Homemade Soap No More Allergies

I am Victoria Cangelosi, and I’m the owner and SoapMaster-in-Chief of Smelly Cat Soaps.
I am allergic to soap – or so I thought for the first twenty-something years of my life. I would break out in a terrible rash each time I used soap, even the hypoallergenic stuff. I subsisted on exactly one brand of rather boring body wash I found that didn’t cause breakouts like the others.

But each time I entered shops like Lush or Bath and Body Works, I found myself entranced by all the delicious smells. It was a cruel, cruel existence.

One day, I came across a soap mold for sale online that I fell in love with. I was so inspired that I decided I was going buy it and try my hand at making soap. How hard could it be?

At first, my only goal was to create soap that I could use without getting a rash. Much to my delight, I quickly found success. It turns out I am not allergic to soap after all! What I’m allergic to is the preservative that soap companies add to their soaps to prolong their shelf lives.

I shared my newfound love for soapmaking with my family and friends, and showed them what I had made. Several high pitched Ohmygoshes and Thatsadorables later, I realized I may be onto something. I already had one shop on Etsy; I make jewelry and sell it over at www.CrowCanyonJewelry.com. I opened a second shop just for selling the soap, and decided to take custom orders instead of pre-making soap and listing it for sale. It seemed less risky; I didn’t have to buy supplies or make anything until I received an order. And I don’t add any preservatives to my soap.

The name Smelly Cat Soaps is homage to one of my all time favorite television shows, “Friends.” I love when I am selling soap at craft shows and people read my shop name, smile, then start to sing the Smelly Cat song a la Phoebe Buffay. I also love to hear the squeals of excited children as they proudly yell the names of all the little soap animals I have out on my table. “Mommy look, it’s a hedgehog! Mommy Mommy, an elephant! Mommy, she has turtles and puppies” etc.

I am enjoying this business and I love being my own boss. I get to be as creative as I want, and that is AWESOME! I don’t have to answer to anyone but my customers, so if I want to get crazy silly and fun in my automatic “Thanks for your order” message, (hint – it is actually pretty hilarious) there’s no one to tell me I can’t!

Right now, this is just a small business I do on the side. But I believe my soap has the potential to really take off. I love helping customers make bath time fun for their kids, create the perfect gift, or order truly unique wedding or shower favors. Please keep me in mind for all your future soaping needs.

From Cake Decorating to Soap Making

1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  Michelle L. Daniel  of Tea Time Creations, LLC.

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I have always been interested in aromatherapy.  My nightly ritual involved relaxing in a hot bath with my own special blend of essential oils.  Since I have always been drawn to scented bath products, I wondered if I could make a soap with my special recipe of essential oils that I loved so much.  I began researching soapmaking and decided to give it a try.  I was addicted.

After experimenting with several different recipes, I wondered if I could incorporate my cake decorating skills into soapmaking.  A friend who had seen my work suggested I take my soaps to a holiday craft event.  One thing lead to another, and Tea Time Creations, LLC was formed the beginning of 2012.  I haven’t given up my career as a court reporter, but I hope to someday make Tea Time Creations, LLC a successful business.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  I make custom designed soap into cakes and cupcakes.  I also make three-tier cake stands to display my soap out of vintage china.

4.  What are your business goals?  I truly hope to someday make Tea Time Creations, LLC a successful business.  Ultimately, I hope to do custom designs for weddings, showers, parties, etc.  I really enjoy coming up with new designs and challenging myself to create unique pieces.  I have always been drawn to the unique, and want to create a product which will memorialize a life event — that bride on her special day, a mother to be, or a child’s first birthday.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden?  Being a new, start-up business, I have had the need and opportunity to order several products from several different companies.  I find Natures Gardens fragrance oils to be the best.  When a company is formed with the purpose of satisfying the sense of smell, the scents chosen are the most important ingredient, and Natures Garden wins hands down.

How to Hire Quality Employees

If unemployment is so high, why is it so difficult for some small businesses to find good employees? Finding great employees is just like finding great customers. You need a staffing plan just like you need a marketing plan.

A successful staffing plan consists of 5 steps.

1.  Recruit constantly

2.  Interview efficiently

3.  Reference check thoroughly

4.  Offer quickly

5.  If you make a hiring mistake, (and even the most experienced and skilled interviewers occasionally get fooled) correct it immediately.

When employers find themselves in crisis hiring mode, they have a tendency to hire quickly and fire slowly. I like the opposite approach. Hire slowly and fire quickly.

Recruit constantly.

Build a recruiting database. If you approach recruiting the same way you market your business to attract new customers, 24/7, you’ll find the whole process less stressful and much less costly.

If you recruit only when you have an opening, you won’t get the best people because the pressure to hire quickly causes you to be less selective and sometimes even results in a bad hiring decision. You want the luxury of being able to be picky. It’s also the most cost-effective method. If you are constantly build your recruiting database you may only need to place a phone call to fill an opening.

  • Consider calling people who used to work for you who left on good terms. Returning to a former employer is a real trend and it’s happening in all industries. The trend is appropriately dubbed “boomeranging.” These people can hit the ground running! All you have to do is call and ask. Even if they say no, you can then ask if they know of anyone else who might be interested and would be a good fit.
  • Ask your current employees. Research shows that employee-referred candidates are three times more likely to be a good match for the job.
  • Ask your customers. An often neglected source of candidates is your customers. They already like your product, your store, your location, and the people you have working for you!
  • Your current applicants. The reference checking process is also an opportunity to add to your recruiting database

Interview efficiently means taking the time.

Finding someone you like and your team likes can take a long time. If you have a pool of applicants from your database, don’t rush it. And don’t hesitate to involve your star performers in the process as a means of rewarding performance and modeling successful behavior. Just make sure you properly train and monitor them in effective and legal interviewing.

I prefer behavior based interviewing; Asking questions that target previous behaviors. For instance;

“Tell me about a day when you had to complete a certain project by a deadline but on that particular day, someone called in sick and you knew you couldn’t complete it on time by yourself.”

Then follow-up with questions to elicit specifics;

“How did you handle it? What did you do? What was the result at the end of the day?”

Past behavior is a great predictor of future behavior. But behavioral questions are only effective when they prompt a response that reveals the truth about both weaknesses and strengths. It’s important when developing questions that you don’t word them in a way that makes them a leading question.

For example:

“Tell me about a conflict with a co-worker and how you resolved it.”

The latter part is the leading part. With this question, you’ve just signaled that you don’t want to hear about any times that they did NOT resolve the conflict with a coworker.

A better way to ask the question would be:

“Tell me about a conflict you had with a co-worker that stands out in your mind.”

Then ask the follow-up questions without leading toward a positive or negative result.

“How did you handle it? What did you do? What was the result at the end of the day?”

In the world of job applicants, there are problem bringers and there are problem solvers. You want to be able to identify which you’d be getting if you hired this person.

You’ll want to develop these open-ended questions to signal whether or not the applicant has the mental and physical abilities required to do the job, the dispositions such as dependability, initiative, and customer service, The personality temperament and traits such as competitiveness, assertiveness, and sociability that will fit in your company and of course the basic skills required to do the job.

Once you get the applicant describing a past situation, the key for you is to listen, and not leading the discussion. Don’t worry about pauses. Listen to what’s not said, as well as what’s said. Listen to tone..

One of my favorites; instead of asking;

“Why did you leave?”

Try this:

“Tell me about your last day on the job, from the moment you arrived, until you finished the day, describe what happened…”

Reference check thoroughly

It’s important to invest time in checking references. Some small business owners think it’s a waste of time to check references because so many employers have adopted a “limited information” policy; dates of employment, job title, ending wage or salary.

A word about liabilities: As an employer you may expose your business to defamation suits if you provide a negative reference for unlawfully discriminatory reasons; in retaliation for the former employee complaining of an illegal activity; or if you give a defamatory reference or disclose confidential facts that constitute an invasion of privacy. Keep in mind though that a blanket policy of simply giving “name, rank and serial number” of former employees can be an even more dangerous practice. This is especially true when an employer is aware of a former employee’s tendency toward, or history of, violence or sexual misconduct. Former employers can be sued for negligent misrepresentation or negligent referral if the employee is involved in some incident at the new workplace that might have been predicted based on prior behavior.

Not only is it critical to protect your business from claims of negligent hiring by careful reference checking and documenting your due diligence, I often find reference phone calls as useful as the interview itself. Contrary to the myth that prospective employers can only ask very targeted and limited questions, you can ASK anything as long as it’s not about protected classes, like race, religion, disabilities, etc.

As with all other aspects of employment law, it’s important to know your state laws. Some states have laws that may require employers to provide letters concerning past employment services (“service letters”) to former employees upon their request.

The goals of a reference call is to

  1. Confirm the information the applicant listed on the application is accurate
  2. Uncover information you won’t get in the interview.
  3. Add to my recruiting database.

Because I’m a firm believer in past behavior being a great predictor of future behavior, I make it a policy to require a minimum of three references from every applicant who I consider making an offer to. One must be a former direct supervisor and the others former co-workers. I explain my policy to the applicant and then I put the burden on them for the successful outcome of the reference checking process. This minimizes phone tag. It’s also is a good way to confirm the applicant is truly interested in the job. Once I have the name and telephone numbers, I ask him or her to get in touch with the references ahead of time and inform them that I’ll be calling, and that it would be ok to talk to me.

While I still may only get limited information from the supervisor, the co-workers usually give better insight and more substantial answers. I describe the open position to them, the skills and personality traits required and ask if they think it’s a good fit for the applicant. They tend to be more candid.

Assuming that the applicant is not currently employed with them, the last question I ask all three references is to describe the applicants last day. Asking the question this way can confirm or discredit the reason the applicant gave you during the interview for leaving the job.

If the reference doesn’t think the applicant is a good match, I ask who they know that would be, and who might be interested. If I detect desirable qualities and abilities in the person I’m getting the reference from, I add him or her to my recruiting database.

Offer Quickly

Good applicants that want to work won’t last long. On average they probably have applied at two other places during the period they interviewed with you. Don’t let too much time pass between the interview, reference checks and the offer.

Correct Problems Immediately

If you make a hiring mistake, (and even the most experienced and skilled interviewers occasionally get fooled) correct it immediately. Employees can be a huge cost for your business and can become an even bigger cost if they don’t fit. If it’s not working out, and you have given the person a fair chance and offered reasonable support then you should terminate the employment relationship BEFORE probationary period expires.

You will get much more out of investing time on the hiring side of the equation than investing time trying to change someone.

Passion for Soap Making

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  My now 23 month old daughter was diagnosed with Autoimmune Neutropenia requiring me to quit my nursing job and stay home full-time, so I took my passionate hobby turned into business to help supplement my husbands income & help pay on her medical bills.  We homeschool our older child, so God has His perfect timing. What was your motivation?  My children. How long have you been in business? A year.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  Handcrafted soaps, lotions and bath treats.

4.  What are your business goals?  Short term is to keep growing and long term is to eventually be able to have a studio to teach soapmaking classes as well as making bath & body products.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden?  About 90% of my fragrance oils are from Natures Garden, I absolutely love them!  The Vanilla Stabilizer is the best I have ever used.  The emulsifying wax, stearic acid and btms are also great products.  I also really like the Fractionated Coconut Oil.  I could go on & on!

Soap Making is My Addiction

1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  My name is Autumn Burgess and my business name is Skin Sweets & Body Treats.

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business? When I first started my business I started with making jewelry.  From there I started to add bath and body items, starting with lip balms and sugar scrubs.  My motivation for starting these projects was because I wanted to make my own items in order to save some money!  I started out selling my items in 2010.  Just this year though have I really gotten into the cold process method of soaping making and this has been a total addiction.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  I make lotions, lip balms, sugar scrubs, body perfumes, soap, soap and more soap!

4.  What are your business goals?  Right now I am an online retailer as well as person to person sales (craft fairs).  I suppose it’s every soapmaker’s dream to have a store front, and yes that would be totally awesome, but right now I like my balance of having a day job and then having that creative outlet which is soapmaking.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  Just this year have I discovered Natures Garden and now it is my go to for fragrance oils!  Love the amazing selection; I will spend countless hours looking through fragrances and still don’t feel like I’ve even scratched the surface with all NG offers.  My next purchase will be some essential oils as I’m trying to expand my comfort zone.  I also love the recipes that NG provides.

Handmade Soaps

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I really decided to go into business after friends told me I needed to sell my soaps. I love to make soap, and I was starting to rack up quite a collection. I thought selling might be one way to move some of the soap out of my house so I could make more.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  I make soap and dabble in sugar scrubs and body butters, but I haven’t sold any of my body butters yet.

4.  What are your business goals?  Eventually, I would love to be a resource for people who want to learn more about handmade soap and to use quality handmade soap. After I started using handmade, I never went back. I think we owe it to our skin to take care of it. It’s the largest organ in our body. Soap is also an affordable luxury. It is a small thing you can do to feel good about yourself, and I want to help others find their way to handmade soaps because their skin deserves it.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  I use a lot of your fragrance oils, which I find are high quality and smell great, but also a great value. I don’t think it’s possible for me to pick a favorite. I also love your sweet almond oil and avocado oil. I have found Nature’s Garden to have great value for these products. I have also ordered French green clay, which I used in my Marseille-style soap called Provence, a great facial soap. I use something from Nature’s Garden in everything I make! Barely a week goes by that we don’t receive a package from Nature’s Garden at my house. My husband jokes that the UPS man knows him and waves at him when they see each other out on the street (which is true!).

Soap Company Interview

Plott Hollow Farm Interview

Hi, the name of my company is Plott Hollow Farm, named after our 3 faithful Plott Hounds that patrol and protect our stock at night, and who are a never ending source of entertainment and sometimes aggravation.

When we bought our farm our goal was to preserve rare and endangered livestock and poultry. We also wanted a few pet goats. We got Nigerian Dwarf, which are also excellent milkers. I needed an outlet for all the milk so I started experimenting with soap. Then I found the soap guild and started to learn all kinds of wonderful things I could do with soap. I have been at it about a year now and I absolutely love it. I would rather make soap than do anything else. So that is how my soap company, Farm Girl Soap came about. Since I am a farm girl again, (I grew up on a farm) it seem like a good name for the soap. I also run a grooming shop from the farm, but I love the soap and all the soapers. I have never met a soaper yet who was not willing to share information and help in anyway they could, and, I love that about this industry. Everyone is so helpful.

I love the videos and recipes that Natures Garden post and I also love that they post all their test videos on youtube and list the results on their product descriptions. Once again just another example of how helpful a soaper are. Since I hooked up with all the facebook soaps I feel like I have an extended family. If I ever have a question I can get the answer in minutes just by posting it. I do have to admit, I love making soap much more than I like selling it! Selling my soaps and other products has enable us to move our farm forward with our goals. We now have 5 different breeds of chickens with are listed as critically endangered and one breed that is listed as threatened with the American Livestock Conservatory.

We also have just purchase a breeding pair critically endangered French Poitou Donkeys, it is believed that there are less than 400 of these donkeys world wide. Our female is expecting in June. So we are super excited about them. As I move into the new year I hope to see my soap business flourish and develop a larger regular clientele base. I have a plan to have a really nice covered wagon that I hitch my male donkey to and drive to local farmers markets and have the inside of the wagon set up so people can step inside to shop for soap and other bath goodies, of course Mr. donkey will get a lot of publicity and carrots! We love our goats and I love making the soap but it would be super cool to incorporate the donkeys into the soap biz as well. Plus it will give people, especially children a chance to interact with animals they probably would never see other wise and it gives a not of nostalgia to the soap buying process. What’s your name & Your Company Name (Why Did you choose that name?):

Susan Pagon,  Frog Garden Crafts, I love and collect Frog stuff so I wanted “Frog” in the name.  I went through a lot of name ideas and everyone liked the “Frog Garden” one.

How did you get into this business?:

I went to massage school, and took the Spa option with my courses and they had an “Aromatherapy” course as a part of it.  I loved it!!  We made lotions, salt scrubs, and all kinds of cool body stuff.  I learned the Therapeutic properties of Essential Oils and really enjoyed making my own blends.  I eventually branched out into soaps and Fragrance Oils, and eventually my friends and family told me I should open an Etsy store.  Now I’m having fun making Bath, Body, & Home products for sale.

What is your favorite part of this business?:

The feedback I get from people who really enjoy my products.  I also love the artistic side of designing different soaps, and I love all the different fragrances to work with out there.  Never ending possibilities.

What’s the most difficult part?

Being able to dedicate enough time to the craft with kids, school, and home life.

What’s your favorite product or aspect of Natures Garden?
The fragrances are so unique and they have an excellent variety to choose from.  I have several NG scents that I couldn’t live without!!  I also love the monthly scent sale.

What are your goals for the coming year for your business?

Of course everyone’s goal is to make a living doing what they love, so I guess my goal would be to reach that level in my business.

Soap Company Success Story

Bonnie Garrity from Good Earth Spa

My name is Bonnie Garrity and my soap company is called Good Earth Spa because I love using natural and organic ingredients from our earth. I also believe in doing good. My soap company donates one bar of soap to charity for each retail bar sold. I specifically chose the word spa because it perfectly describes the type of work that I do. I work with natural botanicals, skin foods, exotic butters and other awesome good earth ingredients to pamper and nourish the skin. Your bath tub should feel like a spa treatment every day because you deserve it.

I’ve always been a crafty girl. When I was a child I met a soap maker. I thought what she did was amazing. I couldn’t believe she made her own soap! Fast forward a few years, I was in the workplace and discovered I was expecting twins. Due to complications with my pregnancy I decided to leave the work world and stay home. I began making candles in my small apartment for
supplemental income. Then it progressed to soap and other bath items. I really wanted to be able to stay home with my children so I put all my focus on my home business. I became an ebay powerseller 90 days after my first sale and networked locally. Fast forward another few years and now I have my own website and live on a beautiful small farm in Washington State where I can now produce a portion of my raw materials including beeswax, herbs and essential oils.

My favorite thing about my business is being able to combine two of my life’s passions: Science and Nature. I love learning about each ingredient and combining them together to make a brand new product. I’ve always been interested in art and science equally. In high school I focused on art and in college I focused on science. I always wanted to work in a field that allowed me to express myself creatively and scientifically. Soap making is both science and art. It is chemistry and art blended carefully with a touch of love.

In December 2010 I restructured my soap company and began using a charitable business model inspired by Toms Shoes Company. For every retail bar of soap that I sell, I donate one bar of soap to a charity or charity fund raiser. When I went into
labor prematurely with my twins, I had to take an emergency flight to another city that was equipped with the resources to care for two premature infants. During that time I stayed at the Ronald McDonald House and used donated soaps. I knew then that I wanted to find a way to give back to people and I am glad that my business in is a position to do this. Thanks to my awesome customers I have been able to make donations to various shelters and organizations and raise money for Tsunami relief, Tornado relief and other good causes.

The most difficult part of my job is time management. I often feel as if I don’t have the time to do all the things I want to do. I have a lot of big ideas so prioritizing my work load is my greatest challenge. I cannot afford to be stressed or frustrated. I absolutely love what I do and I remind myself of that on a regular basis. I try to stay focused on one task until it is complete instead of trying to accomplish 100 things at once. Time management never came natural to me so I work on it daily.

 

I love using Nature’s Garden fragrances in my fragrance items. I’ve shopped around and have not seen any other fragrance supplier that offers such high quality for the price. I really appreciate that as a small business. I also trust their fragrances. Each fragrance description includes usage rates for various applications and even includes cold process soap results. I’ve never had a Nature’s Garden fragrance that didn’t do exactly what I expected it to.

 

In the past I have been very limited on the number of craft shows I could attend with my children being so young. Now that they are getting a little older I hope to attend more craft shows and local markets. I love getting out there and meeting people. I’d like to put a lot more focus on my local markets this upcoming year.

My name is Nancy Krainz. I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have been making soap since 2004. I became interested after seeing a show about soap making on TV. I starting out with traditional Cold Process and worked my way through Hot Process, Rebatch, Whipped and Liquid Soap making but always made my way back to the traditional method. I felt creativity was limited in Cold Process, so, I got into Melt and Pour soap making and discovered that creativity is limited only by ones imagination.

I started my home based company in 2005 and added many products to my line. I named the business LydiaMarie’s Bath and Body Boutique and began selling on consignment through local craft stores. I was able to get a wholesale account with a local, private owned bath and body shop and over the past 7 years have been their sole supplier for lotions, foot cream and lip balm.

I was working towards opening  a brick and mortar store when the economy went on the down swing, and, at the same time, I was diagnosed with cancer. My business was placed on hold for about a year as I obtained treatment for my illness, and, thankfully, today I am healthy and moving forward in life.

 

About a year ago I decided to get into jewelry making, so, to better portray my extended product line, changed the name of my business to Pocket Full of Sunshine Boutique. It is a happy sounding name and makes me smile. I love the sunshine.

The thing I like best about owning this business is  I very much enjoy creating things. The biggest downfall is being a perfectionist. I seldom make something that I am 100% happy with. I always see room for improvement and constantly strive for perfection.

I like Nature’s Garden Candle & Soap Supplies because I very much appreciate nature and all things natural.

My goals for the coming year are to move forward in fulfilling my dream of having a brick and mortar store.
