend a huge THANK YOU to the Alabama Soap and Candle Association for the amazing 2 days we got to spend with all of you!  Well y’all until next time!

Have a fabulous Day!
Cindy
