Scented Pillar Candles with Texture

Fragrance OilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name: My name is Jennifer McGrath and my company is Burning Tears by Madame Jen.

Just about five years ago I started making candles. I originally started making candles for my own home using combinations of color and fragrances for luck, prosperity and spiritual guidance. As time went by I felt the need to share, so I handed some candles to my family, a few friends & my co-workers, even my loving husband started taking them to work at the tattoo shop. It took about two years later for me to build the confidence and start selling my candles.

The name Burning Tears by Madame Jen came from the candles flame. If you look at a candles flame, it’s in the form of a tear drop. My girlfriends call me “The Madame”, being dark by nature; the two magically came together “Burning Tears by Madame Jen”. I originally started off making candles using paraffin wax, and then I had customers asking if I offered soy. So I dropped the paraffin wax and strictly stuck with soy for a while. Early last year I felt like I needed something new to do. There’s only so much you can do with soy. I had actually considered making soap, but wasn’t sure that I wanted to learn something completely new. There was so much hard work that came with perfecting the perfect candle. I’m a full time paralegal with two children, so I stuck with what I knew. I picked up some slabs of paraffin wax and started to play again. This filled me with joy. I love creating pillar candles with different textures and color combinations. You just never know what is going to come out of the mold in the morning, each candle is so unique. So now I offer both soy and paraffin in my line, just about every shape or form i.e. pillars, tin containers, glass jars, warmers, votives and tea lights.

Now, just about every month I’m doing a new craft market/festival. I even have a baby shower and three weddings under my belt. My candles are also sold at a handful of boutiques here in Atlanta. I have always been a crafty person and love creating, but candle making is the one thing that really stuck to me. I not only love making candles for myself , but it makes me very happy and love to hear when my customers tell me how much they are enjoying them too.

I tried to combine a photograph of a handful of my candle creations using Natures Garden’s fragrance oils. Top left is Sweet Grass, 4×6 pillar I made using paraffin wax, very natural crisp and clean scent; Top right is Lily of the Valley using soy in a recycled salsa jar. I’ve never smelled Lily of the Valley before, I’m more of a earthy fragrance kinda gal and this is just a beautiful floral scent!; Bottom left is Lemon Grass using soy in a clamshell which is so clean and refreshing; Bottom right is Dragons Blood which is my ABSOLUTE favorite of my NG oils. Right along with my other top fave is Frankincense & Myrrh (not depicted  here, but totally worth the shout out).Fragrance Oils

Soy Jar Candles with Fragrance Oils

Saturday, April 6th, 2013

Fragrance-oils-41.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  Laura & Robert Coronado,  Laura’s Designs

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I have a Belgian Tervuren, and while there were some cross stitch patterns available, they weren’t capturing the detail of the breed that I was looking for.  I had dabbled in counted cross stitch designs before, so I designed several patterns of the breed.  I received a positive response to the designs.   I have a BS in Biochemistry and mainly worked in laboratory settings, I needed a creative outlet for my artistic side, so I decided to design more patterns.  I was fortunate, when I lived in Rock Hill, SC, to have a cross stitch store across the street. They held a competition and I entered a design in the Original Design category of a racehorse and jockey.  While it didn’t win, it was received very favorably by the owners of the shop.  After returning to Spartanburg, SC, I continued designing patterns and, wanting to work with more color, I started doing birds.  I showed some of the designs to the shop in Rock Hill, and they asked if I could do a design of a Congo African Grey as they had a customer looking for one. I continued to work on designs for fun and occasional sales. In the back of my mind, I wanted to start a business but working full time, it stayed there.  Then in June 1996 I found myself unemployed and decided it was time to get serious about starting a business.  Originally, the business was all mail order, selling my patterns by placing ads in dog and bird magazines.  Eventually, as the internet grew, I opened an eBay store and over time the business became exclusively online, with a few customers that still mail order, and I added my own website in addition to eBay.  Over the years I continued to grow the business, while working full time.   I married Robert in April of 2010 and about a year and half later, after I had a temp job end, he wanted to contribute to the business.  He always had an interest in candles and decided to learn candle making.  We decided on Soy Wax for environmental and health reasons.  With my core business based mainly on dogs and dog show people, we added a line of hand-painted dog silhouette candles to help us pull that group into our new line, along with attracting general candle lovers with the unpainted jar candles and tarts.  We also offer other hand-painted designs.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  Counted Cross Stitch patterns of dogs (most AKC breeds), horses, birds, cats, tropical fish (freshwater and marine), and custom patterns from customer’s photos of their pets.  Coronado Candles line of  hand-poured, made to order, Soy Wax Jar Candles in a variety of sizes, both plain and hand-painted.  Soy Wax Tarts in a variety of sizes and designs. Digital prints of some of my original artwork, mainly pencil drawings.  Fuzzy Squeakers, which are hand-crocheted  for dog show handlers to bait dogs in the show ring.  We are really excited about a new squeaker product coming out that will be crocheted using Chiengora (dog hair yarn).

4.  What are your business goals?  Our goal is to continue growing our business and reaching a larger market with all of our products.  Since my husband had a stroke last March, neither one of us has been able to work outside the home so growing the business has been a priority.  The candle making has been great therapy for him and he spends a lot of time researching and coming up with new designs and ideas for our Coronado Candles line.  We are hoping, during this next year, to add reed diffusers (using NG aroma buds) and hand-made soaps.  In addition,  I will be working on adding the remaining AKC breeds to our counted cross stitch line and adding more prints and photos, and begin doing custom pencil drawings.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  We use the Spectrum Liquid Candle Dye, Fragrance Oils, and Wicks.  We have found that all of the NG products are absolutely amazing…   Your dyes work so much better than some others we have tried.  Among our favorite scents from NG are Key Lime Pie, Dark Gourmet Chocolate, Chocolate Covered Cherries, and Jelly Bean!

Sisters of Soy Wax Candles

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

candle making supplies1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  We are sisters Peggy Petryshyn and Marlo Costescu.  Our company is Bluebell Soy Candles Inc.

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  When Marlo’s husband died suddenly, she needed a hobby to focus on to help her in her grieving process.  That is how Bluebell Soy Candles came about.  We have been in business since July of 2012.  We’re into all natural, healthy things so the idea of all natural candles was very appealing to us.  After doing research on the various types of waxes, we  decided we should make our own natural soy candles and tarts.  We light a soy candle every day to send a message to Danny that we love him and really miss him and think of him every day.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  We make tea lights, chunk votives and wax tarts from 100% natural soy wax.  We also do custom orders so if you want jar candles, we can do those as well.  Our latest idea is making wedding favors with a tea light or tart wrapped in beautiful netting.  A custom made thank you note from the bride and groom can also be attached to each candle.

4.  What are your business goals?  Our goals are to increase our online presence and get more sales from our Etsy store and our Facebook store.  We really love making candles so it’s imperative that we increase our sales so we can continue doing what we love.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  We absolutely love the fragrance oils from Nature’s Garden.  Some of our favorites are Lavender, Black Raspberry Vanilla, Egyptian Musk, Ginger Peach and the Cherry is fabulous!   Fragrances from other companies do not compare!  We also buy wicks, tea light cups, molds – whatever we need to create our wonderful candles.

Mom Owned Candle Company

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

carrie1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name
My name is Carrie Powell and my company’s name is Carrie’s Curiosities, LLC

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?
I’ve loved candles for as long as I can remember and I grew up with a very crafty mother, that encouraged me to try different outlets for my creativity.  I actually went to bed one night thinking, “I wonder how hard it would be to make my own candles”.  When I woke up the next morning, I began scouring the internet for any information on candlemaking I could find. (Luckily, I was able to find quite a lot!)  After I read up on the process, I talked to my husband about learning to make my own candles. (I honestly thought he would tell me I’m crazy.) However, he encouraged me to get a starter kit and try it out, so I did and I loved it!  From there, I started making candles for friends, family and neighbors and people really loved my candles, so I decided to start making them on a larger scale.
My motivation for the business was the prospect of getting to do something I truly loved and still be at home with my son.  I really enjoy the fact that I get to be a business owner and a full time mother!
I’ve been in business for about a year and I’m still learning a lot.  Everyday is a new adventure and I’m loving the ride!

3.  What products do you make and sell?
Right now, I sell soy container candles (mason jars, Victorian style jars, tureens and tins), palm wax container candles, votive candles, tarts/melts and grubby pillar candles.  (I also sell a few beaded ornaments on my website as well, but they aren’t scented!)

4.  What are your business goals?
My current goals are to continue making high quality products and to build my online presence.  I’ve also begun participating in local craft fairs and would like to continue building my presence within my community.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?
Oh goodness, I use Nature’s Garden’s fragance oils all the time!  I’ve also purchased tins and clamshell containers and everything I’ve received has been excellent.  I honestly love NG’s fragrance oils.  There is such a large variety, that I just have fun looking through them all and making wishlists.  One of my favorite scents, is one that I just used in my new vanilla line of candles, Coconut Vanilla scent.  It is a terrific scent and I honestly don’t want to sell the candles I’ve made.  I want to keep them all, because I love the scent so much!
