Candy Corn  Tarts candy corn tar

Our Candy Corn Tarts Recipe is inspired by that very popular Halloween treat that is loved by so many.  In fact, these tiny little pieces of sugary goodness are so cherished that they have their very own holiday.  It’s October 30th just for anyone that wants to celebrate with me.  With Natures Garden’s easy to follow candy corn tarts recipe you can fill your house with that same warm vanilla candy corn scent that you loved as a kid.  As an added bonus, we have packaged them in our easy to use clamshell containers.  That means no mold needed and instant packing!

Ingredients:

10 ½ oz. Pillar of Bliss Wax

1oz bottle of Orange Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye

1oz bottle of Yellow Spectrum Liquid Candle dye

3 tsp.  Candy Corn Fragrance Oil

Pouring Pot

3 Clamshell Containers

Stainless Steel Measuring Spoon

Measuring Cup

Stirring Spoon

3 Paper Bowls

Tooth Picks

Scale

Directions:

  1. Using a double boiler, weigh out and melt 10 ½ oz. of Pillar of Bliss Wax until it is completely melted.  You will need three empty clamshell containers ready.

  1. First you will want to prepare the orange layer.  Pour 1/3 of the melted Pillar of Bliss Wax into a paper bowl, then use a toothpick and dip it into the Orange Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye and mix it into the Pillar of Bliss Wax.  You will want to keep the remaining wax on the double boiler so that it does not solidify.

  1. Stir in 1 tsp. Candy Corn Fragrance Oil to the orange wax and fold your bowl into a spout to dispense the orange layer into the first 1/3 of each cavity of the three clamshell containers.  Allow this layer to setup before moving to step 4.

  1. Next, it is time to prepare the white layer.  Pour 1/3 of the Pillar of Bliss Wax from the stove into a paper bowl and stir in 1 tsp. Candy Corn Fragrance Oil.  Then, pour the white mixture into the next 1/3 of the empty space in the clamshell cavities

  1. Now, to prepare the yellow layer, pour the remaining wax into the last paper bowl.  Then, using a toothpick, add a small amount of Yellow Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye.  Then, add 1 tsp of Candy Corn Fragrance Oil to the yellow wax.  Pour this wax on top of the white layer.  Once the wax has setup, close the clamshell container.

  1. Your Candy Corn Clamshell Tarts are now ready.  You can simply place one square in your potpourri burner or wax burner and let the candy corn aroma fill the room!

apple pie scent Apple Pie Fragrance Oil (Our Old Version) - Fragrance Oil Spotlight

There is nothing like the scent of apple pie.  A true American classic, Apple Pie scent is the aroma of fresh crisp apple intermingled with warm and mouthwatering spices.  This delicious scent in products is a big seller too.  This apple pie scent is fantastic for lovers of food type fragrances, or anyone who just enjoys an all around good apple aroma.  According to our clientele this great dessert scent is addictive, and they find their clients always craving more.  This strong and delicious scent is a wonderful addition to any product line and makes for truly yummy and scrumptious smelling homemade products.

What does Apple Pie Smell Like?

This fragrance oil by Natures Garden is one that although we have had many apple scents to choose from, this apple pie has been with us since we started making candles.  This scent is not the same as our Hot Baked Apple Scent, as this one has more of a cinnamon “kick” to it.

How Do Our Customers Use Apple Pie Fragrance Oil?

For those of you that are candle crafters, this scent comes highly recommended!  A perfect apple pie scent for anyone looking to add bakery type scents to their line; Apple Pie Fragrance Oil smells just like apple pie fresh out of the oven.  Our customers use this apple pie scent in their soy, WOW, Pillar of Bliss, Joy, and paraffin waxes.  With an all around amazing scent throw, this fragrance is wonderful in both the hot and cold throw.  As for home scenting ideas to make your house smell good, this apple pie scent works phenomenally well in tart and oil burners, smelly jellies, liquid potpourris, sachet beads, room sprays, and reed diffusers.

For the bath and body crafters, this delicious apple pie scent is so realistic you can even smell the crust.  The usage rate for this fragrance is 1% in bath oils, soaps, and bath gels; and carries a .5% usage rate for lotions and perfumes.  Apple Pie Fragrance Oil also has a .5% vanillin content, so vanilla white color stabilizer is highly suggested to help stabilize discoloration in finished products.  This mouthwatering fragrance can be used to scent: body scrubs, body butters, perfumes, bath bombs, melt and pour soaps, salt bars, lotions, whipped body butters, and foaming hand soaps.  Finally, for those of you that are cold process soapers, this fragrance is great.  Here are the official testing results:  Very slight acceleration.  No separation.  Discolors to a tan color.  Yummy scent!

Happy Fathers Day

Happy Fathers Day from Natures GardenHappy Father’s Day

We at Natures Garden would like to extend a very Happy Fathers Day to all of the dads out there.  This is your day to celebrate.

“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.” – Bill Cosby

Officially being recognized as a national holiday in 1972 by President Nixon, Fathers Day is a celebration of male parenting.  It is a holiday to show all fathers our appreciation and gratitude.   It is a great day to shower our wonderful dads with all the love and admiration they so rightfully deserve.

Fathers are our protectors, our providers, and our mentors.  And, without them, we would not be here.

So, to all of you amazing dads; thank you for all that you do.  Thank you for being there to lean on when the times get rough.  Thank you for pushing us to be the best person we can be.  Thank you for supporting us and believing in our sometimes crazy and outlandish ventures.  Thank you for loving us unconditionally through the good, the bad, and the ugly years.  And, thank you for teaching us to be strong when facing uncertainties.  But, most of all; thank you for all of the sacrifices you made for us throughout the years.

So, enjoy your day Dads; sit back and relax.  Know that you are needed, loved, and appreciated!

My dad absolutely LOVES homemade cold process soap.  I will never forget the first time he tried some.  He said, “What you just came up with could be a gold mine!”  Well, I had to fill my dad in on two things:  1.  I did not create the concept of making soap from scratch, and 2. I plan to only sell the raw ingredients to make soap.  Since he had never tried real, homemade soap, he thought all soap was like the store bought soap.  For all of my life, he was a Zest kind of guy.  I am proud to report that my dad no longer uses store bought soap.  He says that “homemade soap is the best thing someone really smart ever created.”  I will have to agree!

So, if you would like to make your dad some wonderful, homemade soap from scratch, Natures Garden has all of the ingredients that you will need!   We offer fabulous soaping oils, butters, soap scents, essential oils, colorants, and soap lye.  Here is the recipe that is my dad’s favorite:  Shea Butter Cold Process Soap

HSCG 2014 Conference

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

HSCG 2014Last week, Cindy and I attended the HSCG 2014 Conference in Tucson, Arizona.  Spoiler alert… we had a blast!

At first, Cindy and I did not know what to expect.  This was our very first time attending an HSCG Conference.  We were nervous and excited at the same time.  It was going to be such a treat to meet our customers and other soapmakers and crafters.

Upon our arrival to the breath taking Loews Resort (where the conference was held) we quickly wanted to get our vendor booth set up and functional.  Since we brought a sample of each of the 816 fragrance oils that Natures Garden currently carries, we knew getting them unpacked and displayed was going to truly be a feat.

Walking into the conference area was inspiring, there was quite an array of other vendors also setting up and preparing for the conference.  Briskly walking past the displays, it was very easy to see that there was going to be something there for every attendee from fragrances to essential oils, unscented bases, educational books, supplies, and packaging; just to name a few.

Once we settled into our area, we quickly started to unpack and set up our displays.  People were already starting to register in the lobby and it was very easy to see everyone’s excitement for the conference to officially begin.  There was most definitely a contagious thrill mounting in the air.

hscg conferenceAs for the Natures Garden booth; we did bring a few other products for our booth, but the main focus was the fragrance samples.  We saw the HSCG Conference as a chance to let people smell fragrances that they always wondered about.  And boy, let me tell you the attendees were ecstatic over the scents.  It was very energizing to see the excitement as people sniffed away and asked questions.

It was very easy to see from the first night that this conference was going to be a huge success.  The charisma and vigor that all of the attendees, staff, vendors, and guild members had was inspiring.  Everyone was so very genuine and nice; not only to us, but amongst each other as well.  And, it was so very nice to see many of the experienced soap crafters giving advice, sharing tricks of the trade, and helping those that were either just starting out or thinking about extending their lines.

During the conference, the days were chucked full of educational classes, gourmet meals, meet and greet opportunities, and good times.  Every time a seminar let out, the vendors area would fill with attendees discussing everything they learned, the great experience they had, and the plethora of knowledge they attained.

All in all by the time that Friday morning hit (the last day), the conference was a buzz with all of the happiness of a well planned and informative week.  The Handcrafted Soapmakers and Cosmetics Guild had yet another successful conference year.  Everyone had a super fun time, learned a lot, and met such a variety of new and creative crafters.  All in all, attending the conference was so well worth it.

Next year the HSCG 2015 Conference will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana from April 18th – 20th.    Our suggestion for anyone that is on the fence about going is that attending this conference is highly recommended from these two first year conference attendees.  Not only will your days be filled with knowledgeable seminars and your evenings with fun get togethers, but you will meet some of the nicest and most helpful fellow crafters in the industry.

On a final note:  A special thank you goes out to all of the hard work that the members and staff of the Handcrafted Soapmakers and Cosmetics Guild did.  For us, this year’s conference was a huge success.  We met new people, had tons of fun, many laughs, and truly enjoyed our time at the conference.

Whipped Shaving Cream

Saturday, December 14th, 2013

whipped shaving soapIf you are looking for a great homemade whipped shaving cream recipe, Natures Garden has one for you!  With a wonderfully rich and creamy lather, this thick shaving cream will leave your skin feeling smooth and rejuvenated.  In fact, after you make this shaving recipe, you will love it so much that you may never buy the store bought version again.  Plus, since this recipe is a homemade one, you can scent your shaving cream to your liking.  Natures Garden has a wonderful selection of body safe fragrance oils both feminine and masculine, and even a few truly unique ones too.

This light and fluffy cream will give you a close shave every time, and you only need a very small amount of the shaving cream to accomplish this.  Because this homemade shaving cream contains the ingredient Bentonite Clay, it makes the shaving lather slicker, allowing the razor a slippery layer to provide a sleek, nick free shave.  But, the bentonite clay benefits do not stop there.

Bentonite Clay also helps to sweep away impurities on the skin.  It can add a silky, polished feel to a product.  But, for scenting purposes in a finished product, the best benefit of Bentonite Clay is the fact that this clay allows for an even dispersion of scent throughout the whole product; working as a fixative.

Rich and exotic Mango Butter is also another stellar ingredient in this recipe.  Mango Butter is a luxurious butter that melts on the skin allowing for great moisturizing and softening effects.  The addition of this ingredient in your body products is even believed to reduce wrinkle development.

These two powerhouse ingredients together along with a few other necessities produce a whipped shaving cream that is very easy to make, very easy to use, and is a fraction of the cost of store bought kind.

To view the complete whipped shaving cream recipe, you can simply click on this link.  If you are interested in other easy to make, homemade bath and body products, candles, or home scenting products, please visit Natures Garden’s website.  The projects and instructions are listed under the Free Recipes and Classes area, and can be scented in an array of various fragrance oils; so there is something for everyone!

Fragrance Oil and Candle Making

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

fragrance oilWhen it comes to candle making, in order to have the best smelling candles, you must use concentrated fragrance oil.  There are a vast number of fragrance oil companies in the market, many of them sell good quality oils for candle making, and on the other hand there are some companies that sell lower cost fragrances which are usually diluted.  Never use any fragrance oils that are alcohol based for candle making.  Caution- there are companies that sell “potpourri fragrance oils”, these fragrance oils are about 50% concentrated.  They are cut with a product called DPG.  DPG (or dipropylene glycol) is used to dilute fragrance oils.  Do not use these types of fragrance oils for candle making, they will inhibit your candles from burning properly.

Once you have found a company that sells concentrated fragrance oils, you will only want to use 1 ounce to 1.5 ounces of candle scent per pound of wax.  As long as you have selected the right kind of wax- a high quality one- you will never need to use more than 1.5 ounces of candle scent per pound of wax.  Using more than the stated amount of fragrance oil in your candle wax will result in unused fragrance in the bottom of your pouring pot or candle container.  This is wasted fragrance oil that was not absorbed by your wax.

Natures Garden supplies 100% concentrated fragrance oils to its customers.  These scents were formulated by master perfumists, using aromatic chemicals and essential oils to create wonderfully smelling fragrances that can be used to make candles.  In fact, about 99% of Natures Garden’s fragrance oils also work in other applications besides candles.  This includes:  cosmetics, bath and body products, and even cold process soap.  Natures Garden is dedicated to providing its customers with unique, fine, fragrance oils at wholesale prices not retail prices.  Our company is able to sell these high quality oils at great prices because we are the largest supplier of fragrance oils in the USA, which has allowed us to achieve bulk buying power from our perfumists.  And then, we pass the savings on to our customers.  Our high quality, affordable-priced fragrance oils allow our customers to maintain high profit margins on their finished products.

Chemistry of Fragrance

Essential oils are 100% natural (usually plant derived).  These scenting oils are commonly attained by a process known as steam distillation.  Essential oils are very costly as compared to fragrance oils.  Fragrance oils came into existence because of these high costs.  Perfumists started replicating the aroma of certain essential oils by mixing the right combinations of over 3,000 various aromatic chemicals.  These aromatic chemicals are known as aldehydes and ketones.  Aldehydes and ketones are all polar to some degree.  It is actually impossible for fragrance oils to be NON Polar.  Every fragrance oil has some degree of polarity to them.  Yes, it is true that some fragrance oils will be more polar than others, but a fragrance oil can never be completely NON Polar.  Perfumists are able to create a fragrance oil that is less polar by using isopar solvents, but once again, there will still be a small degree of polarity from the aromatic chemicals used to form the fragrance oil.

Fragrance oils that are used to scent gel wax have to be on the lesser side of being polar.  A great tip for testing if a fragrance oil will work in gel wax is to first check the flashpoint.  The flashpoint of the oil has to be above 170 degrees Fahrenheit.  Then, see if the fragrance oil will mix in mineral oil, if the solution becomes cloudy, the fragrance oil will not work.  If the solution is clear, the fragrance oil is gel wax compatible.

MSDS/IFRA/RIFM

We at Natures Garden want to keep you informed on every single fragrance oil we carry.  All of the fragrance oils sold by Natures Garden abide by the safety recommendations set forth by the IFRA and RIFM standards.  Natures Garden also supplies the MSDS information for each and every fragrance oil as well.  The MSDS and IFRA Certification of Compliance can be found on the website, under the fragrance performance- testing in various applications section.  Each MSDS and IFRA certificate can be easily printed right off the Natures Garden website.  EU customers are now provided EU allergen reports for all of our fragrances.
