How Do I Naturally Color Soap? How Do I Naturally Color Soap?

Many people are curious about how they can color their homemade soaps naturally. Of course, there are vibrant soap pigments and dyes, but what are my options for coloring soap? More importantly for all natural soap makers, How Do I Naturally Color Soap? Well, its simple, just use some cosmetic herbs. While not every herb is pigmented, there are many herbs out there that can be used to provide some wonderful colors. Plus, many herbs come with some added benefits for the body. So, Natures Garden has compiled a short natural soap colorants list that can be handy for the average soap maker.

How Do I Naturally Color Soap?: How Do You Add Herbs To Soap

Since herbs are a great way to naturally color your homemade soaps, you will want to know the ways that you can incorporate them into your recipes. Depending on the form that they come in, there are a few methods you may want to know. First, we have the easiest herb in incorporate, which is powdered herbs. The powder can simply be added to the recipe either before the CP soap reaches trace or before pouring your MP soap. Also, you can add the herb to vegetable glycerin to break up chunks before adding it, but this isn’t always necessary.

Next, we have the whole herbs, which include things like flower petals or cinnamon sticks. While there are instances where you want to add whole herbs to your soap, you don’t need this for coloring. So, these herbs can either be added in tea form or an oil infusion. For the tea all you need to do is steep your herbs in hot water to create a tea and use this as the water portion of your recipe. If you aren’t using water in your recipe, then you will want to do an oil infusion. So, you will need to create an herb oil by either allowing your herbs to soak in one of your oils for 4-6 weeks or add them to the pot as you oils melt. After, you will just need to strain out the herbs.

Another color that you can create naturally with herbs is black. Adding Activated Charcoal Powder is a sure way to get a pure black color in your homemade soaps. Not only will you get a fantastic color, but this cosmetic ingredient is wonderfully cleansing. Activated Charcoal is an adsorbent, which means that it is able to hold onto molecules and trap them on the surface. So, when you wash off the activated charcoal the grime goes along with it. Further, it has the power to pull dirt and oil both off your skin and out of your pores. Overall, this makes activated charcoal a powerful cosmetic ingredient that you will adore for soap-making.

We included this cleansing cosmetic herb in our own homemade soap recipes. First, we incorporated activated charcoal into the Activated Charcoal Soap Recipe. The herb enhances this soap to create an even deeper cleansing soap. Plus, the MP soap bars have a stunning jet black layer that works perfectly with the poppy seeds in the clear layer. Such a fun and natural homemade soap!

Also, we included this fantastic colorant in our Total Hot Man CP Soap Recipe. While the red is a soap pigment, the black portion of the bar is all thanks to activated charcoal. So, you can tell that this herb works great in both CP soap and MP soap. Plus, this gorgeous bar of soap will maintain the powerful cleaning properties of activated charcoal. So, this bar of soap is great all around!

Also, you can use herbs to provide your soaps with a natural green color! Many herbs that come from plants containing chlorophyll will do the trick, but here are a few that we like to use in soaps. First, we have Parsley Leaf Powder. Not only does this herb provide a nice, earthy green color, but it will perfectly nourish your skin with nutrients. Also, you can use Green Tea Powder in any soaps to create a nice green color. Plus, this lovely herb will provide gentle exfoliation to the skin along with beneficial antioxidant properties. Either would be perfect for making some homemade soaps!

How Do I Naturally Color Soap?: How to Color Soap Blue or Purple

While many other herbs can be used to naturally color any bath and body product, the Alkanet Root is for cold process soap only. This means that you, unfortunately, won’t be able to use this to make natural purple MP soap. However, you can create some pretty gorgeous and natural cold process soaps! We at Natures Garden don’t carry this particular herb, but we still thought it was a great one to mention since it can provide a pretty purple color. Also, this can be used in differing amounts to provide a pink or even a blue color!

Turmeric, or Curcuma longa, comes from the rhizomes (or roots) of a herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family. It is native to India and Southeast Asia.  In Asia, turmeric is known as “manjal” or even “kasturi manjal”. Much like its cousin the ginger root, Turmeric can be grated and used fresh. Turmeric rhizomes, when not used fresh, will be boiled in water, dried in hot ovens, and then they are ground into the powder that we are all familiar with.

This perennial plants can grow up to over 3 feet tall. It has cylinder-type roots that range in color from yellow to orange. Heavy branches grow up from the roots.

Like stated above, Turmeric is most well know for its culinary uses, however, this versatile herb has many more uses and benefits. Turmeric is very popular in the medical field. In fact, Turmeric has been used in medicine for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurveda or Siddha (Indian traditional medicine). This powerful herb is used to treat problems such as, indigestion, throat infections, common colds, or liver ailments. Turmeric can also be used topically to cleanse wounds or treat skin sores. There are many other conditions that can be treated using turmeric. Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and water retention are a few. Turmeric can even benefit the heart by lowering bad cholesterol and blood sugar.

For women, turmeric does work to help with menstrual problems and water retention. Also, this powder has many antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties actually work to reduce brain inflation, which is believed to be the main cause of Alzheimer’s Disease. So, essentially, turmeric can work to delay the onset of this horrible disease.

So you see, this bright, yellow orange colored powder is incredibly versatile in any type of form. Let’s now move onto our recipe!

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Ingredients that Nature’s Garden has to offer

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Other Ingredients and Equipment You Will Need

  • Mixing Bowls (you will need one)
  • Scale
  • Mixing Spoons

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Total Recipe Weights

  • 96 grams Turmeric Powder
  • 224 grams Bentonite Clay Powder
  • 24 drops Vitamin E Oil
  • 96 grams Vegetable Glycerin

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Weigh Out the Turmeric PowderTurmeric Face Mask Recipe: Weigh Out the Turmeric Powder

So let’s begin now with our turmeric face mask! First, we are going to start with the turmeric powder. So, get your scale out. You will also be using a medium sized bowl. Have your scale tared out. Then, go ahead and weigh out 96 grams of your turmeric powder.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Weigh Out the Bentonite Clay PowderTurmeric Face Mask Recipe: Weigh Out the Bentonite Clay Powder

First, let’s talk about Bentonite Clay Powder. Bentonite is a wonderful addition to any face mask! This type of clay, when used in face masks, helps clean impurities from the skin. When used in soaps, bentonite is good at treating oily skin. Also, when used in bath bombs, it helps harden them. In addition, bentonite is useful in thickening lotions.

So, now we are going to weigh out the bentonite. You will add the clay to the same bowl you have your turmeric powder in. Tare out your scale and to the medium bowl, add 224 grams of bentonite clay. Next, mix the two ingredients together until everything seems evenly dispersed.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Add the Vitamin E OilTurmeric Face Mask Recipe: Add the Vitamin E Oil

The next ingredient we will be adding is Vitamin E. Vitamin E from Nature’s Garden comes in the purest form, is also known as Tocepherol T-50. This is not tocopherol acetate (the form found in many vitamin E capsules).   Vitamin E is a wonderful antioxidant and is fabulous for your skin.

So, to the bowl containing the powdered ingredients, you will be adding your Vitamin E oil. Using a disposable pipette you will add 24 drops of the Vitamin E oil right on top of the powder. Finally, use a spoon or spatula to mix the ingredients together.

Turmeric Face Mask recipe: Packaging your Facial MaskTurmeric Face Mask recipe: Packaging your Facial Mask

For this recipe, we decided to package the powder portion of the face mask and the vegetable glycerin separately. We chose to create the facial mask recipe this way for a couple of reasons. First, creating the facial mask mixture separately without the water you will not need to add a preservative. In addition, you will be able to prepare a quick product for your customers. This recipe can be made in just a few minutes. Each 2 ounce jar will create approximately 4 facial masks.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: The Powdered Portion

Now that your powdered portion is complete, you can begin packaging this portion of the facial mask. So, using a spoon, fill each of your 2 ounce white double wall jars and place a lid on each jar.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: The Liquid PortionTurmeric Face Mask Recipe: The Liquid Portion

The next part of our recipe is the vegetable glycerin. Vegetable Glycerin is a humectant, meaning, it draws moisture to your skin. So by adding vegetable glycerin to this recipe, your skin will be left feeling soft and hydrated.

Next,we will prepare the liquid portion of the facial mask. Water, while it is an ingredient in the recipe, will not be used until you are ready mix and apply the face mask. So, we will prepare eight 1/2 ounce bottles for the vegetable glycerin. To each bottle, add 12 grams of the vegetable glycerin and cap them with the white ribbed lids.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Using Your Facial Mask

As we talked about previously, by mixing this mask on an as needed basis, it will prolong the shelf life and can be made quickly when needed. With that being said, let’s talk about using the mask. It is really a simple process. Also, if you are selling this mask as a product, you can sell the jar and bottle as a set and label it with instructions.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Mixing Your Facial MaskTurmeric Face Mask Recipe: Mixing Your Facial Mask

Finally, you are ready to use your face mask! You will need one of your jars of powder and a bottle of the vegetable glycerin. Lastly, you will need a small mixing bowl. Starting with the powdered mixture. First, to the small bowl, add about 1 Tablespoon of the powder. Next, you will add about 1/2 teaspoon of the vegetable glycerin to the powder. Finally, you will add 2 Tablespoons of distilled water. Mix this together thoroughly.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe: Applying your Facial Mask

Once your ingredients are mixed together nicely, apply a thin layer to your face and kick back and relax for a few. Once the mask has hardened, you can rinse your face off in warm water and see how soft and glowing your skin looks and feels!

Turmeric Face Mask: In Conclusion

As always, Nature’s Garden is here to help keep you beautiful as naturally as possible. So we insist that you treat yourself! Apply a mask, relax with a turmeric hot toddy, a magazine and some quiet music. Let your cares go for a while and allow the turmeric face mask do its job!

Turmeric RecipesTurmeric Recipes

Well, we now know the benefits we can get from turmeric powder on our face. So, how about we take a look at some recipes that we can eat! Just follow this link to Allrecipes.com to see just how many types of dishes turmeric is used in.  There are literally hundreds of recipes that incorporate turmeric in them.  One very popular and well-known way to use turmeric is always curry! Curry is actually not a dish as some people think, but a mixture of many different spices and herbs, turmeric being one of them. The use of the term “curry” is generally limited to dishes prepared in a sauce that is made with the mixture of spices.

Using turmeric in recipes isn’t strictly for savory dishes. Sfoof is a traditional Lebanese dessert cake that uses turmeric. There are also smoothie recipes that use turmeric in them and even in hot drinks that are soothing to your soul.  So as you can see, this spice can be added to any type of recipe, internationally or just in your simple everyday drinks! Some people add it for the taste or color, and there are some people that like the idea of using a natural herb in their diet.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe

Our next recipe from Natures Garden is a bubbling bath salts recipe.  With St. Patty’s Day right around the corner, we really thought you would enjoy this recipe.  We’ve scented it with Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil and added a couple different types of cosmetic salts.  In addition, we added some fun layers to give our layered bath salts some added interest.  Finally, we’ve added sodium cocoyl isethionate, which just happens to be my absolute favorite ingredients.  If you have tried adding it to your products yet, you are missing out.  SCI will leave your skin so soft and silky, it is AMAZING!  I consider this ingredient a must have for those creating their own bath and body products.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: A Closer Look at the Ingredients

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the ingredients.  In this recipe we scented it with cool cilantro to give your an uplifting and refreshing feel.  In addition, we used a couple of salts in these bubbling bath salts.  Finally, we have added sodium cocoyl isethionate to not only add bubbles to your bath tub, but also to leave your skin feeling silky and smooth.  So, read on for an in depth look at each of the ingredients that we used in this recipe.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Cool Cilantro Fragrance OilBubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil

Cool Cilantro fragrance oil by Natures Garden is a single note of freshly picked cilantro herb. This rejuvenating fragrance oil has high levels of essential oil to obtain a very true to name scent. A great refreshing fragrance oil perfect for being creative by mixing it with other scents or great to use alone too.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Sodium Cocoyl IsethionateBubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a gentle surfactant derived from coconut. It can be used in a variety of cosmetic recipes. Sodium Cocoyl Isethioniate (SCI) acts as a foaming and cleansing ingredient. SCI leaves your skin feeling soft and silky. This is an ingredient used in products like soap, bath bombs, bubble bars, and shampoo.  Recommended usage rate: 3%-20%

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Dead Sea Salt High Mineral Fine GroundBubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Dead Sea Salt High Mineral Fine Ground

The Dead Sea is known for its Dead Sea salt; which is said to help heal the body.  Dead Sea salt contains the following beneficial minerals:  Potassium, Magnesium, Bromide, and Calcium Chloride.  The magnesium found in Dead Sea salt helps to calm the nervous system, and helps combat aging, water retention, and stress. Potassium provides the body with energy.  Bromides help to reduce muscle tension.  Calcium increases circulation, and helps prevent water retention. Dead Sea salt is used to make scented bath salts, in some cosmetics, and to make soap salt bars.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Hawaiian Black Salt Coarse GroundBubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Hawaiian Black Salt Coarse Ground

Hawaiian black sea salt has a brilliant black color and silky texture.  The salt is from the Pacific sea, and is combined with activated charcoal. This compliments the natural salt flavor and adds numerous health benefits to the salt.  This salt is considered Kosher, all natural.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: 24K Gold Mica Pigment

Mica adds shimmer to your body and bath products. Mica can also be used in glycerin soap and gel wax to create a pearl appearance. A little bit goes a long way! Our mica is cosmetic grade; safe for use in lip products.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Kelly Green FUN Soap ColorantBubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Kelly Green FUN Soap Colorant

Pigment dispersed in vegetable glycerin. Uses: Melt and pour soap, Cold process soap, cosmetics. Stable and non-bleeding . Contains no carmine. Not for use in lip products.  Ingredients: Glycerine, Chromium Oxide Green (77288)

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Total Recipe Weights

410 grams Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate- SCI
420 grams Dead Sea Salt
60 grams Hawaiian Black Salt Coarse Ground
41 grams Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil
4 grams Kelly Green FUN Soap Colorant
4 grams of 24K Gold Mica Pigment

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Weighing Out the Hawaiian Black Salt

To begin, you will need a small bowl.  Then, weigh out 60 grams of the coarse Hawaiian Black Salt.  I chose to leave this portion scent free.  Since it is black, I worried the oil might cause the activated charcoal that is naturally present in the salt to bleed into other layers.  So, simply weigh out the salt and set the bowl aside.  We will need it when we begin layering our bubbling bath salts recipe.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Weighing Out the Dead Sea Salt

First, you will need a deep mixing bowl.  You will need to weigh out 420 grams of the Dead Sea salt.  If you notice any clumps in the salt, use your hands to break them up.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Adding the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate

Now, we will be adding the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, or SCI, to the mixture.  So, tare out your scale and add 410 grams of the SCI.  Again, if you find any clumps, be sure to break them up.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Adding the Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil

The next step is adding the fragrance oil.  You want to add your fragrance oil directly to the same mixing bowl.  So, to your mixing bowl, add 41 grams of Natures Garden’s Cool Cilantro Fragrance Oil.  Then, using your hands, mix the ingredients together.  Continue to mix until everything is evenly and fully combined.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Separating the Bath Salts

Next, we will begin separating our bath salts.  You will two additional bowls.  In the first bowl, add 208 grams of the salt mixture.   To the second bowl, you will also add 208 grams of the salt mixture.  The remaining salt mixture can stay in the same bowl.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Coloring the Bath Salts

Our layered bubbling bath salts recipe will be colored in four different ways.  First, we will use a FUN Soap Colorant from Natures Garden.  Then, we will leave one layer its natural color.  Our third layer in the foaming bath salts will be colored with a shimmering 24K gold mica pigment.  Lastly, our final layer is our Hawaiian black salt.  Hawaiian black salt is naturally colored with activated charcoal, so we will not need to color that layer either.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Coloring the Green Bath Salts

We will begin with the bowl of our largest portion of bath salts.  Your largest portion of the bath salts will be colored with the Kelly green FUN Soap Colorant from Natures Garden.  So, to the largest portion of bath salts, add 4 grams of the Kelly green FUN Soap Colorant.  Then, use your hands to mix the colorant completely with the salt mixture.  Also, make sure the mixture is free of any clumps.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Coloring the Gold Bath Salts

Next, you will begin coloring your gold bath salts.  So, in the bowl containing one of the two smaller portions of bath salts, we will add mica.  To this bowl, add 4 grams of your 24K gold mica pigment from Natures Garden.  Then, mix the mica into the bath salts using your hands.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Uncolored Bath Salts

Next, you simply need to know that the remaining smaller bowl of uncolored bath salts will be left as it is.  However, I do suggest mixing the the bath salts with your hands at this time.  As you are mixing, check for any clumps.  If you find clumps break them up before we begin layering our bath salts in our jars.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Coarse Hawaiian Black Salt

Finally, since Hawaiian black salt is already black in color, we will not need to do anything with the salt.  It is naturally perfect just the way it is!

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Prepare Your Jars

Before we begin packaging our layered bath salts, we will need to prepare our jars.  This recipe will make four 8 ounce jars of bubbling bath salts.  So, go ahead and get your 8 ounce jars out at this time.  Place all four in front of you.  You do not need your lids at this time.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: Layering the Bubbling Bath Salts

Now, we will begin layering the bubbling bath salts.  While we use four different colors, most colors will be used multiple times.  We used two layers of green, two layers of white, and two layers of gold.  The black will be layer a single layer right in the center of the jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The First Green Layer

We will begin with our first green layer.  Start by putting a layer of green bath salts on the bottom of each of your jars.  When looking at your jar, this layer should be about 1/4″ wide.  Once each of your four jars has a green layer, you are ready to move to the next layer.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The First White Layer

Our next layer will be the uncolored bath salts.  This layer should be about half as thick as your green layer.  Go ahead and place a white layer directly on top of your green layer.  Place a white layer in each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The First Gold Layer

Now, you will add your first gold layer.  The gold layer should be just as thick as the white layer.  So go ahead and add a layer of your gold bath salts to each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Black Salt Layer

Finally, you will be adding the black salt layer.  The layer of black salt should be right in the center of your jar.  So, go ahead and add a thin black layer to each jar.  You will end up adding 15 grams of Hawaiian black salt to each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Second Gold Layer

Next, we will be adding our second gold layer of bath salts.  So, add a second layer of gold bath salts to each jar, directly on top of the black layer.  This layer should be the same thickness as your first gold layer.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Second White Layer

Now, we will be adding the second white layer.  So, go ahead and add a second layer of white bubbling bath salts.  Again, this layer should be the same thickness of your first white layer.  Remember, add a layer to each of the four jars before moving on.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe: The Second Green Layer

Finally, we will add our second green layer.  This is the layer that will fill the remaining portion of our jars.  Once you have filled all of your jars, go ahead and place one of your black lids on top of each jar.

Bubbling Bath Salts Recipe:  Using Your Layered Bath Salts

Lastly, let’s talk about using your bath salts.  Bath salts really are simple to use.  While many bath salts are simply composed of various salts, like Epsom Salt, Dead Sea Salt, or even Himalayan Pink Salt, this particular recipe is a little bit different.  Our bath salt recipe includes SCI.  So, in order to get the best results, you want to add a few scoops of the bath salts directly under your warm running bath water.  As you can see, not only will you get the benefits of the salts, you also will enjoy a wonderful bubble bath!

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies RecipeSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil is my personal favorite Christmas fragrance oil.  This fragrance oil from Natures Garden was the perfect fragrance for these bath bombs.  Often times, here at Natures Garden, we are inspired by pictures we see, things we see out shopping, and nature, of course.  Well this Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe was no exception.  We were actually inspired by some Christmas ornaments we saw on Pinterest.  These sparkly purple ornaments from Smile Mercantile are perfect for the season.  We absolutely adored these ornaments and were inspired to create these handcrafted bath bombs to share with all of you.  While the sparkle of these bath bombs is not as apparent in the picture to the left, rest assured they sparkle like crazy!

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Information About the Ingredients in the Bath Bomb Recipe

Now, let’s talk about some the ingredients we will be using.  While some of our ingredients are pretty self explanatory, some of you may want a little more information on others.  So, below, we will talk about some of the ingredients in our bath bomb recipe.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance OilIn this recipe we use Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil.  This Christmas scent is perfect for the holidays.  Now, let’s talk a little bit about how this fabulous Christmas fragrance oil smells.

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil is a charming fragrance oil by Natures Garden which is filled with surprises to delight all of the senses with plums, dark cherries and sweet oranges enhanced with clove, cinnamon, and peppery woodsy undertones.

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil Top Notes:

Plum, Black Cherries, Strawberries, Mandarin, Orange

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil Middle Notes:

Black Pepper, Clove, Cinnamon

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil Base Notes:

Sandalwood, Eucalyptus

Natures Garden’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil was inspired by, what else, the Nutcracker’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.  For those that are not familiar, it is performed in Act 2 of the famous 1892 ballet.  The music for the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was written by Tchaikovsky.  It was also choreographed by Lev Ivanov.  The original Sugar Plum Fairy was portrayed by Antonietta Dell’Era.  However, although the role was created for the prima ballerina of the Nutcracker, the Sugar Plum Fairy did very little dancing in the original number.  This did not go over well with critics and thus, attempts were made to extend the number, incorporating more dancing into this role.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Sodium Cocoyl IsethionateSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate

Since this is a fairly new product here at Natures Garden, we will talk a little bit about how it truly kicks your bath bombs up a notch.  First, sodium cocoyl isethionate from Natures Garden comes in granulated form.  After testing various forms, we found this one to be the easiest to work with.  It doesn’t float in the air like the powdered form.  Some places may sell it in a needle form, we prefer the granules.  When this ingredient is added to your products, one of the most obvious will be the foaming you will notice when your bath bomb is activated.  Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate will create bubbles, yes, but that is only one of the wonderful things about this ingredient.  In addition, you will love the way it makes your skin feel.  After adding this product in your bath fizzies, your skin will be left feeling silky soft, clean, and refreshed.  It is a very gentle cleaning and foaming agent that I have no doubt you will become obsessed with.  I know I have!

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Citric AcidSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Citric Acid

Citric acid it one of the ingredients found in bath bombs that helps to create the fizzing action.  You see, it is the combination of baking soda and citric acid that creates the fizzing of the bath bomb.  Citric acid is found naturally in citrus fruits, it is a natural acid.  It is also used in other cosmetic recipes to lower lower the pH level.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Baking SodaSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Baking Soda

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is a natural alkaline that is used in cosmetic formulations.  Adding baking soda to your bath will help leave your skin soft and silky feeling.  It is also wonderful on your hair when used in a rinse it will leave your hair silky and smooth.  It is wonderful in cleaning formulas to lift dirt, and remove oils.  In fact, it once saved my carpet.  I had spilled a glass of red wine all over my carpet and couch.  Immediately I poured baking soda generously all over the area, about a half an hour or so later I vacuumed the area and you couldn’t even tell where I spilled it.  The wine had completely vanished.  Baking soda, like we talked about earlier, is combined with citric acid to make bath fizzies.  Baking soda can be used in other types of recipes as well.  In fact, when used with borax, you can make soap, laundry detergent, and dishwasher detergent.  Baking soda is also used in other natural household cleaner formulas.   When used in cleaning recipes, baking soda has natural deodorizing qualities.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Ingredients

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Ingredients: Other Supplies You Will Need

Witch Hazel (in spray bottle)
6- Clear Round Acrylic Fillable Ornaments
Mixing Bowls
Mixing Spoon
Scale

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Total Recipe Amounts

166 grams Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
512 grams Citric Acid
1,120 grams Baking Soda
18 grams Macadamia Nut Oil
16 grams Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil
2 grams Diamond Dust Mica
4 grams Ultramarine Violet FUN Soap Colorant

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Prior to Starting

Before we begin there are a few things we will go over.  First, when creating bath bombs you don’t really want there to be a lot of humidity in the air.  Bath bombs fizz when you add them to your bath water due to the combination of baking soda and citric acid.  So, the same thing can happen to your bath fizzies if you have a lot of humidity.  Now it isn’t like they are going to just start fizzing like crazy while they’re sitting on your table.  However, it will activate the outer surface of your bath bombs.  Then, you will end up with little dimples on your bath bombs.

Today, we will be using fillable ornament as our bath bomb molds.  You will need a total of six, medium sized ornaments.  While you can use any size you would like really, we used a medium size and created six bath bombs with this recipe.  You will want to have these out and in your work area.

Next, we will be using witch hazel to create our bath fizzies.  This should also be prepared prior to starting this bath bombs recipe.  You can use one of our bullet bottles to hold it.  Place your witch hazel in a bullet bottle and put your fine mist sprayer on top.

Finally, clean your work area and remove anything that is not related to this project.  This will help things flow easily.  In addition, make sure you have cleaned any other bowls, molds, or spoons you will be using.  I also suggest wearing an apron and protective gear.  It isn’t like baking soda is harmful, it just likes to float in the air when you are preparing it for your bath bombs.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Preparing the Dry Ingredients

When creating a bath fizzy, we always prepare our dry ingredients separately from our wet ingredients.  This will allow us to remove any clumps in these ingredients.  So, first, we will go ahead and get this ready.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Preparing the Dry IngredientsSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Total Dry Ingredient Weights
166 grams Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
512 grams Citric Acid
1,120 grams Baking Soda
Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Weighing Out the Dry Ingredient Weights

We will start by preparing the dry ingredients for our bath fizzies.  You will need a deep mixing bowl.  Then, add 166 grams sodium cocoyl isethionate, 512 grams citric acid, and 1120 grams baking soda.  Use clean, gloved hands to mix all of the ingredients together.  Be sure to break up any clumps you find in the mixture as you are mixing.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Preparing the Wet Ingredients

Next, we will prepare our wet ingredients.  This will include our Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies Fragrance Oil, FUN Soap Colorant, and Macadamia Nut Oil.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Preparing the Wet IngredientsSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Total Wet Ingredient Weights

18 grams Macadamia Nut Oil
16 grams Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil
4 grams Ultramarine Violet FUN Soap Colorant

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Weighing Out and Adding the Wet Ingredients

Now, we will begin weighing out the wet ingredients.  You will need a small mixing bowl or glass.  To this bowl, add 18 grams of Macadamia Nut Oil and 16 grams Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Fragrance Oil.  Add these ingredients to the dry ingredients.  Finally, add 4 grams of the Ultramarine Violet FUN Soap Colorant.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Mixing Your Bath BombsSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Mixing Your Bath Bombs

Next, we will need to mix everything together.  I find it easiest to mix bath bombs with my hands.  So, put clean gloves on and begin mixing the ingredient together.  You will need to make sure that your colorant is evenly and completely mixed.

Once you have your ingredients fully combined, we will begin adding some witch hazel.  You will need the bottle of witch hazel you prepared earlier.  Witch hazel will help the bath bomb stay together so that you can pack it into your molds.  Now, begin by spritzing your bath bomb mixture.  Then, mix the ingredients together.  Continue to spray and mix until your bath bomb dough reaches a crumbly dough consistency.  Once you have achieved the correct consistency, you are ready to begin filling your molds.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Adding the Bath Bomb Mixture to the MoldsSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Adding the Bath Bomb Mixture to the Molds

Now, we will be adding the mixture to the molds.  So, make sure your molds are within arms reach.  Then, begin filling one half of one of your molds.  You want to pack the mixture in tightly.  Then, continue to pack the molds until you run out of bath fizzy mixture.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Connecting the Two HalvesSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Connecting the Two Halves

Next, we will be putting the bath bombs halves together.  So, you will need two bath bomb halves.  Spray each half with witch hazel and quickly press the two halves together.  Then, do the same with two more halves.  Continue this process until you have all the bath fizzies together.  Allow your bath bombs to setup.

Sugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Finishing TouchesSugar Plum Bath Fizzies Recipe: Finishing Touches

Now, we will be adding some sparkling finishing touches.  We will achieve a sparkly sugar look by dusting our bath bombs with diamond dust.  So, you will need to remove the bath bombs from the molds.  Then, place one of your bath bombs in a clean, dry bowl.  Next, sprinkle it all over with diamond dust mica pigment.  Finally, shake the bath fizzy to remove any extra mica. You want to completely cover your bath bombs with mica so that they are super sparkly.  In addition, these bath bombs will leave a super awesome sparkle to your skin when used in your bathtub.
