Giraffe Bubble Bar Recipe: Let’s talk About the Ingredients

Before starting on our recipe, we’ll talk about some of the ingredients we are using. The first ingredient is what gives the bubble bar its bubbles! Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, or SCI.  This gentle surfactant is derived from coconut. It is a foaming and cleansing agent that will leave your skin silky and smooth!

Baking soda is best know for it’s cleaning and deodorizing properties. This gentle alkaline is amazing at leaving the skin soft and smooth, as well as your hair too!

Cream of tartar will give your product a light and fluffy feeling. It acts as a stabilizer and helps the other ingredients adhere to each other.

Corn Starch is the perfect ingredient to help sooth irritated skin and it also leaves your skin soft! The fragrance we chose was our Cucumber Fragrance Oil. This is a popular seller here at Nature’s Garden. True cucumber scent with an undertone of violet.

Giraffe Bubble Bar Recipe: Other Ingredients Needed

  • Mixing Bowls (you will need 2)
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Parchment Paper or Silicone Baking Mat
  • Scale
  • Knife
  • Rolling Pin

Giraffe Bubble Bar Recipe: Total Weights and Amounts

  • 410 grams (2 cups) Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
  • 460 grams (2 cups) Sodium Bicarbonate- Baking Soda
  • 224 grams (2/3 cup) Cream of Tartar
  • 72 grams (2/3 cup) Corn Starch
  • 200 grams (2/3 cup) Vegetable Glycerin
  • 24 grams (2 TBSP) Sesame Seed Oil
  • 14 grams Cucumber Fragrance Oil
  • 3 drops Yellow Oxide FUN Soap Colorant
  • 6 drops Brown Oxide FUN Soap Colorant
  • 3 drops Orange Oxide FUN Soap Colorant
  • 6 drops Red Oxide Fun Soap Colorant

Note: While we give you both weight and volume measurements, we highly recommend using a scale as the weight measurements will be more precise amounts.

Giraffe Bubble Bar Recipe: Prepping Your Supplies and Work Area

As with any recipe you should always prep your supplies and work area. This helps in creating your craft without stopping to look for your ingredients. First thing is to clean your work space and ensure that you have enough room to work and lay your dough down. Next, give your utensils and scale a quick clean with some soap and water. Lastly, have all your ingredients ready for measuring and withing easy reach! For sanitary reasons go ahead and put your rubber safety gloves on.  Just a few preventative steps will help things move along smoothly!

Our first step will be measuring and combining our dry ingredients. You will need a large mixing bowl and your scale. Set your scale to grams.  Next, weigh out 410 grams of Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, 460 grams of Sodium Bicarbonate- Baking Soda, 224 grams of Cream of Tartar, and 72 grams of Corn Starch. Give these ingredients a nice mixing with your hands, breaking up any clumps as you go.

Next comes the wet stuff! You will need another mixing bowl ( or you can simply add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredient bowl) and your gram scale. Now weigh out 200 grams of Vegetable Glycerin, 24 grams of Sesame Seed Oil and 14 grams of Cucumber Fragrance Oil.

 

Giraffe Bubble Bar Recipe: Mixing Everything Together

Let’s add the wet and dry ingredients together! If you have mixed your wet ingredients separately go ahead and dump them in with your dry. If you add your wet straight to the dry you can start mixing with your hands making sure that you are breaking up any lumps as you go. Mix until you have the right consistency (you should have a nice, smooth workable dough). If your dough is to crumbly after mixing together, you can add a bit more vegetable glycerin. Be careful to not add too much or the bubble bar will not set up properly.

The third step in our recipe will be separating the bubble bar dough. For this you will need your 2 mixing bowls. You will divide the dough into 2 equal portions. Each portion will be a different color. We have included a color chart to help you achieve the correct color for the spots and the “skin” of the giraffe.

Bowl 1:

  • Brown Oxide- 6 drops
  • Orange Oxide- 3 drops
  •  Black Oxide- 6 drops
  •  Red Oxide- 6 drops

Bowl 2:

  • Yellow Oxide- 3 drops

Now that your dough is separated, let’s start adding color.  We will work on the spots and inner color of the bubble bar. To the first bowl, add your 6 drops of Brown Oxide, 3 drops of Orange Oxide, 6 drops of Black Oxide and 6 drops of Red Oxide FUN Soap Colorant. With your gloved hands mix the colorant into your dough until you have achieved an orange brown color.  Roll the dough into a ball and set it aside, for now.

Next, let’s create the “skin” color of the giraffe. For this you will add 3 drops of Yellow Oxide FUN Soap colorant to your second bowl of dough. With clean gloved hands mix this colorant into your dough until you have a nice, pale yellow color.

Now that our dough is separated and colored, we are ready to start rolling the layers. For this step you will use your silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Dust whichever you have chosen to use with some baking soda. This will help keep the dough from sticking when it is time to roll the dough. You should also dust your rolling pin with some baking soda to help prevent sticking.

Our first layer will be the yellow layer. Go ahead and take your yellow dough ball and lay it in the center of the surface of your mat or paper. Now roll your ball into a flat, rectangular shape.  You will want this layer about 1/4 inch in thickness.

Next up is our Orange brown layer. Before you start rolling, however, you need to pull of about 30 grams of the dough and set this aside. This portion will be for the spots. Place the remaining dough in the center of the yellow rectangle dough and start rolling this layer out. You may add some baking soda to your rolling pin before you start to prevent sticking. Roll this layer out to the size or as close to the size of the yellow layer and at 1/4 inch thick. Once you have finished, you will be all set to move onto rolling the bubble bar dough into a loaf.

Now that your layers are rolled out, you are ready to roll them into a loaf. Turn your silicone mat or parchment paper so that the mat or paper is vertical. Lift up on the edge of the paper or mat that is closest to your body. Begin to carefully roll the dough in the same way you would a pumpkin roll. Slowly roll the dough evenly as you go, watching to make sure everything stays lined up.

Now that your dough is in its rolled up completely, we will begin using the orange brown colored dough we set aside to create our “spots”. Giraffe spots are not perfect in size and shape. This is the look you will want to go for. Pull off irregular size pieces of the reserved dough and add it to the yellow portion of your bubble bar. (Having trouble getting a good pattern in your head? Try Googling “giraffe” and find a pattern you can follow!)  Once your loaf is completely covered you will be ready to slice it up into individual bars.

Let’s cut this loaf into slices! This recipe will make about 8 slices, depending on how thick you choose to slice your loaf. Using a sharp knife, slice the bubble bar into 1-2 inch slices. Once your loaf is completely sliced, lay the portions out on a flat surface to set up. Our bubble bars took approximately 48-72 hours to set up completely. This may take longer, depending on the climate of your  environment.

Your Giraffe Bubble Bar is ready to use! When it’s bath time, simply crumble a slice of bar under warm, running bath water and enjoy the bubbles that will froth up into your tub and have a nice, long soak! You will emerge from your bath smelling sweet, fresh and feeling soft and clean!

Have you ever looked at the beauty of a giraffe? I mean, really watched them when you visit a zoo?  They are amazing creatures! Majestic in their movements, they roam the open grasslands in small groups. A giraffe’s height is both an advantage and a disadvantage. While towering at a height ranging from 14 to 18 feet tall they have the ability to spot predators. Their height helps them eat from the leaves of trees since the disadvantage in their height is bending down. It is incredibly difficult for them and it leaves them in a vulnerable state to be attacked.  Luckily, giraffes only need to drink once every several days since most of their water intake is from the leaves they consume. They can also run a steady 35 miles an hour over short distances and comfortably at 10 miles per hour over longer distances. 

Giraffes are truly beautiful animals and their eyelashes! They are to die for! Another fun giraffe fact is that a group of giraffes are called a tower! Kind of fitting, right? Towers usually consist of females and babies, however genders will vary and they can come and go as they please.

Blackberry Bling Bling Bubble Bar Recipe Clean, Sanitize, and Be Safe

Before beginning, you are going to want to create a workspace that is safe for both you and your product. Firstly, clean and sanitize any supplies that you will be needing for this recipe. Also, tidy up your workspace to make sure that you have an adequate space to create these bubble bars. Next, make sure that you have all of the necessary safety equipment to complete this recipe. Especially, make sure that you have some gloves and a mask on for this recipe as some of the powders in the recipe tend to float up into the air.

Initially, you will be working on weighing all of the dry ingredients you will be using for this recipe. So, retrieve a medium sized mixing bowl and your measuring devices, you can use your scale or some measuring cups and spoons. Then, weigh out the 272 grams, or 1 cup, of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, 230 grams, or 1 cup, of Sodium Bicarbonate – Baking Soda, 112 grams, or 1/3 cup, of Cream of Tartar, and 36 grams, or 1/3 cup, of Corn Starch into your bowl in the specified amounts.

Then, you will want to mix these ingredients well to fully incorporate all the powders. You can use your hands or a mixing spoon, but we have found that it is easiest to mix with gloved hands. Further, you should pay attention to any clumps existing in this mixture. You should break up any clumps to make the mixture as smooth and evenly mixed as possible. Otherwise, your final product may have pockets of powder that never mix with the necessary ingredients.

Next, you are going to be weighing your wet ingredients. So, retrieve a small mixing bowl and tare its weight from your scale. Now, add the 100 grams, or 1/3 cup, of Vegetable Glycerin, 12 grams, or 1 Tablespoon, of Macadamia Nut Oil, and 7 grams of Blackberry Bling Bling Fragrance Oil to the small bowl in their proper amounts. You will be using this mixture in the following step, so keep the bowl close.

Now, you are going to combine all of your previously weighed ingredients. Grab your bowl of weighed wet ingredients and add it to your bowl of weighed dry ingredients. Mix this well to incorporate everything. Also, you have the option to add a bit more vegetable glycerin to the mixture if it is a bit crumbly. However, you do not want to add too much as this would make the recipe too wet to create a proper bubble bar. So, we’d recommend mixing in no more than a few drops at a time to avoid going over your limit.

Next, you will be adding the FUN Soap Colorant to the mixture you have created thus far. So, take your combined bowl of wet and dry ingredients and add the correct amount of Deep Purple FUN Soap Colorant, which is 7 grams. Mix the color in thoroughly and make sure that there aren’t any pockets of soap colorant left behind after you mix. So, the dough should be an even, pretty shade of purple all the way through the mixture.

Next, you are going to be adding some shimmery mica powder to your purple dough mixture. So before you begin scooping, you are going to weigh out and add 1 gram of the diamond dust mica. So, use your scale to weigh the proper amount in your small bowl that you have used in a previous step. Then, mix the mica ingredient into your purple dough mixture. Also, try to make sure that you mix the dough thoroughly to create an even shimmer in your mixture and continue to break up any clumps that you may see throughout the creating process.

Now, the mixture is ready for you to create the scoops. So, retrieve your small stainless steel scoop to shape your bubble bars. Simply spoon some of your dough mixture into your metal scoop and pack it into the scoop. You can pack it by pressing on the dough while it is inside the scoop. Doing this ensures that your bubble bar will hold its little ice cream scoop form. After, release the dough from the scoop onto your parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Repeat this until all of your dough has been scooped on your parchment paper or silicone baking mat.

Next, you will be completing a few last steps to complete your bubble bars. After you have all your little ice cream scoops on your parchment paper or silicone baking mat, then you are ready to add the finishing touches. Sprinkle about a gram or so of the diamond dust mica onto the scoops to add some extra shimmer to your products. You can add more if you’d like to, it all depends on how much mica dust you’d want to add. Then, you should let the bubble bars sit undisturbed, so they can harden and set up completely. This should take a couple of days, but they need this time to harden.

Finally, your bar bars are ready for you to use! After a few days have passed, your creations will be ready for you to take to the bath.  It is fairly simple to use this product, just crumble it under some warm, running water and there you have it! Since these bubble bars are smaller, you may want to use a couple if you are bringing them to a bubble bath.
