make your own blueberry bath bombAre you looking for a Natural Bath Bomb?

Using a bath bomb in your tub is refreshing and rejuvenating for your skin.  And now, you can make your very own homemade bath bombs using natural fruit powder.  Plus, they are quick and easy to make!

With the exception of baking soda and witch hazel, all the ingredients you need to make these blueberry natural bath bombs can be found at Natures Garden.  To view the complete recipe for these bath bombs, please click on this link.

The two crucial components for this recipe are citric acid and baking soda.  These two ingredients when mixed with water have a chemical reaction that results in the fizzing of the water. This fizzy nature is characteristic of bath bombs.  But, did you know citric acid also acts as a water softener?

Besides the feel good aspect that bath bombs provide, these blueberry bath fizzes are also skin loving.  Using the superfood Blueberry, you can incorporate tons of antioxidants, amino acids, and the beneficial nutrients of vitamins and minerals all with the simple use of blueberry fruit powder.  This herb will help to rejuvenate the skin and keep it young and healthy.  The sweet almond oil is a non-greasy oil that moisturizes and is easily absorbed into the skin.  To really hammer home the scent of blueberry, Blueberry Fragrance Oil is used to scent the fizzes.  To really capture the blue color of the blueberry fruit powder, you can add additional colorant with the FUN Soap Colorant- Ultramarine Blue.

To make your very own blueberry bath bombs, here are the steps:

Step 1:  Pour some witch hazel into a spray bottle.  Set aside.

Step 2:  Place 2 mixing bowls in your work area.  To each bowl, place 256 grams of citric acid.  Then, add 560 grams of baking soda to each bowl.  If you notice any clumps, break them up in your hands now.  Mix well.  Finally, to one of the bowls, add 5 grams of blueberry fruit powder and stir, leave the second bowl alone.

Step 3:  Now, get two more bowls.  Place 9 grams of sweet almond oil in each. To each bowl, now add 20 drops of fragrance and stir.

Step 4:  Finally, to one of the bowls add 10 grams of Ultramarine Blue Fun Soap Colorant and stir.

Step 5:  Slowly add the wet ingredients bowl containing the blue soap colorant to the dry ingredients bowl containing the blueberry fruit powder.  Using your hands, mix the ingredients together until they are completely incorporated.

Step 6:  Lightly spritz the mixture with witch hazel and mix.  Continue spritzing until the mixture feels like crumbly dough in your hands. Be very careful not to spray too much witch hazel into your mixture or it will activate the citric acid.

Step 7:
Press the bluish mixture into half of your fillable ornament and press down firmly.  Set aside.

Step 8:  Now, get the remaining two bowls.  Slowly add the wet ingredients bowl to the remaining dry ingredients bowl.  Mix these ingredients together so that they are completely incorporated.

Step 9:  Again, slowly spray the mixture with witch hazel.  Mix, and continue in this manner until the mixture feels like crumbly dough.  Do not over spray.

Step 10: Press this into the other half of your fillable ornament and press down firmly.

Step 11:  Now, spritz both halves of the ornaments with witch hazel.  Then, attach the ornament halves together.

beeswaxBeeswax Uses

Beeswax is a natural wax made from honeybees.  The honeybees use beeswax in their hives to house their young and store honey and pollen.  When the honeycombs are removed from the hive, the beeswax is placed in hot water and skimmed out.  Many times the beeswax must be rendered to remove impurities before use.

There are three different types of beeswax.  Yellow beeswax is raw beeswax.  White beeswax is yellow beeswax that has been bleached.  Beeswax absolute is yellow beeswax that has been treated with alcohol.

Beeswax is a fabulous wax to use for candle making.  Candles made from this wax work as air purifiers.  The long lasting and clean burn of a beeswax candle produces little to no smoke when lit.

Beeswax is also an excellent ingredient to add to any of your bath and body formulations.  Providing wonderful benefits like skin softening and moisturizing, this wax can seal the deal when it comes to ending cracked and dry skin.

Because beeswax contains Vitamin A, beeswax can work with your damaged skin to promote cell repair.  Its humectant like property provides a barrier for your skin; not only locking the moisture in but concurrently allowing your skin to breathe.  As an emollient, beeswax helps to soothe irritated skin and advocates a soft and supple feel.  Beeswax can also be used in formulations to help thicken consistencies for products like body creams and lotions.

For dry and cracked lips when the cold weather hits, beeswax it a go to ingredient for lip balms and other lip care products.  Not only will beeswax help to heal your lips, it also aids in the prevention of dry and cracked lips.  The natural thin layer that beeswax creates keeps your lip protected from the elements, and keeps them moisturized too.

Within the realm of hair care products, beeswax can be used to create wonderful pomades and waxes.  The end result of its use will leave hair shiny and sleek.

For soap making purposes, beeswax adds elements of anti irritant, anti bacterial, and anti viral benefits.  It is an incredible ingredient to add extra moisturizing elements to your bars, which will leave your skin with a silky soft feel.  Plus, the effects are long lasting.

Menthol Crystals

This entry was posted in all natural, All natural shampoo, bath and body, bath products, cold process soap, cosmetic supplies, handmade soap, homemade, homemade lotion, homemade soap, lip balm, lotion, menthol crystals, Natures Garden and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on by .

menthol crystalsThe menthol crystals that Natures Garden carries are actually crystallized peppermint essential oil.  These crystals are 100% natural and have a variety of uses when introduced into your products.

Although menthol crystals can be made synthetically, when derived naturally they come from mint oils such as cornmint or peppermint.  Once the extraction occurs, the oil is immediately frozen (cold extraction) which forms the menthol crystals.  These crystals, which look similar to smaller oblong rock crystals, are solid at room temperature but have a melting point of around 107 degrees Fahrenheit.  These menthol crystals which are a white or clear crystalline substance are soluble in alcohol and propylene glycol and they are miscible in oils.

Menthol crystals have many uses.  They can be found in many industries such as oral hygiene, candies, pharmaceuticals, personal care, perfumery, and tobacco.  They naturally have a strong minty odor to them.  And, their usage percentage in a product can vary anywhere from .2% to 10% depending on the end product that is being formulated.

Menthol contains local anesthetic, antipruritic, analgesic, antispasmodic and anti irritant qualities.  The use of menthol in bath and body products can actually engage the cold sensitive receptors in our skin and provide a cooling sensation.  This same sensation can also occur from inhaling menthol as well as ingesting it.

menthol crystals in oral hygiene
Oral Hygiene:

In the realm of oral hygiene this ingredient is used not only for its refreshing flavor, but also to combat bad breath and can be used in mouthwash and toothpaste.

menthol crystals in gumFlavoring and Candies:
Menthol crystals are used to flavor many of our favorite go to minty pleasures.  It is used with the addition of anise to produce the tried and true flavor of licorice.  The crystals are used in peppermint and spearmint chewing gum for their refreshing and cooling feeling when chewed.  And, it is also even used in the production of many hard candies.

menthol crystal usesPharmaceuticals:
For slight throat irritations, menthol crystals can be used in items like cough medicines, cough drops, and throat lozenges.  The addition of this ingredient will cause a soothing and cooling sensation in the inflamed area.

Menthol crystals can be used to alleviate nausea, especially when the nausea is due to motion sickness.  This is because peppermint (which is used in making menthol crystals) is a natural carminative herb, meaning it can settle the digestive system.

Because menthol crystals have antipruritic and anti irritant qualities, they are great for anti itch creams and balms.

When it comes to chest congestion and upper respiratory issues; menthol can work as a decongestant.  The uses in this category for menthol crystals include: rubs, balms, or salves.  Inhaling the minty aroma of these crystals will also help to alleviate the blockages.

For an excellent fever reducer, menthol crystals can be made into wraps to be applied to the head or feet.  These wraps can also be made into balms or cooling gels.

menthol crystals in bath productsBath and Body: (Once made into a liquid form)

Menthol crystals are a great addition to lip balms.

Menthol crystals are a remarkable additive to lotions and creams for their analgesic property.  This provides temporary relief of minor aches and pains, as well as sprains in muscles.  Because menthol is antispasmodic, they can also help to reduce muscle cramping and muscle spasms.

Due of their amazing cooling, analgesic, and anesthetic properties, menthol crystals are extremely helpful in the treating of sunburns and razor burns.  The cooling sensation in gels and shaving balms simulates the feeling of ice providing some instant relief from the pain.  But, menthol can also penetrate deeply to numb the pain area temporarily.

Menthol crystals can even be used in deodorants, hair shampoos, and hair conditioners for their refreshing and cooling sensations.

Adding menthol crystals to soap recipes can enhance your soap for any of menthol’s benefits.  Just make sure the crystals are completely dissolved in the soaping oils and stirred well to reduce skin irritations.

menthol crystals in perfumes

Perfumery:
Menthol is even used in the perfumery industry.  When dealing with notes of floral, especially that of rose, perfumists will use menthol to produce menthyl esters.  These esters actually accentuate these delicate notes.

Tobacco:

Menthol crystals are used to flavor various tobacco items such as cigarette tobacco, pipe tobacco, and chewing tobacco.

The shelf life for these crystals is 2 years when stored accordingly.  However, areas with high humidity may experience the hardening and mass joining of these crystals into a solid lump.  This lump may be broken up by lightly hitting it with a mallet.  Also, areas with high levels of heat may melt the crystals.  Menthol crystals are best stored in a tight fitted glass, aluminum, or double lined container.  The crystals should be kept in a cool and dry area away from heat and direct sunlight.

Care should be taken when using menthol crystals in skincare products, as using too much may irritate the skin.

Natures Garden sells our menthol crystals for external applications only.  In the preceding post, we discussed how these wonderful crystals have many different uses in vast industries.  Nothing in this article is to be construed as medical advice.  Please consult your doctor before using any of this information for treatment purposes. We provide this data for educational purposes only.

Spring/ Summer 2014

Uncertainty & Hope
Since September 11, 2001, the American mindset shifted from one of confidence and security to one of fear and uncertainty. For more than a decade, you could not even turn on the TV without being inundated with some sort of message of fear; Fear of terrorism, fear of global warming, fear of our country’s economic status, fear of our civil rights being taken away, fear of unemployment, fear of the foods we eat…fear of just about everything. But, how long can people continue to live fear-infested lives?

There comes a point where people who have lived in fear begin to question why their outlook is so grim. There have been plenty of moments in our country’s history where things looked grim, but we have always survived and moved forward.

Recovery begins with a positive attitude, and it is this attitude that will truly give us hope.  Incidentally, studies have shown that there is only one thing more powerful than fear; and that is hope. One of the easiest ways to focus on “brighter times” is to look back in time. The 20’s, 50’s, and the 80’s were all known as “happy times”. As Americans try to find their “ray of hope”, trends will be affected by their need to be “free from fear”. There are typically two ways that the mind deals with fear: “fight or flight”.

We think the trends of 2014 will incorporate these conflicting mindsets. Rebellious elements versus “happy-go-lucky” elements will influence color, fashion, home décor, and fragrance trends. Both of these conflicting trends have one thing in common: They are looking to the past to find the answers to our future.

pantone color trends
Pantone Colors
Spring/Summer 2014

Pantone colors for spring/summer 2014 include cool pastels and vibrant bold colors which put a modern twist on traditional colors of the past.

The color experts at Pantone say that the following things inspired them to create the colors for 2014: bright florals, international travel, and confident women.

Fear It and Do It Anyways
There are things in life that people do which could seriously end in death, but they do them anyways. Skydiving, mountain climbing, walking a tight rope, surfing, and race car driving are all examples of “taking a risk” in exchange for having fun.

One could say that there is a thrill that accompanies doing anything radical; even if the possibility of death is the result.

For example, in the TV show, “Breaking Bad”, Walter White was a law-abiding, chemistry teacher who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Prior to this diagnosis, Walter had lived a life of doing and saying the right things to please other people.

Long-story-short, Walter does a 180 and uses his chemistry knowledge to begin cooking and selling crystal meth.

Although viewers of this show were aware of the criminality of his actions, they found themselves rooting for the “bad guy” because he stopped living a life of fear, and took complete control of his own life.

trend scentsHow Does This Mindset Affect the Trends for 2014?
Bold, brightly-colored florals will be found in fashion, home décor, and in fragrances; especially the “exotic or poisonous florals”. Although these flowers are beautiful and enticing, if the live flowers were to be eaten, they would be poisonous and may even cause death.

In fragrance, these “deadly floral” notes will be infused with fruity characters and peppery notes to create the feeling: “Fear it and do it anyways”.

Deadly floral notes include: Poppy, Crocus, Dahlia, Calla Lily, Queen of the Night Tulip, Lily of the Valley, Bella Donna, and Oleander. Natures Garden’s new Che Bella Donna is a sassy, fruity floral fragrance, with up-scale fragrance notes; demanding the attention it deserves.

Men’s fragrances will follow the same course, but include more woodsy notes in their base. A new male scent by Natures Garden called Deadly Weapon clearly demonstrates this trend; enticing, sexy, yet rebellious.

*By the way, no deadly flowers are actually used to make fragrances. The fragrance notes are the perfumist’s rendition of what these flowers smell like in nature.*

In addition to bold floral prints, designers have incorporated bold “text” statements on their clothing. If you have something to say, why not put those words on your clothes, and say it loud and clear for everyone to hear! You will see “text” messages on shirts, pants, dresses, handbags, and even shoes. How is that for getting your message across?

For this trend’s flash back in time element, we focus on the 20’s flapper. With disdain for conventional thinking, insubordination with authority, and pleasure-seeking lifestyles, flappers wore clothing that got them noticed. The fashion world has picked up on these attitudes in clothing, and you will see fringe and more fringe. Whether you are wearing casual wear or evening wear, fringe will be added. You’ll even see denim with raw-edge fringe. Thank you flappers for the inspiration!

relax scentsRelax
Just as important as it is to grab life by the horns with “fear-it-and-do-it-anyways”; it is also crucial to relax and find serenity for your own peace of mind.

As a society, our panties have “been in a bunch” for far too long. Worry and anxiety tend to bog down our minds; preventing us the ability to think clearly and truly relax. This undo stress has a direct effect on the bodies, physically impacting our immune systems, as well as our outlook on life.

Relaxation is the key to rejuvenating the mind, body, and soul. The truth of the matter is everything that lives, must also expire. With that notion, life should be lived to the fullest each and every day. Fear and doubt should never be the pillars to which you gauge your life or your happiness.

The world of fashion and fragrance have picked up on this trend. Oversized coats and flowing, wide-legged pants are set to be popular in 2014.

In addition, for every bold color that Pantone has projected to be trendy in 2014 (Dazzling Blue, Cayenne, Freesia, Radiant Orchid, and Celosia Orange), they have also forecasted numerous pastel colors (Placid blue, Paloma, Violet Tulip, Hemlock, and Sand). This trend promotes relaxation and a sense of freedom.

Fragrance notes that induce relaxation and mental clarity will be trendy in 2014. You will see lavender taking center stage for the “relax” trend; followed by notes of chamomile, jasmine, bergamot, and rose. Research has shown that the smell of roses may help reduce anxiety. Maybe that is why they say, “Stop and smell the roses.”

lavender martini scent
Lavender Martini

Gin Martini meets floral lavender. We’ve successfully captured the effervescent carbonation in this unique fragrance.  Natures Garden’s lavender martini fragrance begins with top notes of tangy lemon zests, orange, and carbonation; followed by middle notes of spicy bergamot, mint, and lavender; sitting on a base note of rosewood.

cannabis rose scent
Cannabis Rose

This fragrance oil by Natures Garden is quite possibly the most unique blend of uncommon fragrance notes ever found in a fragrance blend.  Unique, and absolutely fascinating!  The blend of Bulgarian rose, pomegranate flower, bergamot, cannabis accord, sheer jasmine, dark chocolate, white musk, patchouli, and oolong tea.

happy scentsPut on a Happy Face

As society beckons for happier times, it is almost as if they realize that they must look to themselves to make things better. The baby boomers enjoyed the happy times of the 50’s. They went on to raise generation X, who got to enjoy the fun times of the 80’s. Both of these generations had something major in common: self responsibility.

The baby boomers told their kids that they could become amazing if they worked hard and dreamed big. There was no such word as “can’t”. Generation X went on to become our nation’s first “Yuppies”. “Proud to be American” was something that was heartfelt and embraced. Songs like: “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobbie McFerrin, and “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi echoed the mood of the 80’s which was “Be Happy and Live It Up”.

Trends for 2014 are showing elements of the 50’s and 80’s infused in fashion, home décor, color, and fragrance. Flowing skirts reminiscent of the 50’s, ornate embellishments, and vintage, vintage, vintage.

In fact, Shutterstock, a stock photo company, claims that vintage pictures are now a huge trend in downloaded pictures.

The 80’s have influenced fashion for 2014 as well with bright colors, bold stripes, crop tops, and sheer panels. Bomber jackets will be a staple wardrobe piece in 2014. Designers are also showing off one shoulder in their designs.

Fragrance trends are also being influenced by the mood of the nation. With the ambition of designing scents that “make you smile”, perfumists are using top notes that are juicy and bubbly. Launching fun, soda pop fragrances fits the bill. Using juicy top notes with hearty florals, perfumists will create unique scents to spotlight their creativity.

In addition, perfumists are using “feel good” notes that offer the feeling that success is attainable.

Fragrance ideas that meet that challenge are: the scent of money, cognac and Cubans, ocean water regatta, and diamond diva. To represent the bold colors of 2014, perfumistsare using brightly colored berry notes, of which, strawberry is taking the lead.

At the present time, generation X is raising their children. How will it turn out? They feel like the future of this nation is up to them. With that being said, 2014 will surely have a level of uncertainty, but at the same time, we begin to see a “glimmer of hope” as we look to the past to provide a brighter future.

heart melt and pour soapThis Valentines Day lets celebrate the ones we love by making them homemade heart soap.

This heart soap project uses almost 4 pounds of melt and pour soap.  Although for this recipe, we suggest using Shea butter soap, any white soap base will work.  To view the multiple melt and pour soap bases Natures Garden carries, please click on this link.  Please Note:  You will also need a very small amount of diamond clear soap base.  This will be used to help keep the heart soap in place once it is folded.

The fragrance that we selected for the heart soap was Lick Me All Over.  Really any one of your favorite body safe fragrance oils from Natures Garden will work to scent this homemade project; just keep the vanillin content in mind.  If you choose to use a scent that does contain vanillin, you may want to consider using Vanilla White Color Stabilizer to reduce discoloration in your finished heart soap.  For the heart soap you will need to have at least 4 ounces of fragrance.  To see a list of other Valentines Day themed scents, please click on this link.

When it comes to color for the heart soap, we selected Tomato Red Fun Soap Colorant.  In order to achieve a nice, bold red you will need to use about one ounce of colorant.

Other ingredients that you will need for the heart soap project are:  Vegetable Glycerin and Whipped Soap Base.

The following molds were also used:  Love Heart Embed Mold and Square Loaf- Mold Market Molds

Before starting this project you will also need the following items:  Scale, Cutting Board, Knife, 9 x 13 Cake Pan, Wax Paper, Ruler, Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, Microwave Safe Glass Containers, Spatula, Mixing Spoons, Mixing Bowl, a hand held mixer, and 2 disposable cups.

Now that you have everything that you need, let’s get project heart soap underway!

Step 1:  Measure out 8.5 inches in length on your cake pan.  You will want to mark this point by placing your loaf mold there.  Next, tear off a piece of wax paper long enough to cover this area.  Lay the wax paper down and tuck it loosely into the corners.

Step 2:  In your microwaveable container, weigh out  500 grams of Shea Butter Soap.  Place this in the microwave and start melting it in 30 seconds increments. Stir gently in between.  Stop melting once the soap is in a liquid state.

Step 3:  Next, add 20 grams FUN Tomato Red Soap colorant, 14 grams vegetable glycerin, and 26 grams fragrance oil to the melted soap.  Stir well.  Now, pour all of the soap into the wax paper. Spritz with alcohol and allow this to fully set up.

Step 4:  Once the red soap has set up, weigh out 20 grams of Diamond Clear soap.  Melt this for 30 seconds in the microwave or until it is in a liquid state.  Then, set it aside.

Step 5:
In a large microwaveable bowl, weigh out and melt  1200 grams of Shea Butter Soap. Stir gently in between each round of melting. Keep melting until all soap is in a liquid state.  This will take some time.

Step 6:  Now, get the red soap and carefully remove the wax paper.  With one of the shorter edges facing you, lay the soap onto a cutting board.

Step 7:  Next, grab the loaf mold and mark it’s length using a knife.  Cut off excess soap and place it in a separate bowl.

Step 8:  Now, fold your red soap in half (long ways).  Using your fingers, gently curl the edges to meet.

Step 9:  Once you have a heart shape, slide one edge firmly into a disposable cup.  Repeat for the other side.  Now, pour some of the melted diamond clear soap down the center of the fold.  Don’t forget to move the soap so that the melted soap is able to reach under the cup portion too.  Then, set aside.

Step 10:  Now that all of the white soap is in a liquid state, add 60 grams of fragrance Oil.  Mix well and set aside.  Next, get the loaf mold.  Remove the cups from the heart soap and gently place the heart upside down in the loaf mold.  Spritz generously with alcohol.

Step 11:  Using a spatula, carefully pour the white soap into the loaf.  Do not pour the soap onto the red heart directly.  Make sure to pour soap along the width edges to completely fill the inside opening of the heart.   Once the mold is filled, spritz with alcohol to reduce any bubbles.

Step 12:  Allow your soap to fully set up at room temperature, or to speed things up place your soap loaf in the refrigerator.  When the soap is completely set up, take it out of the mold and make sure you turn it back to right side up.  Set aside.

Step 13:   Now, take the bowl that has the scrap red soap.  Place it in the microwave, and remelt.  Next, pour the soap into the love hearts embed mold.  Allow this to fully set up, then pop them out.

Step 14:  Soap Frosting Steps:  Once the soap loaf is completely set up (which will take some time), weigh out 114 grams of Whipped Soap Base and 14 grams of vegetable glycerin.  Place both of these ingredients into a mixing bowl.  Set aside.

Step 15:  Now, weigh out 114 grams of Shea Butter soap.  Melt all of the soap down in the microwave, then pour it into the mixing bowl with the two other ingredients.

Step 16:  Using your hand held mixer, start to whip the ingredients together.  As you mix, watch for the ingredients to look like whipped frosting.  Stop mixing.

Step 17:  Now working quickly, add 12 grams of fragrance oil and 2 drops Tomato Red Fun Soap Colorant to the mixing bowl.  Clean the sides of the bowl with a spatula. Then, start whipping the mixture. Make sure the mixture is well blended.  When the mixture begins to look like pink whipped frosting again, stop beating.

Step 18:  Using your spatula place the soap frosting evenly onto the loaf.  Now, place the love heart embeds into the soap frosting.  Allow this to set up.
