basil Basil

Hi everyone! Are you looking for new crafts? Maybe a new herb to use in your bath and body products? Or maybe it’s your first time making soaps or bath and body products and you’re looking for a good herb to use? Well here it is! How about basil? Basil is a wonderful herb that can be used in a variety of ways in many different products and industries! It is most well known for being used in foods and for culinary purposes, but it can also be used for medicinal purposes, skin care, hair care, bath and body products and even soaping!

Basil, or otherwise known as ocimum basilicum, is an herb in the family Lamiaceae that is mainly used for culinary purposes. It is native to India, New Guinea, Southeast Asia, and China. It was first domesticated in India and has been cultivated for over 5,000 years there. The word basil comes from the Greek word βασιλεύ, meaning “king.” In India, it is believed that placing basil in the mouths of the dying ensures that they will reach God. Ancient Egyptians believed that basil would open the gates of heaven for their loved ones and in Europe, basil is placed in the hands of the dead to ensure a safe journey.

There are many medicinal benefits to using basil as well. There are anti-septic properties in the leaves that help treat wounds, ulcers, and cuts. It is also rich in vitamin A which helps to treat many eye problems such as sore eyes and blindness. Basil also helps to prevent glaucoma, cataracts, and degeneration of the eyes. Basil tea is said to help promote milk production in nursing mothers and it is said that mothers should take basil right before or after birth to promote blood circulation. The leaves are rich in phytonutrients and healing oils that treat malarial and dengue fevers. The leaves also help the body to form new blood cells and renew energy levels that can help stop weight gain. Basil can also be used to treat colds, sore throats, throat and mouth infections, headaches and migraines, restlessness and the pain caused from chicken pox, measles and small pox. It also helps to sharpen the mind and is a great stress reliever.

Many bath and body can contain basil as well. Many common products are lotions, ointments, creams, massage oils, bath teas, bath bombs, bath teas, facials tonics and masks, and shampoos and conditioners. Basil is a great exfoliant for the skin, and also helps to treat acne and prevent blackheads, and treats many skin infections and even ringworm. It can prevent gray hair and hair loss and also gives hair a better luster when used as an infusion in shampoos and conditioners. Basil also helps to strengthen the hair and rejuvenate the hair follicles. When basil is used for soap making, it gives the soap a wonderful aroma, is a gentle skin exfoliant and treats acne problems.

Wondering how to find this awesome product on our site? Just type “basil” in the search bar! That will take you directly to a page titled “Search Results for “Basil.”” It shows our ground basil leaf, and all of our wonderful basil fragrances! Our basil class is also available right there! Cocoa Butter

This entry was posted in bath and body, bath products, Enlightened by Layla, melt and pour soap, Natures Garden, Soap making supplies and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

cocoa butter Cocoa Butter

For all you crafters out there, do you like to use cocoa butter in your products? Well guess what? We offer cocoa butter here at Nature’s Garden! Awesome right? We offer natural cocoa butter, (not deodorized so that it still smells faintly of chocolate) and we also have deodorized cocoa butter. But hold on, it gets even better! We also offer Cocoa Butter Melt and Pour Soap for all of you soap makers out there!

Cocoa butter is considered a luxury butter that is actually a saturated, very hard fat. It can be used be in very many products. The obvious, chocolate, is just pure delicious. I couldn’t help but mention it, what girl doesn’t love chocolate! Now that I got my chocolate thoughts out, it can also be used in very many of our products here at Nature’s Garden. Cocoa butter can be used in bath and body products such as lip balms, lotions, soaps, scrubs, massage bars, and lip gloss.

There are many benefits to your skin when using cocoa butter in your bath and body products. Cocoa butter is very high in antioxidants which helps fight signs of aging and many skin stressers. Come on ladies, who doesn’t want to look younger? It helps fight signs of aging, how awesome is that? Many people also use cocoa butter to help reduce their stretch marks, however there are no guarantees that it actually helps. Cocoa butter also helps to keep your skin hydrated and some people also use to help with skin irritations like dermatitis and eczema. See why so many bath and body products contain cocoa butter? It’s just amazing!

Our cocoa butter at Nature’s Garden is consisted of many essential fatty acids: palmitic (28%), stearic (33%), linoleic (3%) and oleic (35%). For all the soap makers, when using cocoa butter in your products, make sure to use the right amount. If too much is used, it can result in a very hard and dry soap. Use it in conjunction with unsaturated oils like castor oil or olive oil or with sticky ingredients like lanolin or shea butter. The easiest way to get to our cocoa butter on our website, is to type “cocoa butter” into our search bar at the top of our site. It will take you right to a page titled “Search Results for “Cocoa Butter.”” That page shows all of the cocoa butter products we offer. You can choose from our Golden Natural Cocoa Butter or our Deoderized Cocoa Butter. Our cocoa butter melt and pour is also available on that page as well.

Cocoa butter is awesome to use in your bath and body products! It is a fat actually taken from cocoa beans! Come on ladies, if you don’t already use it, I’m sure you’re dying to now! It actually helps signs of aging and I know you just can’t get the thought of that out of your head! This is a great product to try in your next projects, and watch out for more Enlightened by Layla! Please Don’t hesitate to contact us with any thoughts, questions, or concerns you may have! Looking for more fun projects? Try one of our free classes or recipes!

Addicted to Creative Soap Making

This entry was posted in bath and body, bath products, creative, emulsifier, Fragrance Oils, homemade, Natures Garden, soap, Soap making supplies and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

Fragrance Oils1.      What’s your name & Your Company Name:  Liz Holding, L.H. Soaps & Sundries

2.      Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I decided to go into business for a silly and simple reason… I love to make soap, and I am really addicted to it.  If I didn’t share what I make, I would probably drown under bars and bars of soap!  I also love the spectrum of fragrances, playing around with different things, and seeing what I can come up with.  Motivation?  Well, I have always loved to make things with my hands.  As long as I can remember, I have fiddled with various things… I have always had a right-brained curiosity for art, design, and creations, yet as I got older, I developed a very left-brained analytical mind as well.  One year, I channeled this energy into mischievously cross-breeding my mom’s favorite rose bushes into an odd new breed.  From there, I knew I had a love for science.  I got a degree in chemistry and got my first job as a formulation chemist.  I learned how to make soap in my college chemistry class, and I learned all about emulsion science in my formulation job.  Since then, I have honed my soap making skills, and because of my knowledge of emulsions, have been able to create an incredible set of lotion formulas.  Soap making is the perfect craft for a right-left brainer, because it allows me to stay artistic while using science and analysis.  I actually learned how to make soap back in 2002 during chemistry class.  I have made batch after batch since then, and decided that I have sufficient knowledge of the craft to begin selling.  10 years after beginning, I began to seriously sell, so I have really only been in business for maybe a little less than a year.

3.      What products do you make and sell?  My shop has a few staple items in it, such as soap, lotions and creams, lip balm, shower gel, etc.  However, I am always experimenting and have been known to pull out some custom creations including sugar soaps, bath syrup, face masks, and more.

4.      What are your business goals?  Ultimately my goal is to be able to quit my day job and focus on L.H. Soaps full time.  I would like to procure several wholesale accounts and attend many more craft fairs and events than I already do.  I love custom creations for special occasions as well, which is another aspect of my business that I would like to develop more.

5.      What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  I have actually only ever gotten Nature’s Garden fragrance oils, because I have heard so many wonderful things about them.  The extensive reviews and testing for each fragrance is so incredibly helpful.  Currently, I am loving the Vanilla Pear and Vanilla Bean fragrances, although every single one I received is amazing.

2.      Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  My wife, Sherry, came home with a home crafted soap and I (Eric) couldn’t get enough!  YouTube, the Internet and everything else consumed both of our waking days and nights to learn how to make our own.  From there, Sherry and I have created our own products based on natural, simple and “local” body healing ingredients that our family could use without all those “manufactured ingredients”.  We have been crafting our products for almost two years and there is no end in sight.

3.      What products do you make and sell?  We make cold process soap, soy candles, lip balm, lotions, body balms and ointments.

4.      What are your business goals?  We would like to be able to grow our business so Sherry can stay at home and care for our two girls.

5.      What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?   We really love your fragrance oils. They are all high quality and the price is wonderful. Our favorites and best sellers are Balsam & Cedar, Seaside Cotton, Spiced Cranberry and Christmas Memories. We used them in both our soaps and candles. We also love to use your flavorings in our lip balm.

Melt and Pour Soap Interview

This entry was posted in bath and body, Fragrance Oils, fragrances, melt and pour soap, Natures Garden, soap colorants, soap dyes, vanilla white stabilizer and tagged , , , , , , , on by .

photoI started a couple years ago, and I love art and crafts. I have always loved bath products, color, and fragrances. What better than soaps where you get all that! I figured I’d play around making melt and pour, since I didn’t need to experiment with lye, and have the fun of creating. I needed some other things in my hair salon, besides shampoo, and jewelry, plus my customers are always asking me “what’s next? What’s new?” I thought I’d do a few soaps…well, I started ordering fragrances, etc. And I was hooked. And so were my customers. They wouldn’t let me stop making them. I’m now at the point of expanding my soap business, starting with Etsy. So far it’s been fun talking with people from all over!

Wow! What do I most like about your company? That’s a hard one. Besides customer service, wonderful fragrances, and value… I’d have to say the one thing I love love love, is your vanilla stabilizer. I was having a heck of a time with my soaps turning brown from vanilla. This has worked beautifully in my melt and pour soaps. A big “Thank you!”

I don’t have a website, and haven’t really been on Facebook much, but will be. Cindy Tedeschi is my face book name.

I haven’t been on twitter yet… I’m too busy checking out YouTube videos. It’s like having a craft class as often as you like. I have learned so much from so many talented people out there!

I’d like to make my soap business a part time hobby for now, eventually perhaps, more full time. I’ve been a hairdresser for 30 years, and love it. My joints from all the years are starting to get old, and one day, I might not be able to make an income doing hair any longer, and soaps is just a great thing to do!

My store name on Etsy is CLTCRAFTS

My hair salon is Tahoe Hair Co. South lake Tahoe , Ca. Where this soap picture was taken from.

Thank you again for taking the time to read this, and thank you for all you do.

Sincerely, Cindy Tedeschi
