Natural Spider Deterrents

House Spider

Let me be honest with you, I do not like uninvited guests residing in my home. This is particularly true when it comes to insects but even more specifically spiders.

Natural Spider Deterrents- Make your Own

I know that the species of spiders is very beneficial for the world.  The majority of spiders are harmless.  They eat tons of insects.  In fact they are the most dominant predators on the planet, and do a great job at keeping the insect population under control.

Their webbing that they spin is one of the strongest materials in existence.  This webbing or silk even bets out Kevlar (the material in bullet proof vests) in strength.   Researchers and Scientists are still trying to replicate the spider’s silk on a molecular level in hopes of being able to recreate it for huge medical and safety advancements.

And, when it comes to importance of spiders, it has to be mentioned that no one should ever forget Charlotte’s web reminding us always to stay “humble”.

But, even though I know all of this; it doesn’t seem to make a difference when I see one crawling down the wall, or dropping from the ceiling.  They just freak me out.  I think it is the eyes, and probably all of the horror movies I have seen with them too.  Who knows, maybe it is just a girl thing.  But, one thing is for sure, I would prefer that they would not be in my house.  So, what to do… research of course and find ways to ensure that I am not allowing a spider breeding ground where I reside.

Not going the traditional pesticide route because I have small children and a zoo of pets, I stumbled upon a couple of great ways to reduce the amount of spiders in my home.  I figured since spiders typically scare others too, I would share this information with all of you as well.

One of the first steps in keeping a spider free home is to keep it tidy.  Spiders love clutter.  Clutter allows ample hiding places for them.  Spiders typically like to live in your homes crevices, corners, and lesser manned areas of your home such as under the beds, closets, basements, attics, and garages.  By keeping a tidy house, you are eliminating their hiding places.

If possible, keep all vegetation around your house such as trees and bushes, cut and trimmed.  Spiders love to live in plants and ivy vines, but this beautiful vegetation can turn into a spider haven.  If you are able to move any potted plants away from doorways and entrances, this also moves the spiders away.  Another tip is to keep your lawn mowed and maintained.

Where ever there is spider food; there will be spiders.  So, by the same logic, if there is no food source available, the spiders will move on.  This becomes important in the case of trash cans and flies.  Spiders love flies, and flies love trash.  If possible consider moving your trash cans in the opposite direction from your home’s entrance.  This will lessen the chance of a spider entering your home when the temperature outside changes and they are seeking out warmth.  The same logic applies if you leave outside lights on.  Lights attract insects, especially at night.  Nobody wants a beacon of light showcasing your home as the hip place for insects to be; it is best to turn these lights off at night.  However, if you have an outside night light that stays on for safety reasons, you may want to consider switching the light bulb to a sodium vapor light.  These types of lights do not attract insects like regular lights do.

When it comes to precautions with insects inside the home, anytime there is left out food, insects like ants and flies are attracted.  By covering the leftovers and wiping off counters and prep space, you are lessening the chance that insects will be attracted to the scent of human food.  Vacuuming your house daily also reduces the crumbs we leave behind that attract insects.   The key to remember is no insect food source equals no spiders.

As a final precaution, seal any cracks that may lead indoors.  Pay close attention to your windows and doorways.  A sealed house is a spider free house.

Now, there are also some natural deterrents that you can use to make your home less inviting to spiders.  As with anything you are trying for the first time, you will want to test patch first in a small inconspicuous area of your home.  You do not want to ruin any surfaces or fabrics of your home.

Spraying your home’s entrances, window frames, and any cracks with certain essential oils deters spiders away.  These oils are best made with a measurement of 2 tsp of essential oils to 1 cup water.  Adding a few drops of dish detergent allows for a consistent solution so the essential oils just don’t sit on the top of the water.   Simply combine the three ingredients in a spray bottle, give it a nice hearty shake and spray away.

The essential oils that work best are:

oranOrange Essential Oil
Peppermint Essential Oil
Neem Oil
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Tea Tree Essential Oil

If you do not prefer the spray bottle method, you may want to use the mixture on a cotton ball.  Then, simply place the cotton ball in corners, crevices, or notorious spider hang outs of your home to deter spiders from taking in residence there.  Just remember to test first.

Best Ways to Center Candle Wicks

This entry was posted in candle wicking, candle wicks, candles, centered wick, creative, Fragrance Oils, hot scent throw, Natures Garden, self centered wicks and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .
wick center

We asked our Facebook Friends what creative ways they use to center their wicks for candle making. The responses were very effective, unique suggestions, many of which involved household items they had at their disposal.

Best Ways to Center Candle Wicks

Obviously at this point in your candle making, you have dedicated a lot of time and money learning, testing, and researching everything there is to know about making candles.  All this is accomplished by you with one end goal in mind… crafting the greatest candle you can!

For all the sacrifices made and devotion set forth in crafting candles, one thing is for sure; you do not want one simple little thing as an off centered wick to prevent you from that perfect candle.  In a candle, an improperly centered wick directly affects the burn, your melt pool, and your hot scent throw.  So, needless to say, ensuring that you have a centered wick should be a top priority.

There are many different options you have to center your wick.  Sure, you can buy a wick centering tool, wick bar, or self centering wicks, but since Natures Garden has such wonderfully talented customers, we thought we would ask them how they do it.  We turned to our Natures Garden Facebook Fans to share any input or suggestions that they had for centering candle wicks.  The responses were super creative, and many of their ideas had little to no cost.

The first step in centering your wick is to find the center.  Here are the awesome suggestions that we received on this topic:

Tips for finding the center:

Since many of the candle jars that are used are transparent, one customer suggests using a printed dart target to get that perfect bulls eye center each time with their wick tabs.  You will of course want to tape these bulls eyes to your work space so that they are consistent every time.  Then, it is just a matter of placing your jars on top to find the center.

Because most crafters have a continuous standard with their jar sizes, one of our customers traces the bottom of the jar onto cardstock.  Then, using a tape measure they calculate the exact center and mark it on the cardstock.  This cardstock then becomes a template for centering the wick each time that jar size is used.  The result is a perfectly centered wick.

So, now that you know where the center of your jars is.  The next step is securing your wick to the bottom.  Here are some of the great methods provided by our Fabulous Facebook Fans for this step:

Hot Glue Gun:  By placing a dap of hot glue in the center of the candle jar, and then gently pushing the wick tab over the glue before it hardens; you can secure your centered wick tab and pull the wick straight.

Glue Dots/ Sticky Wickums/ Sticky Tack:  The same concept as a hot glue gun, you simply remove the glue dot from the backing and place it on the bottom of the wick tab.  Then, press the wick tab in the center of the bottom of the candle jar and secure.  Pull the wick straight.

Empty Pen Tube/Drinking Straw:  Using an empty pen tube that the wick is threaded through you can press the tab right on the glue dot/hot glue at the bottom of the candle jars.  This is a great option for those of you who can’t necessarily reach the bottom of your jars to secure the tabs to the bottom.

Now, moving right along…let’s look at some of the suggestions given as to how to keep the wick portion of a candle straight once the hot wax is poured into the containers. In the picture we posted, you will notice that they used hair clips used by beauticians.  There are many more ideas where that came from.

On Natures Garden Common Candle Making Questions page we answered this with our suggestion.  “To prevent your wicks from falling over while the candle is cooling, we suggest you use hair combs.  Simply secure your wick in the bristles of the comb, and lay the comb on top of the container.”

Here are the other suggestions that we received:

Pencils:  Using a pencil wrap the excess wick around it and lay this across the opening of the candle jar.  This will keep the wick straight and tight while the wax is cooling.

Cardboard/Cardstock:  Using cardboard or cardstock to cut a thick “stick” that can lay across the top of your candle jar is a perfect solution to keeping your wick straight.  By making a small slit in the cardboard stick, you can easily slide your extra wick in place and hold it there.  Nicole Streeter even takes it a bit further by adding that she uses the cardstock with the slit in the middle but also writes the scent of each candle on the cardstock.  This is the perfect solution when doing multiple fragranced candles.

Chopsticks/Coffee Stirrers/ Popsicle sticks (aka craft sticks)/ Kabob Sticks (aka Bamboo Skewers):  This is essentially the same idea of the pencil with the excess wick wrapped around it.  But, how this differs is you use this method if you do not have a lot of excess wick available for wrapping.  By placing 2 of the same items together; secured at each end with rubber bands/strings/hemp, you are now able to simply slide the excess wick through the middle.  These items secured together will allow for a nice taunt hold of the wick.  With the popsicle sticks you also have the option of drilling a small hole into the center of your craft sticks with a dremel.  If there is any extra wick, this can be easily wrapped around the craft stick once it is secured through the hole.

Besides securing the two items together with stings or rubber bands, other helpful household items were also mentioned:

Aunti Di’s suggests using craft sticks secured with clothespins on the edges.  Another fabulous securing idea was the mini office binder clips, clipped at each end.  Even medical tape was suggested for keeping 2 pencils together.

If you use the smelly jelly jars, one of our customers suggests using the daisy perforated lid with a clothespin.  Once the wick is through the center hole, they just clip a clothespin on the excess wick to secure it in place.

For a more permanent tool, someone recommends using a wood shim with a clothespin hot glued to it.

If you are looking to satisfy a straight wick with several jars at one time, one customer suggests using a paint stirrer (which are free items if you ask for them).  Then, simply drill holes at the proper points on the stick.  Once your wick tab is centered and secured at the bottom of the jar, lay the paint stirrer across the top of the jars and just slip the wick through the holes.  You can usually accomplish 3 or more jars at one time (depending on the diameter of your containers).

We at Natures Garden would like to thank all of our wonderful customers for all of their unique ideas and input as to how they center their wicks and keep their wicks straight.  We hope that you have been inspired to try some of these ingenious ideas or maybe even spark new creations for centering wicks and keeping them straight of your own.

Passionate about Unique Soap Mixture

I love anything that has to do with bath and body products. From the time I could actually use them, there was not anything I did not want to try – I would save my money just to go and buy something. Then as I grew older, I tried making simple things. Perfume and fragrance is my life.  I started off making soap the MP way, then moved into HP. I found that no matter what I did, the HP was not moisturizing enough for me and all though the MP base was doing what I wanted, I couldn’t be as versatile with it. So, one day, I had a great thought – why not mix the two together and see what happens. And that is how my particular soap creation was born. I was able to add the fragrance & dyes to the MP base and then after both were ready to go, I would mix the bases together to create a wonderful soap! My soap has the texture of a HP soap with all the wonderful moisturizing effects of the goats milk MP base. It lathers up real nice, holds fragrance and keeps the skin moisturized after use. I love it!!! It sells out every time. And now everyone knows my secret – I hope everyone tries this at least once to see the difference it makes.

Beautiful Handmade Glycerin Soaps

This entry was posted in bath and body, bath products, creative, Fragrance Oils, handmade soap, Natures Garden, soap, soap fragrances and tagged , , , , , , , , , , on by .

fragrance oilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name: Teresa (Kathy) Rojas, Key West by Palms Soaps

I was raised in tropical Key West, Florida amongst many tropical fruits and beautiful colors and my soaps reflect these scents and colors.

Having always loved glycerin soaps and finding them getting horribly expensive I started creating them for myself.  I learned how to make handmade glycerin soap by researching online, joining groups and trial and error.  After my friends, family and co-workers kept asking me what I was wearing (it was my soap) or where did I get the beautiful soap in my bathroom and could I make some for them I started the process of correct labeling and packaging and started my business Key West by Palms Soaps.  Key West for where I was raised and Palms after our dog that we had recently lost to old age.

My soaps are created in small batches and with only the highest quality ingredients.  I produce something for everyone; men, women and children.  Key West by Palms Soaps also offers wedding/shower favors and wholesale orders.  Throughout each year we donate our product to many charitable contributions.

During the winter months you will find us all over South Florida at vendor events where customers can see and smell what we have to offer.

Our priorities are to provide beautiful, wonderfully smelling soaps that our clientele will be elated that they purchased from Key West by Palms Soaps.

Many of our bars are one of a kind in that once the loaf is sold we do not recreate the same thing over and over again.  Only a few of our bars are recreated and that is because of demand.  Custom requests are honored at no additional charge and are always welcomed.

We only purchase our fragrance oils from Nature’s Garden and would not shop anywhere else because of their quality and prices.

I only use Natures Garden fragrance oils – attaching a photo of your Juicy Couture Type fragrance oil.

Relax and Rejuvenate the Soul

This entry was posted in bath and body, bath products, bath salts, body spray, cosmetic ingredients, creative, Fragrance Oils, homemade, Natures Garden and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

fragrance oilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name:  Jennifer – Harmony Designs & Soaps

My slogan is: Relax & Rejuvenate the Soul.

I absolutely love creating.  It makes me feel such an accomplishment seeing the before and after. I love all the fragrance oils and love experimenting with them. Nature inspired my shop and my product design. A lot of my inspiration comes from nature. I am also a nature photographer and so much enjoy being outside and capturing nature’s beauty.

I lost my Dad to cancer in 2007 and he inspired me to do what I love to do. I know he would be very proud of me today.

I carry a variety of products in my Etsy shop, lip balms, body sprays, kanzashi hair flowers and bath salts just to name a few. I am always inspired to try new things. Sometimes they work out sometimes they don’t, I guess that’s called trial and error. Natures Garden carries so many products to help give you a kick start to create.

I came up with the name Harmony Designs because I thought about its meaning and it fit my shop perfectly.

Meaning: internal calm : balance, tranquility. I love that my shop name relays a tranquil feeling. The whole idea behind starting my shop was that I wanted to help people relax and have that “me” time that we all crave. We all have such busy lives and need that little bit of peace and quiet after a long day at work. My bath salts are wonderful for that reason. I use all my products myself and wouldn’t put anything out there that I didn’t wholeheartedly believe in. I love when people love my products. It makes me feel what I do is successful. Without my wonderful customers my shop wouldn’t exist.

Even when I was little I loved creating, painting and whatever else my little creative mind could get a hold on. I am pretty much a Jane of all trades. I do wear a lot of hats but wouldn’t want it any other way.  I love making favors for Weddings! I love being able to share in someones special moment. Just a side note my wedding is coming up in September and I am so excited! I know how it feels to want something special for your wedding so I take a lot of pride in making wedding favors.

Also when I was little I remember the lovely aromas coming from the kitchen when my parents were baking. I think that is one of the reasons I love my soy tart melts so much. I love all the dessert fragrances and it brings back those wonderful memories of my Dad making peach cobbler or my Mom baking. I love that my soy tart melts last and fill the house with so many wonderful Natures Garden Fragrances!

Natural Home Cleaning Products

This entry was posted in all natural, aromatherapy, creative, Fragrance Oils, herbs, Natures Garden, Natures Garden Essential Oils, wholesale supplies and tagged , , , , , , , , , , on by .

Wholesale Essential OilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name:  My name is Patti Page, owner of Aromatherapy Naturals-Natural Aromatherapy Home Cleaning Products.

Owning a cleaning service business for over 14 years and cleaning hundreds of homes, I know a lot about cleaning products. I know what cleans well and what doesn’t. Believe me I have tried dozens of cleaning products!

I have taken this experience and knowledge and developed a line of natural aromatherapy cleaning products that not only smell good, but are superior in performance as well.

Tested and Proven:  Aromatherapy Naturals Products were not created in a lab. They were created in a small rural town in Indiana by a Cleaning Service Owner with 14 years experience in the cleaning industry by fusing together the art of aromatherapy and the science of cleaning.

Making the Switch:  In 2006 after using harsh cleaning chemicals on a daily basis for years I decided to start using only natural cleaning products to clean our clients homes. I wanted a natural product that not only cleaned well, but would leave our clients homes with a pleasant scent. After extensive research I found a company that made Natural Cleaning Products using essential oils. I started purchasing the products from this company and using them in my cleaning service. That was when Aromatherapy House Cleaning was born!

Everything was going well and we continued to use the products from this company. Then the company I was purchasing the products from sold out to another company. The other company changed the formulas and scents and only offered a few products. I was not interested in purchasing the products from this company after they had changed the formulas and scents. By this time I had completely based my cleaning service on these products. I wasn’t sure what to do at this point since no one else sold this type of product. I tried other products but did not care for them.

After much consideration and prayer I took the leap of faith and decided to go forward and make a product line myself to use in my cleaning business. After countless hours of research and many nights spent working on the formulas and praying for God’s assistance to help with the formulas, Aromatherapy Naturals was conceived. I couldn’t have done it without the help of the Lord.

After using the natural aromatherapy products in my cleaning business, I started getting requests from cleaning companies who had visited my website and saw that I was using these products asking for information about purchasing the products we were using. In 2008 I started Aromatherapy Naturals and started selling the products to home owners and cleaning services all over the United States and Canada. Since then I have added several products to offer everything needed to clean homes naturally.

Every Order is Carefully Created by Hand:  Aromatherapy Naturals commitment to purity and quality goes as far as to guarantee that your products are not created until the time you place your order.

I use the Natural Vanilla Infusion from Nature’s Garden in 2 of my essential oil blends and I just love it. I only use pure essential oils in my blends and since there is no vanilla essential oil I wasn’t able to use vanilla in the blends until I found the Vanilla Infusion at Nature’s Garden. I now use the Vanilla Infusion to make a Lavender Vanilla Blend and also a Warm Orange Spice Blend. I also use Nature’s Garden Coconut Oil and Olive Oil.  I love the fact that the shipping is so fast at Nature’s Garden. I can place an order and it ships the same day or the next day at the latest.

Various Scented Bath Products

This entry was posted in bath and body, creative, Fragrance Oils, fun projects, handmade soap, homemade soap, lotion, Natures Garden Fragrance Oils and tagged , , , , , , , , , , on by .

fragrance oils1. What’s your name & Your Company Name:  My name is Amelia Ruth Thompson, owner & founder of Radical Works.

2. Why did you decide to go into business? What was your motivation? How long have you been in business?  I’ve been creating things literally my entire life. Over time, the things I would create would take up space; more space than I actually had. When in Spring 2009, a friend suggested, “Why don’t you sell things on Etsy?” So my original idea was simply to clear out space. I opened a shop, but nothing sold. In 2010, the same friend invited me to share a table with her at Louisianime II. There, I sold many of my crafts, with a lady suggesting I open a business to sell items all the time. So the following week, I opened a new shop, Radical Works. From there, I’ve added many difference types of products; as Radical Works is not limited to a single category. Having a shop has not only helped me maintain my crafts and organization, but it has also opened up my mind to many different types of crafts. I always try to include different types within other items.

3. What products do you make and sell?  Starting off, I had Radical Bears (teddy bears), magnets, and some leather-working items. In the more recent inventory, I have Radical Bears, hats, scarves, gloves, along with various bath products. This includes soap, bath salts, and perfumes. I’ve also made and sold bath bombs & lotions at a craft show.

4. What are your business goals?  I try to set short term goals for myself, as the long term goals can quickly change. But the main goal for my business is freedom through expression. Too many times I’ve been the “odd ball out” in most cases. With my business, it gives me the avenue and method to express myself to others, as well as have others find themselves within my products. It has always been a message in my business: “I never make anything I would like myself”.

5. What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  The main products I purchase from the awesome Natures Garden are their bases as well as their fragrances. The fragrances are what keep me coming back, and I love having the fragranced item with the purchases as well. I have a vase for the fragranced roses I’ve received over time.

Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  My mother (Kathy) and I started our business in 2008 and originally only sold botanical supplies. We experimented with using those botanicals in bath products and the rest is history. This month marks our 5th year in business and going strong!

What products do you make and sell?  We still sell a wide variety of botanicals along with bar soap, whipped soap, our signature Bubble Crumbles™ bubble bath, bath crystals, body mist, sugar scrub, whipped soap, lip “quenchies”, tub truffles, bath bombs and more! We’re always adding new products to our lineup to keep things interesting.

What are your business goals?  Primarily, we’ll be focusing on expanding our presence in retail stores. We’ve got a few other things in the works but we have to keep those secret – for now!

What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  The fragrance oils are fantastic and we especially love the lip balm base!
