Although green tea plants will grow best in areas that are considered zone 7, you can grow this plant in colder areas, too. All you have to do is put your tea plant in a pot and bring it in during the winter. This plant can survive down to about 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, you can transfer your plant to larger pots as it grows. You will know when it is time if you see that the roots begin to push out of the drain holes in the bottom. Your green tea plant will prefer soil that drains well, like a light sandy or medium loamy soil. Further, these plants like soil that is acidic that has a pH between 4.5 and 6. Also, your plant will prefer to be in either full or partial shade.

Once your plant is thriving, you can start thinking about harvesting your tea leaves. You will want to use the young tender tea leaves. So, pick a new shoot with only a few leaves on it. For best results, you may want a new shoot with about two or three leaves on it. Typically, you will be able to harvest your tea leaves in the summer. Later, the plant will bloom to produce pretty flowers, this will happen between September and November. While these blooms are quite pretty, they aren’t all that great for making green tea. So, you may want to store some for after green tea season.

Many people are curious about how they can color their homemade soaps naturally. Of course, there are vibrant soap pigments and dyes, but what are my options for coloring soap? More importantly for all natural soap makers, How Do I Naturally Color Soap? Well, its simple, just use some cosmetic herbs. While not every herb is pigmented, there are many herbs out there that can be used to provide some wonderful colors. Plus, many herbs come with some added benefits for the body. So, Natures Garden has compiled a short natural soap colorants list that can be handy for the average soap maker.

How Do I Naturally Color Soap?: How Do You Add Herbs To Soap

Since herbs are a great way to naturally color your homemade soaps, you will want to know the ways that you can incorporate them into your recipes. Depending on the form that they come in, there are a few methods you may want to know. First, we have the easiest herb in incorporate, which is powdered herbs. The powder can simply be added to the recipe either before the CP soap reaches trace or before pouring your MP soap. Also, you can add the herb to vegetable glycerin to break up chunks before adding it, but this isn’t always necessary.

Next, we have the whole herbs, which include things like flower petals or cinnamon sticks. While there are instances where you want to add whole herbs to your soap, you don’t need this for coloring. So, these herbs can either be added in tea form or an oil infusion. For the tea all you need to do is steep your herbs in hot water to create a tea and use this as the water portion of your recipe. If you aren’t using water in your recipe, then you will want to do an oil infusion. So, you will need to create an herb oil by either allowing your herbs to soak in one of your oils for 4-6 weeks or add them to the pot as you oils melt. After, you will just need to strain out the herbs.

While many other herbs can be used to naturally color any bath and body product, the Alkanet Root is for cold process soap only. This means that you, unfortunately, won’t be able to use this to make natural purple MP soap. However, you can create some pretty gorgeous and natural cold process soaps! We at Natures Garden don’t carry this particular herb, but we still thought it was a great one to mention since it can provide a pretty purple color. Also, this can be used in differing amounts to provide a pink or even a blue color!

If you are curious to learn more about Alkanet as a natural colorant, then Lovely Green’s Growing Alkanet. Lovely Green uses a touch of this very herb to lightly color her typical lavender soap. It is a natural, light purple hue that is very pretty. The color was especially for a lavender soap! So, you will definitely want to check this herb out.

In America, when most people hear the word patchouli, they immediately think of hippies, universal love for one another, and tie dyed peace signs. But patchouli is so much more than that and has quite an interesting history.

Deriving its name from the Tamil language (the official dialect of Singapore and Sri Lanka), patchouli means “green leaf”.  A robust and extremely fragrant plant; especially when rubbed, patchouli’s scent has been used for centuries in perfumes.

Belonging to the genus Pogostemon, patchouli is a green, leafy herb that is in the mint family.  Growing best in hot, tropical climates; patchouli thrives when it is not in direct sunlight and has the potential of reaching a height of 2-3 ft.  Contrary to common belief, patchouli is more than just leaves; the plant also has flowers that bloom in late fall.  These flowers produce seeds that can be harvested to produce even more patchouli plants.

There are two ways to grow patchouli.  The first is to attain cuttings from the mother plant.  These cuttings are then rooted in water and will cultivate additional patchouli plants.  The second way to grow patchouli is to plant the seeds of the flowers.  The only hesitance with this way is that patchouli seeds are very small and have to be handled with great care.  These seeds are extremely fragile and can be easily crushed, deeming them useless.

When it comes to harvesting patchouli, the leaves of the plant can be collected several times in one year.  However, the strongest scent/oil comes from the top 3-4 pairs of leaves in the patchouli plant.  In order to attain the extraction of patchouli essential oil from these leaves, the leaves must go through a steam distillation process.  This is typically achieved with dried patchouli leaves.  However, there are some claims that to achieve the highest quality of patchouli essential oil, fresh leaves should be distilled.  Ideally, close to where the leaves are harvested, ensuring true freshness.

There are other ways to obtain patchouli essential oil.  One is through a fermentation process.  This process involves bundling the dry patchouli leaves and allowing them to ferment for a long period of time.

The essential oil of patchouli is a rich, earthy aroma with a woody yet minty undertone.  One of the most notable characteristics of this essential oil is that it actually improves over time.  The two most sought out components of patchouli essential oil are patchoulol and norpatchoulenol.

Although, it is true that patchouli essential oil is vital to the perfume industry, patchouli also had another massive worth in history.  Patchouli is believed to be an insect repellent.  It was common place for silk traders of the oriental to pack the valuable silk that they were trading with dried patchouli leaves.  Not only did the leaves prevent the mating of moths on the traders’ silk, but also hindered the moth from laying eggs on the precious silk as well.

This practice, which had started as a means of protection for the silk, ended with patchouli being considered an affluent scent.  Historians now hypothesize that due to the fragrant nature of patchouli; much of the traded silk acquired the aroma during the long travel.  Before long the distinguished scent of patchouli marked authenticity in traded fabric goods although the vast majority did not know what it was called.

One of the possible explanations as to why patchouli was considered an upscale scent to Europeans of that time is due to a notable historical conqueror.  The infamous Napoleon Bonaparte attained some of these patchouli scented cashmeres, through his vast travels to Egypt.  He then brought them back to France.  This mysterious scent of patchouli and its origin were kept secret, and it was not until the year 1837, that the smell and the source were identified to the remainder of the western world.

I wanted to take the time to acknowledge that using natural ingredients to make candles and skincare products absolutely goes hand-in-hand with a diet that is based in natural ingredients as well.

Therefore, I have compiled a list of some of the best Natural Foods blogs and websites out there to help you on your quest for using natural ingredients in every aspect of your life. These blogs are some of the most reputable and informative Natural Foods blogs I could find and I wanted to take the time to endorse them to help my followers achieve the natural living lifestyle they deserve.

1. Jules Clancy – Jules Clancy, author of The Stone Soup blog, shares quick and simple recipes that are also based on real, whole food without processed ingredients, intimidating instructions, or fancy equipment. What Ingredients are in Fragrance Oils?

fragrance bottleMost fragrances are a combination of many aromatic ingredients.  These ingredients are derived from nature or created by scientific methods. Natural Ingredients include essential oils, resins, and absolutes.

Natural Ingredients:

AROMATIC ESSENTIAL OILS are derived from plants using either distillation or cold pressing.  They are generally in liquid form.  An essential oil from one plant can vary in color, odor, and price depending on the crop from which the oil is derived.  Mother Nature rules here and variations between lots of the same oil must be assessed for suitability.  And, not all plants yield aromatic essential oils.

Examples of Aromatic Essential Oils are:  Orange Oil, Lavender Oil, Patchouli Oil, Cedar Wood Oil

RESINS are materials which are exuded from a plant when the other layer of the plant is cut.  They are dense and sticky and may solidify into a solid mass.  Heat may be required to melt some resins.   Resins are long lasting fragrance ingredients.   Examples:   Myrrh resin, Benzoin resin, Fir resin, Oakmoss resin, Copel Resin Tears.

ABSOLUTES are created by removing the aromatic components from plants which cannot yield essential oils.  Many plants are too fragile to be distilled; therefore the absolute is the form in which we capture the aromatic components of the plant.  The absolute is highly concentrated and somewhat viscous.  Now, the yield of absolute material per plant is exceptionally small, and the processing is very labor intensive.  As a result, absolutes are usually very expensive.

Examples:  Rose absolute, Orange flower absolute, Jasmine absolute, Narcisse absolute.

Manmade Ingredients include aromatic ingredients in liquid, crystalline, or powder form.  Commonly called chemicals, manmade fragrance ingredients produce a wide variety of aromatic sensations.  Some of these ingredients are also found in nature, but science can reproduce them synthetically.  The synthetic versions are generally less expensive, more consistent in odor and color and widely available.

Aromatic chemicals offer the perfumer a vast palette of materials to compliment natural ingredients.  They help control the cost of a fragrance and help ensure consistent quality.  Many aromatic chemicals can create intense, unusual or dramatic effects in a fragrance.  Most fragrances are a combination of the natural and synthetic ingredients.  The perfumer will choose materials based on odor, cost, and stability in the product being scented.
Examples of manmade aromatic materials:  citral, linalyl, acetate, phenyl, ethyl, vanillin.

These ingredients form Fragrance Oils.

Parts of a Fragrance Oilfragrance-oils

A fragrance oil is divided into 3 distinct parts.  The top note, the middle note, and the base note.  Each of these usually has an assortment of ingredients.

Top notes are the most volatile fragrance ingredients.  The top notes give the fragrance its initial burst and can provide impact in a finished product.  Top notes are the first to evaporate, leaving the middle notes of the fragrance to be explored.  Traditional top notes include citrus oil and light aromatic chemicals such as esters.

Middle notes are also called the fragrance heart.  They represent the true fragrance character.  The middle notes are longer lasting than the top notes.  These ingredients form the fragrance signature and are evident throughout most of the life of the fragrance.  Typical middle notes include floral, spice, and fruit tones.

Base Notes are also called the bottom notes or dry down.  Base notes are the longest lasting components of the fragrance.  These ingredients support the fragrance and give it depth.  Base notes remain long after the top and middle notes have evaporated.  Perfumists use base notes to anchor the volatile fragrance notes in a fragrance.  Commonly used materials for base notes are musk, vanilla, resins, and woods.
