Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: A Closer Look at the Ingredients

Before we begin creating our chocolate body butter, let’s look at the ingredients.  Below is a closer look at each butter and oil used to create this recipe.  We will also talk about additional items we will be adding to make the “chocolate” part of our body butter.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Mango Butter

Mango butter is an exotic, luxury oil, which melts on the skin; providing skin softening and moisturizing qualities.  Mango butter is obtained from the kernels of the mango tree.  Mango butter is used in lip balms, lip gloss, soaps, lotions, scrubs, and many other bath and body recipes. It is said to reduce the signs of aging by reducing wrinkle formation.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Cocoa Butter Golden Natural

This particular cocoa butter is not deodorized; meaning that it has a chocolate-like aroma.  Cocoa butter is a very hard, saturated fat. It is considered a luxury butter that is used in lotions, lip balms, lip gloss, scrubs, massage bars, soaps, and other bath and body products.   It is used in conjunction with unsaturated oils like olive oil or castor oil, or with more sticky ingredients such as shea butter and lanolin when making soap.  Using too much cocoa butter in soap will result in a dry, exceptionally hard bar of soap.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil contains only the medium-chain triglycerides of coconut oil, making it a liquid at relatively low temperatures.  It is a very stable oil.  Fractionated coconut oil has an indefinite shelf life and is a light, non-staining,  non-greasy, colorless oil. It is great for use in massage, toiletries and soap. Natures Garden’s fractionated coconut oil is a great carrier oil for essential oils. In addition, fractionated coconut oil can be used in lotions, lip applications, cosmetics, creams, bath oils, massage oils, bath salts, and soap. Fractionated coconut oil can easily substitute sweet almond oil in recipes.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Meadowfoam Seed Oil readily sinks into the skin; not leaving the skin feeling oily.  Meadowfoam Seed Oil helps to repair dry, damaged skin. Due to its high levels of natural antioxidants, meadowfoam oil has a long shelf life and is not prone to rancidity.  Meadowfoam oil is also known for its UV light protection properties, making it a fabulous oil to include in your skincare formulations.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Natural Vitamin E Oil

(Tocopherol T-50)-  The purest form of natural vitamin E available (from plant sources only). This is not tocopherol acetate, the form found in many vitamin E capsules.  Vitamin E is required in most cosmetic formulations in very small amounts  in order to prevent oils from oxidizing.  When fixed oils oxidize, they develop a very rancid smell, and can turn your products brown in color, which will ruin your finished products.  Prevent this from occurring by adding vitamin E to your formulations.  Our vitamin E oil is also heat stable, and is added during the oil phase of your recipes.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Organic Cocoa Powder

Organic cocoa powder is a fabulous addition to your cosmetics and soap recipes.  Cacao beans are rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and pantothenic acid.  They are also rich in the following minerals:  magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese and potassium.  Cocao beans contain caffeine, which is actually beneficial to the skin.  How does chocolate lip balm sound to you?  Chocolate facial masks?  Yummy!

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Arrowroot Powder

Arrowroot powder is a white, silky powder that is found in most natural body powder recipes and deodorants.  It will give your recipes a silky finish.  Arrowroot is used in cosmetics as a thickener.  Unlike most thickeners, arrowroot has the ability to thicken at room temperature, and at varying ph levels.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Kickin Cocoa Fragrance Oil

Kickin Cocoa fragrance oil by Natures Garden is Gourmet Hot Chocolate with a fancy twist!  Kickin Cocoa scent begins with a top note of rum; middle notes of whipped cream, coconut, and creamy caramel; and base notes of cocoa, coffee, vanilla, and chocolate.  An NG Original Fragrance!

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: The Difference Between A Body Butter, a Cream, and a Lotion

We receive numerous phone call and emails regarding body butters.  However, most often, the question is what is the difference between a body butter and a cream.  So, let’s talk about those differences.

First, let’s look at a body butter.  A true body butter does not typically contain water.  You may also notice that it will often be both thicker and harder.  This is due to the fact that it does not contain water.  While it may feel hard to the touch, you will also notice that your natural body heat will quickly melt the butter.  This is what a body butter is meant to do.

Next, let’s talk about a body cream.  A body cream is similar to a body butter.  However, it isn’t quite the same.  A body cream will contain water.  So, essentially, it is a very thick lotion.  It will not contain as much water as lotion.  Since it contains water, you will need an emulsifier to create.

Finally, we will briefly talk about lotions.  Lotions are similar to creams.  Generally speaking, they contain more water when compared to a cream.  They will not be as heavy as a cream so it will typically absorb into your skin more quickly than a cream.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Total Recipe Weights

78 grams Mango Butter
156 grams Cocoa Butter
102 grams Fractionated Coconut Oil
65 grams Meadowfoam Seed Oil
10 grams Kickin Cocoa Fragrance Oil
10 grams Arrowroot Powder
5 grams Vitamin E Oil
5 grams Organic Cocoa Powder

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe: Prepare Your Oils

We will begin by preparing our oils for our chocolate body butter recipe.  You will need to weigh out 78 grams Mango Butter, 156 grams Cocoa Butter, 102 grams Fractionated Coconut Oil, and 65 grams Meadowfoam Seed Oil.

Now, you will need to create a double boiler.  So, in a large pot, add a few inches of water.  Place your pot over medium heat on your stove top.  Then, in a smaller pot, add your weighed out oils and butters.  Place your smaller pot inside the larger pot on your stove.  Allow your oils and butters to melt slowly.  You will need to stir them occasionally so that they melt evenly and completely.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Adding the Remaining Ingredients

Next, remove the melted butters and oils from the heat.  Then, we will be adding the remaining ingredients.  So, first pour your melted oils and butters into a clean empty bowl.  Then, add 10 grams Arrowroot Powder, 5 grams Vitamin E Oil, and 5 grams Organic Cocoa Powder.  Also, add 10 grams of Natures Garden’s Kickin Cocoa Fragrance Oil.  Finally, stir the ingredients until they are fully blended.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Cooling the Body Butter

The last step before adding the body butter to the jars.  You simply need to allow your body butter to cool.  This can be done one of two ways.  You can either place the bowl in the fridge or you can place your bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice.  However, as the mixture is cooling, you will want to use a hand mixer to mix the ingredients.  This should be done about every 20 minutes.  You will want to continue to do this until your mixture is no longer fluid.

Chocolate Body Butter Recipe:  Placing the Body Butter in the Jars

Lastly, we will begin placing the body butter in the jars.  You will simply need to scoop the body butter into 4 ounce jars.  Our chocolate body butter recipe will fill a total of 4 jars.  Once you have filled the jars, you can place a white dome lid on top.

If you’re anything like me, after reading this, you will definitely be ready to indulge in a delicious chocolate treat.  So, why not give this chocolate mousse recipe a try.  I found this fabulous chocolaty  treat on Creations by Kara.  It’s a simple three ingredient recipe.  This recipe will be ready in no time!

Heart Soap

This entry was posted in bath and body, bath products, creative, fragrance oil, Fragrance Oils, fun projects, homemade, melt and pour soap, Natures Garden, Soap making supplies, soap recipe, Valentines Day, Valentines Day Craft and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

heart melt and pour soapThis Valentines Day lets celebrate the ones we love by making them homemade heart soap.

This heart soap project uses almost 4 pounds of melt and pour soap.  Although for this recipe, we suggest using Shea butter soap, any white soap base will work.  To view the multiple melt and pour soap bases Natures Garden carries, please click on this link.  Please Note:  You will also need a very small amount of diamond clear soap base.  This will be used to help keep the heart soap in place once it is folded.

The fragrance that we selected for the heart soap was Lick Me All Over.  Really any one of your favorite body safe fragrance oils from Natures Garden will work to scent this homemade project; just keep the vanillin content in mind.  If you choose to use a scent that does contain vanillin, you may want to consider using Vanilla White Color Stabilizer to reduce discoloration in your finished heart soap.  For the heart soap you will need to have at least 4 ounces of fragrance.  To see a list of other Valentines Day themed scents, please click on this link.

When it comes to color for the heart soap, we selected Tomato Red Fun Soap Colorant.  In order to achieve a nice, bold red you will need to use about one ounce of colorant.

Other ingredients that you will need for the heart soap project are:  Vegetable Glycerin and Whipped Soap Base.

The following molds were also used:  Love Heart Embed Mold and Square Loaf- Mold Market Molds

Before starting this project you will also need the following items:  Scale, Cutting Board, Knife, 9 x 13 Cake Pan, Wax Paper, Ruler, Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, Microwave Safe Glass Containers, Spatula, Mixing Spoons, Mixing Bowl, a hand held mixer, and 2 disposable cups.

Now that you have everything that you need, let’s get project heart soap underway!

Step 1:  Measure out 8.5 inches in length on your cake pan.  You will want to mark this point by placing your loaf mold there.  Next, tear off a piece of wax paper long enough to cover this area.  Lay the wax paper down and tuck it loosely into the corners.

Step 2:  In your microwaveable container, weigh out  500 grams of Shea Butter Soap.  Place this in the microwave and start melting it in 30 seconds increments. Stir gently in between.  Stop melting once the soap is in a liquid state.

Step 3:  Next, add 20 grams FUN Tomato Red Soap colorant, 14 grams vegetable glycerin, and 26 grams fragrance oil to the melted soap.  Stir well.  Now, pour all of the soap into the wax paper. Spritz with alcohol and allow this to fully set up.

Step 4:  Once the red soap has set up, weigh out 20 grams of Diamond Clear soap.  Melt this for 30 seconds in the microwave or until it is in a liquid state.  Then, set it aside.

Step 5:
In a large microwaveable bowl, weigh out and melt  1200 grams of Shea Butter Soap. Stir gently in between each round of melting. Keep melting until all soap is in a liquid state.  This will take some time.

Step 6:  Now, get the red soap and carefully remove the wax paper.  With one of the shorter edges facing you, lay the soap onto a cutting board.

Step 7:  Next, grab the loaf mold and mark it’s length using a knife.  Cut off excess soap and place it in a separate bowl.

Step 8:  Now, fold your red soap in half (long ways).  Using your fingers, gently curl the edges to meet.

Step 9:  Once you have a heart shape, slide one edge firmly into a disposable cup.  Repeat for the other side.  Now, pour some of the melted diamond clear soap down the center of the fold.  Don’t forget to move the soap so that the melted soap is able to reach under the cup portion too.  Then, set aside.

folding heart soap

Step 10:  Now that all of the white soap is in a liquid state, add 60 grams of fragrance Oil.  Mix well and set aside.  Next, get the loaf mold.  Remove the cups from the heart soap and gently place the heart upside down in the loaf mold.  Spritz generously with alcohol.

Step 11:  Using a spatula, carefully pour the white soap into the loaf.  Do not pour the soap onto the red heart directly.  Make sure to pour soap along the width edges to completely fill the inside opening of the heart.   Once the mold is filled, spritz with alcohol to reduce any bubbles.

Step 12:  Allow your soap to fully set up at room temperature, or to speed things up place your soap loaf in the refrigerator.  When the soap is completely set up, take it out of the mold and make sure you turn it back to right side up.  Set aside.

Step 13:   Now, take the bowl that has the scrap red soap.  Place it in the microwave, and remelt.  Next, pour the soap into the love hearts embed mold.  Allow this to fully set up, then pop them out.

Step 14:  Soap Frosting Steps:  Once the soap loaf is completely set up (which will take some time), weigh out 114 grams of Whipped Soap Base and 14 grams of vegetable glycerin.  Place both of these ingredients into a mixing bowl.  Set aside.

Step 15:  Now, weigh out 114 grams of Shea Butter soap.  Melt all of the soap down in the microwave, then pour it into the mixing bowl with the two other ingredients.

Step 16:  Using your hand held mixer, start to whip the ingredients together.  As you mix, watch for the ingredients to look like whipped frosting.  Stop mixing.

Step 17:  Now working quickly, add 12 grams of fragrance oil and 2 drops Tomato Red Fun Soap Colorant to the mixing bowl.  Clean the sides of the bowl with a spatula. Then, start whipping the mixture. Make sure the mixture is well blended.  When the mixture begins to look like pink whipped frosting again, stop beating.

Step 18:  Using your spatula place the soap frosting evenly onto the loaf.  Now, place the love heart embeds into the soap frosting.  Allow this to set up.

Love Day Baskets

Cupid is Coming…

As we all know Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. It is a day meant to be filled with love and appreciation for one another. Typically, this is considered a lovers holiday. This very special day is filled with flowers, chocolates, cards, and romantic evenings. So, since we are all business minded, it goes without saying that we are all super busy making our loved themed products in preparation for this big occasion.

This is our time to shine.

No one knows the female market better than we do.  We also know that many men shop for this day last minute with little to no thought behind their purchases.  So, let’s take these two factors, and solve the problem.

What do women want?  This question has plagued man since the beginning of time.  We are such wonderfully complex beings; it is hard for men to understand.   I know that I do not have to elaborate on this topic.  To make a quick generalization, we want everything and nothing at the same time.  It is this very tangled web that men cannot grasp.  But hey, there is nothing sexier than a little mystery.  Women know this.

So, how do we correlate this into a suitable gift?  Well, as they say, “You can lead a horse to water…”

If you have read any of my earlier posts, you know that I am a huge homemade gift basket advocator.  If you haven’t, you do now.  I’ve done a little research and coupled that with some out of the box thinking to come up with some unique ideas for Valentine’s Day gifts.  My main objective when compiling this list was to take the uncertainty out of present purchasing for men, while still satisfying the wants of women.

Unique Valentine’s Day Gifts:

Now he can have everything he needs to show her he cares, with very little thinking involved!

  1. A “Snuggle and Cuddle Basket” containing a handmade fleece tie blanket, romantic movie, microwave popcorn, and candles or tea lights scented with Endlessly in Love fragrance.  Perfect for a night in together.
  2. A “Dinner is on Me Basket” containing all of the items and ingredients to make a delicious meal.  Along with these items, include two pillar candles scented with Aphrodisiac to set the mood.  Now, he can cook like a pro.  A little FYI for everyone:  According to my research, the most loved and appreciated gift that men did for women on Valentine’s Day last year was cook them a dinner for a romantic evening in.  By selling a basket with all of the items that a man would need to make dinner, not only are you providing a one stop shop, but you are also preventing them from having to go to no man’s land… aka the supermarket.
  3. A “Bath time Butler Basket” containing soap, Ritzy bath gel, and soap dipped rose petals all scented in Magic Potion.  Don’t forget to add the sponge, or loofah.  Everything he needs to give her a relaxing bubble bath.
  4.  An “Undying Love Vase” filled with aroma buds scented with NG Beautiful Type.  Unlike the 200 million stems of roses that will be sold near Valentine’s Day, her roses won’t be expiring any time soon.
  5. A “Capture our Love Basket” including a disposable camera, 3 x 5 photo album, love stickers, and red and black sharpie markers.  This way, whatever way they choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, he can give her the memories to keep forever.

These are some really great basket ideas for increasing your sales as we approach the anticipated Love Day.

Remember…Love can mean many different things to many different people.  As always, there are various factors that feed into this equation too.  The most important thing to remember is feeling special and loved on Valentine’s Day is great, but feeling special and loved the other 364 days of the year is one gift that is in everybody’s price range and doesn’t need a gift receipt.

Fragrance & Fun for Everyone

Inspire, Create, and Dominate!

Sparkles!!! Nicole

Natures Garden’s Aqua di Gio Type fragrance oil:  After testing numerous lower cost versions of this scent, and not being satisfied, we told our perfumist to work his magic with this scent; we would pay whatever we had to pay for this sexy duplication.  Mike and my sons all wear this scent; so my house is filled with this aroma daily.  I am happy to say that our perfumist deserves a standing ovation on his work!  If you have not had the pleasure of smelling this unbelievable scent, it is described as such:  A sexy, fresh, aquatic aroma with bergamot, neroli, and tangerine; flowing into mid notes of rosemary, jasmine, and persimmon; all sitting on a woodsy base note of essential oil of patchouli.

Natures Garden Pheromones Fragrance Oil-   A classic hot man fragrance; masculine, sexy, and irresistible. Clean and inviting citrus notes of bergamot and grapefruit, open up to a sensual bouquet of white floral and woody violet, grounded by the deeply sensual scent of oakmoss and sandalwood.

Natures Garden’s Purple Hooters Fragrance Oil:  This fragrance is a wonderful blend of sparkling strawberries, raspberries, citrus greenery, and soft florals.

Natures Garden Sinfully Hot Fragrance Oil: An NG Original Fragrance!  This potent spicy bouquet comes from the dried branches & twigs of the cassia tree. A strong cinnamon bark blend is followed by warm wood and sweet amber to create the ultimate spice scent.

NG Original Scent!  Natures Garden Toxic Trance Fragrance Oil-  When we asked our perfumist to create some new Halloween/Gothic scents for us, he created a sexy scent that he referred to as “Intoxicating Edward”.  We love the Twilight series, and we were simply amazed at how well the perfumist captured the charming charisma of Edward in this fragrance;  his alluring eyes, his flawless, metrosexual appearance, and even the way he glistened like gold when we was in the sun.  However, we chose to give this fragrance a name that lasted beyond the Twilight phenomena; thus we renamed this fragrance “Toxic Trance”.  Natures Garden’s Toxic Trance fragrance is a unisex, incredibly sexy fragrance which begins with top notes of green citrus notes, mellowed out with powdery floral notes that appear to glisten.  The middle of the fragrance involves the infusion of neroli, violet, and herbs, with a bottom of powdery floral musk.

An NG Original Fragrance!  Natures Garden Vanilla Valentine Fragrance Oil:  This sweetheart fragrance is a perfect blend of creamed vanilla bean and sensual musk to stimulate the senses and arouse your passion for sweetness.
