How Do You Make Scented Lotion?: Emulsifiers

One of the most important parts of making lotion is the emulsifier. This is the ingredient that keeps everything together because the oils and water that are being mixed would separate otherwise. Since oils are non-polar, they only want to mix with other non-polar substances. But, we want these non-polar oils to mix with polar water. Similarly, polar water only wants to mix with other polar things. So, we need an ingredient that has both polar and non-polar parts, which is what we call an emulsifier! As you can see this single ingredient is quite crucial.

This way you will have a more pleasurable experience making your body butter and prevent any possible contamination of your finished product.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Creating a Double Boiler

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Creating a Double BoilerBefore you get into creating your lotion you will need to create a double boiler. Now, take your large pot and add water. You will need to add several inches. You will want enough water in the large pot to touch the bottom of the small pot. Begin heating the water on your stove top over medium heat. I should mention, you will want to make sure that you don’t have too much water in your large pot. If you have too much water in the pot, then you may have some water get into your oils. Make sure you keep an eye on the water level as you melt your oils and butters. Later, you will set the small pot into the large pot to melt your oils and butters.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Weighing Out Your Ingredients for Melting

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Weighing Out Your Ingredients for MeltingFirst, we are going to weigh out some of our ingredients. Take your scale and tare the weight of a medium-sized mixing bowl. You will need your Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Grapeseed Oil, and Apricot Kernel Oil. Weigh out and add 156 grams of the Cocoa Butter and 155 grams of the Shea Butter to your bowl. Next, weigh and add 24 grams of the Grapeseed Oil and 65 grams of the Apricot Kernel Oil to the same bowl. Set this mixture aside for now.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Melting Your Ingredients

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Melting Your IngredientsNext, you are going to melt the ingredients that you prepared in the previous step. You will need to use the double boiler you began creating earlier to melt your oils and butters.  Melting them in your double boiler will prevent scorching of the oils.  So, place your weighed out ingredients into your smaller pot.  Then, place the smaller pot into the larger pot.  Melt the mixture fully before moving to the next step.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Adding the Remaining Ingredients

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Adding the Remaining IngredientsNow, you are going to add your few remaining ingredients to the mixture. After your butters and oils are completely melted, pour the mixture back into your medium sized bowl. Then, you can add in your Vitamin E Oil and the Black Raspberry Fragrance Oil. So, tare the weight of the filled bowl on your scale. Next, add 4 grams of the Vitamin E Oil and 10 grams of the Black Raspberry Fragrance Oil to your bowl of melted butters and oils.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Cooling the Mixture

Then, you will be cooling your mixture to get it to thicken. There are two possibilities for you to do this step. The first option is that you could place the medium sized mixing bowl into a bowl full of ice. Alternatively, you could place the covered bowl into the fridge.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Whipping the Mixture

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Whipping the MixtureNext, you are going to whip your mixture into a body butter. After your mixture of oils and butters was cooled for 20 minutes you are going to remove it from the fridge, or ice and mix it. So, retrieve your cooled mixture and use the hand mixer for a few minutes. Then, place the bowl back in the fridge or the ice bath for 20 more minutes. Repeat these steps until your mixture looks white and as creamy as whipped butter. Also, this will take a few cooling and mixing cycles until this point is reached.

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Packaging Your Body Butter

Black Raspberry Vanilla Body Butter Kit Packaging Your Body ButterFinally, you can fill your jars with the finished body butter. Now, open your four jars to get ready. Take your metal spoon and start scooping the body butter into the jars. Be sure to pack the body butter in well and avoid the possible air bubbles. The finished black raspberry vanilla body butter will fill all four jars. Once you have filled your jars, place a lid on each one. Now, your finished products are ready to use!
