Soy Candles and Room Sprays

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

fragrance oilsWhat’s your name & Your Company Name:  My name is Noelle Walters Davis and my company is Suffield Suds, Scents & Sundries

Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I began making candles about 10 years ago.  Originally I started making candles for my own use because I was fed up with the lack of quality candles on the market.  What was available from the big box stores either turned my walls black with soot, or had no scent throw after they were lit.  I have always been deeply involved in the handcrafted movement and candle making quickly became a passion.  After reading everything that I could get my hands and  lots of trial and error, I’ve developed my own all natural wax blend and use only the finest fragrances available (especially from Natures Garden!)

What products do you make and sell?  In addition to soy candles, wax buttons, and room sprays, I also offer cold processed soap, handspun yarns, and hand woven textiles.  Everything handmade by me!

What are your business goals?  My dream business goal would be to quit my day job and focus on my business full-time.  My husband is a great support and we have a five year plan where (fingers crossed!) that will hopefully come true.  I would love to open my own little candle shop and feature works from other artisans as well.

What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  My number one favorite product from Natures Garden is the fragrance oils of course!  I have been purchasing them for years and have never been disappointed.  Cold processed soap is also a passion of mine and I love the variety of clays, additives, butters, and oils Natures Garden offers.  Soap making allows me to get really creative, and the selection they offer encourages me to be really imaginative!

Using 200 Varieties of NG Fragrances

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

fragrance oils1.     What’s your name & Your Company Name:  Taleda Giallanza – Bliss Body & Bath ~ Scentsational Sundries for Mind Body & Spirit

2.      Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I’ve been making body products for my massage business for about 10yrs, starting with body butters, adding salt scrubs, sugar scrubs, black sea mud for detox wraps and sea algae toning wraps. Making the products I used on my clients was inevitable; I didn’t like the feel of name brand creams/butters/oils or the lengthy list of ingredients including a lot of preservatives and chemicals.  Also, I found it embarrassing to ask my clients if they’d care to wipe down before they dressed and left; that was a waste of my money and their time. So I began teaching myself the fun but precise art of crafting homemade body products for use on my massage patrons. My aromatic butters, the vast variety thereof and knowing they wouldn’t have to wipe off greasy oily goo from the bodies or risk staining their clothes was the seal on the deal. Their appreciation of my efforts encouraged me; when I fell into making many of my products Organic & Vegan word spread and I found more and more appointments booked via referrals. Their obvious approval of my Path took a turn when they began asking “Can you make me a jar of this butter? How much would you charge for a big jar of this scrub? I simply love your scentsational sundries!” And so, here I am using their words as part of my business name byline.

3.      What products do you make and sell?  Well, the question really is: What DON’T I make and sell!!  I don’t do CP or any other type of soap except M&P. I want too but my love affair with M&P hasn’t run its course and quite frankly I simply don’t have any room left for supplies!  Let’s see we’ll start with the bath/shower then move to the body starting with the head: all types of M&P soap, bath bombs, bath bomb melts, shower fizzers, bubble bath, bath oil, bath milks, 2 types of hair masques, for the face: 4 face cleansers, 4 toners, 4 serums, 3 day creams, 3 night creams, 4 different bases for about 200 different (so far) body butters, butter salt scrubs, butter sugar scrubs, body mud masques, body sea algae masques, yogurt body puddings, super skin conditioners with a lanolin base, heavy duty foot balms, cracked foot creams, foot baths/soaks, body splashes or spritzers, men’s shaving soap mugs, men’s face splash, Mother Earth Face Powders (most of the powders come from Nature’s Garden), Cleo Milk Powders, lip gloss flavored, non-flavored, Aromatherapy Oils, Feng Shui Oils and another type but I’m not telling!  I’m learning how to make bronzers as Spring is here and Summer is coming!  Did I leave anything out? LOL … having a sense of humor is vital in our business otherwise what’s the point?

4.      What are your business goals?  To rely on my body product business as my only source of income which means being successful enough that I may retire from Massage Therapy.

5.      What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  Well, I counted all the Fragrance Oils and Essential Oils I have, (I try to keep a current list), and the last date was March 6th, 2013 ending total of 260. I’d safely say that 200 of them came from Nature’s Garden, about 30 of them I blended NG’s FOs to create my own blends and the rest from another supplier that I of course blended up with NGs FOs to make even more aromas. You simply can’t have too many, in my humble opinion anyway.  Nearly all the A-Z powders I have (Botanical, Clays, Foods, Fruits, Herbs, Muds) came from Nature’s Garden.  I LOVE the Yogurt Base – I call it Pudding – because to me when I whip mine up, that’s exactly what it looks like and feels like, and my clients agree.  The only thing that hasn’t worked out for me is when I fall in love with one of your FOs and then you discontinue it – I am left wondering what the heck to do!

Your Website: I don’t have a website per say at the moment I do own my domain name thru GoDaddy.  Of course I’m Trademarked. I mainly sell thru my massage spa room, thru Etsy and thru word of mouth that trickles around Facebook.  I just discovered Storenvy and I am selling there; I started a Blog thru Google and WordPress and my massage website also is home to my products. I am really all over the place, like FOs, you simply can’t be in too many places! Sadly due to time, I haven’t developed any place I am selling to its full potential; that also is a goal of mine.

fragrance oils1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name?  My name is Rosa Liz Rivera and my company name is Rosa’s Natural Soaps.

2.  Why did you decide to go into business? What was your motivation? How long have you been in business?  I decide to go in business because I’m a Register Nurse Specialist in Wound and Skin Care (CWSCN) and I saw that there many people suffering for skin problems & diseases like dermatitis, sensitive skin, psoriasis, eczema, dryness, acne, fungus disease and itchy skin. Also I observed that traditional medication are abrasive, dangerous and doesn’t really work; Commercial soaps worsen theses conditions; many “natural soaps” wasn’t real natural loaded of dangerous chemicals and the good real natural soap was too expensive. So I decide to use my medical knowledge to create my own Old Fashioned Soap recipe of all natural soap making to create the most affordable; long lasting, creamiest, with great lather properties and gentler soap you ever use without using any bad chemical for your skin. We don’t add color, Coconut oil or Palm oil to our soaps to avoid skin irritation. We always test our soap PH to ensure it’s safe for the skin. We start our business on February 2012. Also we offer Pure Natural dogs shampoo bar for dogs with skin conditions. The Shampoo bars have special blends of essential oils that repel fleas and ticks naturally. In 2013 we started to sell our soap Loafs for wholesale purposes and fundraising events.

Organic Products with Essential Oils

Friday, April 19th, 2013

fragrance oils1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  Caryn Stockwell, Second Star Designs

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I have been a professional seamstress and clothing designer for over 20 years, starting and closing a number of companies over the years.  In 2008, at the behest of a local store, I launched Second Star Designs with my line of children’s clothing – providing quality products that my customers could afford; clothing that could be handed down generation after generation instead of ending up in landfills.  In 2011, my skin developed a sensitivity to certain chemicals and fibers.  This led to the creation of clothing produced using only natural fibers and eventually, only organic materials.  This sensitivity increased to a point wherein I even became sensitive to the chemicals found in commercially produced body products.

In 2012, out of concern for the environment and the toxins used in the majority of the products found on the store shelves, I created an organic healing salve for use in our home.  I shared this new product with friends and family.  Those using this salve responded with excitement over its healing properties, asking where they could purchase it in bulk.  Within a few short months, four stores in the Portland/Vancouver Metro area were carrying my healing salve and requesting additional products along similar lines.  These requests led to my Barista Blend lip balms, Aromatic Tub Teas, and organic MP soap bars, which were released in December 2012.

With the onset of 2013, I was accepted as an Official Designer for Fashion Week San Diego.  The organizers were interested in both my organic, bio-friendly adult clothing line and my small line of organic body products; asking me to bring both product lines to San Diego this coming Fall.  In the meantime, I was receiving requests from stores to add additional products to the body products line.  Always willing to try something new, I created my first loaf of cold process soap toward the end of January.  Much in the same way that one tattoo leads to another, one loaf of soap has led to another and another and another … with people wanting to purchase bars of soap simply from seeing photos posted on my Facebook Fan Page.

In the last three months, I have discovered a new passion in the creation of organic body products; products that we personally love to use.  In addition to the soaps, healing salve, and tub teas, I have added a number of organic products that consist of 98% to 100% organic ingredients, packaged in recyclable/biodegradable packaging.

3.  What products do you make and sell?   I have a line of clothing for infants and children.  I am designing and manufacturing a line of bio-friendly adult clothing.  Under the raison éthique™ by Second Star Designs label, I have added a line of organic body products to my repertoire:  CP soap, lip balms, tub teas, scented bath salts, chocolate solar salts, healing salve, capsaicin cream, whipped body soufflés, massage oil lotion bars, foaming liquid hand soap, bath truffles, and glycerin soap.  In the next two months, along with creating our own glycerin soap base, we anticipate offering massage oil candles which will be hand-crafted using a proprietary blend of GMO-free, non-soy, vegetable wax.

4.  What are your business goals?   We are hoping to grow both business divisions into self-supporting entities providing wonderful products that our customers’ skin will love to live in.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?   I use a number of essential oils from Natures Garden; my favorites being their Natural Vanilla Infusion.  I have also recently discovered that NG carries a number of oils, butters and clays that are difficult to find anywhere else … which I plan on adding to my shopping list.

Handcrafted Vegan Products

Friday, April 19th, 2013

fragrance oils1.  What’s your name & Your Company Name:  My name is Amanda Stott and my company is Tiki Bar Soap

2.  Why did you decide to go into business?  What was your motivation?  How long have you been in business?  I started making handmade soap as a hobby in 2011 during graduate school, as a way to relieve stress.  I also had a hard time finding truly vegan products.  Everything always seemed to contain beeswax, or goat milk, or honey.  I wanted something to use that was vegan and good for my skin but that was fun to use and smelled good too.  After making a few batches, I handed out soap to everyone I worked with, friends, family, even the janitorial staff in my building.  Every evening when I would get home from school I was itching to make soap.  I was hooked!  Before long people began encouraging me to sell my soap, and were requesting gift baskets for their friends and family for the holidays.  I entered my first craft fair that year at Christmas and was surprised by how much I liked the sales aspect of the handcrafted industry.  I finished my PhD in computational chemistry in May 2012 and after working briefly as a postdoctoral research assistant decided to pursue my business full time.  If you would have asked me five years ago where I would be today my response would not be “selling handmade soap” but I love what I do and would not have it any other way!  My motivation for transitioning from hobby to “this is my full time job” is that I enjoy creating, I enjoy meeting people, and I enjoy the freedom to decide what I will do every morning when I wake up.  I am still just as busy, if not busier than I was when I was a student, but it feels good to be the one making the decisions.

3.  What products do you make and sell?  All of my products are vegan, and I recently reformulated all of my soaps to be palm oil free.  I make soaps, lotions, lotion bars, cremes, body butter, nail polish, solid perfume, bath salts, mineral makeup, body butter candles, mud mask, bubble bath bars, shampoo and conditioner bars, as well as baby and pet care products.

4.  What are your business goals?  My business goals are to get my products in front of as many people as possible!  I would love to one day have large wholesale orders and a production facility.  In the meantime my garage as a production area will have to suffice.  In addition, I am currently working on integrated productivity software solutions for web and mobile applications for the soapmaking industry.

5.  What are some products you use from Natures Garden; what are your favorite products from Natures Garden?  My favorite products are the fragrance oils, essential oils, flavor oils, botanicals, soy body butter base, and pet shampoo base.  My favorite fragrance oils include gin martini, orange blossom, passion flower acai berry, lavender martini, goldie dreadlocks, and dragon’s blood.  May favorite flavor oils are buttercream frosting and kiss of death.  My favorite botanticals are carrot powder and frankincense tears.  I use the body butter base to create a range of products including body lotion and body cream.  I also use Natures Garden silky e-wax, optiphen plus, and btms for making handmade lotions and conditioner.
