Menthol Crystals

Monday, January 27th, 2014

menthol crystalsThe menthol crystals that Natures Garden carries are actually crystallized peppermint essential oil.  These crystals are 100% natural and have a variety of uses when introduced into your products.

Although menthol crystals can be made synthetically, when derived naturally they come from mint oils such as cornmint or peppermint.  Once the extraction occurs, the oil is immediately frozen (cold extraction) which forms the menthol crystals.  These crystals, which look similar to smaller oblong rock crystals, are solid at room temperature but have a melting point of around 107 degrees Fahrenheit.  These menthol crystals which are a white or clear crystalline substance are soluble in alcohol and propylene glycol and they are miscible in oils.

Menthol crystals have many uses.  They can be found in many industries such as oral hygiene, candies, pharmaceuticals, personal care, perfumery, and tobacco.  They naturally have a strong minty odor to them.  And, their usage percentage in a product can vary anywhere from .2% to 10% depending on the end product that is being formulated.

Menthol contains local anesthetic, antipruritic, analgesic, antispasmodic and anti irritant qualities.  The use of menthol in bath and body products can actually engage the cold sensitive receptors in our skin and provide a cooling sensation.  This same sensation can also occur from inhaling menthol as well as ingesting it.

menthol crystals in oral hygiene
Oral Hygiene:

In the realm of oral hygiene this ingredient is used not only for its refreshing flavor, but also to combat bad breath and can be used in mouthwash and toothpaste.

menthol crystals in gumFlavoring and Candies:
Menthol crystals are used to flavor many of our favorite go to minty pleasures.  It is used with the addition of anise to produce the tried and true flavor of licorice.  The crystals are used in peppermint and spearmint chewing gum for their refreshing and cooling feeling when chewed.  And, it is also even used in the production of many hard candies.

menthol crystal usesPharmaceuticals:
For slight throat irritations, menthol crystals can be used in items like cough medicines, cough drops, and throat lozenges.  The addition of this ingredient will cause a soothing and cooling sensation in the inflamed area.

Menthol crystals can be used to alleviate nausea, especially when the nausea is due to motion sickness.  This is because peppermint (which is used in making menthol crystals) is a natural carminative herb, meaning it can settle the digestive system.

Because menthol crystals have antipruritic and anti irritant qualities, they are great for anti itch creams and balms.

When it comes to chest congestion and upper respiratory issues; menthol can work as a decongestant.  The uses in this category for menthol crystals include: rubs, balms, or salves.  Inhaling the minty aroma of these crystals will also help to alleviate the blockages.

For an excellent fever reducer, menthol crystals can be made into wraps to be applied to the head or feet.  These wraps can also be made into balms or cooling gels.

menthol crystals in bath productsBath and Body: (Once made into a liquid form)

Menthol crystals are a great addition to lip balms.

Menthol crystals are a remarkable additive to lotions and creams for their analgesic property.  This provides temporary relief of minor aches and pains, as well as sprains in muscles.  Because menthol is antispasmodic, they can also help to reduce muscle cramping and muscle spasms.

Due of their amazing cooling, analgesic, and anesthetic properties, menthol crystals are extremely helpful in the treating of sunburns and razor burns.  The cooling sensation in gels and shaving balms simulates the feeling of ice providing some instant relief from the pain.  But, menthol can also penetrate deeply to numb the pain area temporarily.

Menthol crystals can even be used in deodorants, hair shampoos, and hair conditioners for their refreshing and cooling sensations.

Adding menthol crystals to soap recipes can enhance your soap for any of menthol’s benefits.  Just make sure the crystals are completely dissolved in the soaping oils and stirred well to reduce skin irritations.

menthol crystals in perfumes

Perfumery:
Menthol is even used in the perfumery industry.  When dealing with notes of floral, especially that of rose, perfumists will use menthol to produce menthyl esters.  These esters actually accentuate these delicate notes.

Tobacco:

Menthol crystals are used to flavor various tobacco items such as cigarette tobacco, pipe tobacco, and chewing tobacco.

The shelf life for these crystals is 2 years when stored accordingly.  However, areas with high humidity may experience the hardening and mass joining of these crystals into a solid lump.  This lump may be broken up by lightly hitting it with a mallet.  Also, areas with high levels of heat may melt the crystals.  Menthol crystals are best stored in a tight fitted glass, aluminum, or double lined container.  The crystals should be kept in a cool and dry area away from heat and direct sunlight.

Care should be taken when using menthol crystals in skincare products, as using too much may irritate the skin.

Natures Garden sells our menthol crystals for external applications only.  In the preceding post, we discussed how these wonderful crystals have many different uses in vast industries.  Nothing in this article is to be construed as medical advice.  Please consult your doctor before using any of this information for treatment purposes. We provide this data for educational purposes only.

The Handmade Industries

Saturday, November 30th, 2013

starter-kits copyOver the years, the home scenting as well as the bath and body industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry.  And, even better yet market analysis data report that these industries are still on the move.

When it comes to candles, chandeliers are using more than just paraffin waxes.  There has been an influx in quite a variety of waxes for candles including soy, gel, and other natural based waxes as well.  But, besides the array of candles available, many candle makers are marketing other products with their candles too.  Companies are creating complimentary scented products like incense, cosmetics, soaps, home scenting mediums, pet products, and even cleaning products to be sold with their candles.  The same statement can be made for soap makers.  Rather than just marketing bath and body products like soaps and scrubs, many soap makers are also making candles and tarts, room sprays, reed diffusers, and aroma beads in matching aromas too.  And, this super smart marketing strategy equates to higher sales and happier customers in the end.

The common denominator for success in both handmade industries is superior quality products that smell good.  We live in a world today where consumers are very aware of quality.  Because handmade products are far more superior to mass produced machine made products, consumers will seek out quality.  Even when it comes to the soaps that they use in their homes, shoppers are now realizing that going the handmade route with their purchase is the wisest choice.  Not only do natural soaps have a longer life in the shower, but also handmade soaps are healthier for your skin.

Besides the superior quality of handmade products, the good smell of your products also increases sales.  Consumers are spending more on products that smell good.  People want everything to have a good smell whether it is their homes, automobiles, clothing, or themselves; there is a huge niche for this.  Many perfumists in the industry realize this and are diligently working harder than ever to formulate scents that fulfill the unique wants and needs of the consumers spending habits.

Even when it comes to gift giving, many shoppers are going the homemade route instead.  Homemade gift baskets are becoming more and more popular because homemade gifts mean more to the recipient than store bought gifts.  Handmade products are sentimental.

If you are interested in making your own soaps, candles, cosmetics, or home scenting products for your small business or even just a gift basket, Natures Garden is here to help.  We are truly passionate about helping you turn your creative ideas into something beautiful in this exciting and prosperous industry.  Our informative and experienced staff can be reached by calling our HUG Line (1-866-647-2368) or you can contact us via email at info@naturesgardencandles.com.

Massage Candle Recipe

Tuesday, September 24th, 2013

josh1The Natures Garden facility is buzzing with excitement as the staff is anxiously awaiting for their turn in the Natures Garden staff challenge.  We are currently in week 7 and it is looking as if there is no end to the creativity.  For this staff challenge, each staff member was asked to create their very own recipe using their favorite Natures Garden fragrance oil.  This week the spotlight is on Josh, and his creation was a fabulous massage candle scented in his favorite fragrance oil NG Cashmere & Silk Type.

Josh has been with Natures Garden for many years.  He is our “go to guy” in the warehouse.  Josh is a gem to work with, and always offers a helping hand even when his own workload is full.  Although Josh can be quiet, he is generally jolly and is always in a good mood. A little known fact about Josh is that he is “besties” with Zack (last week’s beer candle contestant.)  They have been best friends ever since the seventh grade.

Josh is a single dad of two beautiful children; one little girl and one little boy.  When it comes to his spare time, Josh enjoys spending time with his kids.  For Josh, family comes first!  Josh’s daughter is very creative, so together they enjoy coloring and making art crafts such as bouncy balls and sand art kits.  When it comes to his son, active things are what they do together.  They like to play sports- baseball, football, ect, basically if it involves a ball they are playing it.massage-candle1

When Josh is able to sneak in some personal time, he enjoys being outdoors.  Josh is a big contender and is currently involved in a Corn Hole League.  He also loves cruising in his jeep with the top off, wind in his hair.  Josh especially loves the long days and heat of summer.  Josh is most happy when riding 4 wheelers, and his dream day spent outside ends with a huge bonfire surrounded by friends and family.

When asked what inspired Josh to want to make a massage candle, he responded, “When I smell NG Cashmere & Silk Type Fragrance Oil, I think of the ladies.  So, since I am single, who wants a massage first?”

Cosmetic Kit

Natures Garden offers several different cosmetic kits ranging from body butters, to conditioners, to lip balms. Each kit provides all of the ingredients and items you need to make you own cosmetics!

Where Can I Buy Cosmetic Supplies

As the natural market continues to grow, there are also more and more people out there who are opting to “make their own” household products and natural cosmetics.  While natural cosmetic companies continue to promote the idea of “natural” to their customers, some companies have finally picked up on the fact that most of these handcrafted, natural cosmetics actually benefit the skin much better than their store bought counterparts.  In fact, I am willing to place a bet that our natural hair conditioner recipe, and emulsified sugar scrub recipes will out perform any similar store bought versions.  My point is:  If you are not making your own cosmetics, or buying handcrafted cosmetics, you skin is really missing out on the fabulous benefits of these products.

When we use the term Cosmetics Supplies, we are referring to all of the ingredients needed to create cosmetics as defined according to the FDA (Federal Food & Drug Administration).  The FDA defines cosmetics according to the cosmetics intended use.  The term cosmetics refers to items that can be put on the body in various applications to promote attractiveness (example lotions), clean or cleanse (examples bath gel, shampoos, conditioners), and alter appearance (example make-up, ).  So, as you can see, contrary to common belief, cosmetic items contain quite an array of products.

Natures Garden Candle and Soap Supply carries a nice variety of ingredients to get you started in making your own homemade cosmetics.  We have cosmetic supplies including fragrance oils, emulsifying waxes, natural butters, cosmetic clays, herbs and spices, cosmetic colorants, and even preservatives to ensure your cosmetics will stay bacteria free.  Natures Garden even has unscented bases where you can use the base as is or scent and color it to you liking, adding your own personal touch.

Providing cosmetic making supplies to everyone; we have a vast array of customers including hobbyists and small business owners.  But, if you are still undecided and looking for a place to start, check out Natures Garden Cosmetic Kits.  These kits provide everything that you will need to create the cosmetic, and they make perfect gifts too.  However, if you already are into cosmetic making, Natures Garden has free cosmetic recipes and classes.  There you will find recipes to make cosmetics and great information in the classes.  One of our favorites recipes involves using herbs to color your cosmetics naturally.

If you are in the market for high quality cosmetic making supplies, Natures Garden is your go to wholesale priced supplier.

Creative Outlet Earning Extra Income

Monday, May 13th, 2013

fragrance oils1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  Lori Barrow, Windsor Hills Wicks & Lather

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I’m a stay-at-home mom and needed an outlet for my creativity that would earn extra income. I was working on the lines that I would carry for a candle and soap business when our daughter got sick in 2010.  At that time, I started taking a closer look at the products that I was bringing into my home. Thankfully, her illness wasn’t as severe as originally diagnosed and I opened my Etsy based business in 2011.  I’ve always loved candles, so I set out to start making stylish, high-quality candles that my friends and I would like and use.

 3.  What products do you make and sell?  My main product line includes my crafty soy candles (canning jar containers with decorative handcrafted covers), wax melts, wax luminaries, body butter, spa salts & nail polish. I rotate out other products such as incense, burlap wall art, glass luminaries, facial masks, smelly jellies, salves and children’s bubble bath.

 4.  What are your business goals?  I would like to grow my business from a home business to having a store front in our historic downtown that showcases locally made candles, soaps and crafts. We have a lot of insanely talented artisans in my area and I would love to own a shop that showcases them all, and offer the occasional class in crafting. I would also like to own a small manufacturing facility so that I could take on larger orders that I have had to previously turn down.  Every candle that I create is an investment in not only my future; it’s an investment in the future of my family and this town that I grew up in and think of so dearly. It might be a struggle to achieve my dream, but I’m in this for the long haul and I can’t wait until all of my friends and everyone in this town try my custom container candles.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  My favorite products from Nature’s Garden are the fragrance oils and essential oils. Egyptian Dragon is heavenly, it is my best seller! Vanilla Spectacular is one of my favorite scents. People who normally don’t care for vanilla love Vanilla Spectacular! Another of my favorites is “Cashmere & Silk,” because it is an incredible scent! The essential oils that I have bought from Nature’s Garden have been great, I really love the patchouli essential oil and tea tree essential oil.  In addition to the fragrance and essential oils, I love the variety of herbs and spices that you carry! Many of the body recipes that I make require the use of powdered herbs or spices and they are very expensive to buy locally. I’m very thankful that you carry the herbs and spices that I need. Your incense supplies are phenomenal!

Since I love arts, crafting and creativity I started creating gift baskets. With the high demand for bath & body products as the giftable items ideas started to spark. I decided to start creating my own line of bath & body products which started out with lotions and shower gels. I introduced my products to friends and family and was encouraged even more to pursue this as a part of my business. I’ve been in business since spring of 2012 and look forward to many, many years of creating!

How to Know Your Skin Type

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

skin-types1Are you facial complacent?

Let’s all face it (yes, this is a total pun!), in order to put our best foot forward each day, we want to look our best.  You have a direct effect on many things; the clothes your wear, the added accessories, the shoes and so on.  But, when it comes to our face, we are kind of stuck with the one we have.

Yes, it is true that we can use makeup to help aide our complexion in looking flawless and youthful.  Changes in our diets and drinking more water are also huge helpful additions as well.  Still, there are many herbal remedies that can nourish your face, and allow it to be the best face it can be.

The most important factor in facial skin care is to know which facial skin type that you have.  There are 5 different skin types.  They are: dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, normal skin, and combination skin.  It is possible that a person’s facial skin type can change during one’s life.  Any number of things can allow for this to happen; illness, age, stress, pregnancy, etc.  But, before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a quick look at each of the different types of facial skin in order to discover the best herbs to use in your facial regime.

Dry Skin Types:  The underlying problem with dry facial skin is due to the fact that there are inactive or underactive oil glands.  Because these oil glands do not produce the normal amount of sebum (oily secretion that keeps hair and skin supple), it creates skin that is not naturally lubricated as it should be by our own bodies.  Physical signs of having dry skin are usually a dull appearance.  The facial skin will feel dry to the touch, and may be even itchy at times.  Some of the things that people with dry skin can do to help with their situation is to drink plenty of water.  Externally, facial mists are a plus, as well as the addition of using very rich hydrating and moisturizing creams and lotions.

Oily Skin Types:  Oily skin is the exact opposite of dry skin types.  This skin type is caused by super active glands that produce too much sebum.  This results in skin that has a sleek or greasy feel.  Physically, oily facial skin is shiny.  The best time to notice this is at the mid-day point.  This is when the oil glands are at their peak in production.  The over active glands in oily skin even have the additional downfall of the usual large and clogged pores.  People with oily skin types are also very prone to non-inflammatory acne- due to the clogged pores.  This acne is caused from the sebum trapped inside the skin which then results in lesions that are pus filled.  These pus filled lesions are in the medical world referred to as comedones.  In simple terms, comedones are known to you and me as blackheads and whiteheads.  Also, oily facial skin is prone to breakout in inflammatory acne.  This type of acne includes pimples and cystic zits.  Cystic zits are deep, painful, inflamed blemishes that can be very large.  On a positive note, oily facial skin types generally have a more youthful and supple look to their facial appearance over all of the other skin types.  One thing that people with oily facial skin can benefit from is an occasional herbal steam treatment and herbal clay masks.

Sensitive Skin Types:  Sensitive skin is sometimes considered more of a skin condition rather than a skin type, but for informational purposes we are going to include this skin type.  Sensitive facial skin types are a special category for skin types because of the various conditions of skin that they include.  Sensitive skin can include dry, normal, or oily skin.  The reason why this facial skin type is special or sensitive is because the facial skin actually reacts unfavorably to both environmental conditions and common cleansing and moisturizing products.  The common cleansing and/or moisturizing products could include those that contain alcohol, synthetic oils, some essential oils, some fragrance oils, and artificial colors.  This skin type actually requires special caring treatments.  The best line of defense for aiding sensitive skin types are gentle, natural products, that also includes light steaming and some essential oils.

Normal Skin Types: For these lucky people, the oil glands actually produce the correct amount of sebum.  What this then develops to is a naturally balanced state between oily and dry skin.  The physical appearance of normal skin types is full, fresh, glowing face.  To yourself and others, you skin seems to reflect light evenly, almost giving your face a radiant glow.  Sure enough too, people who have normal skin types rarely suffer from breakouts.  However, please do not be fooled!  Even though the normal facial skin types seems to have it all, that does not necessarily mean that normal facial skin people have any less work to do in keeping their faces flawless.  In order to keep normal skin types faces happy and content, regular cleansing, toning, and moisturizing steps still need to be carried out in a habitual regime.

Combination Skin Types:  This facial skin type is the most common group that the majority of us fall into.  Basically, as I am sure you have already figured out by the name of this group, the combination skin type people are the ones with at least two different skin types at any time.  Physically, combination facial skin types will be quite aware of their T-zone.  The T-zone is the area of the forehead, nose, and chin.  Basically, this makes a T on the face.  This zone is generally oily, or may even be prone to break outs.  The rest of the face (the checks, eye area, temples, and mouth region) are either dry or normal skin types.  Another tell tale sign that you have combination facial skin is if your face reacts to the weather and/or climate changes.  What this means is that for some of the year your face is super oily, and for other times of the year it is dry as a bone.  For this group of people, facial treatments will range.  Due to the varying combinations the facial skin types are among the combination facial skin type group, it is extremely important to evaluate which skin types you have and treat them separately.  Of course, in the dry areas of the face, you would treat as such; the oily (or T-zone) area would be treated correspondingly; etc.

All right folks, it is time to listen/read up!  I know you all are probably just like me, chalking ourselves up into the normal facial skin type, but the truth is, the best way to allow the most beautiful face to come forward is to know which facial skin type you are and treat it as such.

So now, I bet you are wondering, “All of this information is great, but how do I really know which category my face is in?”  Don’t worry; it is common place for the majority of people not to know which skin type they are.  In fact, many women incorrectly gauge their skin type which results in improper products and facial treatment usages.  When the wrong facial care treatments are used, the possible consequences are irritation, acne, and can even add to the aging of your facial skin (hello wrinkles, I didn’t have you scheduled a few more years!).

Okay, I know that the last paragraph is a little scary, but, get ready and hold on to your seats, we have already researched this and we have found a trick to help you discover which group your face falls into.

There are two steps for every facial type that stay consistent across the board.  They are:

1.  You must get your Beauty Sleep!  Obviously this sleep was named correctly for the right reasons.  Night time is the best time to pamper your face.  Why you ask, well I’ve got two answers for you.  First, even though you are sleeping your body is still hard at work.  During the night, your skin rejuvenates itself.  This makes it a prime time to treat your face with skin loving nutrients.  Secondly, many of the super nutrient ingredients that are in skin care products are just like vampires in the sunlight.  These ingredients are broken down by the sun rays and are not as potent therefore making facial treatment regimes not as effective.

2.  Water, water, and more water:  Could I say that one more time, yes- water is one of the best things that we can provide our bodies.  Not only is water natures secret key for keeping our bodies hydrated and functioning properly, but it also helps keep our skin supple and fresh.

Now, onward to discovering which skin type you have.

The first step is to wash your face with a gentle cleanser.  Pat your face dry.  You do not have to scrub it down or over wash.  You are just looking to remove any makeup, dirt, and grime from your pores, essentially giving your face a fresh starting place.

The second step is to wait.  The magical time is one hour.  During this period, your skin will return to its natural state.  This is the key step in determining which facial skin type you have.  It is very important that during this wait time you do not touch your face.

The third step:  After an hour has elapsed, you will need a tissue to test with.  It is very important that while you are dabbing the different areas of the face, you are also consecutively using different areas of the tissue.  The area breakdown is as follows:  The T-zone of the forehead and nose, the chin, cheeks, outer cheeks, and the outer forehead along the hairline.  Remember to use a different area of the tissue for each of the different areas of the face!

The fourth step:  Assessment and Determination time.

You have a normal skin type- if you show little to no oil or flaking on the tissue.  You face will also feel very smooth and supple.  Your facial pores are visible, on the smaller end but not large.
You have an oily skin type- if your tissue has a lot of grease (or oil) on it.  You may also have flakiness or patches of flakiness on your face, especially around your nose and T area of the forehead.  Your facial pores will be large.
You have a dry skin type- if your tissue has flakes on it.  Also, your face will feel very tight.  Your facial pores will be small.
You have a combination skin type- if your tissue is showing oil on the T-zone areas.  All of the other areas that you dabbed do not show oil.  Combination skin also applies to the tissues that show oil on the areas of chin, temples, and jaw line, but does not show oil in the T-zone.  It is common for within this group to have an oily T-zone, with dryness on the cheek area.
You have a sensitive skin type- if your tissue has no oil on it.  However, what differentiates you from dry facial skin is the tell tale sign that you have irritation or red blotches on your face.  It is actually the broken capillaries and vessels (causing the redness) that are located underneath the facial skin that denotes this skin type.  Your face may even feel dry and itchy.

Now that you have the information to discover which facial skin type you are; we are hard at work researching various facial recipes for each skin type category.  Be on the lookout for our future blog post were we will discuss different avenues of facial skin caring and what proactive steps you can take to always put your best face forward.
