fragrance oilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name:  Creatively Handcrafted

Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I started candle making over 12 years ago as just a hobby.  I love candles and wanted to give it a try.  I enjoyed making candles, however, life got in the way & I ending up taking a hiatus for about 5 years.  Only making candles for certain people.  I recently restarted with a whole new look, new name and all new candles.

What products do you make and sell?  I make all types of candles as well as wax dipped critters.  Recently I have tried my hand at some soap making & bath melts.  Thanks to Natures Garden for the recipes and ideas to try.

What are your business goals?  My new goals are to build my business with regular repeat customers.  I want to provide a quality product that people can enjoy just as much as I did when I created it.  I am currently working full time trying to get my business restarted.

What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  I always get my fragrances from Natures Garden.  I find that they are reasonably priced and always excellent quality.  I recently purchased items for bath melts.  I would have never even thought of trying to make anything else but with the recipes it seemed too easy not to try.  I can’t say that I have a favorite because I have not received anything I didn’t like.

1. What’s your name & Your Company Name?  Nichole, Nichole’s Candle Creations

2. Why did you decide to go into business? What was your motivation? How long have you
been in business?
Back in 2007, I got injured on the job as a patient care assistant and ended up out of work for a period of time. Since I had extra time on my hands, I wanted to learn how to make candles. It originally started as just a hobby. I then started trying to come up with unique ideas and decided to allow others to purchase my art. My motivation was to allow others to have something with a personal touch versus something you would just pick up in the store. I have been working out of my home since 2011.

3. What products do you make and sell?  I currently sell tea lights, rose shaped candle melts, heart shape candle melts, cat candles, heart candles, votives, and lip balms. My candles are made out of crème wax and soy wax depending on the product being made. I would also like to expand into more products in the near future.

4. What are your business goals?  Rather than focusing on long term goals and variables I cannot predict, I like to focus my immediate efforts on expanding my own independence day by day.  I intend to expand my catalog as well as expand my business in the online world.  Much of what I am doing is being played by ear.  I find that remaining open ended allows for more opportunities and less difficulty in handling success in unplanned venues.

5. What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  The products I have tried from Natures Garden have been Frosted Gift Bags, Incense Sticks, DPG Solvent Liquid, Strawberry Cheesecake Lip Balm Kit and Rosemary Mint Type Fragrance Oil.  Natures Garden is new to me, so I haven’t had the opportunity to try many products as of yet but look forward to trying more.  As of right now, I really liked the strawberry cheesecake starter kit. It was easy to make and fun to do.

Fragrance Oils1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name: Hartley House Candle Company

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  Looking back on how this journey began is sort of interesting. I suppose a piece of Hartley House Candle Company has always been with me in one way or another.

Nearly twenty years ago, I was away with a good friend of mine on a cabin camping trip. On one of our day adventures, we happened upon a small country candle store. Shelves upon shelves, bins upon bins of candles! Votives, pillars, tea lights, tapers, jars…it was a scent lover’s paradise! I was in awe! I remember filling trays with votives, determined to sample as many as I could not knowing if/when I’d get back there. I used those votives so sparingly because I enjoyed them so much I didn’t want to get to the last one.  Nearly ten years later, my passion for candles was firmly rooted. I hid them in my dorm room, I made sure I always had several I loved in my small apartment, etc. I was thrilled to supplement my teaching income working in a local Yankee Candle store, taking full advantage of the associate discount!  Then I met my husband, stopped teaching and entered into the corporate world, my means of relaxing was a soft smelling candle and warm bath. Soon after buying our house and getting engaged, we discovered our first little baby was on the way.  While being a wife & mother will always be my greatest joy and truest accomplishment, I am almost sad to admit I felt something missing from my personal life. I have a wonderful group of friends, family that is genuinely amazing (on both sides) and a supportive loving husband.  So, what was my problem?! Only now do I know the answer. I have always been a creative person. I love reading, writing, crafting and what was missing was that “just for me” time. Everything I did was because I was someone’s wife, daughter, sister, mother, employee, friend. But what was I doing for me?  I confided in my husband many times. It wasn’t that I was unhappy. I certainly was not. I just felt like there had to be more. I started scrap booking but didn’t enjoy it much. I tried other crafts, sewing, crocheting , etc but it just wasn’t my thing. I made a few projects around the house and was proud that I crafted something that brought happiness and beauty to our home.  Then I asked my husband for a candle making kit because I wanted to try my hand at a genuine hobby I found intriguing. Immediately, upon first pour, I was hooked!  I adore the process of selecting scents, molding, etc. This candle making was quickly my mental break from being everyone else’s somebody. When we decided to turn my passion over to a business venture, my only caveat was that it had to be all mine. I would craft my own candles, not resell other’s work. I would add scents to the shop and form relationships with my ‘customers.’  I suppose technically I opened shop 6 months ago (October 2012) and since then I have met amazing people, refined my craft and found myself in ways I didn’t even know I was missing. I will forever be grateful for this journey of self-discovery and for my loyal customers who bring me such joyous pride; that humble ol’ me could make candles they enjoy as I did mine from that little country candle shop!

3.  What products do you make and sell?  Hartley Candle Company sells container candles (mason jars, keepsake jars, balmoral jars, aluminum tins), tealights, pillars, votives, and a growing number of shaped candles.

4.  What are your business goals?  Here at Hartley House Candle Company, I believe that beautiful, aromatic candle products can be crafted with love and consideration for our health & well being, as well as with an earnest respect for our environment.  Hartley House is committed to producing high-quality candle products with integrity, using healthy materials that are conscious of both physical and mental well being as environmentally sound.  My goal is to continue to grow in my trade and offer the best candle products to the candle loving market!

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  I love Nature’s Garden products. Currently I use a variety of the fragrance oils including Sangria Punch and Basil Sage & Mint which are two of my most well-loved scents!  I also use the Reed Diffuser Base, aluminum tins and rattan reeds for products offered in my shop.

Soy Jar Candles with Fragrance Oils

Fragrance-oils-41.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  Laura & Robert Coronado,  Laura’s Designs

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I have a Belgian Tervuren, and while there were some cross stitch patterns available, they weren’t capturing the detail of the breed that I was looking for.  I had dabbled in counted cross stitch designs before, so I designed several patterns of the breed.  I received a positive response to the designs.   I have a BS in Biochemistry and mainly worked in laboratory settings, I needed a creative outlet for my artistic side, so I decided to design more patterns.  I was fortunate, when I lived in Rock Hill, SC, to have a cross stitch store across the street. They held a competition and I entered a design in the Original Design category of a racehorse and jockey.  While it didn’t win, it was received very favorably by the owners of the shop.  After returning to Spartanburg, SC, I continued designing patterns and, wanting to work with more color, I started doing birds.  I showed some of the designs to the shop in Rock Hill, and they asked if I could do a design of a Congo African Grey as they had a customer looking for one. I continued to work on designs for fun and occasional sales. In the back of my mind, I wanted to start a business but working full time, it stayed there.  Then in June 1996 I found myself unemployed and decided it was time to get serious about starting a business.  Originally, the business was all mail order, selling my patterns by placing ads in dog and bird magazines.  Eventually, as the internet grew, I opened an eBay store and over time the business became exclusively online, with a few customers that still mail order, and I added my own website in addition to eBay.  Over the years I continued to grow the business, while working full time.   I married Robert in April of 2010 and about a year and half later, after I had a temp job end, he wanted to contribute to the business.  He always had an interest in candles and decided to learn candle making.  We decided on Soy Wax for environmental and health reasons.  With my core business based mainly on dogs and dog show people, we added a line of hand-painted dog silhouette candles to help us pull that group into our new line, along with attracting general candle lovers with the unpainted jar candles and tarts.  We also offer other hand-painted designs.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  Counted Cross Stitch patterns of dogs (most AKC breeds), horses, birds, cats, tropical fish (freshwater and marine), and custom patterns from customer’s photos of their pets.  Coronado Candles line of  hand-poured, made to order, Soy Wax Jar Candles in a variety of sizes, both plain and hand-painted.  Soy Wax Tarts in a variety of sizes and designs. Digital prints of some of my original artwork, mainly pencil drawings.  Fuzzy Squeakers, which are hand-crocheted  for dog show handlers to bait dogs in the show ring.  We are really excited about a new squeaker product coming out that will be crocheted using Chiengora (dog hair yarn).

4.  What are your business goals?  Our goal is to continue growing our business and reaching a larger market with all of our products.  Since my husband had a stroke last March, neither one of us has been able to work outside the home so growing the business has been a priority.  The candle making has been great therapy for him and he spends a lot of time researching and coming up with new designs and ideas for our Coronado Candles line.  We are hoping, during this next year, to add reed diffusers (using NG aroma buds) and hand-made soaps.  In addition,  I will be working on adding the remaining AKC breeds to our counted cross stitch line and adding more prints and photos, and begin doing custom pencil drawings.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  We use the Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye, Fragrance Oils, and Wicks.  We have found that all of the NG products are absolutely amazing…   Your dyes work so much better than some others we have tried.  Among our favorite scents from NG are Key Lime Pie, Dark Gourmet Chocolate, Chocolate Covered Cherries, and Jelly Bean!

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  Jason is a craftsman and exhibit designer/builder. He decided to start making functional art and meat smokers out of wine barrels.  I enjoy making candles and we decided to merge the two ideas and create structures to hold candles and the make several types of candles and art pieces.  We love vintage creations and unique designs. Our business address is on Vintage Hills Dr so the idea to bring the two together was very natural and was the motivation for our business name and idea.  Our Motto: Wine Barrel, Culinary, and Candle creations that represent the rich heritage of the South ~ Custom Oak Wine Barrel Meat and Veggie Smokers, Gourmet Servers, Wall Decor, Candle Holder Staves, Glass Candles, Votives, and melts.  We both have full-time careers so we started it off as a hobby and experiment and opened our business as an LLC on September 13, 2012.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  Each wine barrel product from Vintage Hills Smoking Barrel & Candle Co. is handcrafted by Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana native, Jason Hancock, on Hancock Ranch surrounded by the vineyards and forest of the Brazos Valley, Texas.  All of our environmentally friendly up-cycled wood pieces are made completely out of beautiful American and French oak wine barrels, and, when available cognac barrels. Jason’s goal is to build distinctive, unique, high quality wood products for the wine, candle, and culinary enthusiast.  Every craft will be a unique topic of conversation in your home, your ranch, your business, or in a winery.

Vintage Hills Smoking Barrel & Candle Co. products are sold finely finished and are 100% made from the parts of each barrel.  Each piece is made from quality materials with the highest standards.  Every wood product goes through a variance of stages of sanding, top quality stain application, protective finishes, glues, and hardware.

Our very functional oak wine barrel smokers will cook meat and vegetables.  We also create gourmet culinary server barrel head board and stave trays, sacoche de selles (pannier baskets), milieu ambiance stave candle holders for tea light, double stave Libbey candle bowl sets, and stave crosses.

Jason also does custom counter tops and cabinetry, exhibits and air brush design, and vintage auto restoration.

The historical three state series line of Culture Eternal Candles by the Vintage Hills Smoking Barrel & Candle Co. is a tribute to the long standing testament of our southern states of the Deep South and Southwest and the mysterious and enriching journey and legacy of our ancestors to where we are today.  Our candles are for anywhere in the home and feature a signature, kitchen, wine, and healing spa collection.

We feature a baby shower series, a wedding and bridal shower series, and can whip up some pristine custom candle and stave beauty for your special occasion party/event with bulk pricing. We also have wholesale pricing for vendors.

4.  What are your business goals?  New Product Development: We will be and introducing clay pottery containers and creating a French Providence and Navajo inspired Rustic Pillar Series that will adhere to a mobile double stave candle holder, more spa pieces with essential oils and Bachelorette Party spa lotion candles partnering with a bath and body vendor in Mississippi.  We also attend several design/ jewelry expos and markets annually and what sets our candles apart are the gems, crystals, and stones we put on each candle container/pillar and incorporating states with the good memories familiar to the people that live in them.  We will also be expanding the Tree of Life and the Culture Eternal States Series candles selection by demand.  We will continue to attend these diverse expos and market places to bring the finest quality products home to the client.  We really look forward to opening our own gallery with a multimedia showcase of several types of art and tons of candle options.  Also, who wouldn’t love to attend classes at the World Congress Supplies Trade Show…a little start-up can dream haha.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  We have whole signature candle collections from Natures Garden Fragrance Oils and wicking supplies; especially fragrances like Kudzu.  The supplies are wonderful, but as important as quality materials are– the camaraderie, epic list of resources and opportunity to be able to advertise, meet other vendors, and see other amazing creations coupled with actually being able to put a face to the name are what really set Natures Garden apart from other suppliers.

Candles scented with Essential Oils

mystic

1. What’s your name & Your Company Name:   My name is Rev. Amanda Darlage.  My company name is Mystic Paths.

2. Why did you decide to go into business? What was your motivation? How long have you been in business?  I went into business for several reasons.  One, I wanted something that was mine, that I could grow and would give me pride.  Two, there are no shops where I live that offered these products where I live, and the nearest ones were an hour away but mostly sold mass produced (and often tacky) goods.  I was looking for authentic, hand-made items, not a bunch of resin-cast items with a weird predilection for putting skulls everywhere, or other things that conform to stereotypes.  Three, I wanted a way to meet other like-minded individuals, as many where I live are still largely underground because of the conservative nature of the town.  Four, I wanted to put my education to work.  I hold an associate’s degree in business and another in accounting.  I did not have the capital to open a store but was offered the online store at a decent price. I also run booths at local events and have been in business for four years.

3. What products do you make and sell?  A majority of the items I craft are the palm wax candles.  I use essential oils for the scents instead of fragrances.  I also put together different kinds of herbal kits and perform services, such as weddings & handfastings.  I sell a variety of products, including gemstones, jewelry, home decor, and much more.  I try to stay away from mass produced items; however, will order just about anything a customer wants.  My favorites are the handmade products.

4. What are your business goals?   One of my goals is to have as much of what I sell handcrafted and as little as possible manufactured by corporations.  Currently, one of my biggest goals is to find an artist who can forge unique athames at an affordable price, something simple and true. Another of my goals is to eventually open a brick-and-mortar store where people can come in and meet.  It wouldn’t just be a store, but a place of meeting, a place of learning and practice, a place where workshops can be held, or simply discussions over a cup of tea or coffee.

5. What are some products you use from Natures Garden?  The products I use are mostly the essential oils and candle molds. I will use the fragrance oils upon request i.e. food scents.
