Happy 4th of July from Natures Garden

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

usaHappy 4th of July from all of us at Natures Garden! Today is a day to be thankful for the freedoms we have, and to be reminded of how important it is to never take those freedoms for granted. The rights we have in the US are individual rights, not collective rights; thus protecting the individual from mob rule. Very courageous men and women have fought to keep those rights for us, and I am eternally grateful to our military for everything they do for this country. I am also grateful to all of the constitution-supporting elected officials who fight everyday to keep our freedoms alive and well.  Without personal freedoms, it would be very difficult to make the American Dream come true.

My personal life story, I have been told, is a story of the American Dream that came true.  I say this with all humbleness, and thoroughly understand that my American Dream story did not come true simply by my efforts or my business knowledge alone.  My American Dream came true by building a team of people who were committed to making Natures Garden a success, and due to the customers who have believed in us over the years.  Back in 1997 when we started Natures Garden, the only thing we had going for us was a “commitment to a dream”.  Working out of a very small basement, we had no money, very very limited space, and very little help.  I knew we needed to find help to make this dream come true, but how in the world would I get people to believe in this dream I had?  Let’s face it, the work environment was a far cry from something that looked like it had the potential of success.natures garden crew

I told myself that if my company would ever be taken seriously, I would have to treat my dream with respect, and get people to work with me who believed in that dream too.  I surrounded myself with people who believed in me and the company dream.  Being only 29 years old, fired up with ambition, I was some how able to sleep only a few hours a night without killing myself.  Everyday I would say to my team, “Failure is not an option”.

You see, nothing in life has come easy to me.  At one point in my life, living in a small trailer, I could not even afford fuel oil to stay warm in the middle of winter.  Even at the lowest point in my life, I never thought I had it rough.  I simply picked up extra shifts waitressing to make ends meet.  For some reason, God has always provided.  Things do not fall into my lap, and if there is such a thing as “luck”, I sure have none.  What I have is an obsessive work ethic, and an uncontrolled optimism that great things can and will happen when you remain committed to what you want to achieve. In America, if you dream it, you truly can achieve it.  It may not be easy (it sure wasn’t for me), but we do have a system that allows ambitious people to reach their dreams.

After 16 years in business, I look back and I am truly thankful for the Freedoms I have in America.  Without those rights, and without elected officials who fight to keep those rights, small businesses in America would not exist.  I am thankful to all of our customers who have believed in us over the years.  I am thankful for the amazing team I get to work with at Natures Garden.  These people truly care about our customers, and they care about their personal performance.  God bless all of you, and may God continue to Bless the USA!

Natures Garden Voted #1 in Fragrance Oils

Monday, November 5th, 2012

Natures Garden has a vast company history dating back some 20 years.  However, it is a little known fact that this year’s 2012 Favorite Fragrance Supplier of the year, was not the same business at its conception.

In the early 1990’s, looking to help make ends meet for her family, Deborah Ward, ventured into the candle making realm of crafting.  Starting as a newbie herself, Deborah was on a quest to find out everything that she could about her new undertaking.  As I am sure you have already figured out, this wasn’t a very internet savvy time, so it turned into quite a task at hand.

Finding very little information available, her next option was to learn through experience.  Turning their quaint Elyria, Ohio home into a candle production area, Deborah and her husband Mike, through trial and error started producing candles.  Once they felt they had the method mastered, Natures Garden candles hit the market.  In 1997, through word of mouth, the business really started to take off.  With all of this new found popularity, Natures Garden hired more than 40 independent sales representatives.  Natures Garden generated revenue by means of home parties, retail sales, wholesale sales, open houses, and fundraisers.

With success on the rise, frustration began to ensue as Natures Garden grew.  Certain deficiencies appeared in the supply chain and there was a lack of uniqueness in the market.  Mike and Deborah often felt that some of their suppliers fell short in providing the supportive relationship they were looking for.  Then, due to the secrecy of the handcrafted market in both candles and toiletries, it seemed as if even more obstacles were preventing Natures Garden from truly expanding its product line.

Figuring there had be other crafters seeking a positive relationship with their own suppliers, Mike and Deborah decided that there needed to be a candle and toiletry supplier that would help its customers succeed.  The company had to have a foundation based on solving the three problems they noticed:  poor customer service, lack of available information, and product uniqueness.  By May of 1999, Natures Garden Candle Supply Company was official and its customer service and available industry information were turning heads in the industry.

Providing the market with knowledge and great customer service was a feat in itself.  However, Mike and Deborah did not stop there.  Really looking to offer a new kind of company, Natures Garden focused its sights on being different.  Thus, the NG Original Fragrances were born.  These fragrance oils were not only one-of-a-kind, but they also were of high quality, and were available at very competitive prices.  Unique became the name of their game.

Today, housing almost 800 different fragrance oils, and thousands of various cosmetic, candle, and toiletry supplies; Natures Garden’s perfumists and staff work very diligently to keep those same values that the company was founded on.  Now shipping worldwide, Natures Garden has business relationships with over 100,000 customers strong.

In the November 2012 issue of Saponifier the Magazine, Natures Garden was awarded the 2012 Favorite Fragrance Supplier of the Year.  This yearly Raves for Faves contest asks all crafters from hobbyist to owners to vote for their favorite suppliers.  Ballots are counted, and all winners are then announced in one of the magazines publications.

We would now like to truly thank all of our wonderfully creative customers.  It goes without saying that helping you succeed is what drives our passion in producing strong, unique, and fun fragrance oils.  For without all of you, your love, acceptance, and loyalty as returning customers, Natures Garden would not exist.

A special thank you also needs to go out to any of our amazing customers that took time out of their busy schedules to vote for Natures Garden as one of their favorite suppliers.  We really do appreciate all of the positive and kind words cast about us.

So, in honor of the 2012 Raves for Faves, Natures Garden would also like to announce that we too have counted our ballots and by a massive landslide Natures Garden’s customers were voted this year’s Favorite Customers Ever!  Congratulations to all of you!  It is through all of your hard work, creative genius, and go getting attitudes that you were selected as our clear winner over everyone else.

Love of Learning

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

This Valentine’s Day show some love to your creative side.

That’s right folks, it is time to extend our boundaries and experiment with some new products.  I know all too well how exciting it is when Natures Garden carries new fragrance oils, bases, additives, colorants, etc.  Something new, anything new, I love it all!

What is it about change?  Change is good.  Change allows us to hit the refresh button and bask in the glory of new and all its possibilities.  The thought of expanding our knowledge and know how of homemade goodies seems to revitalize everything for the better.  So, as we settled into the New Year let’s welcome the newbies by giving them a try.

In case you missed it, here are some of our newest products at Natures Garden:

Lip Tints:  These are awesome.  With 6 different colors to choose from all things lip just got a whole lot sexier.

Activated Charcoal:  A great way to add a detoxifying agent to your homemade soap.  This additive has a dual purpose as a natural black colorant too.  That’s two, yes two things for the price of one.  I guess that makes it a deal and a steal.  HA!

Vegetable Glycerin:  This has been on my wish list for a long time.  Finally here, this amazing liquid has tons of uses in bath, body, and home.  Once you get your hands on this, you will definitely be coming back for more.

Fractionated Coconut Oil:  Talk about being a multi-purpose, there is almost too much to mention.  Whether you are using it as a carrier or a substitute, in toiletries or cosmetics; the capabilities are endless.  Bonus, this fractionated coconut oil stays a liquid in relatively low temperatures.

Cream of Tartar:  It’s not just for the kitchen anymore!  This is one ingredient needed if you are looking to make fabulous bubble bars.

Fun Soap Colorants:  Although these colorants are super Fun… I refer to them as blast in a bottle!  These non-bleeding vivid colors will make a bold statement in your M&P or CP soap line.   If you are looking to add a little wow factor to your soap products, this is an excellent item to start with.   PS… No color morphing!

Titanium Dioxide Oil Dispersible Powder:  This natural mineral is an excellent whitener; perfect for soaps, toiletries, and so much more.

White Beeswax Pastilles:  Straight from the honeycomb, this naturally bleached beeswax is a splendid addition for everyone’s line.

Cookie Cutters:  Whether you are looking to bake some cookies, make hanging air fresheners, or get cleverly creative, these cookie cutters are a must have.  They are just too cute to pass up!

Finally, I do have an honorable mention to the new products.

Welcome Back Mica Pigment:  Oh how I missed you while you were gone.  If there is one thing that is never going to go out of style, it is shimmer!  This product is a love it, gotta have it in both colors diamond and 24K gold!  Bling me up Scotty!

So everyone, let’s get a little messy, broaden our horizons, and test some new products.

I was given some wise advice when I was younger.  Although then, I didn’t quite understand it, now I find that it applies to almost everything I do.   I am now going to pass this wisdom onto you: “Don’t sit on the sidelines and let life pass you by.  Get out there, make mistakes, and take chances; for this is the process of learning.  With age comes wisdom, and what is the purpose of your life if you don’t live, laugh, and love.”

Success with Aromatherapy

Interview with Jolene From Southern Roots Natural Healing Store & Aromatherapy Shoppe

What’s your name & Your Company Name (Why Did you choose that name?):

Jolene Hull, Owner/Operator of Southern Roots Natural Healing Store & Aromatherapy Shoppe here! I chose this name based on the concept that natural products should really be naturally (many mass marketed products claim to be “natural”, but are not) made – my goal was to go back to my “roots” with my store and it’s products. All Natural and All Handmade with the highest quality ingredients.

How did you get into this business?

One of those light bulb moments in 2009 – I have always loved the idea of owning my own business. I started making soaps for gifts around the holidays for my dance team and I soon realized I wanted to make it more than a hobby.

What is your favorite part of this business?

Creating new and exciting items and experimenting with new ingredients.

What’s the most difficult part?

Labels! Trying to get that “look” to reflect the product you have made – it can be challenging at times.

What’s your favorite product or aspect of Natures Garden?

They have a great range of products at great prices. My favorite thing is that they are family owned.

What are your goals for the coming year for your business?

New and improved product lines for hair care and more variation of spa inspired items. We’re also going to start offering classes in our shop as well.

Natural Body Products Interview

Interview with Maria From Naturally Balanced

My first company name was Home Naturals by Maria when I started making body products from home while I went to school for holistic healthcare. It helped pay my tuition. But once I finished, I needed something that was more fitting. My company name is now Naturally Balanced. While I was trying to come up with names it was hard to find something that fit everything I do. I have people tell me all the time how balanced I am and since I one to go natural as I can with everything I do, Naturally Balanced just seemed to fit.

I have always had some sort of business of my own starting at about ten years old. Grandpa McKinley was a pharmacist when it was a more natural approach. I learned a lot from him and my mom who also has always shown us a healthy lifestyle. About 23 years ago my mom became ill. Misdiagnosed several times she continued to get worse, her illness is very much like Lupus, but we still call it “it” as still we don’t know what it is. Anyway, Holistic and western approaches combined are the only thing to help. So I already had an interest into Holistic Healthcare, but when I broke my back and only holistic healers could give me relief, that was my sign it was my calling. I had worked in a assisted living home and managed the Alzheimer unit and stared to research on how aromatherapy could help the residents. I was hooked! A short while later I decided to get a degree in holistic healthcare and during one of the classes we learned about manufacturing natural body products for healing and this became my stress therapy. Finally in the end I am now a nutritional consultant and life coach who loves to make body products as well.

I absolutely LOVE being able to help people with every contact I make and product I sell. Every time I help another person my heart swells with joy and love. My children can see this makes me happy and that makes them happy too! So much so the have started there own line for kids. I am excited everyday that we can share the joy. So far, 6 years later, it still doesn’t get old and I get excited over each thing I have to do for my business. It is hard to say what my favorite part is, because I love it all. But if I have to pick, it would be the world of smiles I receive from what I do and that I am able to do what I love.

The most difficult part is finding time for all I wasn’t to do and having people understand my business is not just about the smell goods, but how the products have health benefits too. I don’t make items based on smell, but how they can help someone. That’s my
nitch. I sit down with a client and find out as much as I can about them and develop a product I feel will help them. People just don’t seam to understand this.

I ran across Natures Garden on accident one day during the show and tell time on Thursday. I could feel the community of others trying to work together and not against each other and that is a hard thing to find were I live. The people on the page are kind and helpful.

I have several goals for the next year (I am a goals kind of person) however I would say my biggest goal would be to branch out of
my comfort zone and out of my community. I want to take my business to 5 more towns by 2013. Along with having consistent orders and clients from them.

Diamond Particles and Candles

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

You know what they say… “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” and now in retrospect, so are candles!!!

The other day, I was googling.  I know, I know, you are probably not surprised!  But, I was and I stumbled upon this really interesting article.  Let me give you a little teaser as to why you will never view a burning candle the same way again.

“You have the glittering beauty of gold and silver, and the still higher luster of jewels, like the ruby and diamond; but none of these rival the brilliancy and beauty of flame.  What diamond can shine like flame?”

-Michael Faraday    Scientist/Lecturer- The Chemical History of a Candle circa 1860

We all know that candles have been in existence for many years.  The candle has actually dated back some 2,000 years.  The invention of the first candle was accredited to ancient China.  Thank you ancient China!  Since that time, for many people, there has always been an infatuation with the candle flame and its alluring and captivating dance.

Well, as it turns out, Dr. Zhou, a Professor of Chemistry has recently found that diamond particles actually exist in the flames of a burning candle.  The notion of why we are drawn to candle flames can now be explained.  Candle flames are much like sirens, calling us to get lost in their essence.  Now, one of the big questions has been solved.

In a candle flame, there are actually two different kinds of diamonds, although they are in nonoparticle and fullerenic particle form.  According to Dr. Zhou’s research there are 1.5 million diamond particles that are created for every second that a candle wick has a burning flame.  Now, hold on ladies, don’t get too excited.  The diamond particles are burned off.  Sadly, in order for the flame to stay that way, the burning process must keep going, turning the diamond particles into carbon dioxide.

Dr. Zhou also found that inside the center of a candle flame, there exists all 4 forms of carbon.  This finding is very fascinating because all four forms of carbon need different circumstances in order for their creation.   It is quite a mystery as to how this can be, but I know that I am happy knowing that my candle flames are diamond creators.  It takes crafting pretty things to a whole new level.

All of this information is great fun facts to use while promoting your candles.

One fabulous idea in container candles to really take it to the next level would simply be to extend the sparkle and beauty inside the flame to the outside.  After a candle has been poured, set up, and cured, take glue and carefully cover the outside of the candle glass.  Stay away from the opening, because you do not want to make a fire hazard.  This would not be a pretty thing.  Then, while the glue is still wet, roll it carefully in glitter.  I prefer a silver or white small grade glitter to produce a diamond sparkle that will be unmatched by other candles on the market.  Do not over glue.  I found that what works best is to squirt the glue in a paper towel, and wipe the outside of the glass down.  This will prevent the weight of the glue pulling and collecting at the base of the container.  Also, if you have patches of unglitterized surface let the candle glass dry as is, and simply touch up the glue in the area and sprinkle glitter to your liking.  Finally, add a cute thick ribbon, preferable hot pink to really hit the aspect of femininity home, and start selling away!

So, flicker away flames.  We will now sit back and awe in your wonderful luster and appeal.

Candle Company Success Story

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Ashley & Erica From Ashka Candles

Our names are Ashley Sanatore and Erika Mutschelknaus and our company is Ashka Candles. The meshing of our first names.

We were tired of always buying candles that had amazing cold throw but didn’t smell up a room at all when lit. And the only candles that ever seem to have a great hot throw are far more expensive than they should be. We wanted to create a wonderful product with high quality and still be affordable for everyone.

Our favorite part of business is seeing the customers’ faces light up when they smell our products. Everyone always seems shocked that we are just two 26 year old girls who hand-make all of our products. It gives us a great satisfaction to know that we are making something that everyone can enjoy. It doesn’t matter if they are young, old, female, male…. EVERYONE loves candles. And being able to make amazingly scented candles that everyone can afford just makes all the work worth it. The most difficult part of our business is maintaining our low prices as the cost of all supplies rises. It is also difficult at times to juggle our full-time everyday jobs with this expanding “hobby” but we always find a way to make it work!

There are so many great products from Natures Garden Candle Supply, but the fragrance oils are just amazing! And we love the review feature! We always look at the reviews of a fragrance before we buy it to see how it has sold for other customers.  It is a great feature that we haven’t found with any other company. Our goals for the coming year are to expand more into other beauty products. We currently sell candles and lotions, but would like to add body spray and perhaps bath gel. We would also like to possibly get into a shop in the very near future.

Everything Skin with NG and Kim

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Hi everyone!  My name is Kimberly Sanchez.

I am the CEO & creative artist of Natures Art Apothecary & Soap Company,  in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I began soaping when I was very young doing simple old fashioned lard and lye soap on the fire. I occasionally played at it as an adult and made it for friends and family. Most of my career I was a chef and herbalist. After a serious injury where I broke my back, I had to find something else to do. I rambled through retail jobs, made my way up through management, but it just wasn’t what I needed! I went back to making soap for a fundraising project for a group I belong to and my passion was born! I had discovered so much had changed in the soaping world! there were amazing fragrances and colors and molds and online communities! So I dove in with abandon. And that was it for me. I continued to test and experiment with all the new technology and items now available in the industry until I felt I had something worth sharing with the world. And so our little business began! My husband, Art, also caught the bug. I spent many days working as a retail manager and many late nights teaching him to soap and making our new business shine. After a few years we were selling in local shops as well as online. We had an opportunity to move here to Santa Fe, where my husband was born. We jumped on it!  He agreed to go to work for Whole Foods and let me work at our business full time. I have come to love all the science and creativity there is in the bath and body industry and continue to learn and grow everyday. I love teaching about it and sharing ideas with others. I had come to know Deb, from Natures Garden Candle & Soap Supplies a few years back. We hit it off right away!  Over time we both contributed inspiration and feedback on each others ideas. And recently, on one of our phone chats, she mentioned they were behind on their soap testing for fragrances. So I offered to help. Being as I had already been doing videos on YouTube and had established viewers, I decided to do some of the testing on camera, so other Soapers could actually SEE what they did. This was received so enthusiastically, we have now expanded this to video product testing, an online presence on Face Book, Q&A night and now a blog! We are very excited to be collaborating on this new adventure together. I look forward to all your positive feedback and know you will be patient with me as I adapt to this new experience and get better with my camera!  LOL

manly man fargarnce oil

Alright Ladies, now that I have your attention!

I think it is safe to say that every woman wants their ideal Manly Man.  We dream of our knight in shining armor that will sweep us off our feet and make all of our fantasies reality, or at least I do.  But, I often wonder if this Perfect Man even exists?

Well, he has to.  My reasoning-Taoism, just like yin and yang, good and evil, opposite factors must exist.  I know for a fact that Womenly Women inhibit the earth.  They are everywhere.  If you need to see proof, just look in the mirror.

We are women; irreplaceable, affectionate, perfect, sexy beings who can do it all.  In today’s society, it has almost become the norm that we are expected to be everyone’s everything; the “Jack-of- all-trades” so to speak.  We’re unpaid CEO’s of the house, chiefs, chauffeurs, maids, doctors, accountants, therapists, landscapers, personal assistants, referees, coordinators, the list is endless.  And I am not even talking about our full time careers in the workforce, this all takes place afterhours.   What a reality check for any woman.  I know in my life, if my days are not filled with a million things to do, then I must still be sleeping.

Honestly, it did take some adjustment in accepting all of these roles as I am sure it does for any woman.  I can look back now, and say as a young girl, playing house with my Cabbage Patch Dolls and cooking desserts in my Easy Bake oven can’t even hold a candle to what is expected of women today.  Well, the blunt truth as painful as it sounds is we have no choice.  I can tell you that at first, I did not lovingly accept my responsibilities.  I did it kicking and screaming, complaining and whining, fighting them tooth and nail all the way.  There was even a short period of time when I went on strike.  The result of all this pouting; double the work load, because no one else was stepping in.  It was at this point that I realized fine, I am going to take these crappy lemons and make the best hot pink lemonade anyone has ever tasted.

I had to be realistic.  There was no way I was going to get everything done I needed to each day without going into overdrive and burning myself out.  Then I realized the secret to success is time management.  My plan of attack was a spiral notebook in which I wrote everything I needed to do down.  I updated it as needed.  No smoke screens here: it is very overwhelming, but with a positive attitude, very attainable.

Once I had my master to do list written down, the next step was to prioritize it.  This involved breaking the list up into three categories: a daily, weekly, and monthly agenda.  From this point, it was easier to breathe.  I also felt more organized and energized to tackle my daily duties.

In fact, the feeling was so inspirational that I thought there has to be others out there that share my main pain as a 2011 Womanly Woman. So, hence this blog and the free super cute to do lists that are also available to help anyone that wants to harmonize their lives too.  We women need to stick together!

super mom to do list

Brief pause for the roaring applause for Womenly Women around the World!

Here are some key tips to remember:

  • Be flexible- you have to readjust matters if need be.  Agendas are not concrete, they’re just guidelines.
  • Work your to do list, don’t let it work you- prioritizing is key, hit the hardest most important items first, then the rest
is easy breezy and you can go from there.
  • Celebrate when you get to highlight something off your list.  Choose a really fun color highlighter too.
  • Know which days are your power house days.  These are the days that nothing holds you back.  These are also great days to try to get ahead.
  • ***Most Important*** Set aside time everyday just for you.  Call it “My Me Time”.  Do NOT sacrifice this time either.  It is Mandatory!  Spend the time focused on yourself.  Do things that make you happy like crafting and creating your product line!  One of my favorite me time projects is swirly soap.  It is a blast in a bar!

swirl soap

The proverbial Great Wall of China was not built overnight, so stay focused, work hard and celebrate the small stuff.  So what if your overall to do list contains 15 pages and is still a work in progress, as long as you can highlight one thing every day, you can chalk it up as a Win.

Hungry for more…

There are some really smart tips out there that help you save time around the house too.
Suggestions are things like:

  • When you put your children’s clothes away, to fold them in outfits.
  • Shop for holiday and birthday gifts year-round. Whenever you see a great gift for someone you love, buy it and set it aside for giving later.
  • Keep disinfecting and glass wipes in the bathroom for quick cleanups around toilets, sinks, and mirrors. You could even do a speedy wipe-down while you bathe the kids.
  • Get rid of one bag of clothes, toys, and books for every bag that comes into the house. It means less stuff to clean up.

The Importance of Social Media for Your Candle or Soap Business

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

We asked you…

How important is social media for promoting your products?

“Extemely!!! But word of mouth from loyal customers cant be beat!!!!”
- Patti Ann

“It will be the biggest promoting concept there could be. I am not up and running yet but I am making contacts already.”
- Sheryl

“EXTREMELY! The best word of mouth possible because it spreads across the nation, world and not just locally.”
- Ashlee

“Extremely. Word of mouth and posted recommendations help a lot as well since they help populate your company in different ways and broadly.”
- Laura

“I agree that it is a part of our culture now and we truly do need it.”
- Erin

“It’s everything for me right now other than word of mouth which is always best.”
- Lynn

“In 2011…VEEERRRYYYY! It opens up your market in such a vast way, it’s almost unfathomable. When you promote your business via social networking you go from hometown to international.”
- Dava

Super duper important!!!! would have never made sales in Sweden, Canada and Australia without it, I am pretty sure!”
- Lather Soap Co

“In a time of instant gratification, connecting to clients and customers on Facebook/Twitter/Websites is vital. Nearly the first question I get with customers, if not about my products is “Do you have a website?” and then it becomes “Can I find you on Facebook?” soon after. They want to get sales/deals quick, which is why I don’t bother with an email list, they just check Facebook for sales. It also allows the customer to feel more connected to me with fast replies.”
- Briana
