baking sodaBaking Soda

Hello everyone! How often do you use baking soda in your every day life? Or maybe it’s something that you always have around the house but you really have no idea what it is ever used for? Well, I’m here to tell you all about it! You will definitely be amazed at all the different uses you didn’t know it had! After reading this, I’m sure you’ll be intrigued enough to try out some of these awesome ideas with baking soda for yourself!

I’m sure we all know and think of baking soda just as a part of the bread making process. Or maybe if you’ve worked in restaurants like I have, you associate it as almost a fire extinguisher. Like if something catches fire on the stove or grill, if you pour baking soda on it, puts the fire out. Or even the toothpaste commercials when people talk about that they or their loved ones used baking soda for toothpaste. But that’s not all this wonderful product can do! Did you know baking soda can be used in bath and body products as well? It can be used in bath bombs recipes and when used as a hair rinse, it will make your hair soft and silky. And it gets even better! When you use baking soda to add a little something extra to your bath time, it helps to soften the skin and give it a lovely silky feeling! Even the cosmetic industry uses baking soda! Cleaning formulas and cosmetic formulations use it to help lift dirt and remove oils.

You can even make your very own baking soda laundry detergents and dish soaps when you combine it with citric acid and soap! There are many other cleaning products that use baking soda as well. Cloth diapers can be cleaned with a mixture of baking soda and water. It can remove grease stains and oils, clean cars, corroded batteries, ovens, microwaves, vinyl shower curtains, and it can even remove marks on walls. Baking soda also has deodorizing qualities! It can be used as a replacement for deodorant, deodorize pet bedding, cars, closets, refrigerators, shoes, cutting boards, dishwashers, garbage disposals, trash cans and even stuffed animals just to name a few.

There are many medicinal benefits to baking soda as well! It can help slow kidney failure and there is a theory that it can be used to fight cancer. It is also used to treat indigestion and heartburn, it can also be used when removing splinters and for allergic reactions to poison ivy, sumac, and oak. For oral health, baking soda is used as an ingredient in toothpastes to help remove plaque from the teeth. Soaking your feet in baking soda can treat foot fungus and odors. Athletes also can use baking soda to keep them from getting tired during a game and it helps to enhance their performance.

Those are just a few of the many ways to use baking soda! Aren’t you just dying to try some of them out now? One of my favorite and most interesting uses to me though, is a recipe we came across on Pinterest. For getting scuff marks off of vinyl and suede shoes. Using baking soda in the recipe! Did you know that baking soda can also be used to help keep septic systems clean? Hold on though, if you are need of the actual product itself, we have it right here at Nature’s Garden! Just type “baking soda” into the search bar on our site and it will take you right to it! These ideas are something you just can’t pass up! Check out some of our free recipes and classes too and our baking soda class! And keep watching for more Enlightened by Layla!

Natures Garden StoreNatures Garden Store

Marsha and the staff at Natures Garden have been feverously working away at getting the store ready and in tip top shape.

Earlier this year, we started the intense planning and implementing of a store for our wonderful customers to come into and shop.  This was a feat that was easier said than done.  Through months of planning and strategizing, we were able to create a beautiful store on paper that believe it or not contained every item that Natures Garden currently carries.

Then came the week when all of storage and shelving units were put together.  This also included an electrician, a painter, and a small construction crew.  When they were finished, for the first time we were able to see the Natures Garden store becoming a reality.

Next, it was time to stock shelves.  This is where we are now.   Through immense hard work and dedication, the staff at Natures Garden has been steadily plugging away at stocking, pricing, and creating displays for the store.  And, now after all of this time, we are finally beginning to see light at the end of the store tunnel.

Although the store is still a work in progress so to say, we are getting very close.

Sure, all of Natures Garden products are out and available for purchase; but we are still finalizing some aspects to really knock it out of the park!

The Natures Garden store is currently open and you all are more than welcome to come in and visit.  We still have the fragrance sniffing wall (although it is more of a Fragrance Land), as well as 16 oz, 8 oz, 4 oz, and 1 oz fragrance bottles available to purchase.  All of our soap bases, waxes, butters, oils, molds, and herbs are also out and ready for purchase as well.  We even have our vast array of kits, colorants, flavorings, and essential oils out too and they are all ready for their new crafting home.

One thing is for sure, if you come visit the Natures Garden store, you will not be disappointed.  Just please bear with us as we strive for perfection.

cindy ohio soapers gatheringHello everyone!

Well I made it through my first ever Ohio Soapers Gathering! I have to say, it was great to meet the people who love soaping as much as we do. They are a fantastic group of individuals. I was however a bit nervous being my first gathering, but, upon my arrival the coordinator of the gathering, Jackie Harris greeted me with such warmth how could I not feel welcomed? She was just so thrilled we were able to attend, what a lovely lady she is. I set up my tables and waited for the event to begin. Every one of my booth visitors were just as excited as ever that we had attended the gathering for the day with some of our products. So much so that even those who preordered, bought more stuff while I was there. There was no stopping them!

Our Facebook followers told me how excited they were about the opening of our store and that the pictures were amazing! I told them the pictures don’t do it justice and that they will just have to come down in person. They fully and enthusiastically agreed, saying a road trip is definitely in the near future. Several of my customers that had already been there, raved to the others standing nearby.

Throughout the event there were informative demonstrators. Bobbie Eastman with hair shine, Kim Craig with handmade cream, Kristy Schemrich with laundry soap, and a few others. I am glad they held these demos in the same room, otherwise I would have missed out. Even though I could never get away from the table due to my fabulous customers, I could still hear and gather information from the demos. I even got a few samples!

They had a “garage sale” table which I thought was cute (I should have brought my stuff of odds and ends to sell). These were things the donators couldn’t use anymore but knew someone else could. Then there was a table called the “swap table.” You donate stuff you made, up to 5 things and you received as many in return. How fun is that? I can only imagine what kind of things were made by these amazing crafters. Everyone was so creative, I was in awe!

The door prizes were great too, there was everything from Tickets to Kalahari Water Park, gift certificates, several soaping products, and of course Natures Garden shopping bags and Tshirts! All of the winners were so happy to come away from the gathering with new knowledge, new products, winnings, and a full belly. All in all I believe it was a great success for everyone all around.

natures garden winners
I can’t wait for the next one because I will get to meet a whole new realm of awesome people. Their creativity inspires me and it’s good to know there are people out there using their knowledge for things that are good and can offer information that will help others. Whether it is to teach them, save them money, or inspire THEIR creative juices, soaping is a great artistic field to venture into. The avenues are endless…seriously!

So my friends, if you have never been to a gathering, go! If you know someone who makes soap, learn! If you don’t personally know somebody, come out to our website at naturesgardencandles.com and look at our blogs, show and tells, all of our free recipes, or, check out our starter kits. It may seem intimidating but know we are always here to help…always!

Although I had a blast in Sandusky at the Ohio Soapers Gathering, I was past exhausted! It was a good exhaustion and I came away from it with more then I went there with…I am glad I was a part of it.

Well kids until the adventure, have a fabulous day!

Menthol Crystals

menthol crystalsThe menthol crystals that Natures Garden carries are actually crystallized peppermint essential oil.  These crystals are 100% natural and have a variety of uses when introduced into your products.

Although menthol crystals can be made synthetically, when derived naturally they come from mint oils such as cornmint or peppermint.  Once the extraction occurs, the oil is immediately frozen (cold extraction) which forms the menthol crystals.  These crystals, which look similar to smaller oblong rock crystals, are solid at room temperature but have a melting point of around 107 degrees Fahrenheit.  These menthol crystals which are a white or clear crystalline substance are soluble in alcohol and propylene glycol and they are miscible in oils.

Menthol crystals have many uses.  They can be found in many industries such as oral hygiene, candies, pharmaceuticals, personal care, perfumery, and tobacco.  They naturally have a strong minty odor to them.  And, their usage percentage in a product can vary anywhere from .2% to 10% depending on the end product that is being formulated.

Menthol contains local anesthetic, antipruritic, analgesic, antispasmodic and anti irritant qualities.  The use of menthol in bath and body products can actually engage the cold sensitive receptors in our skin and provide a cooling sensation.  This same sensation can also occur from inhaling menthol as well as ingesting it.

menthol crystals in oral hygiene
Oral Hygiene:

In the realm of oral hygiene this ingredient is used not only for its refreshing flavor, but also to combat bad breath and can be used in mouthwash and toothpaste.

menthol crystals in gumFlavoring and Candies:
Menthol crystals are used to flavor many of our favorite go to minty pleasures.  It is used with the addition of anise to produce the tried and true flavor of licorice.  The crystals are used in peppermint and spearmint chewing gum for their refreshing and cooling feeling when chewed.  And, it is also even used in the production of many hard candies.

menthol crystal usesPharmaceuticals:
For slight throat irritations, menthol crystals can be used in items like cough medicines, cough drops, and throat lozenges.  The addition of this ingredient will cause a soothing and cooling sensation in the inflamed area.

Menthol crystals can be used to alleviate nausea, especially when the nausea is due to motion sickness.  This is because peppermint (which is used in making menthol crystals) is a natural carminative herb, meaning it can settle the digestive system.

Because menthol crystals have antipruritic and anti irritant qualities, they are great for anti itch creams and balms.

When it comes to chest congestion and upper respiratory issues; menthol can work as a decongestant.  The uses in this category for menthol crystals include: rubs, balms, or salves.  Inhaling the minty aroma of these crystals will also help to alleviate the blockages.

For an excellent fever reducer, menthol crystals can be made into wraps to be applied to the head or feet.  These wraps can also be made into balms or cooling gels.

menthol crystals in bath productsBath and Body: (Once made into a liquid form)

Menthol crystals are a great addition to lip balms.

Menthol crystals are a remarkable additive to lotions and creams for their analgesic property.  This provides temporary relief of minor aches and pains, as well as sprains in muscles.  Because menthol is antispasmodic, they can also help to reduce muscle cramping and muscle spasms.

Due of their amazing cooling, analgesic, and anesthetic properties, menthol crystals are extremely helpful in the treating of sunburns and razor burns.  The cooling sensation in gels and shaving balms simulates the feeling of ice providing some instant relief from the pain.  But, menthol can also penetrate deeply to numb the pain area temporarily.

Menthol crystals can even be used in deodorants, hair shampoos, and hair conditioners for their refreshing and cooling sensations.

Adding menthol crystals to soap recipes can enhance your soap for any of menthol’s benefits.  Just make sure the crystals are completely dissolved in the soaping oils and stirred well to reduce skin irritations.

menthol crystals in perfumes

Perfumery:
Menthol is even used in the perfumery industry.  When dealing with notes of floral, especially that of rose, perfumists will use menthol to produce menthyl esters.  These esters actually accentuate these delicate notes.

Tobacco:

Menthol crystals are used to flavor various tobacco items such as cigarette tobacco, pipe tobacco, and chewing tobacco.

The shelf life for these crystals is 2 years when stored accordingly.  However, areas with high humidity may experience the hardening and mass joining of these crystals into a solid lump.  This lump may be broken up by lightly hitting it with a mallet.  Also, areas with high levels of heat may melt the crystals.  Menthol crystals are best stored in a tight fitted glass, aluminum, or double lined container.  The crystals should be kept in a cool and dry area away from heat and direct sunlight.

Care should be taken when using menthol crystals in skincare products, as using too much may irritate the skin.

Natures Garden sells our menthol crystals for external applications only.  In the preceding post, we discussed how these wonderful crystals have many different uses in vast industries.  Nothing in this article is to be construed as medical advice.  Please consult your doctor before using any of this information for treatment purposes. We provide this data for educational purposes only.

The Handmade Industries

This entry was posted in bath and body, bath products, candle making supplies, cosmetic supplies, Fragrance Oils, Natures Garden, Soap making supplies and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

starter-kits copyOver the years, the home scenting as well as the bath and body industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry.  And, even better yet market analysis data report that these industries are still on the move.

When it comes to candles, chandeliers are using more than just paraffin waxes.  There has been an influx in quite a variety of waxes for candles including soy, gel, and other natural based waxes as well.  But, besides the array of candles available, many candle makers are marketing other products with their candles too.  Companies are creating complimentary scented products like incense, cosmetics, soaps, home scenting mediums, pet products, and even cleaning products to be sold with their candles.  The same statement can be made for soap makers.  Rather than just marketing bath and body products like soaps and scrubs, many soap makers are also making candles and tarts, room sprays, reed diffusers, and aroma beads in matching aromas too.  And, this super smart marketing strategy equates to higher sales and happier customers in the end.

The common denominator for success in both handmade industries is superior quality products that smell good.  We live in a world today where consumers are very aware of quality.  Because handmade products are far more superior to mass produced machine made products, consumers will seek out quality.  Even when it comes to the soaps that they use in their homes, shoppers are now realizing that going the handmade route with their purchase is the wisest choice.  Not only do natural soaps have a longer life in the shower, but also handmade soaps are healthier for your skin.

Besides the superior quality of handmade products, the good smell of your products also increases sales.  Consumers are spending more on products that smell good.  People want everything to have a good smell whether it is their homes, automobiles, clothing, or themselves; there is a huge niche for this.  Many perfumists in the industry realize this and are diligently working harder than ever to formulate scents that fulfill the unique wants and needs of the consumers spending habits.

Even when it comes to gift giving, many shoppers are going the homemade route instead.  Homemade gift baskets are becoming more and more popular because homemade gifts mean more to the recipient than store bought gifts.  Handmade products are sentimental.

If you are interested in making your own soaps, candles, cosmetics, or home scenting products for your small business or even just a gift basket, Natures Garden is here to help.  We are truly passionate about helping you turn your creative ideas into something beautiful in this exciting and prosperous industry.  Our informative and experienced staff can be reached by calling our HUG Line (1-866-647-2368) or you can contact us via email at info@naturesgardencandles.com.

Massage Candle Recipe

josh1The Natures Garden facility is buzzing with excitement as the staff is anxiously awaiting for their turn in the Natures Garden staff challenge.  We are currently in week 7 and it is looking as if there is no end to the creativity.  For this staff challenge, each staff member was asked to create their very own recipe using their favorite Natures Garden fragrance oil.  This week the spotlight is on Josh, and his creation was a fabulous massage candle scented in his favorite fragrance oil NG Cashmere & Silk Type.

Josh has been with Natures Garden for many years.  He is our “go to guy” in the warehouse.  Josh is a gem to work with, and always offers a helping hand even when his own workload is full.  Although Josh can be quiet, he is generally jolly and is always in a good mood. A little known fact about Josh is that he is “besties” with Zack (last week’s beer candle contestant.)  They have been best friends ever since the seventh grade.

Josh is a single dad of two beautiful children; one little girl and one little boy.  When it comes to his spare time, Josh enjoys spending time with his kids.  For Josh, family comes first!  Josh’s daughter is very creative, so together they enjoy coloring and making art crafts such as bouncy balls and sand art kits.  When it comes to his son, active things are what they do together.  They like to play sports- baseball, football, ect, basically if it involves a ball they are playing it.massage-candle1

When Josh is able to sneak in some personal time, he enjoys being outdoors.  Josh is a big contender and is currently involved in a Corn Hole League.  He also loves cruising in his jeep with the top off, wind in his hair.  Josh especially loves the long days and heat of summer.  Josh is most happy when riding 4 wheelers, and his dream day spent outside ends with a huge bonfire surrounded by friends and family.

When asked what inspired Josh to want to make a massage candle, he responded, “When I smell NG Cashmere & Silk Type Fragrance Oil, I think of the ladies.  So, since I am single, who wants a massage first?”

To make your very own massage candle, please check out Natures Garden’s Massage Candle Recipe available in Natures Garden’s Free Recipes and Classes area.
